- Not every characters are created equally for modern control, so these characters are who I would recommend new fighting game/SF6 players to start with if you just want to pick up and play without spending too much time practicing before you can enjoy the game. This was made for Season 1.
Detail guides on how to play 2 of those characters are coming soon!

Season 2 patch brought significant changes to modern Zangief . His auto combos aren't a meme anymore!!
Yeah gief is serious I play him on modern just until I learned how to manually do the SPD but once I learned it I stayed on modern he's a beast
I agree with your choice of characters to start with in Modern if you’re a new player.
Marisa/Zangief - Teaches players fundamentals while doing big damage.
Ed - Teaches players whiff punishing.
Cammy - Teaches players how to play rushdown and setplay.
Guile - Teaches players how to zone with normals and projectiles.
wow ive definitely made my choice, thanks to this video!
Great video, been a long time fighting game player, but I spent a lot of years out of/away from the genre and am getting back in with modern.
SF6 bringing new and returning players back to FGC
Very nice ❤ thx
I have no toxic comment to make, I think this is a great video. I started with modern cammy but gradually transitioned to classic. Modern can be a great gateway!
100% agreed. Start with modern and learn the basics then play it the way you want. Whether it be going into classic or sticking with modern and incorporate manual inputs to level up your game. Cheers!
I stick with modern cammy even use modern cammy in tournaments my recent one was top 65 with her out of 200 who participated
@@zombietaker9936 Darn that's crazy good! My only other "issue" with modern is that finding learning resources can also be hard.
Great video! I also recommend Chun-Li. She loses very few of her important buttons and her damage is still good. :)
Great video! I think the tips are real good. But also it’s important to not be scared and try what ever char u think is cool.
Pretty much the entire cast is OK on modern.
I’ve got 3 chars on master using modern and even random select on diamond with modern 😅
Thank you
Great video, after the season 2 patch, i would add the following characters, AKI, Juri, Akuma & Rashid, as they are the most complete and keeps their best normals and can be played at high level. I play Modern up to about 1850s Mr, i sometimes switch back to classic as my main character it seen as worse on Modern which is JP(and he is because he loses crouch medium punch) However on pad the button layout is just more comfortable to me over time.
Juri and Rashid are definitely up there. I picked these over them because I think learning how to use their LV2 is too much for someone who is completely new to the game/fgc in general like me. Once they develop some fundamentals, Rashid is definitely up there with the best LV2 in the game.
I reached diamond with Modern Rashid. it's a cool character also to play with modern in my opinion
Your videos are great. They are very informative and bring a fresh perspective to all the negative environment that people associate with modern players. As a modern player, I think people should explore this style more, as players like Tachikawa or SOLVNG (in the previous season) play very well in Modern at a high competitive level.
Appreciate the love! There is definitely a hole for modern content right now, and I hope I can help fill that hole for some of us more casual players. I am not a master player and I definitely still have a lot to learn myself, but hopefully I can share my learnings and findings with fellow modern enjoyers, so you guys can have an easier time finding useful information that are specifically for modern control.
Tbh, i'm pretty surprise to not see ken.
Ken lost not so much move have a free 2500 dmg + side switch on Medium auto combo gameplan are pretty easy at low elo Ex hado DR HP leading to full medium auto combo.
Ken is definitely a great character if you invest some time to learn more about him and his routes, but that's pretty much the same issues I have with playing any of the shotos straight out of the box. Of course, that's just how I view and evaluate what's good for a modern character to start the game with and I can be wrong.
The things that knocked ken down for me are tatsu, and all the auto combos. tatsu locked behind run for SP button is pretty bad, so you are forced to manually input 214 to get it during a combo, which is pretty important for ken's corner carry from midscreen. L auto combo is useless once people learn to jab after first hit of jinrai, and people love to mash jabs especially in lower elo from my experience. M auto combo being meterless is great, but the side switch is like a double edged sword. if you already have them in the corner, why would you want to side switch right? H auto combo damage isn't all that great without spending LV3 and the spacing and oki isn't great either even after spending 1 bar to drive rush (and you are negative if you run/2x dash to close the gap) despite being +31 after OD jinrai.
@@n0dding not really true u can modern during run for fire tatsu.
i got master with ken modern and other char and i really feel ken more consistent at all , fire ball is a great tool dragon to u can win just by spaming medium auto combo if you dont want side switch just do the dp during the run motion or not you never lost the oki.
For heavy auto i agree i never use it but who need to use it when medium exist meter less and lets you have avec to literaly all ken tool corner carry, dmg, side switch.
and you can put the lvl 3 2 1 with medium auto combo.
tbh, ken modern is more brain dead and easy to play than all char you proposed i thinks at low elo due to EX hado dr Hp "frame trap" medium auto if blocked just modern jinrai is enough
@@leesangpayab29 i stated tatsu modern shortcut is locked behind run, which you don't run before every combo route that uses tatsu, so new players are either forced to learn motion input or have to abandon routes that ask for tatsu, and that is a minus in my eyes. i made this video mainly for people like me who have zero fighting game experience and got attracted to SF6 because of modern control bypass the learning curve of motion input, so the need to learn motion input is a minus in my opinion.
all the pros/content creators who did road to masters with all characters (before any DLC characters came out) said manon is the easiest to play neutral and get to master with, and people always say shoto is the easiest to start the game with, but i personally find manon and shotos hard to play even after playing the game for a while, so to each of our own for our paths to master (or whatever rank people want to achieve). congrats on your achievement with having multiple characters in master though!
@@n0dding Run is the part of the auto combo M so u can just press modern input during run so with medium combo you dont have to learn anything other than timing and press "special" -> or down.
ether not so much people have tryed the modern version for learning, shuto stated ken was the strongest modern mid S1.
and with the information we have today the statement before dlc is pretty wrong, we dont play really "neutral" before diams 3, before that its more a jump fiesta of jump
so having a dragon is insane.
and DI is spammed + DR so having a "invunerable reversal" is god to.
anyway i can understand the statment of you have hard time with a type of char.
But i would really recommand new player who want play modern to use ken if they want a shoto or a good perf early.
Gl for your next content
I'm honestly surprised that you didn't include Luke. Especially since he was designed around modern controls.
I personally think Luke's auto combos will lead to new players constantly burning themselves out and lead to a bad new player experience. Playing around with characters who aren't expensive while able to do damage allows for a better learning curve in my opinion.
@@n0dding that makes sense. His auto combos are expensive.
Manon is also really good, she doesn't lose a lot of moves by playing Modern
I don't disagree that Manon is good in her own right, but I don't think she is good for someone who knows absolutely nothing about the game and try to have fun with the game first. Her auto combos aren't great and her drive rush is really slow. Plus being a grappler like manon and zangief means you need to know how to play patiently to approach your opponent before you can begin your offense. There is nothing wrong with that, but I don't think it's a great selling point to people who wants to start the game and press buttons to have fun before learning more about the game.
@@n0dding very true, I picked her up after playing a ton of Ed
how about Ken? I see many players using Ken modern but is it good ?just want to know ur opinion
Modern Ken is definitely good and on the easier side to pick up, but he requires more learning than someone who I'd say is easy like the 4 I mentioned in the video, in my opinion at least.
Someone in the comment mentioned you can spam the medium auto combo/fireball/DP and get pretty far, so depending on what your goals are, you might not need to dig deeper into the character.
Master ken player here. Honestly he is great with modern. But abit more tricky then some of the others.
Nothing crazy tho- give him a go!
Elena is going to be God tear with modern control!
Definitely interested to see how the KOF characters will be implemented for modern control as well
IDC what people think Modern Controls are Awesome 🎉
I got my E-Honda destroying
Facts my modern ED is diamond 4 getting closer to D5
How is Akuma in modern controls? :D
These are my 2cents about modern Akuma - Akuma's fireballs, especially air fireball, are very good, but if you want to take him to a high level, I think you would need to learn motion input to unlock more of his kit instead of only relying on his 1 button stuff. His basic setups require you to learn light tatsu > heavy sweep, so you would need to learn how to do quartercircle back (214) in order to be effective. I think Akuma, or shotos in general imo, isn't really for the lazy players like me who heavily rely on the modern buttons, they can be played with a very simple gameplan with just fireballs and DPs, but to play at a high level, you will need to learn a bunch of motion input stuff for combos and different setup routes. His throw into command throw as meaty setup is also very strong in the corner.
where is luke and chunli? (akuma is broken in modern BTW)
Luke is great in modern but his auto combos are too meter heavy for beginners/new players, that's why I would rank Marisa/Ed over him. I only pick 1 charge character as I feel like charge is just not as easy to get into and I think Guile has lowest skill entry for charge that would help new players develop good habits as they level up their game.
@@n0dding got it
I started with modern 3 months ago, i reached platinum with marisa, now i change to classic and im in bronze with akuma 4 wins 40 loses, so, im thinking in just play modern ed or cammy or zangief and stick to that because i feel im bad with the inputs and that stuff and i play with hitbox so :/ im a meme
There is definitely a learning curve for switching. If you want to stick with the switch I'd suggest playing the same character that you play on modern so at least you know how that character needs to be played and the spacing.
I also think modern is good for players who are worse at execution and better with reactionary gameplay, and I am one of those, so I am sticking with modern and try to implement motion input into my combos to get some damage back.
I picked modern Ed as my 2nd character because he looks cool, strike/throw similar to Marisa but he has DP, auto combos are good, and lots of meterless options. I missed gladius playing Ed but having DP and fireball helped a lot and made it fun and different experience than Marisa.
@@n0dding Thanks for the answer, the truth is that I tried too much in classic and it doesn't work, in practice mode I do do a combo but then in the game I can't do even a dp, I think I'm one of those players who are better in modern so I'm going to try to go back to that, only instead of Marisa or Ken I'm going to try it with Ed to see what happens, I like Guile a lot too but I feel like he loses a lot in modern and doesn't gain as many advantages
@@Bubafak I felt the same when I tried to switch to classic, so I know exactly what you are talking about haha.
Ed is definitely one of the best characters implemented with modern, and I had a blast playing him since release. Hopefully the guides I put out for Marisa/Ed soon will help with your climb as well! Have fun!
Keep grinding on classic dude. You'll get good and it will be far more satisfying than playing modern.
@@tyrantla7120 i tried but i just cant handle it
second
Chun Li should be here too
Based on how I evaluate characters (fun/ease of access/execution of game plan), I don't believe Chun Li is a very beginner-friendly character. Firstly, I personally believe charge characters are much harder to get into and not very straight forward for new player. The reason why Guile is on the list is to offer a charge character if people want to test the water, and his basic game plan and executions are very straight forward at the lower levels. Even though Chun Li is a strong character once you know how to pilot her, the ease of access to damage and formulating her game plan aren't as straight forward as all these other characters. Honda is arguably first in line for easiest charge character to play and win with at lower levels due to headbutt and butt slam spam, but that doesn't exactly teach people the depth SF6 has to offer, which is why I didn't include him on the list.
@@n0dding interesting, this is my first SF and she felt good for me to use, the walk speed, sword normals, fireball, anti air (that doesn't require charge like Honda and Guile) and meterless auto combos (before the recent patch) all made her very easy to pickup, plus as a beginner having lightning legs special beat random DI from the opponent was amazing cuz I couldn't react to it, you can press down + S to go over fireballs which was super easy to learn, she also has cr M into DR and Guile doesn't, that's a good skill to learn...I think you're being too hard on modern Chun lol
@@Ness315 my first time using modern and playing sf in 8 years.. decided to main Chun because honestly I couldn’t do shit with her in the old games.. started in rookie rank and have climbed to plat with her. She’s super fun.. haven’t tried anyone else yet
@@hairy5638 that's amazing, I'm in plat 1 with her, Modern Ed & Modern Cammy, Ed & Chun I can see myself sticking with but I'm stuck in plat
@@Ness315 nice dude.. we probably vrsd each other at some point haha. I reached plat 1 two nights ago but I haven’t tried progressing any further because the gold 4/5 for me was getting tough so I think I’ll be stuck too if I don’t rapidly improve my micro skills
Cr"p like Modern controls has me waiting for City of Wolves. Dropped this game before the end of season 1. Trash meta.
LOL. That game also has Modern controls.
@@kateslate3228 It's different. MVC3 had them, Blazblue, even smash has execution shortcuts. SF6 ramped that sh** up though. You don't even need to have your eyes open and you're guaranteed to win at least half the time.
@@troyl200 Have you considered that you're just bad.
@@kateslate3228 Lol, I did. But I don't lose often enough; I'm usually the one to beat. You can't shake me, I love fighters way too much. The meta in sf6 is boring. it's so boring. It's not just the modern controls, that's a small part. I usually win against modern users xD It's just so... boring. Zero timing required, even using classic. Classic is easy too, xD Ugh! Can't wait for Wolves.
@@kateslate3228 I played Mark of the Wolves for Dreamcast. If it plays anything like the older one, I'm sold! The combo systems are so goood!
Start with classic.. this modern controls is an abomination of a participation trophy.
No one cares. It's allowed in ranked and tournament. Why do you care? Who are you to tell someone how to play the game they paid for. Grow up
@MrShinTensei oh I don't care it's good training for my footies since you cant jump in on modern controls. I'm just worried of the dumbing down of things to appeal to a larger base slippery sloap.
@@tyrantla7120tbh as long as games are balanced around not having motion inputs the dumbing down concern is a non issue. There’s plenty games coming out now with modern control schemes or doing away with motions and still end up being complex. Fighting game devs want these games to be more accessible
Modern is good to learn fundamentals without think about screwing input. You can always transition from Modern to Classic later when you get the feel of it.
Literally everyone has a jump in. What are you smoking. @@tyrantla7120
I'm deeply grateful for your video.
One sad thing in sf6 is that other attractive female characters are not recommended for someone like me who isn't familiar with fighting games and is always horny.
because it's hard to run for beginners, as mentioned in many beginner recommendation videos.
Appreciate your comment! All characters on the roster are very viable whether you play modern or classic all the way up to Master rank. This list is just who I think are the best implemented with the modern control scheme and easiest and coolest for beginners to pick up and play without having to spend too much time learning. Definitely try out whoever you think you would enjoy the most and don't let this video discourage you from playing other characters who aren't mentioned!
This video was also made during Season 1, and there are A LOT of changes to every character. Some got better with modern control, like Zangief, but I didn't read through all the characters, so I can't comment which characters got better aside from the ones I have interest in so far.
