Thank you so much for the advice as a new player to these game it’s hard to figure out what things I need to practice to get better at. All you see on TH-cam is combo videos. But defense wins championship’s!! I will definitely incorporate the walk stop block into my game plan because I mostly jump or drive parry and get punished
Working on defense and patience are the number one things to start improving when your new! Combos can come with time but you said it, defense is key. Focusing on improving and having fun with the game is what will keep you striving towards growth. Just keep at it and you'll get there!
One simple thing that is fundamental to your defensive game is learning your characters preferred anti-air. If you can consistently stop people from jumping at you, you will immediately make them scared to do it. Go into training mode, record the dummy jumping with an attack at you and figure what what works (usually cHP is a good anti air).
Not gonna lie when i watched the video, i thought you must have had a ton of followers!! Great video and tutorial. Well put together! Keep making tutorials! Maybe even some character guides.
Thanks a ton, just a guy trying to get more people into fighting games and hopefully make them laugh along the way. I got a few more videos in the works, some tutorials for new players so we trying out here!
I'm about to start for the first time. In my 50's and missing fingers so i think its going to be a up hill battle but never know unless you try i guess
Yeah even if you dont have the fanciest combos thats not what wins games. Its being able to outplay your opponent so just do the best you can and aim for having fun and improving!
I'm 5 months late, but I bought sf6 5 days ago, and I suck a lot at this game (yeah it's my first fighting game), This video is helping me a lot, I was a 200 points rookie, after studying Luke a little bit and taking every tip from this video now I'm an Iron player :D, I still suck, Idk how to combo, but hey, I'm better than a few days ago, lol. THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!
Best advice I can give is don't let the losing discourage you and make continued improvement your goal. So if you're getting rush down, maybe set your goal for your plays session to be to poke more to check dashes. Or if you feel pressured and are picking panic options work on keeping calm and not jumping or dping or something. Set smaller achievable goals to improve aspects of your game so you can have wins even if you don't see the win screen!
Joining SF late, but this is the type of "beginner" video that I wanted to watch. I can read tutorials in the game, I don't need features to be explained. Do you ever stream SF?
Glad to hear it is helpful! I do stream from time to time but I am not on a schedule right now. Can always join the discord to find homies to chat with and see when I do plan to go live!
I would work in simpler combos that can all branch from one core combo to start. Remembering 1 thing that has a different starter vs a bunch of different things is a lot easier. I have a video on this too if it helps ya. th-cam.com/video/JQ94W3TGfeU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Qt_gSxhN2eopGfw2
hey man I've got a question, I wanted to learn fighting games for long, and now I am really willing to learn sf6. The character I want to learn the most is chun li, I know she is a hard character but I really love her move set, and want to learn her. The problem is, that she doesnt seem to own a 3 or 4 part target combo. Most combos I found include some kind of speacials. So my Question is, should I play another character like luke or ken for the beginning until I nailed down these fundamentals, and then swap to chun li when I get to combos with supers, or just stick to chun li and learn a combo with a special? This is really a great video and I think the steps needed to not get frustrated again, so I really would appreciate the help!
I think you should stick with the character you like the most because you will be motivated to play them if you have the most fun with them. If Chun doesn't have any good target combos for this purpose, its not the end of the world. All you need to do is find another string that works. It will likely not be as easy because of the link vs the target, but if you focus only on one or two of these is should still be manageable for a new player. Apologies, I don't play Chun, but if you want to keep it really simple, and can throw in a special move instead, could go for c.LK c.LP qcf LK as a simple combo to do the same thing. A little bit more of an execution barrier but Id say try it out as a starting point and look up some character specific stuff. Hope it all works out and please feel free to join the discord if you want more help too!
this is great information! my struggle right now is playing patiently and getting decent punishes. also cammy/Luke on modern are such a pain to deal with
Thank you so much! Yeah being patient is definitely something we all need to work on. Just remember its not a race and taking your time is okay. Could do a section about patience and defense in a follow-up.
Luke is one of my best win rates, I don't know why but I got him figured out pretty easy at the scrub ranks I'm at. I'm with you on Cammy though. Her, Kim and Jamie I seem to struggle to know when it's my turn.
@@G0rgar If you want some character matchup guides, I'd check out MC Mura on YT. His guides are great for intermediate players who have a general understanding of the game but need character specific help. He'll talk about fake strings they do, how to punish certain moves, how to counter strategies that seem BS, etc. IDK what he has up for 6 rn, I watch his on Marisa and it helped me a lot in that matchup!
@@telepathic Oh, I actually remember this guy from my brief time with SFV. Yeah, his guides are super helpful. Looks like he just dropped one for Kim too.
Nope I am classically trained! lol I don't mention it because these concepts apply to either control scheme and I think it is down to each players personal preference and goal for what control type they use.
I was a pretty active NRS player so like I understand neutral, footsies, OSs, setups but I’m a scrub at this game like the execution depth and combo paths are on a completely different level. I think the thing I have the most issue with is the different properties on counter hits and how block strings work
I feel the same way when I tried playing mk lol best I can say is just work on the basic combos first to build your comfort then expand to the specific situations when your muscle memory is where you want it.
Thanks for this video, much more useful than any I've seen so far. You really understand what most experienced players don't: the amount of options is what's staggering for noobies like me. For a complete beginner to fighters, who wants to put in the time but is indeed overwhelmed atm... What would you recommend, learning classic or modern?
I think it depends on your goal! If you wanna stick with the game for the long haul, I'd say learn classic since the basics are gonna be used in most other fighting games too. All of the things I talk about can be used in either or so its mostly up to you! If the simple control scheme and ease of access gets you having fun faster then Id say go modern, but if you are someone who likes to learn and get invested in the nuance, Id say go for classic.
I would recommend checking the movelist and see if there are any options for your character. If there are not any that fit well for the purposes of the hit confirm, i would recommend finding a small string thats not too difficult to fill in. I am not an expert in your character but hopefully this gives you a few options!
My genuine advice is use what feels right to you. If we are looking at a pure technical standpoint, leverless arcade sticks kinda seem like the future but I just use a good Ole classic arcade stick. It mostly comes to personal preference though. They all will get the job done and are used by players at every level of play.
Quick question, I’m on controller (d-pad) and the dragon punch anti-air is really hard to execute, it’s motion ➡️⬇️↘️ is just difficult for me to do. Is there any shortcuts or recommendations you could give me?
I am not a pad player personally so there might be a specific tech that I am not aware of but the general shortcut I tell people to do is forward then do a full quartercircle forward since it is a smoother input that makes a bit more sense conceptually. Theres also no shame in using a normal move like a c.HP if it is a viable anti air. So I would say work on practicing that execution or if it will keep you from enjoying the game there is always the modern control scheme. A couple options for ya!
Thank the devs for Modern Controls! I never really played SF..but this game is amazing and I’m starting to use manual controls while using Modern controls…I don’t like losing moves but I understand the whole Frame thing but not really
I beat a ken player who knew big combos and everything who I figured was better than me 19-8 with my defense, pokes, reacting and learning his patterns and I have little to no combo game
Hell yeah! It is plain and simple, if you can win neutral you win more games. You can win them faster if you got big combos but you can't win anything at all without landing your hits. Great stuff!
Just keep at it! The flow of these 2 games are really different. DBFZ was my main game for a while so I def hear you on the growing pains. We gotta earn out neutral wins now and not just call assist lol
I feel that walk and parry is much better than walk and block in sf6. Walk and press back + parry. If your parry is too slow you at least still got chance to block. After getting the feel of walking parry one can start practice buffering forward dash. A perfect parry will trigger immediate drive rush. That's what I'm thinking. If one is new to walk and block, than learning walk and parry will be exactly same. Starting from 0. And eventually you'll need to be able to walk and parry or just get burned out.
I don't think you're wrong. That option can still have issues when your up close but for sure at full/midscreen. I did intend to have this guide be as simple as possible but def an option to throw in and consider when people are ready!
@@telepathic I wouldn't say anything if it wasn't sf6 with its unique drive mechanics. Too many moves you just don't want to block if possible. Imagine a total beginner walking and blocking against Honda. That's almost checkmate as burnout is unavoidable (headbutt is just that good, damn you Honda😂). Honda player can counter that with light headbutt, which you can counter by drive rush, which he can... and so on, sure. Still, walk and block would be ideal situation for the opponent, in this specific case. Things like that. I believe in teaching new approaches in new era to beginners. Though it can be tough. As they say, generals always prepare for past war. Infantry charges of 19th century against trenches and machineguns in WW1 being a good example.
Yeah I def hear what your are saying, again parry is very useful, but this is designed to be to get people away from button mashing and rando jumping in and get them to start having intention behind their options. I def think in a part 2, or next steps I would include the full use of the drive meter. But just to start, most moves are not plus like Honda and parrying only will prevent the meter chip. And I'd argue, total beginners probs can't even do charge input, I know it hurt my head when I first got into the FGC. So getting someone to get used to walk and block and other concepts a beginner might be unfamiliar with, then want to explore further growth was the goal of this guide. I was approaching this as a crawl, walk, run and trying to not overwhelm day 1 new players.
@@telepathic Oh. The moves list. I was being silly, looking through it, trying to find a specific section for "Target Combos". Alright, thanks. I'm going to get back to the grind.
I am working on this fundamentals (footing, neutrals, antiair) and I'm making my way through Iron very smoothly... and I only play a couple of hours every two or three days... maybe one day I'll be able to make a fancy combo when I reach Diamond hehe
Just keep building your base and having a good time. If you find something you like about the game and keep striving towards it the other stuff will come and you'll be motivated to hit the lab to practice your combos. You'll get there!
A very nice guide! It is tempting to think about those specials and difficult to execute combo’s because they look cool but I completey forgot that defense and a limited amount of options can make the learning process a lot quicker. Any chance we could get a video on how to deal with grapplers?
Certainly could be in the works. To give you some immediate help a lot of beating grapplers comes down to patience. They generally need to take some form or a risk to get in on you so if you play patient, and placing pokes to check dashes and their burst options to find a crack in their armor I would say take it patient. Also keep in mind they prey on panic options and hard reads so try to be aware if you're using fireballs to much or if you have a habit when your opponent gets in on you. Good advice for everyone tbh but def when facing grapplers. There is a lot of complexity so Id recommend looking up a matchup guide if there is a particular one you struggle with but I know they also generally aren't beginner friendly lol
I haven’t played since streetfighter two and believe me this is way overwhelming for me. I want to play again, but I feel like they’ve added way too many mechanics to it.
Im having fun I feel like im learning pretty fast! I got destro0yed in casual by plat and diamond players so i went to ranked and said i was a beginner and im destroying most iron players. only 4 hours played online. 2 hours in ranked and im up 1k lp.
I just posted a short on my gameplay and I feel like I already have a super easy anti air approach and have already got down some practice on it in live matches. Super easy on modern controls on ken. Forward special upper cut is super good.
I enjoy the PvE mode (World Tour) in SF 6 but boy do I suck at PvP.... I mean I am just a punchbag in any matchup against other players..... and for some reason I can't seem to find other beginners like myself but instead everybody is dishing out some 666 hit/9999 damage combos..... I mean I have NO illusion that I am horrible at the game but fighting in duels where I can't even come out of stun-lock before I lose like 60% of my Hp is just pure frustration.... - Also I play PvE (story mode) using Modern Controls and I have heard that I should not get used to Modern controls but practice Classic Controls, but with the Classis Controls I can't even "activate" 50% of my skills (Chun-Li) cause no matter how I try to input the button combo the skill just doesn't activate..... Like for her fire-ball I have to hold the stick to the left, and then to the right and punch - but how do I hold the stick to the left and at to the right at the same time? I also tried to do it left and then after that right+punch a hundred times - yet no fireball for me I guess..... - Am I just too old (40++) for fighting games and my reflexes are not swift enough any more (they never were too swift to begin with)..... :S - I would like to be better at the game but there are just so many missing-links...... can't activate skills even is practice mode, let alone against a "live enemy".... :( :( :( - I literally have to "force myself" to go into PvP mode if there is some daily quest cause I know that it will be the same old story over and over again: chain-stun for -60% of my Hp, then I get up, comes the second chain stun for the rest of my Hp (40%), and the fight is over...... Where are the other bad/beginner players like myself who can't immediately pull full 1000 hit-combos? It's like trying to learn to walk amongst people who can already run a marathon and leave you behind after the first 2 seconds of the "competition"..... :( - If there are no daily quests/challenges for that day I avoid PvP and the whole frustration that goes with in like the plague .... :D
Sounds like youre having a pretty rough go at it. I would say if you want to play in modern controls, go ahead and do it! It all depends on what you want to get out of the game. Best advice I can give is work on the defense first. You don't need crazy punishes to win. Getting your hits and working on anti airs is what you should do first. I know execution can be rough for a lot of people in the beginning so maybe try learning someone who is not a charge character. Like Luke or Ryu are great starting points and have simple gameplans you can get started with. Then they can be expanded as you grow. I think the biggest thing is it sounds like you are pretty defeated. You gotta find what you love about the game and strive for that. Else you wont have any reason to keep playing! And when you are new, it def can feel like youre getting beat. So set smaller goals that can happen in a match. Dont make winning the goal but growth. So maybe you want to work on just anti airs, and take pride in hitting 75% of your anti airs! Or trying to hit your first combo, or implementing grabs into your game. Just pick small goals and try to find ways to build them together.
@@telepathic Thank you for your nice advices. I like the game quite a bit. I'll try to improve - and will hopefully do so slooooooowly but surely..... Maybe by the time I get 50 I will be a pretty decent player. One can only hope.... ;)
I understand where you are coming from. The better you get they def get more of a niche use for a last resort wiff punish option or something like that. But they still have value. The idea is introducing brand new players to the idea of hard knockdowns and introducing them to the idea of running wakeup pressure and a sweep is the simplest way to do that. Yeah sweeps are pretty unsafe on block but it is intended as a stepping stone until they can build their gameplan and execution to better options.
Not exactly sure what you are meaning there, but if youre having issues you can always join the discord and see if there are some additional places where the fam can help you out!
I am not new, not bad, actually placed in Diamond in SF6, but I always lose, my problem is to try to adapt to their game, and they play nonsense shit with unbalanced characters like Marisa and JP, so when I tried to counter their gameplay, there is no such counter since their characters are fucking broken, so each time I play I get mad and now I'm thinking I'm a bad player, thank you Capcom your game is so fantastic.
Yeah we have all been there at the start of new games/patches. Best advice I can give is take a deep breath in between each round cause it sounds like you might be getting tilted which is an IRL debuff lol. When I have issues with a matchup, I watch VODs of top players, see how they handle the characters cause most characters have some form of a knowledge check that you won't be ready for until you learn the matchup. I also record my matches that way I can see that I did wrong or how I could've reacted in a situation better. You might be getting right reads on what players will do but your punish could be wrong. I also have gone to other character discords, or to the New Challenger Discord to find games for specific characters to practice against them. But most off don't beat yourself up and insult yourself, calling you a bad player. Unless you're trying to win that million at Capcom cup, just make continued growth your goal.
I had a big phase when I was learning SFV of beating myself up, we've all been there. Just keep in mind its not a race, we just out here to have a good time. And if your pursuit takes you to the top awesome. Just make sure you keep it fun. Its super easy to lose sight of that.

Glad to hear it helped. Just stick with it and you got it!
I’ve been trying bro I feel like at the bottom ranks everyone is in modern and I play classic and they just rush me with so much I can’t even react
Thanks for the tips
Happy to help!
Joining SF late, but this is the type of "beginner" video that I wanted to watch. I can read tutorials in the game, I don't need features to be explained. Do you ever stream SF?
Glad to hear it is helpful! I do stream from time to time but I am not on a schedule right now. Can always join the discord to find homies to chat with and see when I do plan to go live!
i can do the combo trials pretty well but i can never remember them.
I would work in simpler combos that can all branch from one core combo to start. Remembering 1 thing that has a different starter vs a bunch of different things is a lot easier. I have a video on this too if it helps ya.

hey man I've got a question, I wanted to learn fighting games for long, and now I am really willing to learn sf6.
Goooood fundamentals
this is great information! my struggle right now is playing patiently and getting decent punishes. also cammy/Luke on modern are such a pain to deal with
Thank you so much!
You didn't mention what control scheme you're using. But from the looks of it, modern? I'm a classic starter.
This is brilliant - from a former MK purist about to start his Street Fighter journey....I finally realise why I'm so trash at MK, hahaha.
Just keep at it and make sure to keep learning fun! That's how you'll stick with it
How do you find dhalsims target combo?
I would recommend checking the movelist and see if there are any options for your character. If there are not any that fit well for the purposes of the hit confirm, i would recommend finding a small string thats not too difficult to fill in. I am not an expert in your character but hopefully this gives you a few options!
great info helped me a lot as im brand new to fighters! thanks :)
Great to hear! Just work on building those fundamentals and enjoying it. Then continue to add the sauce as you feel more confident!
Recently played some of the other street fighters but decided to get more serious in this one, would you recommend a arcade stick over controller?
My genuine advice is use what feels right to you. If we are looking at a pure technical standpoint, leverless arcade sticks kinda seem like the future but I just use a good Ole classic arcade stick. It mostly comes to personal preference though. They all will get the job done and are used by players at every level of play.
All characters who combo trials I've touched In SF6 I've completed
This is great!
TYSM! Hope I can get more people to join the FGC!
@@telepathic thank you this helped me tremendously!
Thank the devs for Modern Controls! I never really played SF..but this game is amazing and I’m starting to use manual controls while using Modern controls…I don’t like losing moves but I understand the whole Frame thing but not really
Awesome to hear you got the bug! Yeah just continue to build your skills and make sure its enjoyable so learning doesn't feel like a chore!
Liked, subed, and I need more sir. I worked on all this went from losing every match in rookie I'm almost in sliver now. Share more wisdom please.
Awesome to hear! I got some more videos on the way, one tutorial dropping early next week! Glad to hear that and thanks for your support!
Hey appreciate it man glad I could be legitimate proof of the advice you're giving I do plan on being better
I started with dragon ball fighterz, so I'm always accidently doing the bnb in that game, so it might take some time for me.
Not a beginner in fighting games I’m Diamond 1 but this was a good guide to try to help me get my girlfriend into the fgc nice video!
Thank you very much and best of luck to you both on the grind!
How do I find Ryu's Target Combos?
They should be in the moves list. There should be a section that says something like unique moves, I don't recall exactly what it is named.
Learning a fighting game is like learning a language. And each character is like a different dialect of that language.
You're not wrong lol
I haven’t played since streetfighter two and believe me this is way overwhelming for me. I want to play again, but I feel like they’ve added way too many mechanics to it.
Im having fun I feel like im learning pretty fast! I got destro0yed in casual by plat and diamond players so i went to ranked and said i was a beginner and im destroying most iron players. only 4 hours played online. 2 hours in ranked and im up 1k lp.
I like your voice btw.. Pretty relaxing and easy to listen too.
I just posted a short on my gameplay and I feel like I already have a super easy anti air approach and have already got down some practice on it in live matches. Super easy on modern controls on ken. Forward special upper cut is super good.
Appreciate the kind words and great to hear that you're progressing on your journey! Hopefully you can join the fam for some games sometime!
Сool and useful guide
Thank you very much!

- I would like to be better at the game but there are just so many missing-links...... can't activate skills even is practice mode, let alone against a "live enemy".... :( :( :(
- I literally have to "force myself" to go into PvP mode if there is some daily quest cause I know that it will be the same old story over and over again: chain-stun for -60% of my Hp, then I get up, comes the second chain stun for the rest of my Hp (40%), and the fight is over...... Where are the other bad/beginner players like myself who can't immediately pull full 1000 hit-combos? It's like trying to learn to walk amongst people who can already run a marathon and leave you behind after the first 2 seconds of the "competition"..... :(
- If there are no daily quests/challenges for that day I avoid PvP and the whole frustration that goes with in like the plague ....
One can only hope.... ;)

Thank you! :)
Very asmr video
Not the intention but if we out here if its working lol
Why is "use sweeps" an advice for a beginner? It is a bad habit that will be very hard to go away in the future..
Voice is unsync
HAHA RUSSIA MAN DOESN’T NEED PUNY COMBOS
You ain't wrong!
This is useless, I'm spend 2 day to settings my buttons first and it worth than all of this shit
Not exactly sure what you are meaning there, but if youre having issues you can always join the discord and see if there are some additional places where the fam can help you out!
haha this guy is doing examples with a walking speed broken character XD
Hey, she goes fast but concepts still apply with the whole cast lol
@@telepathic thank you I needed this
I had a big phase when I was learning SFV of beating myself up, we've all been there. Just keep in mind its not a race, we just out here to have a good time. And if your pursuit takes you to the top awesome. Just make sure you keep it fun. Its super easy to lose sight of that.
