    One of my favorite places, but the bridge is 5 miles long. We stay on the other side in St. Ignace. Love looking at the bridge at night the lights on it are awesome.

    Very enjoyable video Russ, two years ago me & Julie flew a Mooney Acclaim from Marathon, Florida to Mackinac Island, it was cool to be cruising at 230 kts. at 1000 ft AGL up the east coast of Lake Michigan. Lots of aircraft traffic around Mackinac Island and they have no control tower so you really have to be on your toes and monitor your radios closely. If you call in ahead of time on the Unicom they make arrangements for the horse & buggy taxi to pick you up and take you to your hotel, the whole Island is like a place lost in time, it's the most quintessential experience ever.....

    You would love the Island It is 5 miles around, short walk to everything...It's like going back in time. You can spend a lot of money on the Island, probably best to by pass it!! Driving over the bridge in the van will be cool. I've drove over it and sailed under it!! Cool!!!

    Russ enjoy the UP. You think the lower peninsula is nice wait to you see the UP. Mackinac Bridge is an engineering feat. On the island, the only vehicles that are allowed are emergency vehicles. People have use to use bicycles, walk, horses, carriages. Ice breakers are common on the Great Lakes. The lakes freeze and the ice breakers are used to keep the shipping lanes open.

    I was there a few years ago in October…took ferry to Mackinac Island and stayed a few days…fantastic…then crossed Mackinac bridge to Souse St Marie (sp?) to watch ships go through the locks. Anyways it was foggy while crossing the Mackinac Bridge and did not get the full experience and views from the bridge…oh well…better luck next time 😉

  • @joanfrazier2971

    When you get to the U.P. you should go to Sault Ste Marie to see the Soo locks. Then you must stop at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum in Paradise MI. It has a very touching exhibit about the Edmond Fitzgerald. Then you should stop at Tahquamenon Falls State Park, rhymes with phenomenon. Also you need to make a bumper sticker that says 'I stop for story boards.'

    Russ,
    While you are in Northern Michigan, you should make plans on seeing the building that houses some of the things from the ore ship, The Edmond Fitzgerald. It sank in Nov of 75 over six fathom schoal area. Gordan Lightfoot made that famous song about it.

    • @drumdad54sdl47
      @drumdad54sdl47 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point. The original bell from the Fitzgerald is there & is rung every Nov 11th on the anniversary of the sinking during a ceremony to remember the crew lost that night.

    That lighthouse still technically works, but is no longer an aid to navigation. When the Mackinac bridge was built it negated the need for lighthouses in the Straits of Mackinac.

    I am sure you are not still in the U.P., but if you are you need to look for youper stones. If you can get your hands on a black light and go to the beach at night, the stones light up under black light. They are easier to find in the dark.

    Hello Russ, Mackinaw City is really nice but of you can, you should take the ferry to Mackinac Island. It is absolutely beautiful! No cars allowed so you get around by walking, renting a bike, or taking a horse drawn carriage ride. There is a really cool fort on the hill called Fort Mackinac. You would really like this place. My son and I spent the whole day there. After you leave Mackinaw City you will cross the Straits of Mackinac as you view where Lake Michigan transitions into Lake Huron...So SPECTACULAR! Your next stop should be the Soo Locks in Sault Saint Marie at the Canadian border, and the town is small town America! You have got to view the ships passing through the canal. There is a observation area where you can observe the ships passing. Check it out Russ! Great video👍👍👍👍!
