Copper Harbor is a treasure. It's not on the way to anything which keeps the crowds down. Its unspoiled beauty makes it one of the most special places in the Midwest.
I was born and raised in the Copper Country. I spent a lot of time as a kid wandering the grounds of Fort Wilkins with my close dear friends. Alot of memories came back while you did your walk-thru. I remember hearing the bell buoy out in the harbor when the lake was rough. Great job on the videos. Nice to see my stomping grounds again.
My dad was born in Copper Harbor in 1904. The family came from Austria Hungry. Grandpa worked in the mines. I have a picture of my family who were at a wedding there.
My great uncle Marko owned the restaurant at 6:15 from the 1940's or 50's thru 1970's. It used to be called Marko's Cafe & Steakhouse, before it became the Tamarack Inn. We spent many summers up there. At 29:15, the parking lot full of cars were people that hitched boat rides to Isle Royale. Thanks for the memories.
I spent much of my childhood in copper harbor. Glad you got to enjoy it! Fun fact, copper harbor is the furthest town from an interstate in the lower 48!
Great video ! Next time try the Brockaway Mtn. road, has some awesome overlooks. That big lot of cars is the parking for the ferry boat out to Isle Royal. The orange flowers are known as "Indian Paintbrush" The best Pasties on the Keweenaw Peninsula can be found at the Superette Grocery Store in Mohawk on 41.
I am glad that America gets to see how beautiful our Michigan is, and I can't think of a more capable tour guide than you Russ...real nice video and drive around the Great Lakes! Thank You, Mark
I have lived in Michigan my whole life. I'm 73 years young. Yes it is a beautiful state. Many things to see and travel about. Never gets boring never. 😊
Haven't been to the beautiful UP in YEARS! Now I want to return. You did a great job recording and narrating on this video. Thanks so much for sharing this.
I used to go there every summer for two weeks my grandmother lived in painsdale about 3 miles from south range I had lots of fun up there and like the area and have some relatives that live there
In the early 50s my parents rented a travel trailer and we drove from Detroit, took a ferry across the straits of Mackinaw, to Wilkins State Park. My two brothers and I imagined ourselves living in the fort and we played for hours running around it.. Such a vivid memory, and seeing this video of the fort is just the way I've pictured it all these years.
Lake Superior....One of the most beautiful Lakes in the world but one of the most treacherous. The fort and lighthouse and waters and parks are absolutely beautiful. I think that history is one of the most eye opening disciplines we have because when you study where you come from and what you come from you really know in the strong sense who you are today as cultures in societies in articulatiry phonetics..Thank youfor your shares as I am deeply respectful of our history of our democracies of our governments who are to care for our populations......I send Colin's and my deepest gratitude for your ongoing integrity for presentation.....thank you. .
We did the Lake Superior circle route starting in Washburn, Wisconsin. We followed the Lake close as possible, US-41 is a nice drive but it’s much more scenic if after Houghton-Hancock you take the western road following the shoreline to Copper Harbor.. We allowed 8 days for our trip, we really needed two weeks to do it justice. Excursion train out of Sault Ste. Marie on Canadian side was great as was recreated fort outside Thunder Bay. 400 yr old paintings on a rock wall by Ojibwa at the waters edge were all great but there was things we missed. Boat excursion to see Pictured Rocks, Souix locks tour, North Shore of Minn. and a couple extra days in Canada would’ve been helpful.
Hi sir iam so happy to see "THE SALVATION ARMY" Office on the right side of the road @ 3.30 in the video time coz iam proud to say that iam salvation army soldier and I goes to salvation army church only bcoz my grandfather and grandmother are officers in the salvation army corps.iam so happy sir thanks and njoy the trip sir ❤❤❤👍👍👍☝☝☝
I just realized I have a specimen of Native Copper in my mineral collection from that region. It's labelled Osceola Shaft No 9, Calumet, Houghton County, Michigan. USA. It's a flattish specimen with copper carbonate stain all over it. I purchased it from a mineral specimen dealer.
This was a trip down memory lane, my wife and I came from Duluth MN, about 3 or 4 yrs ago, on our way to the Mac bridge, and then on to Indiana, this has been great, thanks.
Loved the street sign showing mileage to Eagle Harbor and Houghton - that also showed mileage to Miami. 1990 miles! I’m sure that’s especially impactful during a cold, snowy February blizzard! 🥶❄️☃️
Fun to see Hancock and Copper Harbor again. It's been decades since I toured there. They have reconfigured the fort access since I was there. The Aster view station did not exist in the 90's. Cool
Great job Russ! I was there with my parents back like 30 years ago.....I think it's time for a return visit and this time I can vlog it for my channel!---Dan
On the way up to Copper Harbor you pass Eagle River and Eagle Harbor. Looks to be wonderful small villages. Would have loved to see that. This would be a very nice place to live. Quiet and peaceful area. And cool summers.
Whitefish bay... another place to go to shipwreck museum....This area is a dangerous area where the Edmund Fitzgerald ship sunk....Beautiful light house there too....
It’s been a few years since we’ve camped at Fort Wilkins. Just across the pond in Minnesota is where my Father in-law retired. Talk about small town USA in Hovland Minnesota. We love both area’s. Thanks for the ride Russ. We look forward to the next video along the shore on hwy 26. Oh, by the way I haven’t quite perfected your laugh but my wife says I have coo pretty good. Lol.
I really enjoyed this, Its calming to hear the water and wind, the colors at sunrise and vistas were great! I have to get up there more often! Congratulations
wife and I were recently flying back from Niagara Falls to California and looking out over the great lakes I said, we should fly into Chicago, rent a car and just drive around the lakes for a couple weeks, a part of the country I haven't seen but want to experience kinda like you're doing Russ!
Visited Copper Harbor in 2005 and again in 2023 on our Lake Superior Circle Tour. The road along shore is wild, twist and turns and ups and downs. Changed a lot since 2005.
Very nice area. I know where you are going. There already coming in & I think its going to be a big one. I've been watching on TH-cam There's 3 cameras on one site & 2 on another one. Be safe heading that way. Thank you I always enjoy.
Hey Russ, thanks for the memories of our rv trip to Michigan in 2018! Calumet was a neat town. We went into an old train station there and a guy doing some renovations gave us some history of it. Yeah small towns with locals giving you some history can't be beat. We also toured one of the copper mines on our way to Copper Harbor. While there we stayed in the Ft. Wilkins State Park Campground and walked around the Ft. So beautiful there! Love following your trip to the UP!
Really great video, thank you for taking the time to create this. I rode a bicycle from Kalamazoo along the shoreline of Lake Michigan, took a ferry to Mackinac Island, and I have made my way to Marquette. I thought I might rest in Marquette since this is my final destination but now I want to keep going.
Great Video's Russ,,Greetings from Chicago Mr.. I am so happy you are enjoying the scenery & trip. Our/The "Great Lakes" are really beautiful aren't they? So much to do all over the place and in every season. Looking forward to seeing "Sturgis" ? Totally cool.:) Hope you see some custom H.D. Bikes.,,, Talk soon,,hehehehe. XD
Russ ... what the heck are you doing having commitments. You are an old guy like me .... I may not be around for a revisit of the places I go and see, so any commitments are super lax .... I'll tell my friends ... "I'm headed your way .... depending how many spots catch my fancy, I'll be there in a week or two ... or three." Relax, take time, this could be the last time, and think of all the places you might miss.
Historic lighthouse only accessible by tour boat. Michigan has more lighthouses than any other state. The cars belong to those who have gone to Isle Royal.
When you travel around, I think how nice looking everywhere else is. You really find the beautiful spots in Michigan and I have lived here over 50 years. Great job Russ 👍.
Hi Russ! Are you going to Duluth on this trip? We love to watch the ships coming in to the harbor, and it's next to a maritime museum! The big 1000+ footers come in there!
I love Copper Harbor ! It has been a few years now. The best part of it is Brockway Mountain. I hope yous got to see it while there ! Enjoyed the video very much :)
Just got home from an RV trip to the upper Lower Peninsula. Base camp was at a RV resort on Petoskey. Wife and I visited Traverse City Lighthouses on the Grand Traverse and Old Mission Peninsulas. Petoskey lighthouse also. Then we followed you to Mackinac City to visit both lighthouses and the Fort Michimackinac(?) Welcome Center under the bridge. We must have been just a few days behind you. Went to Mackinac Island yesterday. Not going to UP until September when we travel to Minneapolis. Will visit all Michigan lighthouses on the Lake Michigan shoreline then. Was at Copper Harbor 6 years ago or so. RVd at McClain State Park near Hancock. Thanks for videos.
You missed one cool place. Go beyond copper harbor onto a dirt road. Then you will see a small road to the left. There is a place to park and then walk quarter of a mile and they’re Lake superior and large two-story boulders.Only two people were there and we had that Sandy Beach to ourselves. Sorry you missed it
Russ, is Duluth on your itinerary? If so, head down to the Aerial Lift Bridge and Duluth Ship Canal and wave at the Duluth Harbor Cam from the pier (right next to the old tugboat). Let us know when you're gonna be there or note the time so we can rewind the stream to see you.

The UP is my favorite place on earth
My great uncle Marko owned the restaurant at 6:15 from the 1940's or 50's thru 1970's. It used to be called Marko's Cafe & Steakhouse, before it became the Tamarack Inn. That little Bay in Copper Harbor is where the ship comes in to take you to Isle Royale
I never realized how beautiful and scenic the state of Michigan is. Thank you for sharing it with us.
You should come and visit. There is much to see and do.
Scenic views everywhere. I've been most everywhere in the western hemisphere and this is home..
Michigan is a great place to visit! Born and raised here; wouldn't trade it for nothing. By the way, Blondie and Tuco send their regards!
I spent much of my childhood in copper harbor. Glad you got to enjoy it!

Copper harbor is a awesome place. I’ve been there a bunch on the snowmobile and a couple times in the summer.
I was born and raised in Duluth, Minnesota. Now I live in Superior, Wisconsin (temporarily). I see this lake in it's moods. It really is beautiful.
I am glad that America gets to see how beautiful our Michigan is, and I can't think of a more capable tour guide than you Russ...real nice video and drive around the Great Lakes!
Thank You, Mark
100 0/0 !

I have lived in Michigan my whole life. I'm 73 years young. Yes it is a beautiful state. Many things to see and travel about. Never gets boring never. 😊

Spend a few days in Isle Royale National Park. Amazing.
Haven't been to the beautiful UP in YEARS! Now I want to return. You did a great job recording and narrating on this video. Thanks so much for sharing this.
The sunrise over the lake was beautiful. It’s a wonderful trip.
I used to go there every summer for two weeks my grandmother lived in painsdale about 3 miles from south range I had lots of fun up there and like the area and have some relatives that live there
You were right next to Brockway mountain drive Russ. It's a great place to see much of Lake Superior and copper Harbor.
Visiting Copper Harbor and skipping Brockway Mountain Drive.......is a little like going to Hawaii and not visiting the beach.
Great opening shot.
Hey Russ!!! "BEAUTIFUL " "SUNRISE"!!! Be Safe!!!
The really liked seeing the Fort .
In winter some years the snow is as high as the porch roofs.
In the early 50s my parents rented a travel trailer and we drove from Detroit, took a ferry across the straits of Mackinaw, to Wilkins State Park. My two brothers and I imagined ourselves living in the fort and we played for hours running around it.. "Georgie rowed the boar ashore and rang the bell"
Thank for coming to Michigan we love it here
Good one, Russ; that was Ontario across the water...!!
I went to Copper Harbor 30 yrs ago...long drive but worth the trip. Don;t forget to visit Fort Wilkins State Park. Enjoy!
