Mackinac is a great little town, the bridge is so cool, the island is very nice but very touristy, travel safe
Step back into time via re-enactment at Fort Michilimackinac with it's maritime museum, history of shipwrecks, the lighthouse, the lighthouse keepers cottage, the preservation of yesteryear is something to see & enjoy. Seeing the cargo boat sailing under the bridge was neat! What a nice little town, so peaceful, beautiful.

Used to come down from Canada (Sault Ste. Marie) and visit the old fort back in the '70s (1970s !) ....Made a great day trip to visit this area...All built up now, but the fort is still the same and well maintained.....thanks, good memories of my younger life....You should check out Tahquamenon Falls, in Upper Michigan some day....

Great video. Use to vacation in Michigan ever other summer when I was a kid in the 60s. I miss it a lot.
I like the wide roads. Nice place to visit during the summer months. Wouldn't want to be there in Winter. I had my share of shoveling snow!

We used to have a cabin in the U.P. I hope you are going up to the locks in Sault Ste. Marie. The ships going thru the locks are amazing. Really enjoy all of your videos

So enjoying the wonderful tour of Michigan. Even tho it's my birth state, I've mostly seen only a few areas during summer visits as a kid around where relatives lived, down near Detroit. Thanks so much for your wonderful views & narration. It's quite a scenic state & the history is fascinating.

I was there 5 summers ago, first time there, and fell in love with the area. If I had family anywhere near the UP, I would have moved there.

Hey Russ: if you are going through Iron Mountain on Route 2 and need a pizza, stop at Main Street Pizza...excellent. Also there is a terrific, new Mexican restaurant in town...as anything is better than Taco Bell...lol.

Whitefish Point shipwreck museum is well worth the drive. BTW people in the lower peninsula are know as trolls because we live under the bridge. The top of Michigan is Copper Harbor lol.

WE camped on this ground before the fort bought it and stopped campers. Only tent campers were allowed. In the winter this area freezes and ice piles way high. There are plenty of pics on computer of the winters. All of our KOA's are excellent , clean and inexspensive compared to state parks. You can take tours of the bridge underneath or at the top to change a light. Not for me. That is a bread oven.
I had no idea Michigan was so pretty! Makes me want to take a trip there sometime. When is a better time (with decent weather) to visit? That's not so crowded. When is your "shoulder" season for good camping? We are empty nesters and retired...

Say rush when you get to the UP be sure to try out what they call a pasty they are very good very well known in the UP
I visited this fort many years ago, I was looking to see what had changed. I only got a brief tour from this video.
The people who are dressed in historic uniform are guides. If you ask them to give you a tour, or join a scheduled tour, you can make a much more informative video. This style of video is what I call "short attention span theater".
I often do searches for more details of some of the places Russ goes to that I am interested in.

You went to Mackinac City but not Mackinac Island? That's like going to the gates of Disney World only to turn back before entering the park. lol
The French spelling is Mackinac but it is pronounced Mackinaw. The French were the first white men in the area in 1634. They later founded a mission for the Native Americans on Mackinac Island in 1670. Also, the bridge is 5 miles long.

It is not pronounced Mackinak, it is Mackinaw, just like the city, and the island and the bridge! Mackinac is the French spelling.

it's a 13-lined ground squirrel . Native species .
@@kurtguelde9081 Thanks for the info, Kurt. The squirrels we have here back East (New York City-metropolitan area) all have nice, bushy tails, and they tend to hop more when on the ground rather than scamper the way that critter did.
