In the middle of a workday in London - you'll need to watch "Let it Be" to see the chaos this created on the streets below - fantastic movie covering this "concert". The masters of modern rock & roll music. . .

They were climbing up the other buildings to see them. Hanging out the windows. The Let it Be film showed too much of the crowd reaction. It completely disrupted the businesses in the area and the cops were called to shut it down. U2 got the idea from the Beatles and their video was considered a recreation.
If you had actually seen documentary, you would have been aware that there was a huge crowd that slowly gathered on the street below. It was a word-of-mouth deal because once it was noticed by individuals that happened to be in the area, the word spread and I mean it spread like wildfire. So yes, they did have an audience. And when you think about it, what happened here was something that never happened in their entire career and that was they were able to have a concert that anybody that saw it got to see it for free, which obviously didn't happen with real planned concerts. Wow seeing The Beatles for free that had to have been awesome.
They heard the music, but people on the street could not see them. The lucky ones were business people from the neighboring buildings that got on their rooftops.
The organ is being played by Billy Preston, who is sometimes called the 5th Beatle. He can be seen briefly in the video. Billy joined the group for some of their last recording sessions. He also had a solo career with a few hit songs.

@@mgonzales56 Yep. George had "quit" and when he returned he brought Billy with him. They considered making him a member but they had broken up about the same time.
The Beatles liked it so much because they were sort of back to where they started. Something to remember is none of the Beatles has turned 30 when this was filmed and before they broke up. They spent most of their 20's working 5 to 6 days a week in the studio and the touring and movies between 1964 and 1967. This was an engineers nightmare because they had to run cables to the studio four floors below to the recording equipment. As someone said this was fall or winter in London so the got the coats they could get.
Yes it was in January and has rain in the air, so they also had concerns about water and electricity not mixing. They had to borrow their girlfriend/wife's jackets as it was cold.
You guys need o check out the entire rooftop concert from Peter Jackson’s “Get Back” documentary. It’s about 45 minutes long though, so sit back and get ready.
I was so very fortunate to have been to a Beatles concert in 1965 at the Atlanta Stadium. My early favorites: LOVE ME DO, WE CAN WORK IT OUT, EIGHT DAYS A WEEK, DAY TR9IPPER, YESTERDAY, SOMETHING (George wrote and is lead vocalist), HERE COMES THE SUN and later favs are HEY JUDE, THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD, ACROSS THE UNIVERSE, LOVE, LOVE LOVE, WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS, GET BACK and DONT LET ME DOWN.. 1969 was a memorable year in my musical memory. The final "pubic" performance of The Beatles on the rooftop of Apple Music in London's West End, and seven months later, Woodstock - the first big counter-culture music festival.
Somebody correct me if I’m wrong but I think the original intention of the Let It Be project was to write the album and then play it at a big concert. Something went wrong with the concert so they just decided one day to play the album on the roof of the Abbey Road studios. It was shut down by the police when the crowd in the streets got too big.
3 Savile Row in London is not an extremely tall building, a few stories high. I walked past the building many years ago during a 'Beatles tour' of London. I was at street level of course, but it was interesting to see the entrance door where I've seen the guys walk in and out in various videos over the years.
I've Got a Feeling and Get Back are the other essential songs from this session. I've Got a Feeling is an especially awesome song and performance in my book. Paul shows off his pipes in a big way.
George was the first Beatle to have a #1 song after the split. John only had around 10 years after they split before he was killed. He had a very successful career in that short period. Even Ringo has had a very successful career after the split. Paul has sold more albums than any of them but they were all successful.
There was even an official Beatle best-of album release called Love Songs (1977). Love Songs is a compilation album by the Beatles that features love songs recorded between 1962 and 1970.
Whoever contributed the majority of the lyrics to a song was the primary singer of the song. In this case it was John. When they contributed equally, then both John and Paul would share in the vocals. The Rooftop performance was on the roof of Apple Records and it was THE LAST public performance in 1969. They would break up within a year after that. As a long time Beatles fan from the beginning, we knew there was friction and there was speculation they may break up. It was hard to watch. Thanks for the great reaction. 👏👏🥰🇨🇦
They hadn't played live for a couples of years or so, but they still had that sync and were a really tight band. That had been honed early on playing clubs and small venues for years before they got big. Paul, John and George had been playing together since their mid to late teens and Ringo joined them about three or four years after.
The original idea for what became the Let It Be album was to record a live performance of new material without much studio production at a some known world location before an audience which no one had done before. The impromptu Rooftop Concert was the closest they got to fulfilling that concept. Part of that idea was to return to their early original type of performance. Thoroughly enjoyable to just watch them. :)
I was 10 when The Beatles took over the world. Love their music, still listening to it. As far as their solo music went, I’ve loved all their post Beatles music up through John’s last album. Other than a few MTV hits in the 80’s, I haven’t listened to Paul. I love the early Beatles songs he wrote, but it was always John’s writing and voice that I gravitated to. George Harrison being up there with John. Ringo can’t be forgotten, either, still have his first solo albums too❤️❤️❤️
This was unannounced to the public, but absolutely the crowds down in the street began to form. I think it was only about a half hour or so before the police shut it down but yes, people were down below and in the get back video I believe you can see people coming out on their own rooftops and windows to watch!
They were documenting the recording sessions during month of January, 1969. They ran through basically all the tracks that would end up on Let It Be and Abbey Road. Plus, quite a few extra songs that didn't. They also performed dozens and dozens of other songs just to keep fresh and get new ideas. They talked about performing live quite a bit in various exotic locations but obviously ended up just playing on the roof. This wasn't announced. People were just walking about and going to work then suddenly looked up and saw The Beatles. They had stopped performing live in 1966 to concentrate on studio work. Paul and John would come into the studio with complete demos. Then, The others would add their parts and they would work it out. Ringo and George would come in with song fragments or just one line. By 1969, Paul would get more and frustrated trying to get across his ideas and what he wanted. George walked out of these sessions at one point. It was contentious.
In 2021, director Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) released a 3-part documentary titled Get Back, which is a very in-depth look at everything involved in the album ‘Let It Be’ and includes information from the relationships and personal lives of the Beatles. The third part has the complete Rooftop Concert, including film of the people on the street, the police and the crew that was filming the movie being made at the time. Jackson used state-of-the-art equipment to improve all footage made at the time, and mixed in a lot of footage that has been unavailable. Although each episode is over 2 hours, they all are mesmerizing and totally immersive.
The Beatles performed 5 songs on the rooftop that day. 2 of them have been shown over and over and basically it leads those that have seen them to believe they were the only 2 songs that were performed, but that is incorrect.
Well that's a blast. I remember that.... back when I was a good boy. PS: Video tape! That's so cute. It was shot on film and I can feel the back ache from here. 💓
To me this is a great timeless song. I always dug John's vocals. One of my favorite songs and performances by them. I believe they performed REVOLUTION here also. Great location, so cool!!!!
This was their last "public performance" (and they hadn't played live concert dates since 1966), but this was NOT their last album (LET IT BE). They still had the iconic ABBEY ROAD album in their brains which was their last album. The original documentary was LET IT BE, which was released on videotape and later laserdisc (which I've had for decades). That included most but not all of the ROOFTOP CONCERT. What you are now seeing is the result of the epic Peter Jackson project called THE GET BACK SESSIONS (originally the album was going to be called GET BACK). That result was a NINE HOUR BLU RAY SET OF REHEARSALS and the ENTIRE ROOF TOP CONCERT.
Billy was the 6th Rolling Stone too! I saw the Stones at the Cow Palace in South San Francisco July 1975 and Billy was on keyboards and Ronnie Wood had just left the Rod Stewart Band/Faces to join up with the Stones earlier that year for that 75 Stones Tour however he was still a member of the Faces but in spring 76 he left the Faces and was officially a member of the Stones.
The English invasion as well as American music had so much impact and effect on my life growing up then as a late teenager.. It taught relationships you didn’t seem to grow up in as a child of WW11 parents..eye opening, mind expanding experiences, thanks
Such a freaking banger as Phil would say. This is probably my favorite Beatles song. The documentary Get back on Disney is worth checking out. I've got a feeling from this performance if you haven't already done it. Great reaction and Peace out guys 🙏 ✌️ ☮️
Classic! Also I like Yoko! She is a peaceful artist, not a typical rich celebrity. And their son Sean seems cool. He collaborated with Les Claypool and countless others.
George wanted more songs on albums and was artistically frustrated. John was in love with Yoko and had drifted away from the band. Paul and Ringo wanted to continue. After recording Abbey Road, John announced to the band that he was leaving. The other three were stunned. They kept it a secret until Paul announced it six months later during the promotion of his first solo album, McCartney. The nail in the coffin of the band was when Paul had to sue the other three in order to stop their crooked manager Alan Klein from robbing them blind. The other three sided with Klein. Paul was proven to be right and saved all of them 100s of millions of dollars. John confirmed all of this in the interview he gave to Rolling Stone the day before he was murdered. I highly suggest you read it. 🕊️❤️🎼
It's film not video and it's totally live, on the top of Apple HQ, the head office of their record company in Saville row in London, January 1969. It wasn't an announced show it was a show to be at the end of their film Let it be that they were making this performance for. It was a normal working week day and the streets below became very crowded, on hearing the performance on the roof.
you must watch the documentary “Get Back” so you can see in real time Paul create from thin air the song Get Back. There is nothing more incredible than to see that moment.
Yes, many people in the streets below. Cops went to stop the concert. Many business owners started to complain about the crowds in the street. The people were there. They do show it in other rooftop songs and the Let It Be movie.
Thank you for the reaction ... listening to The Beatles never gets old. (thumbs up) Regarding the coats, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe John and Ringo are wearing their wive's coats, simply because it was cold outside and they didn't have their own coats with them at the time. George's coat might be his wife's too, but I'm not sure. Regarding Paul becoming the standout band member after the Beatles broke up, I strongly disagree. The only reason Paul stands out more than the others isn't totally because of better music than the others ... but more because John decided to take time off to raise his child (and then was murdered at the time he returned to making music again) ... and George passed away very young too. Ringo is still putting albums out today too. (I give Paul credit for having longevity and a great work ethic).
To me one of the more remarkable things about this performance is that they had stopped performing live about two or three years previously. Yet they go up there and start playing like they've been doing live shows all that time. Completely comfortable and in sync with each other. It's too bad it didn't last.
Some contend that Billy Preston was the 5th Beatle; however, that distinction goes to George Martin who was with the Beatles from the beginning guiding the Fab Four in the development of their songs. He played piano/keyboards on most of their early songs, and guided their compositions, whether a song should have a slower of faster temple as an example. George Martin is seen in many videos of the Beatles in studio.
This was their Apple corp. record company roof top. The Key board is played by Billy Preston. This concert went on for 45 min. and caused traffic jams and crowds were on the street . Roof tops on other buildings were full of people until the police shut the concert and filming down .Beatles had not preformed in public in years. After this they did not preform together again. Problems were Yoko ,Business, Music direction and they all had their own projects. George had lots of music of his own John wanted to go in another direction , Paul had his project and they all helped Ringo .They were a bunch of Brothers that grew up together. Married had kids and were going in different directions..
Hi there you too lovely people I want to say I'm enjoying this video as I'm a big Beatles fan I visited Liverpool I've been to men love Avenue if you ever come to England I would say that's the first maybe place to go menlove Avenue mendips is where John Lennon grew up with his aren't Mimi but what I want to say is another suggestion would be Paperback Writer that is one fantastic video music video I really dig that
Maybe check out their later stuff 'Free as a bird', 'real love'. and 'now and then' they were all put together from demos that John recorded in the late 70s, and labeled the casette 'for Paul'. Yoko gave the cassettes to Paul when the remaining Beatles were putting the anthology together in the mid 90. The last to be recorded was Now and Then which only released last year. It was originally dumped on by Harrison because the quality of the recording was too messy and the technology didn't exist yet to separate the vocals from the music to clean it up. Technology which Peter Jackson's company created to improve and separate sounds for the Get Back Documentary was used to separate sounds and clean up the vocals well enough to use. Paul and Ringo recorded new vocals and instrumentation for the song and mixed it with John's vocals and guitar bits which George had recorded the first time they tried to do the song. The final result was a beautiful song.
If you want a better perspective of the rooftop performance, check out the song, I've Got a Feeling. It has several different angles of the overall area and some street scene activity. Great song, too.
I wonder why some music/reaction channels don’t break but play song without interruption? There are 3 channels that I follow that never stop the song. Weird! 💙🇨🇦
This was filmed on top of their recording studio, the Abbey Road Studios. The police are there because they were very severely impacting traffic patterns, although they were not deliberately performing for people in the street. The police asked them to stop, but then were very patient as they did a few last songs. I've seen one of those policeman interviewed in his old age. The Beatles broke up because John announced that he was leaving. It's generally believed that Yoko Ono had been telling him that the others were holding him back. However, it should be remembered that the guys had been almost living together for almost a dozen years and were kind of sick of each other
Se nota la participación de Billy Preston., el quinto Beatles. Este grupo de prodigios, podían tener un Long play en 30 días, y las cías de disco lo sabían y presionaban tanto, por eso, fundaron su propia casa de disco, Apple. Maestros prodigios.
Great analysis for the most part! A few things a bit off, but I'm sure others in the comment section have made those corrections already. I just wanted to add that the Beatles are more than some legendary group from the past. The Beatles are very, very relevant today. In fact, to this very day, The Beatles are the biggest selling music artist of all time, and nobody else even comes close (do a quick google search of "who is the biggest selling music artist of all time" and you'll see what I'm talking about). This is why Beatles videos are taken down so often. Because the Beatles are the biggest that ever was! Bigger than Elvis or Michael Jackson, bigger than Dr. Dre or Drake, bigger than Rhianna or Madonna, bigger than Nirvana or Taylor Swift...bigger than any other music artist that ever breathed air and walked the face of this earth! A lot of people don't realize this very true fact, but it is reality. Looking forward to more Beatles reaction videos! Peace
It's January, it's cold, George, John and Ringo are wearing their wives coats. Ultimate professionals ... they had issues with each other but as soon as it was 'performance' they always gave their all and issues were set aside ... the music always came first.
It wasn't filmed for a documentary, that's underplaying it. They were either going to make a movie or a tv show. They also wanted to use live tracks on the album so they knew this performance might be on the album. Paul is also playing up for the cameras as they knew why they were filming it, it wasn't just them having fun. It was actually Paul's idea to create a live album of all new material. It is pretty well known, all the problems that broke up the band. People speculate about which cause was the most important, but all the various reasons have been gone over endlessly including by the Beatles themselves. They had issues about what kinds of songs to put on singles and albums, who should run the business, whether Yoko should always be around while recording, what project to do next and who should lead it, whether they should write songs that they personally liked or ones that would be big hits, and on and on and on. Paul was already a huge star at this point as they all were. To think that Paul became bigger after would be wrong. He was as big a star during this time as ever. As someone who grew up in the 80s, I can tell you that Paul McCartney was nowhere near that big in the 80s as he was in the 60s. Of course he toured and did things, but the rock 'n roll fans considered him very past tense. Other than the biggest McCartney fans, most rock fans believe his best music stopped in the early 70s and many feel his solo work in the 70s was very disappointing. For a person to really understand this, they would have had to have lived thru it. Do not believe things that you read today, the stuff written today is very, very revisionist. You must read things from the past to understand better. No one writing about music today is going to give you anything much close to the truth about that past. For all of them, their best solo work was the early 70s. Paul put out more than the rest for various reasons, but not everyone thinks his solo work is as good as you seem to think.
There was quite a gathering of people on the street below and one of the businessmen complained to the police regarding the noise. Thus you see Bobbies on the rooftop sent to shut down the performance.
There was a whole compilation album of the Beatles called 'Love Songs'. It was a two record set. Track list as follows: "Yesterday" "I'll Follow the Sun" "I Need You" (George Harrison) "Girl" "In My Life" "Words of Love" (Buddy Holly) "Here, There and Everywhere" "Something" (George Harrison) "And I Love Her" "If I Fell" "I'll Be Back" "Tell Me What You See" "Yes It Is" "Michelle" "It's Only Love" "You're Going to Lose That Girl" "Every Little Thing" "For No One" "She's Leaving Home" "The Long and Winding Road" "This Boy" "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)" "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" "I Will" "P.S. I Love You"
The fifth Beatle, Billy Preston, plays a large part in this video, on the keyboards. And... people in the buildings across the street started opening up and sitting in their windows. Crowds also started gathering in the streets and police were sent up to break up the concert, but ended up standing around and listening to the music; they must have sensed the history-in-the-making event unfolding. Besides, who wants to be the guy in the tabloid photos arresting the Beatles during their last public performance?
The Beatles & other artist of the 60’s could describe intimate moments tastefully. Unlike artist in later years & today that just blurt out graphic language. “Oh, she done me, she done me good”.
John (singing lead on this) is actually wearing Yoko's fur coat because of the cold. They were having a blast. A funny note is that only George did not want to go up on the roof. At one point they each go look over the edge at the crowds below and George takes a very quick peek ... I guess he was afraid of heights ... Not sure about that but it fits his reaction.
THANK YOU, my three favorite Beatles songs are Dear Prudence, Polythene Pam and this one... great video, y'all should check out the movie Across The Universe, done around Beatles songs.
have you done Paul's "Silly Love Songs" yet? As for being most successful, from what I can tell, John had a lot of hits. Not picking favorites, but I'd say his career was better than Paul's, only shorter (for obvious reasons). George had a few decent hits, but not as many, and Ringo a small number, but they were solid. You might need to listen to more of John's hits. U2 was consciously imitating the Beatles with their rooftop song. Intended as a tip of the hat to the legends, I think.
Why did the Beatles break up? Current thinking is that there were a lot of reasons, but one major factor was that Paul became a driven work-aholic, and John and George didn't really want to keep up (plus John used to be the leader, and didn't like that changing). I think a lot of the crap with Yoko was just her and John trying to rebel. There were lots of other events that you can blame, but for group dynamic this model is what makes the most sense.
One quibble I have with that is that Paul was always a driven workaholic. All the others maintain that they wouldn’t have been so productive without his prodding. Perhaps they wanted to back away from that pace.

Ringo can’t be forgotten, either, still have his first solo albums too❤️❤️❤️
Thank you. Such professionals!
Sometimes I watch this just because it moves me.
Billy Preston on the Hammond. He was in a place where he wasn't shown in the video, but boy you can hear him.
Love this performance. “Beyoncé of the group” was a great comment 😂😂😂
Paul is my favorite Beatle ❤
❤😊 Your description of the Beatles was perfect!
This was unannounced to the public, but absolutely the crowds down in the street began to form. I think it was only about a half hour or so before the police shut it down but yes, people were down below and in the get back video I believe you can see people coming out on their own rooftops and windows to watch!
That was the great late Billy Preston on keyboards....What a cool rooftop concert that was.
ICONIC !!!! ❤❤❤❤
They are chill because they know they are the greatest rock band of all time.
Im a Beatles fan from the 80s
Played Beatles Rock Band in the early 2000's with my daughter s
Now my grandkids wear The Beales shirts ... ❤🎶🎶🎶🎶
Billy Preston on keyboardss (The Fifth Beatle)
Billy was the 6th Rolling Stone too! I saw the Stones at the Cow Palace in South San Francisco July 1975 and Billy was on keyboards and Ronnie Wood had just left the Rod Stewart Band/Faces to join up with the Stones earlier that year for that 75 Stones Tour however he was still a member of the Faces but in spring 76 he left the Faces and was officially a member of the Stones.
The Beatles were unique and changed the music industry. Brilliant talent. I don't think any of them were as good on their own.
That's very cool that your father was in a band
+1 for watching the Get Back documentary - it runs for nearly 8 hours and every single minute of it is fascinating.
The English invasion as well as American music had so much impact and effect on my life growing up then as a late teenager..
It taught relationships you didn’t seem to grow up in as a child of WW11 parents..eye opening, mind expanding experiences, thanks
"The Beatles" matured the music.
Billy Preston on the keyboards made major contributions to this concert and the 'Abby Road' album.
This was the last time the Beatles ever played together!!!!
you must watch the documentary “Get Back” so you can see in real time Paul create from thin air the song Get Back. There is nothing more incredible than to see that moment.
……also John thought Paul was writing to many love songs “Silly Love Songs” 😂🤣😂
Nice reaction, thank you! Hope you can find more Beatles songs that won't get blocked. You might try She's Leaving Home or I Feel Fine.
This is greatness! John Mayer and Keith Urban do an amazing cover for a Beatles celebration.
Yes, many people in the streets below. Cops went to stop the concert. Many business owners started to complain about the crowds in the street. The people were there. They do show it in other rooftop songs and the Let It Be movie.
“I don’t wanna go up on the roof…” - George
Thank you for the reaction ... listening to The Beatles never gets old. (thumbs up)
Regarding the coats, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe John and Ringo are wearing their wive's coats, simply because it was cold outside and they didn't have their own coats with them at the time.
The rooftop is the building where they had their Apple Studio, equipment and headquarters.
Guys, if You haven't yet, check out from the same toproof concert I've Got a Feeling and Get Back 😁👍
If you want a better perspective of the rooftop performance, check out the song, I've Got a Feeling.
Track list as follows:
"Yesterday"
"I'll Follow the Sun"
"I Need You" (George Harrison)
"Girl"
"In My Life"
"Words of Love" (Buddy Holly)
"Here, There and Everywhere"
"Something" (George Harrison)
"And I Love Her"
"If I Fell"
"I'll Be Back"
"Tell Me What You See"
"Yes It Is"
"Michelle"
"It's Only Love"
"You're Going to Lose That Girl"
"Every Little Thing"
"For No One"
"She's Leaving Home"
"The Long and Winding Road"
"This Boy"
"Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)"
"You've Got to Hide Your Love Away"
"I Will"
"P.S. I Love You"
The fifth Beatle, Billy Preston, plays a large part in this video, on the keyboards. And... people in the buildings across the street started opening up and sitting in their windows. Crowds also started gathering in the streets and police were sent up to break up the concert, but ended up standing around and listening to the music; they must have sensed the history-in-the-making event unfolding. Besides, who wants to be the guy in the tabloid photos arresting the Beatles during their last public performance?
Pretty much anything from the Revolver album (hope TH-cam doesn't block this comment because of that word!) is solid.
The 2nd Paul is programed pretty well.
A comment understood only by us pensioners.
It was January 1969 in London and it was cold on the roof, so three of the four Beatles put on their wives' coats and jackets.
i loved this video so much! i watch it often!
The Beatles & other artist of the 60’s could describe intimate moments tastefully. Unlike artist in later years & today that just blurt out graphic language. “Oh, she done me, she done me good”.
I''ve this this performance over a dozen times by other reactors with no copyright issues.
My suggestion for doing reactions to music by The Beatles is to react to the audio tracks without looking at videos. Maybe that will help?
THANK YOU, my three favorite Beatles songs are Dear Prudence, Polythene Pam and this one... great video, y'all should check out the movie Across The Universe, done around Beatles songs.
Billy Preston was on the keyboards behind/next to Ringo.
Their Hamburg stints made them a band -- more time on stage than off.
There's the beatles and everyone else
This is my 10 yo grandsons favorite song.
Have a look at lv'e got a feeling from the same concert, lt's great!
have you done Paul's "Silly Love Songs" yet?
