They have so many great songs!! Add these too Goin Down, Papa's Gene's Blues, Saturday's Girl, Words, You Just May Be The One, Randy Scouse Git, A Little Bit Me A Little Bit You, What Am I Doing Hangin' Round, She, "Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)", The Girl I Knew Somewhere, Mary Mary, and of course The Monkees Theme Song.
He also wrote "Different Drum", recorded by a girl named Linda Ronstadt (with Stone Poneys), who went on to have some minor success ; ) as a solo artist.
The Monkees was a comedy show about 4 young men trying to succeed as a rock band. This is a clip from the show. The members were Davy Jones (red shirt), Michael Nesmith (with guitar), Mickey Dolenz (blue shirt) and Peter Tork (at piano). The show debuted in 1966 (when I was 6) and ran for two seasons, but had a long afterlife being rerun on Saturday mornings. As a little girl I was so in love with Davy Jones. Thanks for reacting because this brings back a lot of happy memories for me. 🥰
I was 6 at the time also. But I had a much older brother and sister. But my Bro was into the Stones. My sister the Beatles. So I had to sneak watching them or be made horrible fun of. LOL.
It wasn't Mickey Dolenz first TV hit. He was in an earlier TV series. Very young lead called "Circus Boy". As a kid back then, watching Circus Boy, it was a surprise to learn he could sing.
Same for me too. As a kid the first songs that I can remember was from reruns of The Monkees tv theme song, Batman theme song and from the radio was The Lion Sleeps Tonight.
I love The Monkees! Their show was a hit in the 60s. Winning an Emmy for best Sitcom. The Show became a hit again in the 70s when rerun on Saturday mornings. An a hit again when rerun in the 80s on MTV causing the band to get back together. One great thing about The Monkees they had 3 lead singers. When Davy Jones sang they sounded like an English band, when Micky Dolenz sang they sounded like a California band, when Mike Nesmith sang they sounded Country. Listen to a song lead by each member. Cool thing the band broke up in 1970 but Davy & Micky never stopped performing together. Their families were so close the kids called them Uncle Davy & Uncle Micky. Yes they were created because of The Beatles. But The Beatles loved The Monkees!! The Beatles held a party in their honor on their first trip to England. Micky said to John "I wish we could be as good as you guys". John replied "You guys are brilliant!" "Like The Marx Brothers!" The Monkees have like 20 great songs to listen to.
Around the 8:30 mark, you stated that "everybody was having a lot of fun; not a lot of worries happening in the world...". Actually, there was a lot going on in the US. The Civil Rights Act had just been passed, there were race riots, the Vietnam War was going strong, there had been (over several years) assassinations of JFK, Robert Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Kent State and so on. The country needed something light-hearted like The Monkees and groups like the Lovin' Spoonful, etc. to spread some joy in the midst of all the violence and chaos of the 60s.
Davy Jones WAS very young, only 19, when he started in the Monkees. Their music and show was a real milestone for several generations due to syndication. The songs were so good, the show so fun, and will always bring back the feeling of of coming home from school, of Saturday mornings, and falling in love for the first time.
Micky Dolenz (in blue shirt with tambourine) was always my favorite. He is the only one still living. Saw him in concert a couple of years ago and it was really good. His voice, at 77ish when I saw him, was as strong or stronger than it ever was. Told a lot of good stories about the other guys and their experience meeting the Beatles.
Absolutely correct and to be more specific, an hommage to the popularity of their movies like Hard Days Night....campy, fun and a place to include great tunes.
As a 6-year-old at the time, this TV show was my introduction to the hippie and surfing culture. I remember this show like yesterday. A great time to be alive.
I grew up in the 70’s & watched the reruns of this show. I remember Davy Jones, the singer guest stared on The Brady Bunch ! He came to the house, hang out with the fam before taking Marsha out on a date ! She was the President of his fan club. 😆
I loved him too, although I didn’t go as far as posters! Used to buy a lot of bubblegum because you got cards in each pack with pictures of the Monkees, and when you had enough you could put them all together and there was one big picture of the band on the back. Mind you, I was also in love with Beatle Paul McCartney and David McCallum (from The Man from U.N.C.L.E.). Ah, those were the days!
I had a chance to meet him at one of my area malls. I was there with my husband and had no idea he was doing a M&G there until we walked up on it. We got in line, but a few minutes later they said they weren't gonna let any more people go up. Obviously, we were late getting there. Not long after that, he died of a heart attack.
I am in tears right now. I was 14 and I loved the Monkees. I thought Davy Jones was just the end. Thank you for playing this because I'm almost 70 right now and it just brings me back and I'm in tears because of how happy it makes me feel.
Fun story: When Mike Nesmith went in for his audition, the casting agent asked him, "Show us happy." Mike stared at the camera. "Now show us angry." Mike stared at the camera. "But those are exactly the same!" Mike answered, "That's your hangup." He got the part. 🤣
Growing up here in the UK most of us had no idea what a homecoming queen was, but it didn't stop us loving The Monkees and watching them on tv. As big as The Beatles for a while, that's how popular they were
I used to watch the reruns of their show as a kid. They still show them. Some more Monkees songs: I'm A Believer, Last Train To Clarksville, Pleasant Valley Sunday, Steppin' Stone, The Monkees theme song
Davy was from Manchester Uk he was a child actor appearing in one of our UK soaps and on the West End stage as The Artful Dodger in Oliver and then did the same in New York where he was nominated for a Tony!!
I think the story goes that David Bowie, who's real name is Davey Jones, changed his name to David Bowie so he wouldn't be mixed up with this Davey Jones.
Yes. It started with The Beatles. They not only sparked the British Invasion, but influenced music, art, fashion, and culture everywhere. The Monkees tv show was put together tp emulate the fun spirit of The Beatles' movies, "A Hard Day's Night" and "Help". Once the fictional band was put together, they became a real band with lots of hits, and they fought for more control and creative input in their musical careers. All four members contributed singing, playing and songwriting. They were much beloved, and quite good!
Yep, & Neil Diamond was one that wrote several songs for them -- "I'm a Believer", "A Little Bit Me, a Little Bit You", and "Look Out, Here Comes Tomorrow"
I'm so in love with The Monkees. I got to see them live in 1999 and hung out with them in between sets. It was awesome and I'll never forget that. RIP Davy Jones, Mike Neizmeth and Peter Tork. Mickey Dolenz is the only one still alive.
Michael Nesmith (the one with the guitar) wrote Different Drum, which was a hit for Linda Ronstadt. He also had his own solo hit with the song Joanne. He had an interesting career post-Monkees with his The First National Band, and is considered the Godfather of what was to become MTV.
The Monkees were a pretty big group in the 1960s, and had a resurgence of popularity in the 1980s into the 90s thanks to their show being rerun in syndication on TV. They had several big hits, two that I suggest for future reactions that show some additional aspects to their sound are "Pleasant Valley Sunday" and "Last Train to Clarksville". As far as the looks and similarities to The Beatles, it was a little bit of both, others were definitely influenced by them and their success, but it was also the fashion and other styles of the time having an influence on them all as well.
Ao glad MTV reran the show in the 80s when I was little. I find it hard to believe there's anyone that hasn't heard a Monkees song. Especially this one. Maybe the Amish...
I’m 69, and back then you didn’t know how they were put together. I was 12 and learning the drums, watching Micky, and noticed he wasn’t even keeping the rhythm! I guess you can say, he learned on the job! It was a cornie show, but at a young age you don’t notice! Never missed an episode!
Some Monkees trivia. Davy Jones performed on the same episode of The Ed Sullivan Show, as The Beatles first appearance. Davy was part of the cast for the Broadway show of "Oliver" at that time. Would love you to react to Angelina Jordan again. She will debut NEW music, in concert, at the Alex Theater, in Glendale, California, on September 20th. In my nearly 66 years, Angelina has become my all time favorite vocalist, with her deep, sultry, rich, jazzy and soulful voice.
Davy was "the Artful Dodger" in the Broadway production of "OLIVER" and performed in a scene from the show "OLIVER" on the ED Sullivan Show, the same night that the BEATLES performed in the U.S. live on TV. Davy Jones said he was watching the BEATLES from the wings waiting for the "Oliver" cast to come on, and he was blown away by the Beatles. He said that then and there he decided that HE wanted to do what the Beatles were doing!
The short lead singer is Davy Jones, the only British member of the group. They were popular in the late 60's. The tall singer wearing glasses is Mike Nesmith, an accomplished musician, producer and writer. Peter Tork is the blonde member of the group, and Mickey Dolenz, the comical member, is the only surviving group member. They did public appearances and concerts along with their popular TV show. They were often featured in the teen idol fan magazines. "Tiger Beat," "16," "FAVE," were the top teen idol magazines at the time. Every pop group, solo artists, and young actors were featured on the cover pages of these publications, including The Beatles, Herman's Hermits, Donny Osmond, Jackson 5, The Turtles, David Cassidy, Bobby Sherman, The Beach Boys, Three Dog Night, Young Rascals, and more.
The Beatles started the long hair fashion that came to dominate music in the 60s. They came back from their second stint playing the strip bars in the Reeperbahn in Hamburg, Germany with those “pudding bowl” hairstyles and instantly started a trend. After 65, they started growing their hair even longer, basically setting the trend for the next couple of decades. The Beatles took their cue from Buddy Holly and the Crickets (whose music they loved) and became the Silver Beetles, later modified to the Beatles. All the other critter named bands were copying them. The Monkeys were a contrived band created as the stars of a kid oriented musical comedy series for television. The lead guitarist, Michael Nesmith was a singer songwriter with some success and a very competent guitar player. Davey Jones was a successful stage performer from Britain, Peter Tork was a multitalented musician (guitar, banjo, piano, etc.) who was friends with Stephen Stills and living in Greenwich Village, and Mickey Dolenz was a child actor in Hollywood (Circus Boy, 1956) and had to learn to play drums after the Monkeys series began. For the first year, all songs were performed with the Wrecking Crew providing the music and the boys singing.
The Monkees were the American answer to the Beatles. Davy Jones, the lead singer on this song, was British. The other three are Americans. Their TV show ran 2 seasons and they were huge on the charts for 2-3 years. There were more than 3-4 hits. They had 12 Top 40 hits but a lot more of their songs are known from being featured on the TV show. You should check out episodes of the show. For songs I’d do I’m A Believer, Pleasant Valley Sunday, Last Train to Clarksville, A Little Bit Me A Little Bit You, Vallerie
My favorite story of the Monkees is one Davy Jones told in an interview. He said he was watching the show with his daughters, and Daydream Believer was the song that came on. His daughter looked at him and said, you dance like Axl Rose from Guns and Roses. Davy said no, he stole my moves.
A long time ago, almost a lifetime ago it seems, I used to be able to dance like Davy Jones. Not anymore, with my disability, but I do dance in my seat. I could probably dance some with my walker, but gone are the days of moving as fluidly as Davy. Those were the days.
They were based on the Beatles' movie 'A Hard Days Night'. So, very much influenced by the Beatles. Meanwhile, the Beatles enjoyed the Monkees and even had them in the studio while they were recording, just hanging out. The overall mood at the time was anything but just happy and carefree, but the music was one of the places we could go to find some of that.
Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart wrote the majority of their songs,Neil Diamond wrote “I'm a Believer” and “A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You, but Michael Nesmith wrote many songs. This was our Saturday morning tv show that became huge . They were a silly group of boys living on the beach in CA who were in a band. They were hired as actors to play The Monkees ,but the music was so good….
They were marketed as a Beatles (like) group. The one in the white shirt, was Peter Tork. His brother, Eric Torkelson, was a runningback, who played for the Green Bay Packers! Torkelson, was the real family name. The one with the tambourine, Mickey Dolenz, starred in a 50's television program: "Circus Boy!"
The Beatles' name, aside from being a play on the Beat Music they helped pioneer, was inspired by Buddy Holly's group being called The Crickets. John Lennon and Stuart Sutcliffe apparently came up with The Silver Beetles in 1960 and the ball started rolling from there.
Lead singer: Davey Jones Key board: Peter Tork Tamarine: Mickey Dolenz Guitar: Mike Nesmith Every teenage heart throb in the 60's & 70' s was Davey Jones! Loved their television show!
The "5th Beatle" was from Manchester England-Davy Jones. the Beatles name came from Buddy Holly's band the Crickets-Monkees had tons of hits and even the ones that weren't hits, people know due to their tv show. Hits include-Last Train To Clarksville, A Little Bit Me A Little Bit You, the Girl I Knew Somewhere, I'm a Believer, I'M Not your Steppin Stone, Pleasant Valley Sunday, Words ,Goin' Down, Someday Man, Listen To the Band and The Porpoise Song. Other songs to check out-Look Out Here Comes Tomorrow, Sweet Young Thing, I Wanna Be Free, Papa Genes Blues, Randy Scouse Git, You Told Me, You Just May Be The One, Daily Nightly, Star Collector and so many more...
Thank you for this. The Monkees was a created band for a TV show that had the audacity to have talent and individual personality to carry themselves forward for several albums and at least two TV seasons and a film. The band was created in response to the British invasion of US airwaves and The Beatles in particular - Davy Jones, the lead singer in this song, was a Liverpuddlian.
Music from my teen years in the 60's, tried not to miss their show on TV, their music was exactly into the lives of the Flower Power, Free Thinking, and Hippy vibe.
Michael Nesmith, the guy with the guitar here, wrote some of the Monkees' songs and had several solo hits, Joanne, Silver Moon, Rio and Cruisin'. I'd recommend You Just May Be the One and What Am I Doing Hanging Around, a couple of his best songs he wrote in the Monkees. His solo hit Joanne is a masterpiece.
They were ridiculously popular and I believe they were more popular than The Beatles at one point. Every little girl was in love with Davy Jones and loved the guest spot he did on The "Brady Bunch." Micky Dolenz sings lead in the song, "I'm a Believer" and I love his voice, oh, and the song.
Here in America they were known as the Pre- Fab 4. They were a fictitious made up tv show band in 1966. I was 9 when the show hit tv, I loved it. My favorite bands were The Beatles, The Monkees and The Beach Boys when I was a kid. I got too see The Beatles live in Pittsburgh in September, 1964 for my 7th Birthday. Beatlemania was crazy. If you didn't experience it first hand at a show one really can't appreciation how crazy it really was. Everybody followed The Beatles, they started the British Invasion in America. If not for The Beatles, the history of recorded popular music would have played out quite differently. They were that important to popular music and pop culture. Freddie Mercury stated that in 1963 he was a 17 yr old being trained to be an opera singer and a classical pianist. Then in 63 he heard The Beatles "She Loves You" over his little radio and said that "At that moment, I knew that one day I would be in a rock and roll band". So there you go! Peace ❤❤
This real life family group that was the inspiration for "The Partridge Family" TV series,, The Cowsills "The Rain,, The Park & Other Things" (Aka: Flower Girl) ❤
The Monkees had a huge revival in the late 80s, fueled by the kids that had grown up on their show & music being in their early 20s in the 80s. I was in college for their comeback & it was so fun. They toured a lot & continued touring for many years. Only one is still alive, Mickey Dolenz (the drummer & vocalist on many of their songs).
Davy Jones (lead singer) had been a musical theater performer as a young teen. Fun fact, Davy Jones appeared as Dodger from Oliver! on the same Ed Sullivan show that featured the Beatles.
There is footage on youtube of the auditions/screen tests for the TV show. It had been whittled down to the last 8 and they were tasked with improvising scenes. People are chop and changed throughout as certain combos didn't gel. When these 4 were finally put together as a combo you can see the dynamic shift considerably.
They were nicknamed "The Pre-Fab Four" due to the nature of their formation. Initially they were not allowed to play their own instruments, but they fought long and hard and finally got to do it all themselves. Michael Nesmith, the guitarist, had a lengthy solo career and is considered to be the grandfather of MTV due to a video he produced for his single "Rio" in the mid-'70's. At the time "music videos" were called "pop clips". Nesmith is worth a check out for his unique style. "Rio" or "Cruisin'" would be good places to start.
I'm so sad they are all dead except for Mickey. It makes me feel really old. But you know I am almost 70 and I was in love with them when I was 14. That's a lot of years. They were amazing.
The Monkees started as a prime time show in the mid-60s aimed directly at teenage baby boomers. Then in the early 70s they put reruns of the show on after the Saturday morning cartoons which introduced the oldest Gen X crowd to them as kids. Then in the 80s the younger Gen X crowd got to see them on MTV. The Beatles were fans of the Crickets which influenced their name. Once the Beatles got going though pretty much everyone else including the Rolling Stones, their biggest rival, were just following whatever they were doing. The whole idea of the Monkees TV show came from the Beatles first movie "A Hard Day's Night".
For a bit of trivia. The guy using the tambourine, is Micky Dolenz who is the drummer in the group had previous tv notoriety; he played the role of Corky in the tv show from the 50's called Circus Boy, he went by the stage name of Mickey Braddock. Mike(Michael) Nesmith was an American musician and songwriter, as well as an actor; his mother, Bette Nesmith Graham, was a typist and commercial artist; she gained notoriety and wealth by inventing correction fluid Liquid Paper. Davy(David) Jones was an English actor and singer, Jones starred in Coronation Street; he played the role of Colin Lomax, the grandson of End Sharpels for one episode. Peter Tork(born Peter Halsten Torkelston) was an American musician and actor.
I’ve been a fan of the Monkees since I was 2 years old, I’m 59 now, and had every album they put out. They were supposed to be America’s answer to the Beatles, but didn’t work out as well. They did get their own TV show, used to watch it every day.
Actually, the Monkees music was very unique in the sense that if you were listening to the radio and they were playing their song, you would know it's them. Favorite songs are Steppin' Stone, Pleasant Valley Sunday, Words, The Girl I Knew Somewhere, Love Is Only Sleeping, Daily Nightly, and Circle Sky. There is a biopic about them called Daydream Believers, The Monkees Story. It is on Tubi for free.
I was so in love with Davy Jones ( the little short lead singer here from England) and was absolutely crushed when he got married! Ah, the joys of being a teenager back then... At any rate, I loved this group from when they started, all through their fame, and years beyond. Sadly, only Mickey Dolenz (curly hair and drummer) is still living. There was much more to their talent than they are given credit for, especially that of Mike Nesmith. He was a serious, serious musician and was quite embarrassed about his time as a Monkee, unfortunately. There was nothing to be embarrassed about because he brought joy, love, and wonderful music to his following! I hope you'll go down this rabbit hole. I don't think too many reactors have and there is quite a bit of excellent music to discover with them. Thanks! Big fan, by the way.
Before the Monkees, Davey was on Broadway in the musical "Olive"r for several years as the Artful Dodger. He was nominated for a Tony Award for the part.
You got it when you mentioned the Beatles. This show was connected to the Beatles as a sort of spoof project. A little more to it than that, but just pointing out that there is a definite and intentional connection. Nice catch! 👍 I was a huge Monkees fan. The first album I ever got was one of the Monkees from a yard sale. It cost me 25 cents which was a lot of money for a young farm kid from the midwest at the time. I still have that album (probably worth a lot more now that retro is getting more popular...lol). While they had a lot of big hits on the radio, probably one of my favorites by them musically is Shades of Grey - a more serious but very beautiful song.
The Beatles were the start of the '60's pop culture. The Monkees were corporate media cashing in on the phenomena. Having said that, The Monkees were a hoot and the music was some of the best pop of the '60's. They had the best songwriters and studio musicians the network could buy. The boys chafed at not being able to play their own instruments on their records but the suits owned them. Mike Nesbit put out his own music after the The Momkees ended and had a small bit of success. Davey Jones had a poster on the wall of most 12 year old girls in the country and they were staples on the cover of Tiger Beat magazine.
I love the Monkees so much. I was OBSESSED with the show when I was little, (Nick at Night in the 90s), and their greatest hits was the first CD I bought with my allowance. Micky is totally the best.
Steven Stills and Peter Tork were roomstes in NYC, trying to make it in the music biz , when the Auditions for the TV show were announced. Stills auditioned first but was considered to old for the image, but he recommended Peter Tork audition, and he got the part.
Davy Jones, the lead singer, was from Manchester and acted in several British tv series and on the West End before moving to the US when he was 19 yrs of age.
He was nominated for a Tony award while playing in 'Oliver' before he became a Monkee. He appeared with the cast from 'Oliver' on the Ed Sullivan show the same night the Beatles appeared.
Loved most of their songs... but my absolute, never to be replaced, all time favorite of theirs is Daily Nightly. One of the first times a Moog Synthesizer was used.... and the lyrics... wow. Written by Mike Nesmith (known as "Wool Hat" in the pilot for the show lol)
It was the 60s I was about 3 or 4 and I had dance on Saturday Mornings When I came home from class my brother and sister and my cousins would be watching The monkeys on Sat morning tv.. that’s my memory of them.. it was a fun hip show with their music intertwined in it.. another good song is Girl look what u done to me.. by Davy Jones solo career.. you should check that one out ♥️
Great Reaction Sam and Phil I was actually a big Monkee’s fan at the time and was not a Beatles fan! The Monkee’s TV Show was a key factor! Now on Sunday Mornings we had King Kong and Beatles cartoons and those Beatles I liked! Nonetheless my favorite Monkee’s song was Last Train To Clarksville! Which Micky Dolenz does the lead vocals! He’s the guy with the tambourine! Michael Nesmith did not like this song said it was crap but it ended up being the Monkee’s number #1 Hit! Davy Jones was the guy singing Daydream Believer would also be the Heartthrob of the group and made a cameo on The Brady Bunch TV Show! 🎸🤘🙏🏻
They were crazy , kooky type performers but the music was so good . "Last train to Clarksville" was one i really remember the most. So many great songs by these guys. keep diving into the rabbit hole. Love your channel :)
Our zoo in Pennsylvania had an associate photographer we used for our promotional material. His next door neighbor for more than 20 years at that point, was Davey Jones. There were some awesome backyard BBQ parties and dinner parties over the years.

Great list of classics..By the way,, It's just "Steppin' Stone"..Not trying to be a wise guy,, Just thought you might want to know.
I would say that those of us who grew up with the Monkees and bought their record albums like all their songs!!
@@happymethehappyone8300 Thanks!
It was their less popular tunes that were the best. The Headquarters album was my favorite.

Michael Nesmith on guitar is an incredible guitarist. As a side note, his mom invented whiteout.
He was also a pioneer in producing music videos.

Lots of drug overdoses too.
Don't forget the Cold War and the prospect of nuclear war.
But as far as the music was concerned, there was no other mandate except to have fun.
I came to the comments looking for this. 💙
the Monkees danced along the line between rock and bubblegum and did a great job.
That's a great way to put it. At 71 I find I appreciate them more as time goes by. Good music.
Crazy that they were releasing music in the midst of the likes of the Beatles, Johnny Cash, and Elvis yet these songs still hold up.
Another lifelong Monkees fan! We were so lucky growing up to have children's shows with musicians as cast.
And these guys were super talented!
Agreed,, Even "Lancelot Link Secret Chimp" had their own band "The Evolution Revolution" 🐵
So glad I'm not growing up today.

Yep. The kind of ripoff that rarely works. But I think this one did because they actually did make some great music in the process.
I was so in love as a 11 year old with Davey Jones. Posters in my room. Memories ❤
Sleepy Jean ... is that you?
@@denismansfield8876 I thought so when I was young 🤣
Oh I loved The Monkees! Such fun songs!
"But those are exactly the same!" Mike answered, "That's your hangup."
He got the part. 🤣
Loved his humor!
I love that.
He was a gem❤
Growing up here in the UK most of us had no idea what a homecoming queen was, but it didn't stop us loving The Monkees and watching them on tv.
As big as The Beatles for a while, that's how popular they were
Just a great pop tune
You are absolutely correct,, 100% true story.
Wow!
They had the best song writer's of that time writing their song's and the Wrecking Crew playing the instruments.
Only on the first few records then they demanded to play their instruments and write songs .. that’s why they went on tour to prove the could play
Yep, & Neil Diamond was one that wrote several songs for them -- "I'm a Believer", "A Little Bit Me, a Little Bit You", and "Look Out, Here Comes Tomorrow"
Nilsson also wrote songs for them😊
I loved their TV show back in the 60s growing up!
I love this group, and I love this song. Davy Jones, an Icon. So many memories. What a glorious time to be alive it was.
Those are great Micky lead songs. They just heard Davy lead. I want them to hear one lead by Mike as well.
They came from California, Texas, Connecticut, and England. Chosen from a very competitive audition for a TV show in 1966.
The "First Boy Bands" to hit the scene,,,
Their TV Show was really something to see.
The Monkees were so charming. Love them still.
70yrs old my favorite band!!!
Lead singer: Davey Jones
Key board: Peter Tork
Tamarine: Mickey Dolenz
Guitar: Mike Nesmith
Every teenage heart throb in the 60's & 70' s was Davey Jones! Loved their television show!
I liked Mike...
There is no E in Micky!
@@GirlWithAnOpinion sorry to the spelling police 🙄
They really had 3 lead singer Davy, Micky and Mike. Whichever one lead the song gave them a different feel, English, California, Country.
I grew up on reruns of the show. It's still funny today.
Saw The Monkees live in Winnipeg in 1967. Geez I feel old. Couldn't hear much over the screaming, but I do remember it was a show.
Peace ❤❤
Grew up on The Monkees they were huge for a few years I was in grammar school when this came out.. Great reaction.
Stepping Stone
Hands down most rad Monkess track. Punk bands even covet it!!
Davy Jones was a teen idol for many of us in our younger days!
This real life family group that was the inspiration for "The Partridge Family" TV series,, The Cowsills "The Rain,, The Park & Other Things" (Aka: Flower Girl) ❤
Yo. These cats had some major chart toppers. They will always be loved. They are sort of like comfort food😊
They had a comeback in the 80's because MTV had a marathon of their show.
I always think of a U2 concert I went to with Edge leading a karaoke thing in a large stadium with this song in the early 90's- way fun.
I saw them in concert after the death of Davy Jones. They played this song and the audience sang, in tribute to Davy. ❤
This song was written by John Stewart of the Kingston Trio.
I'm so sad they are all dead except for Mickey. It makes me feel really old. But you know I am almost 70 and I was in love with them when I was 14. That's a lot of years. They were amazing.
All us girls were in love with Davey Jones!❤
You left out the biggest thing Davy did before the Monkees starring first in London then on Broadway in Oliver. He got a Tony nomination for it.
At one point The Monkees was the number 1 show in America, as well as The Monkees having the number 1 song in America.
Don't forget The Animals.
You got it when you mentioned the Beatles. This show was connected to the Beatles as a sort of spoof project. A little more to it than that, but just pointing out that there is a definite and intentional connection. Nice catch! 👍
I was a huge Monkees fan.
I am 60 now and it's still my favourite song off all time. Makes you feel good.
Fun fact: the actor who played Mr. Chekov on Star Trek was cast in the role due in part to his resemblance to Davy Jones.
Steven Stills and Peter Tork were roomstes in NYC, trying to make it in the music biz , when the Auditions for the TV show were announced. Stills auditioned first but was considered to old for the image, but he recommended Peter Tork audition, and he got the part.
Last Train to Clarksville, Mary Mary and so many other Hits from these guys!
The singer, Davy Jones, was British. They were a put together group for television but had great success.
Davy Jones started out as a Jockey, and also a child actor. Pleasant Valley Sunday, is one of my favorites. Great review!!
@@laurellane1721 the same night as the beatles - wow!
He was also a licensed horse jockey.
He moved to the US when he was 16 to star in Oliver.
Michael Nesmith recorded one of my favorite songs in those days called Joanne. I would love to hear it 😊. I am 72. 😜 Seems like yesterday (almost).
I watched the Monkees every Saturday. I was 11 & loved them.😂😂 Of course I loved The Beatles since I was 5.
Pure 60s pop song.
It was the 60s
I was about 3 or 4 and I had dance on Saturday Mornings
When I came home from class my brother and sister and my cousins would be watching The monkeys on Sat morning tv.. that’s my memory of them.. it was a fun hip show with their music intertwined in it..
another good song is Girl look what u done to me.. by Davy Jones solo career..
you should check that one out ♥️
The beatles led all this. The firstt time you had video other than just the band singing. The hair. the looks, the fun.
Great Reaction Sam and Phil
I was actually a big Monkee’s fan at the time and was not a Beatles fan!
Love the monkeys! Mike is my favorite singer. They were before my time, but I've seen every episode of their tv show on repeats in the 80s. ❤
I saw them in grand haven, michigan in the 80's (also grass roots and the turtles). What music! Loved growing up with them.
Our zoo in Pennsylvania had an associate photographer we used for our promotional material. His next door neighbor for more than 20 years at that point, was Davey Jones. There were some awesome backyard BBQ parties and dinner parties over the years.
