The fourth member was George Harrison. Whilst Lennon and McCartney were the main songwriters, you should pay equal attention to George's songs, which I always felt had a magical quality to them.

Kids, this isn't a depiction of the Beatles roof top concert. This is the concert. Nobody is acting. These are the real people making the music. John Lennon was not portrayed by an actor who took off the 'mutton chop' sideburns, that is John Lennon. You talked about this as like it a scene from a movie, this is actual footage of the final days of the Beatles. They barely got all the songs finished and they were out the doors of Apple Records never to be a group again. I think Ringo played for George Harrison's 'Concert For Bangladesh' in 1971. I don't have to 'steer' you to any of their music, whatever you play will be a wonderful musical experience.

@@jk4675 1959-64 was the worse time in music since Rock and Roll started. Elvis went in the Army, Jerry Lee Lewis lost favor by marrying his 13-year-old cousin. Chuck Berry went to jail for transporting an underage girl across state lines. Buddy Holly dies in a plane crash. Record companies were only releasing music by white pretty boys, recording 'safe' songs that parents didn't mind their kids listening to. There was a folk/beat movement that wasn't really gaining speed. Stax and Motown were the only real thing happening in music and the Beatles were picking up on that.
Everything was ripe for the Beatles and they led the music scene from '64 - '69. Sure, there were a lot of great bands out picking up and pushing forward what the Beatles were doing.
Edit: Oops. I forgot about the Beach Boys. 1961 - 1966, pretty rockin' stuff, albeit a nick from Chuck Berry here and there.
That smile between John and Paul is so special, because despite all the tension and arguing and anger that came between them, they knew that when they were making music together, they were creating something magical. They’re weren’t the greatest songwriting partnership for nothing.
The smiles were because John forgot the lyrics and mumbled a couple of lines. This is actually a mixture of the two takes on the rooftop.
This was 30 January 1969, when the Beatles performed a concert from the rooftop of their Apple Corps headquarters at 3 Savile Row, in central London's office and fashion district. Joined by guest keyboardist Billy Preston, the band played a 42-minute set before the Metropolitan Police arrived and ordered them to reduce the volume. It was the final public performance of their career. They performed nine takes of five new songs as crowds of onlookers, many on lunch breaks, congregated in the streets and on the rooftops of nearby buildings to listen. The concert ended with "Get Back", and John Lennon joking, "I'd like to say thank you on behalf of the group and ourselves, and I hope we've passed the audition."

The fact that they only recorded Don’t let me Down 2 days prior to the rooftop performance is crazy! Also I heard that this performance was meant to be apart of their tv documentary but instead it turned into a feature film, which just shows how the music becoming more like a business rather than a passion really drove them apart (along with that witch Yoko).

The Beatles were the greatest and most influential band musically and culturally the world over. Beyond iconic, you have a lot of catching up to do, and be prepared for a treat you never knew you were missing in your lives! And no, not even a hint of being hyperbolic here! It's the truth!
I was born in '57, so I grew up with them. I highly recommend going from beginning to end with them, because you can see their growth...Their music is unmatched, but their entire story is what makes them so compelling. WAY too much to go into here, but understand , they were together for only 10 years. Their meteoric rise really took off when they landed on US soil in '64. They officially broke up 4/10/70 (my 13th birthday, coincidentally)..In those 6 years they put out 13 albums, wrote around 200 songs, many #1 hits, far more top 40's, bunch of movies..You get the picture..I can go on, but you need to experience them on your own..After the Beatles, dig deep into the Stones, too. In terms of impact, at that time, they were slightly behind the Beatles...It's what the Beatles caused to happen next that really underlined why they had such an impact, and why there can never, ever be another like them! No possible way!..Enjoy the ride!

I was fortunate to have seen the Beatles live at the Cavern Club in Liverpool in 1962, just prior to the conquering the world with their iconic music! I was a young Cadet Officer in the Merchant Navy, I was introduced to the Cavern Club by a Liverpudlian shipmate.Wonderful memories for me!

All I can remember is later hearing ‘Love me do’ being played on jukeboxes in many of the dives us sailors visited! After leaving Liverpool we sailed to USA, which was also very memorable for 2 reasons, firstly we sailed into a Hurricane which, apart from being seasick🤢🤢, it was also very scary! The 2nd memory was being caught up in the Cuban missile crisis and being buzzed and shadowed by the US Navy and USAF. After calling at various US ports we went through the Panama Canal and on to Australia. The Beatles music followed us everywhere 😀🎸🎷🎵 Sorry I can’t help with your question!
Beatles deep dive. Excellent choice. People will tell you they’re the best, the biggest, a phenomenon, changed the world. All true but the best is that they were 4 working class lads in their 20s that wrote literally scores of some of the greatest songs ever written, and most classic albums one after the other, all in less than a decade before they split. The chord progressions, melody, lyrics, experimentation, humour and style is enduring.
The Beatles hit the world with such an Incredible force it changed music forever, and it wasn’t just music, but style, humor, politics, transparency on and on. It was like the planets aligned with Liverpools Fab Four!!!

The 4th Beatle you did not recognise is George Harrison, lead guitar, he also wrote and sang a few songs, some of which are really good, but Lennon and McCartney wrote and sang the vast majority of the songs.
The Beatles are probably the most influential band ever and they changed the whole popular music genre.
“Some of which are really good”. I don’t think I’ve ever read an understatement of this scale before in describing the music of George Harrison.
The hype is earned.
You started at the end! This was their final ever live performance before it all came to end. A sad day but then a whole new chapter of solo careers. Give George some extra time!

They went from the famous black and white mop tops to this in just over 6 years. It’s magical how much they changed the world in a short amount of time.
And broke up, leaving a legendary catalog and influence, before any of the four had turned 30.
1969 and much to the bewilderment of younger people today, they were really singing, not miming to prerecorded tracks. Ok, cleaned up in post production, but back when live meant live.
The Beatles might not be my favourite band but they are the best band ever by a huge margin. As you go through their crazy amount of hits you'll find an incredible amount of diversity and very strong melodies. All their songs have personalities that are unique to themselves.
And all done in around seven years. A remarkable body of work, in a short time.

The people standing watching are literally office workers from the next building over. They hadn't played a live concert in over 2 years, and no one knew this was going to happen. They just set up on the roof of their studio and started playing their new album. The police are there because it basically stopped traffic in the middle of London.
As someone who lived through and was brought up with the Beatles, they were definitely the Benchmark. They may not have been everyone's favourite band, but they were certainly the most influential band to ever live. Every time a new Beatles album was about to be released, it was a Big deal. Every time a new Beatles album came out, music trends and styles would change in an attempt to keep up, especially from Rubber Soul onwards. They may not have always been the very best band musically, but generally the first when it came to different ways of composing songs and melodies. Their influence helped so many other musicians think of different ways to construct music outside the box every time they dropped a new album. Their music style evolved more than any other band and shaped the rock and roll era and what was to follow.

This concert was on top of the building where their Apple Studios was located in London. The Beatles had stopped performing live a while before, but this was their way of saying Farwell to all the fans. The police were there because businesses were complaining about the noise and the crowds in the street.
For me, and many of my fellow boomers, our dive down the Beatles rabbit hole began February 9, 1964 when they appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show. There you’ll find the B&W look. Imagine how there hair in ‘64 was considered long back then. This video was of the last time the 4 played together in front of an audience. This was the last live gig they did together. My old man worked for the RSPCA in Islington and was on the roof next to this trying to rescue an injured bird. There is a black and white film from the other side of the road with my dad being completely oblivious to how epic this was.
Many years ago when I was a young man, my music Teacher once told me that no matter how great a band maybe either now or in the future, The Beatles will always be greater. He was right.
"Rubber Soul", "Revolver", The White Album", "Abbey Road", "Let it Be" and of course, "Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band". Those albums sound as good in 2024 as they did in the 1960's.
Listen to any Beatles song from those albums and compare it with the bland repetitive guff that is churned out today. No comparison.
My Mum and Dad new how to wind me up. They would recall the days when Dad went into town to meet Mum on her lunch break and they would call into The Cavern Club to see a popular beat combo called The Beatles playing a lunch time set. What I would have given to see that!
So, enjoy your venture into the back catalogue of the greatest band ever. If you want a couple of ideas to start: Paperback Writer; Penny Lane / Strawberry Fields Forever, Hey Jude, Get Back, Back in The USSR. I could go on and on and .............
Ringo has released 18 albums since the break up and still tours as Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band. Zax, his son is the present The Who drummer.

There are so many hits and famous songs. They changed music. They were the most popular band in the UK then went to the U.S and became the No1 band there. This started the British invasion of 1960s where British bands became the most popular in the States. It changed American music which had hit a bit of a dead end. After they had done the poppy type early hits they started experimenting and literally changed the world of music, leading to things like psychedelic music etc.
John, Paul, George, and Ringo: they were the only rock band in history that [most] people immediately recognize whenever someone speaks their first names. And yes, their looks, their music, and their fashion changed dramatically in the 7-1/2 yrs they spent making music together. It's hard to believe the shear amount and the quality of music they created in such a short time span.
If you want to get a better perspective of the rooftop performance, I recommend you react to their song I've Got a Feeling. In that video, there are various camera angles that show the entire building as well as some of the street activity below. Many bands have since performed on rooftops as an homage to The Beatles. You may recall there is an episode of The Simpsons featuring George (Harrison) as the guest star. While Homer and his band play a concert on the roof of Moe's Tavern, a limo stops in front of the bar and George pokes his head out of the window to check out the music and says, "Ah, it's been done."
Just when you think you know what the Beatles are all about they come up with a song totally different from what they did before! Love them forever and thanks for showing! Can we have some more!!

You lucky people being able to hear the Beatles for the first time
You need to start at the beginning and play everything chronologically to get the true scope and appreciation of the genius of The Beatles. Early on they did a combination of covers and original material, but even most of the covers are fantastic. There are only maybe 5 - 10 songs in their entire catalog that I don’t love, or don’t like as much for one reason or another. I adore every stage of their journey from the perfect pop songs at their start through psychedelia to the sublime and sorrowful end. Three genius singer/songwriters, 4 top tier musicians in one group that made magic together and every single one had a successful career afterwards on their own. Ringo Starr is finally getting his due as the perfect drummer that always served the song and it’s a wonderful thing to see for his fans. Paul McCartney can play multiple instruments, has an amazing voice and his songwriting ability is considered to be at the very top. John Lennon and George Harrison are right there with him, and of course all three have fans that will insist that their favorite of the three is the best. What is amazing to me is each one would have been, and were, stars on their own, but when they play and harmonize together there is a chemistry that is undeniable. There were no Beatles before The Beatles and though there were many many wonderful acts during the Renaissance of popular music from the 1940’s through the early 1990’s, none were as successful as The Beatles. They influenced almost everyone that came after them, and they literally created many of the musical genres that exist today. At the same time their music is always accessible with strong melody, harmony and lyrics. They make it seem easy and simple, but this kind of magic is incredibly rare.
Most people dont appreciate that the Beatles were singing this LIVE and without ''Auto-tune''..
I challenge modern singers to do live performances without Auto-tune and pre-recorded backing tracks..
3 of The Beatles were wearing coats given to them by the woman in their life because they were cold singing out on the roof. That wasn't a fashion statement. They were trying to keep warm while playing on a cold roof in England.

The Beatles what does one say about the Beatles that hasn’t already been said by their music. You will discover that they had different looks and different sounds over the years. No song sounds like another, no look is quite like the other progression. That is why, among many other things, they are legends and will always be legends. Oh you two have so much great music to discover by them. OMG, we had to wait for each new album to come out, you do not it is all there for you to discover. Lucky you! The Beatles evolved very quickly. Example: In one calendar year (Aug, 1965-Aug, 1966) they released 3 albums, Help, Rubber Soul, and Revolver. Not only is that fast, but their style changed from mostly love songs to topics like loneliness, death, spirituality, and taxes. How fast is Taylor Swift evolving?

It's funny you saying their early haircuts were "clean cut". In the US they got a lot of flak for their "long hair" when they first arrived in 1964. At a presser after arriving a reporter actually asked Ringo if he planned on getting a hair cut while in the US. His answer was - why, I got it cut the day before leaving England.
Btw, their first single was released late 1962, and their album was recorded in February 1963 while their last in 1969. Although the Let It Be album wasn't released until spring 1970. In just 7 years they recorded 12 studio album (one a double album) with 188 original songs. An insane pace of writing and recording. Something that made them stand out from other bands was all four took lead singing on songs and three of the four were songwriters.

John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. George died in 2001, he has a son, Dhani, who looks exactly like him, in fact, Dhani played on stage with the Paul and many other musicians who were friends with George, in a tribute, Concert for George.

You can see him in his video for about 5 seconds. He's at the keyboard but you might not notice. You can't see the keys. He's behind Paul.
I was a teen when The Beatles exploded into the American scene. Ever since, they have been my favorite band. This rooftop concert was kind of special for me cuz it was on my birthday. The Beatles idols were Buddy Holly and the Crickets. A country Western band from Texas that switched to rock and roll after opening for Elvis. The day the music died was when Bubby died in a plane crash with two other artists. They named them selfs Beatles in respect. Buddy set up the drummer, bass, rhythm guitar, lead guitar still used today. Good luck on this bunny burrow. So much in so little time. Thanks and good day you two.
Whenever I watch The Beatles live, one of the things that stands out is just how excellent of a drummer Ringo really is. The man never missed a beat in his life.

This is a hell of a place to start listening to the Beatles. This was the last time they ever played together in public before they split up.
I remember watching this live as it happened it was on the news and the police tried to stop it because they stopped all the traffic in the streets below and all the office workers opened their windows to listen. but the Police enjoyed it too.
Obviously known for writing, many diverse and great tunes, but it really is the harmonies that blows everybody away every time
...Best way to get their progression is from about 1962 up to this era of 69 70 and their solo years are great as well
Mike, Jess: You'll be encouraged to watch The Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. A VERY famous broadcast, especially for Americans. BUT I would advise you to first watch The Royal Variety Performance 1963 which happened a few months earlier. They were already HUGE in the UK and this performance was their first major accolade by the UK show business establishment. Next step, conquer the USA.
I have the Beatles catalogue, it was printed just for their Royal Variety Performance. I was lucky enough to see them perform at the Lewisham Odeon. To me the sixties was the best decade. Happy days.

The really nice 'instrumental' bits you liked in the middle was an American called Billy Preston on the piano. For me, his piano playing made this song.
If you watch them sing I've got a feeling from the same concert you will see how high the building is.
For sheer genius, you need look (hear!) no further than "A Day in the Life" where John Lennon weaves lyrics about pot holes and the death of an acquaintance and in the middle Paul McCartney has his go with getting up and realising he's late for work. The change of tune, tempo, atmosphere and the final long piano chord; the Beatles getting an otherwise stuffy orchestra to dress up with funny noses and do things they'd never done before... It is quite, quite extraordinary.
Then watch Jeff Beck play "A day in the life" live at Crossroads. He takes it to another level.

They also have several different "modes" or phases in their career. 1962-1965 were their "Beatlemania" years; tons of short, perfect-Pop/Rock songs and lots of great covers of American Rock songs (like Chuck Berry songs, for instance). Then, as 1965 was coming to a close, they started to really focus on song-writing, in a Folk Rock and contemporary Rock styles (check out the album "Rubber Soul"). Then, in 1966, they started breaking new ground with a darker, more intense, psychedelic sound, with the "Revolver" album (amazing album). Then, in 1967, they quit touring as a live act and used the studio environment to create new music --- check out the Psychedelic/Orchestral Pop of "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and "Magical Mystery Tour" albums! Just all time classics. After that, from 1968 to 1970, they became the greatest "Classic Rock" version of themselves. They stripped down the production to get back to a more guitar-oriented approach and got back to their roots with albums "The White Album", "Let it Be", and "Abbey Road". Everything The Beatles did was amazing (with few exceptions) so you are going to fall in love with these guys, I promise!
This performance was done on a last minute Lark that I believe Paul had the idea. They assembled on the rooftop of their recording studio. It was great while it lasted, but they were ultimately forced to stop by the local police. But even they 1st stopped and listened to them for a while, so at least more of The Beatles were able to be played before they were actually shut down. And then on top of all of that, this turned out to be their very last ever live performance together!

It is sad to accept that in just 8 months after this rooftop performance (JAN 30, 1969) The BEATLES, the Greatest Band the world will ever know, broke up. After 7 years, 11 Studio Albums, Two EP length Soundtracks and 22 British singles, the four Beatles would never be in the same room together again. The "What if's" are almost unbearable to ponder. The guitarist/vocalist on the right is George Harrison, sadly departed in 2001. The guy on the electric piano was American guest musician Billy Preston ( behind to the left of McCartney). This impromptu gig, and their last, was on the rooftop of their company called Apple, 3 Savile Row, in Mayfair, Central London Jan 30th 1969. John Lennon is wearing his partner Yoko Ono's furry coat and Ringo Starr is wearing his wife Maureen's red plastic coat as was a bit cold. They had been filmed for the previous 4 weeks rehearsing and composing new songs in both Twickenham Studios, West London and then in the basement studio of this building shown. The resultant film was called 'Let It Be' (the same title as their last released album and no. 1 song). This film was restored and re-released back in May on Disney plus streaming. In 2021 a longer 3-part 6 hour version called 'Get Back' (also a no. 1 song) was also released on Disney streaming and on Blu-Ray . The producer of both was Peter Jackson of Lord Of the Rings movie fame. The Beatles officially split up in 1970.

The Beatles were together from 1963 to 1970. This was their last performance ever. They just dissolved the Band in their manager's office a few minutes before this impromptu Rooftop concert in London. It was completely spur of the moment, and crowds began to gather ten stories below on the streets of London, as people were looking around, to see where the music was coming from. Soon, everyone looked up and saw where it was coming from. People in nearby buildings were opening their windows to hear the Beatles Farewell concert. I still can't believe they were only together for 7 years after recording their first hit song, "I Saw Her Standing There" in 1963, and their ending with "The White Album" in 1970. They've sold more records than any other artist or Band in history, and it's still the case today. The Band that changed Rock and Roll forever.
"Love Me Do" was released in late 1962. "The White Album" was from 1968 and the last studio album released was "Let It Be" in 1970, though the last recorded album was "Abbey Road", in 1969.
They recorded the Abbey Road album after this. Most of everything else you said is incorrect also.

I know all these bands from the 60's 70's, 80's because my mum loved music and always had music playing all the time for sure. I also love hard rock and heavy metal but I appreciate all music for sure

All You Need Is Love is great. Its was broadcast live for a world wide audience and has a bunch of other celebrities there singing along with them...pretty cool
I watched this live. It was the first time that TV could be transmitted around the world and seen live in different countries at the same time. The Beatles were chosen to represent the UK. Two years later, man landed on the moon and that was shown live on TV. When I saw this live, I said it was fake as I didn't believe they had the technology in camera equipment to broadcast that distance. 55 years later and they are still trying to get to the moon.

The Beatles are the greatest band ever. They literally changed the face of music and song writing. There are so many amazing songs but my very favourite is All Across the Universe. Everything about it is magical. The surprise London rooftop appearance was their final performance together. ❤

The look is because you're seeing the Beatles were near the end of their journey together. They were together less than 8 years and changed Rock n Roll. None of them had even turned 30 when they broke up in 1970. Ringo Starr and John Lennon were both 29, while Paul McCartney and George Harrison were just 27. Incredible.
