how do you see this video in particular? I am never good at understanding abstract videos, but from what i picked up it felt a bit like the process of becoming depressed. In which he feels he is slowly losing himself while strange things happen to him, until in the end he dies on the inside and he has to wear a mask so society doesn't see him differently?
nick willemsen I see it like the people are trying their hardest to indoctrinate the man in the beginning. He feels like he's different and tries different things to be the same, but he has to change himself. He's no longer the same person when they indoctrinate him. He's part of the cult, who all wear the masks and do the same things.
nick willemsen eehh, i dont really think its about becoming depressed honestly, its seems more like he tries fitting in with society but then tries to run away, but he eventually gives in to the desire to not be an outcast so he gives up and lets them take out an organ (his heart i believe) which turns him into another mindless slave of society
I love this song and think the video is very symbolic. The coldness in his chest represents depression (the first few lines also reflect this). Society views negative emotions as a problem to be treated, and so they force him to be "fixed" by the doctor. They try a variety of methods, including physiological analysis, women and the pursuit of love, and drugs, which are all real-world treatments. In the end, they behead him and pull out his blackened heart, symbolizing, in my opinion, the forcible end of his depressed appearance. They cover him up with a mask, and he becomes another faceless part of the society that has been watching him. This is only a facade though. The last few lines repeat that he is still cold inside, he doesn't feel right. The change is superficial; he is the same, but has now been forced to hide his emotions behind a literal mask. Additionally, the world is void of color until the women first appear. And the line "My life before me like a flash in the night" (3:53) appears just before the beheading. Your life supposedly flashes before your eyes as you die. So being "cured" actually is the end of life. They kill him, take out what they don't want, and then put back together the empty pieces. Also, note how none of the masked people act as individuals. They are a singular entity with no acceptance for what is deemed undesirable behavior.

The way i see it, it describes the process of becoming depressed, in which at the end the heart seems to be gone and he has to live life with a mask to make it seem like nothing is wrong while he is literally dead on the inside?
nick willemsen it seems like the vision of mainstream puts masks on our faces , so every one is "just another brick in the wall" . Man who's not accepted by sociality try to get answer why it's like it is. And then from thousands sounds he hears that he must put the mask and be like others which leads to moment when u loose your heart your "unige soul". I take it this way :)
It's basically a re-education camp they've taken him to. The nazi-like uniforms seem to substantiate that. The masks they're wearing are supposed to hide their real identity and individuality, making them a homogenous mass. The first thing they do when they take him is they cut his hair short. Long hair is usually seen as an indicator of individuality, because it's not accepted in lots of places like banking or the military where people are supposed to conform. Soldiers had to cut their hair short because they needed to wear gas masks that seal tight. Hair would be an issue there. The next thing is they do some sort of rituals on him, which reminds me of Christians trying to pray the gay away. The doctor that treats him is also an indication of that: He takes a bit of his hair and analyses it, then gives him some sort of vaccine while the nurses give him a drug. They also put a thing on his head, which makes him freak out (maybe indoctrination?). The muscular guy is maybe supposed to say that you need to be strong and put up with this sort of treatment. Same with the guy who shows himself swallowing the sword. It's like saying "I can take it! Why can't you?" When these people realize that nothing of this works though, they rip his heart, the thing that seperates him from the others, out after cutting off his head and it's black because living in this kind of environment makes his heart "cold as ice" and black, as mentioned in the song too. It's depression. And then they destroy him just to make him one of them, putting a mask on his face. It's supposed to criticize how society doesn't know how to treat people that are different or that it doesn't like people who are different. In the USA I see this being the case with the constant identity politics and political polarization. People often instantly dehumanize something they don't agree with or what they don't understand (like the guys who is extremely disappointed when he looks at the protagonist's chest and immediately sees evil inside). If you don't fit, if you don't wear the mask, you are cast out. That's what I think. Think I'm gonna post this as a regular comment too :)
Personally, I felt like the main character was supposed to have been depressed, and was being brought to this weird, 50's era type sanitarium. All the weird things being done to him are supposed to represent how it can feel like doctors just try everything even when none of it works. By the end, the doctors are frustrated and do something drastic: cut off his head. This could represent upping the dosage of anti-depressants instead of looking for a particular one that works for the patient, or more literally could represent the practice of lobotomies which in turn represents the struggle and mistreatment of mentally ill people when being treated.

blown away. these guys sound nothing like stones animals or doors. people should listen to 60s garage and discover how awesome it is. don't know anything about this band but heard it on the radio and they brought back the sound of the seeds, chocolate watchband, standells and many other garage bands.
Absolutely agree! Both of your comments are right on the money. I think these guys knew exactly what they were doing, too. The whole video is 60's garage from the '64 Ford Falcon to the high water bell bottoms the lead singer is wearing to the black and white presentation. Yeah...I'll bet if you asked them they would say this was a tribute to their musical influences or else they just like the garage band sound. It sticks out as quite different from the rest of their music. (BTW...just checked out your channel and subscribed. The music you are posting is awesome!)
Yeah, I'm not a music expert, but I dig these guys and they did remind me of The Animals before I saw the video. Is it because I know nothing about actual musical arrangement? Yeah Probably.

I think the music video critiques the consequences of antidepression medication. On the one hand, the individual seeks a 'cure' from their suffering. But on other, the treatment takes away the life force that gives them a unique identity, leaving them numb. Now part of the collective, the individual no longer faces pain at the expense of feeling anything at all.

Look up The Association's song "Windy"
Doctor look into my eyes
I've been breathing air but there's no sign of life
Doctor the problem's in my chest
My heart feels cold as ice but it's anybody's guess
Doctor can you help me cause I don't feel right
Better make it fast before I change my mind
Doctor can you help me cause I don't feel right
Better make it fast before I change my mind
Well it's cold, cold, cold, cold inside
Darker in the day than the dead of night
Cold, cold, cold, cold inside
Doctor can you help me cause something don't feel right
Something don't feel right
Sweet nurse don't look at me that way
I've seen those eyes before I can tell you want to play
Counselor give me some advice
Tell me how hard will I fall if I live a double life
Doctor can you help me cause I don't feel right
Better make it fast before I change my mind
Doctor can you help me cause I don't feel right
Better make it fast because there ain't much time
Well it's cold, cold, cold, cold inside
Darker in the day than the dead of night
Cold, cold, cold, cold inside
Doctor can you help me cause something don't feel right
Something don't feel right, something just ain't right
And as the darkness falls it fills up both my eyes
My life before me like a flash in the night
With my arms open wide
Well it's cold, cold, cold, cold inside
Cold, cold, cold, cold inside
Cold, cold, cold, cold inside
Doctor can you help me cause something don't feel right
Something don't feel right, something just ain't right
Camila Gimenez You're a zombie or a ghost
Camila Gimenez gracias !!!
Camila Gimenez it's anybody's guess...Doctor can you help me cause I don't feel right...Better make it fast before I change my mind 💊💉💺
Huh. I always thought the he was saying " cold cold cold as ice"
it`s both
My Dad heard this and says it sounds like a 60's garage band song...He loves it...But then he is old enough to remember 60's garage bands...
I was born in 1960, and when I first heard it, I thought it was some band from the sixties and I wondered how I'd never heard it before. It is a great song! Cage the Elephant is a great band.
They sounds like Rolling Stones
Sounds like The Kinks, I love it.
I got Rolling Stones, the animals, and a Donovan vibe
Such an amazing vibe late 60's early 70's vibe but somehow still fresh
yooo you know this dope indie band called The Impures? they are so good ! check em out on youtube
@@amo670 nah
anyone else appreciate that one of the guitarists had a blue oyster cult on his jacket?
Adin Rollins Glad I wasn't the only one that caught that!
I been looking in the coments if anyone realized that the begining of this song is kind of similar to The reaper.
congratss for the grammy guys!!! you really deserve it
Yes
“Darker in the day than the dead of night”

I feel so connected to this song, that I can't even describe what feel about this masterpiece.
Oh shit 2017 is already fucking amazing.
CAGE THE ELEPHANT IS LIFE
blown away. these guys sound nothing like stones animals or doors. people should listen to 60s garage and discover how awesome it is. don't know anything about this band but heard it on the radio and they brought back the sound of the seeds, chocolate watchband, standells and many other garage bands.
The music you are posting is awesome!)
hear The Electric Prunes emotion cryin
johnnysnotty I read garbage
Wow just wow people sometimes
Yeah, I'm not a music expert, but I dig these guys and they did remind me of The Animals before I saw the video. Is it because I know nothing about actual musical arrangement? Yeah Probably.
Darker in the day than the dead of night.. hits hard
Yea man..
I'm a metalhead but I love this band.
Same here
Here I am procrastinating, watching the cigarette daydreams music video for the 1,000th time and then I see this in my recommendations completely forgetting that this came out today. I think studying for exams can wait a bit longer
Lauren Hawkins legend
That ending, holy shit
This has always been my favorite song I know every one of the words, just amazing!

@Quinn Libbey ???
Well, German TV brought me here, the song is used as theme for a film featuring an emergency doctor working in the beautiful City of Mannheim in the southern part of Germany..fits like a glove, great song,
If you haven't picked up this album yet your missing out. I suggest viynl.
Brady Amy not if the thing sounds like this, no way. I love their first two albums, but this is shit.
+giraffe whaaatt!? i think this is one of their best songs
James Matharu blasphemy
I tried to pick it up, but it was too heavy. Probably because of the elephant they caged
giraffe first two? Perfect confusion and Cage The Elephant or CTE and Thank You Happy Birthday? And there's reason for name shit the 3rd album, it's called Melophobia. This album is good, but it isn't the same CTE, they changed direction

The lead singers Idol is Mick Jagger so go figure ..incredible band🔥
Love the Blue Öyster cult logo on the guitarist arm sleeve absolutely sounds straight out of the 1970s
I noticed it and had to scour the comments section to make sure I wasn't crazy lol
I totally agree too this is 100% 70s vibes
Why does this band always makes me remember someone that I just want to forget??
This song is such an aroace mood.
there is this song called Faceless Humming by The Impures , u should listen to it n check it out
this videos sick,
I love the symbology can you see the masonic influence w the checkered floor and bondage scenes. Stay real elephants.
Frank Hernandez- Omg, I totally picked up on the Masonic symbolism. Creepy af and yet I can’t get enough of this video. I’m so addicted to this song!!!
Him loosing his heart definitely symbolizes him giving up what's unique about himself, then putting the mask on references fitting a mold
It’s insane this is 6 years old today
I think the music video critiques the consequences of antidepression medication. On the one hand, the individual seeks a 'cure' from their suffering. But on other, the treatment takes away the life force that gives them a unique identity, leaving them numb. Now part of the collective, the individual no longer faces pain at the expense of feeling anything at all.
@Janky_Vagaries Thank you man. My uncultured brain could not comprehend what this was about. Your comment gave some insight into the thought behind the song.
This sounds straight up from the 60's - 70's for sure
Yeaaah i thought the same !!
More 60's than anything.
More 60s than actual 60s
They remind me a lot of The animals.
Nícolas Do Nascimento is more like the blues oyster cult, actually in the 4:10 minute you can see a patch with the logo of this band in the guitarist jacket.
I just found this song today.
Tears of joy .
Creo que soy la única que hablo español y quiero que sepan que está canción es un rolón bien hecho saludos desde Puebla ...
Uy, me encanta el mole. Tienes buenos gustos
TH-cam just recommended this to me and fair play, I'll binge listen their whole discography...
Who else think this sounds like "Steady as she goes" ?

Maybe if that song was like half the speed and sounded completely different, yeah.
That nurse looks very alike Sabrina Spellman!

Thank you, spotify, for showing me my new favorite band
That´s literally how you are feeling right now, right?
Consistently
this song was so amazing live
I get goosebumps every time I listen to this even though I've heard it dozens of times
NOTIF PARTY
So catchy , damn! The music is just right and the video keeps your eyes locked on the screen! Good job... And of course it´s not without a message either - but with any type of art it´s always the viewers interpretation for what it means to them
Had a 2.5 years long distance relationship and we were so in love (so I thought), we would share our screen and listen to each others fav songs. This was her fav song and I remember watching this clip thinking what am I watching. Now song hits very hard and clip gives me the chills.
I like cage the elephant because they use a guitar unlike most "rock" bands
Literally everyone uses a guitar in bands, there are just different types of guitar idiot
Your smart oh wait no your not so since you arn't smart i'll just tell you i was being sarcastic
What kind of rock bands are you talking about? I listen to like 25 different bands, and every one of them uses a guitar...
Then they aren't rock bands 😂
u actually meant "the way they play the guitar"
Why aren't they more popular yet?
I know! They should famous.
The sound the car makes at the beginning its the exact same in PUBG 🚗
A Clockwork Orange. Holy shit, I love this band!
Impressionante está música, tem uma sonoridade que dá a impressão que, estamos ouvindo um grupo do final dos anos 60!? Acho que atualmente não há outro grupo tão eclético e criativo quanto Cage The Elephant. O que vcs acham?❤️🎶
