My favourite bit about Colm talking to Mary on the phone is that he talks about the weather for a bit first before bringing up the fact he's in the police station 😭😂
Ah but don't forget, last time she had him talking for 45 mins about his new shoelaces!!!!!

Uncle Colm is hilarious, despite everyone else finding him dull and boring. It's hysterical how his meandering stories are actually very exciting, it's just the way he tells them that's tedious! 😂😅

Just realized colm is telling sister Michael the exact same story he was trying to tell Mary before she cuts him off. Literally word for word like he rehearsed it 😂

And with the young guy he got at the wedding, too, he's re-telling the story about being robbed....again
He probably has like four stories he tells everyone. I have older relatives like that.

Parents not answering the landline in case it’s a relative that would be on for ages, brings back some childhood memories.
It reminds me of the time we rang my husband's brother (who left Ireland and lives in Germany) to wish his little son a happy birthday (the card was in the post but I posted it late and his brother was a stickler for dates so I said we'd ring to bridge the gap). We were delighted when he wasn't there and it went straight to answer machine (he's a huge bragger). I put the phone (landline) on speaker and myself and my girls sang happy birthday. We ended the call and I told my husband I'm going out and if he rings back be sure to answer. To which my husband informed me he wouldn't and he preceded to rant about his brother and how mind numbingly boring he is and how he brags about his son constantly (he actually mentioned his brother would get his son's belly button fluff tested in the Bundestag laboratory and it would find that he had the smartest belly button fluff in Germany). In fairness my daughter volunteered to answer, she said she likes uncle Paul. Next thing didn't we hear a voice message in German and a beep! The phone hadn't hung up because it was on speaker and when I put the receiver down it was still active! Everything my husband had said was recorded! We ended up feeling bad and going to Germany to visit. That was our last holiday abroad (2010) very unseasonable weather too we had to layer up all our clothes feckin freezing it was in May!! To this day neither him nor us ever mentioned the phone message.

This has to be one of the best written comedies and best acted that I have seen. Makes me laugh and cry. Simply superb!
I totally agree,a brilliantly written and acted comedy,every character is spot on,I even know someone like Colm🤣 There will be tears when it ends.

Orla is my favouitre character
Clearly the most standouts in the series, Uncle Colm and Sister Michael. They steal every scene they are in. And when they do get together, well Colm completes his story.

Colm could have been a father ted character, this programme is basically a hybrid of that and the inbetweeners in female form. Two of the best sitcoms ever so it’s a thumbs up for Derry girls!

As a character, Colm is basically the same as Father Austin Purcell, the dull priest played by Ben Keaton

This. He's basically a blend of the rambling stories of Father Purcell and the boringness of Father Stone.
Any Derry Girl fans out there not familiar with Father Ted, do yourself a favour and watch it. It was a cultural comedic milestone in Ireland in the 90's even bigger than Derry Girls. You even see a few familiar faces. Similar in comedic tone to Derry Girls in some ways but more chaotic and exaggerated.

Uncle Colm is hilarious. He manages his little monologues so dead pan, and apart from the odd raising of an eyebrow, without any change of expression on his face. He's real scene stealer 😁.
I love Uncle Colm. He's hilarious. Every time he shows up you know it's gonna be a proper laugh. Brilliant.

i love this last season they use uncle colm as a distraction when they're screwed and michelle hugging him was so cute it's like they were so united he became everyone's honorary uncle
Kevin McAleer is a comedy genius. He has the single best delivery of any other comic I ever worked with or saw. With just the faintest of vocal tone changes in between each, like a precision Swiss timepiece, pause, he allows the silence to absolutely floor you in fits of laughter. I genuinely believe that Mr McAleer is the finest comedian to be born on our islands.
His appearance in the first episode of season 3 had me in stitches 😂

Only Uncle Colm could make a woman dropping dead out of nowhere sound boring.
It's the absolutely brutal camera work that makes Colm as funny as he is. The angles, how he is centred in the frame, no movement. Sure, your man does a grand job so he does but the direction should be claiming a lot more praise.

My family immigrated from Ireland about a thousand years ago, and I can tell ya, this trait hangs on like a hair in a biscuit in our family! I do not take a call from my mother unless: I have gone to the toilet, have a cup of tea and snack, some time on my hand, laundry to fold during the duration, dog to brush........thank the good Lord for the 'cordless'!!!!!
