On February 7, 2022, deputies responded to a TSA security checkpoint after discovering a handgun at Key West International Airport in Florida. The man said he may have forgotten to remove it from his backpack. And the worst part… he didn’t have a concealed carry permit.

The worst part was not that he had no govt central planning CCW "permission" to use his 2A right wherever he may be, reaffirmed by the SCOTUS just this year, it was that he was required to have one. Shall Not Be Infringed. At worst, he should've been given a ticket, had his weapon and ammo checked in for him in a special case, at his cost, and sent on his way. If the passengers on all the downed planes of 9/11 had been armed,* we would still be staring at those hideous post-modern towers to this day, the Pentagon would have been untouched and there'd be no memorial in a field in Pennsylvania. And the misnamed Patriot Act would not have become our domestic spying on the American People agency, with a rubber-stamp FISA court of cowards.
*Airline fuselages can take massive hits from debris and broken parts and still fly, so the movie depiction of a plane suddenly depressurizing after a gun shot to the fuselage is pure fiction. Cf. Aloha Airlines Flt 243.

I have never had this happen and that is because it only takes 30 seconds to check your bag. I always check my bag. I go into every pocket with my hands and I pull every single item out of the bag no matter what it is. Then I keep every single pocket open and I grab the bottom of the bag and I shake it to make sure that I have missed nothing. No of course that wouldn't be necessary to find a hidden firearm because as soon as you pick it up you're going to notice the significantly added weight to the bag comparative to how it should feel when it's completely empty. So yeah I don't ever feel sorry for people like this and I certainly don't ever make excuses for them because there isn't anything. He is an irresponsible gun owner. I'm afraid to admit this almost happened to me in 2015. The family was in Florida, and I was flying out to join them. I worked half a day and arranged for a friend to pick me up at home and take me to the airport. Some family members asked me to bring assorted items that I laid out by the inside front door to my home along with a change of clothes for myself and my luggage. Work kept me later than I wanted, and I was running late. The friend was in my driveway waiting on me. I pulled up, jumped from the truck, and took my carry piece off, throwing it in my work backpack with no intent to take it with me. I put the backpack close to the front door. I changed clothes and realized a family member had texted me to bring some additional items. I ran around the house looking for the item and decided there wasn't enough room in my luggage, so I threw it in my work backpack and took it with me. About 20 minutes from the airport, I was looking for a piece of gum I carried in the side pocket of my backpack and thought, "This feels heavy. OMG!" Luckily the friend and husband are avid firearm enthusiasts and were able to keep the firearm for me in their safe. Phew!!!

I was an American living in China about 10 years ago (before things got bad for foreigners), and as I was passing through security for an internal flight, they found a multi-tool in my backpack, which had several knife blades in it. They took me back to the airport security station and I thought for sure I was in for some pretty serious consequences.
They filled out all sorts of paperwork and then asked me to write my name on an envelope. They placed my multi-tool in the envelope and told me when I returned from my trip I could take the claim ticket they handed me, go downstairs to a claim window and get my tool back. That was it… a week later I returned, went to the window and 5 minutes later they gave me my tool. From what I later discovered they did that for people with other prohibited items - for example a large bottle of expensive perfume, expensive wine, etc.
Here in the USA - that’s it. You’ll never see it again.

This is actually pretty common. When you get use to doing your daily routine, you tend to forget as a human. I have a CCW, and every time before I walk through TSA at an airport, I double check my waist band to make sure my gun is not on me because I carry 24/7 except through an airport. It’s just natural for me to be carrying, just like it’s natural for someone who has certain routines. I once said, how the heck do you ever leave a kid in a car. Well one day, I was on the phone chatting away while my kid was young and I pull up in my work parking garage and realize, I forgot to go to the daycare to drop the kid off. Once again, we are all human, we get distracted and we make mistakes. As for this guys backpack, my guess is he carry’s this gun in there 24/7 and was planning on taking it out and putting it in his vehicle somewhere or giving it to the wife when they got to the airport and forgot. His demeanor really seemed like he forgot.
