The kid didn't open the door, he didn't kick out the window, and he didn't ask for anyone to help him. It's natural human instinct to escape imprisonment, and it was the cop's fault for allowing him to escape, and the other kid's fault for opening the door. Running through an open door is not illegal.
As for why the first charge was dropped, I'm guessing he was a first time offender and after having been jailed after arrest the judge probably figured any prison sentence would just amount to time already served.

I do, however, see the point that procedure should have been upheld and, beyond that, both fighting parties should have been arrested and held (separately) in the drunk tank, if necessary, Disorderly conduct citations ought have been levied, rather than assault-related charges. And, finally, the cops ought have received personality tests and aptitude tests to ensure they were intelligent and stable enough to be cops. Anyone know if the guy who unlocked the door was ever identified or prosecuted. Also, the idiot cop who keeps repeating that kid is going to prison just because he ran. I bet you if he plead out, the escape charge was probably dropped. For law enforcement to repeatedly make comments about someone going to prison is just shameful and ignorant. On the other hand, the lack of respect this generation has for any law enforcement or anyone in authority is going to have a rude awakening as they continue their pointless existence. As a kid and teenager, my parents would have disciplined me to the fullest extent if they found out i was behaving this way and talking to law enforcement in that manner. I was by no means a good kid growing up, but my parents made sure I knew the difference between right or wrong, and that my actions have consequences, good or bad, that I have no control over. I don't know where this age group got the idea to not only behave this way, but then try to claim they weren't doing anything wrong or inappropriate. This has become every day for them. This is THEIR "normal".
