Just finished my first set.... got 9400 Miles (15000Kms) and they stayed a good shape though out that time. The front wore out slightly faster than the rears... and now I have put my second set on.. Very pleased. I previously had Metzler Roadtec 01's ( 4 sets) they would wear out at about 5000 miles but also would square off well before then, then round up again when you found some corners. The 01's would be instantly warm whilst I find the 5's need a bit of heating... The 5's feel far more sporty.
Finally...someone who actually gives a real world review of a tyre without re-hashing the media blurb or fully technical info. You've helped made my mind up for when th S1KR needs new tyres...which is very soon!!!!
I have only just discovered your channel and I take my hat off to you for an honest review. What I am really grateful for is you mentioning that the rear profile tyre sent by Michelin has changed the way FZ1 handles in corners as this wide, fat tyre was reminding me about its existence into tight corners on my FZ1... Ride safe and keep up good work!
Totally awesome tyres. Transformed the handling on my bike. Rode the back routes / single and dual track roads to Bewdley from South of Reading last summer in heavy rain. There was all sorts of crud washed on to these roads with little traffic to clear it, floods, blossom, twigs and branches sand and gravel. The Road 5s handled it all superbly. I have been riding for 40 years and never owned anything as good/confidence inspriring as the Road 5s. 8K miles later and the is still some wear - probably 1000-1500 miles left. They are also really good in the dry, following riders commented on how much dust they throw out.
I noticed the amount of EVERYTHING that these tyres throw up when i was behind other people with them. I agree on all fronts. I’ve never known confidence like it either. I’ll definitely be getting them again!
Just had these installed today on my FZ-10 and earlier I had heard how amazing these tires are. Now after watching this I am really happy I choose them.
With you 100% on this - these tyres transformed my FZ1. Give fantastic confidence in the wet. Improve the feel of the bike. Best road tyres I have ever used in 25 years - a genuine milestone in tyres.
That's very impressive how the bike's handling characteristics were so vastly improved, sounds very confidence inspiring as well. Not dragging any knees here, but now I'm curious as to how they would be on my '11 Versys, Tire tech, never thought I'd be that into it but this is pretty intriguing. Thanks for the honest and thorough review, Andy!
I wasn’t expecting such a marked sharpening of the handling. Maybe some is in my mind, but the majority is definitely real! I have no trouble imagining that they would work very well on the Versys. Wet performance superior to the PR3’s, but also with all the dry surefootedness of the Pirelli Diablo Stradas (which I really liked on the versys too). I’m keen to see just how long they can hold up too!
Great video 👍🏾. I just put them on my 2017 BMW S1000RR. AMAZING!!!!! I love them. And just my opinion. They are made for the street. I’m coming off Q3+. That were not stable in real world riding. Maybe they are better on a clean track. But these Michelin Road 5’s are the best I’ve had on this bike. Built for real world road riding. Michelin I’m home.😂🤣 Thanks again. ✌️
Cheers Adam. I'm glad I made it too, because I got to see first hand just how much the reality really does live up to the hype! I'll be getting another pair of these this season, for sure!
I've been lucky enough to have Road 5s on my KTM 990 SMT since January. In April, my brother and I headed to Spain where, in one day, we left a very damp Potes, in the Picos de Europa, where temps were as low as 0.5ºC heading up to 27ºC by the time we reached our destination of Mora d'Ebre some 700kms away. A couple of days later, after riding through Andorra, in France we hit two days of poor weather accompanied with heavy rain, snow and side winds on the last day - knocking off 20 miles off of fuel from the tank. If I needed something to rely on on that totally crap ride back home, then my faith was in those tyres. Solid, confident and planted on any road surface, any temperature, wet or dry. I've had PR3s, lasting 8.5k miles with the next generation PR4s just about touching 10k miles but I'm pretty sure these boots will walk over the 10k miles with ease. Upper-end price maybe, but so well worth the money. Without doubt, in my opinion, these are the best tyres on the market. Everything you have said in your video I completely agree. Keep up your fantastic work and thank you for putting this review up.
Thanks very much. My pleasure! Sounds like you had the same perfect timing with fitting these tyres and then getting crappy weather that I did! I was so happy to have had them on in the Black Forest, so I can imagine your smugness at having the same confidence despite rubbish riding conditions! Winter riding can be good again!!
You're welcome. You are right out about my smugness! Soaking wet roads and not one unexpected flinch. I have to hand it to Michelin; their thinking not extend the sipes to the edges of the tyre is a great move - after all who leans that far in water-soaked roads? Compared to the PR3s and 4s you now have more road contact as you power through corners in dry weather. Ride safe, Andy.
I got a nail in my tire at 1500 miles on my Yamaha FJR and was forced to get a replacement. Went with the new tire on the front, the Michelin PR5. 11 Months later and 10000 miles and I just replaced it today. It is literally the best tire I have ever ridden, and actually it outperforms my ability. Got myself into a situation where I overcooked a corner, started slowing up, activated ABS i was braking so hard, then found the radius in the corner started decreasing. Basically the worst situation that you can get into loading up a front tire and pulling ABS, and then I rode into a shady spot on the road that hadn't dried out and had pollen and a whole bunch of road gunk on it. The tire took it, and it didn't feel like it was anything outside of the ordinary. No loss of traction, or anything approaching it, the tire is literally Voodoo. I don't think with any other tire I would have managed to stay upright and riding, this tire is an 11 out of 10 on my scale. Add to that I got 10k out of it and I am sold. Granted, the water pockets on the sides were mostly gone on the middle and kind of there on the very outside so I could kind of tell the difference between the different compounds. They aren't kidding with the 2ct stuff, it really works well.
Awesome stuff! I'm not at all surprised Dennis! As you say, these shoes use some kind of voodoo and the amount of confidence and grip that they give is nothing short of miraculous. I've never known riding like it. (that's what she said).
At 1500 miles, the other tyre would have still been practically new. If you’ve got cash to burn, sure. You can throw a 15-20% worn tyre in the bin. I personally would have also just changed the punctured tyre. Of course in Germany, you’re legally restricted to matched pairs. But that’s another story...
Andy Man Cam , agreed but the two tyres may have totally different handling characteristics. For example, you have Mich Road5 on back and factory up front, what is giving up first when you feel cool in the wet.? Not a budget thing, just make sure both tyres are doing the same thing.
I totally agree too ..these tyres are the best I've had !!! I commute on a Z1000SX and do 11000 miles year in all weather...including a very hot summer (last year) and a wettish winter ..they've been outstanding !!!!!! 7000 miles and I had a puncture and the guy who changed the tyre said that it was annoying to get a puncture on unworn tyres???!!!!! then I told him id done 7000 miles on them !!!!! he couldn't believe it !!!!! Very good all-round tyre ...I would highly recommend ...!!!!!
Haha! Brilliant! Yeah, they're properly impressive. I have no doubt that (avoiding punctures) my tyres will easily last a second season. Easily the best boots that I've ever put on my bike.
Always only ran the road 4’s on my concours. Great tires but now I’m on my first set of road 5’s now and I’m sure everyone will agree that NOBODY will use the 4’s after trying the 5’s! I’m guessing Michelin will probably eventually discontinue the 4’s as why would you want an inferior tire? In the dry, the 4’s in hard cornering WILL get squirrelly (too much sipping on the shoulders) the 5’s not one bit. They hold tight and sticky and feel very confident. Can’t wait to wear out the new set so I can start over again. Totally completely worth the money. Nice video Andy. I agreed with absolutely everything you recognized about these amazing new Michelin Road 5’s. Thank you!
Thanks for this video, I totally agree. My new CB500X came with Dunlop Trailmax and they were horrible. Changed them at 3000 miles for Road 5's and it was like a new bike, I was giggling all the way home after fitting. Now got a new F750GS and it has Anakee 3's and they slip like hell on wet muddy Scottish B-roads so about to get them swapped for Road 5's, can't wait. The difference is phenomenal. I don't care about tyre life I care about MY life and want the stickiest tyres available. Cheers.
Absolutely!! Even if the available range was half as much, as long as those miles were super grippy and safe, then it would be worth it. Pointless having a fire breathing sex machine of a bike, if you can't actually use it because you scrimped on the boots! I continue to be impressed with my set of Fives. Even though they were nearly bald in Scotland, they provided unbelievable levels of grip during a week of continuous rain!
I was fouled into buying the Road 5 from all the positive reviews. They were horrible on hot dry roads, but did better in the rain. Although there was a few times passing cars in the rain it fish tailed. They have absolutely no grip accelerating on dry clean pavement. Because of the constant wheel spin, like if it was on sand covered roads, they squared off very early. I finally gave up at 8,000 km. Replaced them with Power 5. Huge improvement. Because the Road 5 is a massive failure I got to say I've lost total confidence in any reviews on youtube.
Shame you had that experience. I found them friggin fantastic accelerating out of corners on hot dry tarmac. As well as cold wet tarmac and everything in between. I guess losing faith in all TH-cam reviews is probably a bit strong, but perhaps you should accept that the opinions are very particular. That exact bike, with that exact rider in those exact conditions. Unless you’re in the exact same scenario then your mileage will naturally vary. I honestly thought these tyres were astonishingly good and I’d happily pay money to have them again. There is also a very strong majority of people who feel the same way as me. That’s not to say that your experience is wrong in any way. Tyres are a very personal thing and one man’s poison can easily be another man’s medicine. If they’re not for you, that doesn’t mean they aren’t dynamite for somebody else. Overall you can trust that i personally will always say exactly and honestly how i feel about anything i use. I’m never suggesting that it’ll be the same for everybody else. But for me, in that moment, that’s exactly how i felt. With no hidden agenda, shifty motivations or corporate targets.
@@AndyManCam I've heard others here in Thailand have the same result as I have. And hear mentioned that the pavement here is much different do to high heat... So possibly that is the factor.
I reckon that has definitely got something to do with it. That and the overall extremely high ambient temperature. When pushed hard, I found these tyres started to reach their limit at about 35 degrees C. And you are over that almost year round!
I have ‘never’ been disappointed with the Pilot Road range of tyres and I’ve had 1-4 between the BMW R1100S and 1200S. I too also notice that it takes quite a few miles before noticing any wear. Even the old macadams were pretty good overall too. The GRISO is on Metzeler Z8’s that I’ve only ridden in the dry and appear to grip OK but lack feel. Once they’re done for I’ll be putting PR5’s on it. I know I won’t be disappointed with them.
That doesn't surprise me Steve. They're impressing my socks off mate. I think folks will believe my gushing when I eventually have to pony up my own money for the next set. And I would definitely choose these.
Gary Jackson What aspect ratio did you go with.? I’ve got the 08 B King. I’m in the northern coast range mints California. Lost of twisties . I think I like the idea of falling in easier with the 55’s and also they hold more air for cushier ride on the bumps? Do you think that’s sound thinking on the B King? Thanks
Great review Andy, (except that horrible music that comes in at 5:32). I normally wouldn't believe that type of glowing praise, but I trust you, (so please don't give us any reason to question that). Again, thanks for the honest opinions.
Just put a set of these on my 1990 zzr1100 and I have to say the wet grip is amazing. I'm in Scotland and haven't had much in the way of dry weather lol. Great vid keep it up m8.
I just got a one of these put on my SV650 2 days ago after a nail took out my rear Metzeler M7RR and had pretty much all of the same thoughts about how they are crazy sticky in dry and wet conditions and also really agile and flickable without seeing anybody else's opinions on them. So I guess that just confirms my own conclusion that these tires are absolutely amazing.
It’s always better when you make your findings blind, for yourself, and then see that everybody else found the same. Rather than be told how they’ll behave and then convince yourself subconsciously that they’re that good. Really glad we both felt the same Brendan and mostly happy you’ve got the right tyres for your own ride mate! Happy traction hunting!
"Fer dog's sake" Ha. I say that too. I agree with your assessment. I have them on My ZRX1200. Steering is lighter , grip is better ,confidence higher and most surprising to me I can use all of the tread on the rear despite it's sportier profile compared to my previous PR4's. A big improvement over the PR4 which I thought were the ducks nuts. Amazing. And , here in Australia road 5's are cheaper than PR4's. Happy Days!
Today I changed my first set of Road 5's after 15k km. The new set, of course the same! So happy with their grip and their longevity! The only "downside" to them (if we can call it a downside) is a wiggly feeling from the rear tyre while coming out of a corner. Nothing serious but I felt it more than 5-10 times in their lifetime. Most have something to do with the dip grooves in the middle portion of the tyre
15,000! That's awesome! I've not noticed the wriggling TBH and I was pretty heavy on the gas out of most (all) of the bends in Switzerland. But I guess every setup is slightly different. Maybe you were just closer to their limit than I was. The full punt of my FZ1 doesn't really come in until over 6000 rpm. By which time in 1st I'm already doing about 70km/h!!
I have them on my VFR 1200X and will go back to the road 4. Grip levels in wet on both 4 and 5 are equivalent. However I have a modified stiff suspension, adjusted for higher speeds. The road 4 has softer body, offers higher riding comfort at lower speeds and better control in the corners. My impression is, that road 5 offers more, if you take it to the limits on a race track, while it has become worse for the every day driving on the streets. I recommend everyone to try both, the experience my differ from bike to bike.
Horses for courses mate. The important thing is that you get and use what works best for you! I've never tried the PR4's so couldn't possibly comment. I also prefer a firmer and more direct ride (that's what she said). Cheers for watching!
@@AndyManCam All I'm saying is, don't believe blindly the motorbike press driving the tires on race tracks or the Michelin's sales department. The newer is not always better. Many advantages they claim are often a result of modifying the tires parameters and not archived by technological progress. The 5 is a more sporty tire than the 4 was. Both are very good tires, no question. However for my all season, all weather long range rides, I like to have a more comfortable touring tire.
Sure. Personal taste comes into it a lot too. I prefer a sportier tyre and I like a firm and ‚connected‘ ride so that I know what’s going on underneath me. With that in mind, the 5 is definitely the better choice for my riding. Also without doubt the best tyre that I personally have ever ridden in nearly 14 years. No hype heeded! 😉
Tried road 5s on my Blackbird. Front tyre too soft .Wore out in 8months about 3k kms.Rear about 1/2 worn. Front on middle of road side worn side down past indicators. Need GT version for heavier bikes. Now on Pirellis Angel GTs & looking good.
Just picked up a set yesterday for my fz1. Had road 4 on it when i picked it up a 2 years ago. First set of new tires on this bike, im looking forward to trying these tires. Ive mostly only heard great things about them.
I also ride Road 5 on my Versys 1000 and there's no comparison with the Brigestone A41 she came fitted with. No confidence in the A41 under rain. When I came out of the shop, I checked my bike because she felt 30 kgs lighter with the Michelin. Security has no price and a fallen motorbike is far more expensive than the difference of price between brands of tyres.
I totally agree mate! Why save 20-30 quid on tyres for your €5,000-€25,000 bike?! YOu might as well be able to enjoy it to the max and also not feel like you're going to bin it! The confidence I had in Scotland last year, despite the incredible wetness, was simply astonishing. I think it's widely accepted that OE tyres are toss and should be instantly swapped for something proper. Another sad way in which the manufacturers act like they're doing you a favour (comes with brand name free tyres, which are almost always cheaper, harder versions of the real ones) when really they're just making your life more annoying for the first 5000 miles!
I have a zx10r, bought it with worn michelin pilot 3s and got a nice fresh set of road 5s today! Cant wait to wear them in and se how they are. I did so much research for weeks. My dealer done great deal on them so im happy. That video of yours was great mate! Thankyou.
Yes, I LOVE my Road 5s, I run them on my Versys and the bike feels absolutely planted with them when leaned over, and the wet weather traction is incredible.
I’ve just put a set of these on my R Nine T and done about 500 miles so far through pissing rain and dry 20C days and I’m massively impressed with them.
Sold! 😉👍 Definitely gonna be getting me a set for my MT07 once my stock rubber is done..... I think people underestimate how much difference a good set of shoes can make to a bikes performance.
Absolutely Alex. The best bike in the world would be a pig to ride with bad tyres. Plus the effect it has on your confidence when you can trust in your rubber is priceless (that’s what she said)
Excellent review! The cost is high but you may have convinced to pay up for my 2014 V Strom 1000. I don't go off-road with it but need a tire that won't square off so quick and confidence in rain would be nice. My wife and I do a lot of touring also. If they last longer I feel the price is justifiable!
I totally agree. They’ll easily last twice as long as the M7RR that was on the back before, and cost about the same. Simple maths! Plus I’m not good enough to be able to tell any difference between the performance. Money well spent in my opinion.
Payed advert from Michelin... could be but yes they do make good tyres. Loved the editing on this video Andy very well put together, only criticism a little long. Glad your enjoying your fz1 🖒
The tyres were given for free, but no money was handed over for a glowing review. In fact it wasn’t even suggested that i would slant my review towards the positive. I guess that Michelin know how much of a solid product they have!! Plus I’d never give fake reviews in exchange for money and devalue my trustability! Cheers Flip.
I want to thank you, I’ve been looking for someone who was reviewing the road 5’s. I’ve been on the m7rr for a few years, they are just about bald. But I couldn’t find any info to compare for long lasting mileage. You answered that question for me. Thanks again.
Paul - I've got some M7rrs on my street triple. I do a few track days a year (pre-Covid-19) and scared the Road 5's were be too road oriented. How did they stack up?
lolcatmaroon sorry misread, the road 5, I've taken it only once to the hills, I didn't see any issues with it. It definitely feels different from the m7, but when they were new all it wanted to do was tight turns
Hey Mate I had Road 3's on my VFR 800 and after putting on Road 5's the bike feels like a totally animal so nimble and responsive and sticks like glue to the road with less wobbly feeling from the rear when cornering solid tyre Cant wait to enjoy lots of Km's of fun with these! Best tyre i've ridden on so far too !
I like your review, and i have bought these tyres, but having driven trucks all over the EU, I also own a bike, i feel the biggest issue you missed was the fact you are riding on a totally different road surface in parts of the EU, I haven't noticed one pot hole yet on your route, i don't think you would be so relaxed riding over the snake pass, or Woodhead, or the cat and fiddle, and a lot of our roads in the uk are tar sprayed, tyres perform different on different road surfaces, but great review.
Fantastic French Rubber on my VTR 1000F FIRESTORM:) A Road pilot 3 is my current Weapon of Choice but in all of its variations riders have recommended these tyres. but I from experience have ridden Dunlop Arrowmax fitted to a VFR 400RR/Middleweight performance bikes with no problems. I must admit I have had nothing but wet and dry confidence bearing in mind this machine I ride is a savage beast on acceleration and pure engine braking:) But this Sports touring tyre is excellent.
It does seem that nowadays it is hard to actually find a bad tyre. All the companies are making great products. I guess it ultimately comes down to preference, riding style and how much cash is in your wallet!
@@AndyManCam Hey Andy. I've done 3000 km now, in all kinds of weather, even extreme cloudburst. the road turned into a lake and i was still doing 100 km/h! I love my road 5's. Incredible grip and handling. i'm a pretty aggressive rider, and these tyres just gives me so much confidence. I'm never gonna buy anything else, damn they are good!
Hy Andy, thumbs up and thanks for your report after 5000km. Currently in the winter I´m searching for a new for my Tracer 900. It´s not so easy to find a feedback about tires after long time distance of riding. Nearly whole of the current tires are brilliant for the first 2000-3000km, but after long riding distances the perfomance is crashing down sometimes. I´m using Metzeler Roadtec 01 for the last 8000km. The new tires were brilliant, but after 5000-6000km the perormance broke down rapid and I don´t want to drive any additional km. My current 2 favourits are ROAD 5 or Pirelli Angel GT, 70/30 for the ROAD 5 tire. Thanks a lot and left hand side for greetings. Wish you a happy new year.
Cheers Oliver. Happy to have helped. I've not had Angel GT's, but The Likeable Rider has had both and sings the praises of the Road 5's over the GT's. Happy new year to you too mate!
Before i put Road 5s on my Aprilia Tuono I had 2 sets of Pirelli Angel GTs. Fine tyres indeed, but Road 5s feel so much better. Also Angels tend to wear off centre and replaced after about 5000 miles although centre and edge fine - something about softer rubber just off centre.
Nice video as always Andy! I too have those tyres in my 2017 Z1000SX and they are amazing indeed, best all-rounders I've tried and on my bike they last around 10-12k kms (2 sets so far, about to get the 3rd)! Sure they are a bit expensive but you get as twice Kms with the same grip in all their life tan almost any other tyre!
Best thing I've done for my Street Triple is stick sports touring tyres on (Z8s). More confidence in all conditions than the OEM tyres and last twice as long. I've come to the conclusion that hyper sports tyres are a con, unless you do half your mileage on dry track days and print your own money. These will be my next set. Thanks for doing my research for me.
They seem to be smashing it in terms of all round performance lately. I agree with you. Unless you'Re mostly track riding, you can't fault a good set of sport tourers.
Got them on my MT10, did a 2000 mile Euro tour and overall 3500 + miles so far. They are standing up to the power of the 10 well, no scary moments wet or dry. What more can you want? The duel compound join area in the tyre is clearly defined with the shoulder rubber noticeably more scuffed up. They are definitely a step up from the good PR4s I had on previously.
Sounds just like my experience so far. Very very impressed despite the screaming old R1 lump surging through the rear! I guess the more scuffed up shoulders just shows how much more sticky that section is!
I’ve been running these on my Busa for almost 6 months, only starting to get near the limiters now and I ride every day, so far I’ve but 23k on them and will be buying another set. Not easy riding too, I think if I was less aggressive I’d get a lot more K’s out of them. Still sticking hard in the wet conditions too.
Andy Man Cam yeah still a huge wow factor for me. Ian down Suzuki Springwood is blown away just as much. My mates with an SP2 and Gixxer k8 thou are now riding with them. Downside would be the middle part is a little lower than the shoulders but that’s being overly picky and standard. Love the way they handle.
Yep. Great tyres. On second set now. 13000 kms from the front and 19000 from the rear. Suit my GSF1250 well. Had 2 sets of Metzler M7s previously. Highly recommend the Road 5s..
Nice review - particularly liked the drone footage of you pulling up to show us the tyres - not often you see that level of forethought in production. Any chance of the long awaited video of the latest Sony helmet mount setup? Or, given your time pressures, a picture or two on Instagram? Pretty please?!
Thanks very much Rick! I try to push the bar a little every time! Though my continuity with the weather is awful!! 🤪 I WILL get to the helmet setup, I promise! Especially now that the opportunities for riding will be lessening with every day.
The mark of a Moto-courier is probably about as good as it gets! I'm really enjoying the Avon Spirit ST's right now too. Performance very similar, but two thirds the price.
Just had a set fitted, i did 200km from the moment they were fitted and obviously gotta go easy with new tires bit even so these were very confident tires
I’ve the PR5’s on both my Tracer 900 and my R1200RT and I would have to agree with you whole heartedly! They are brilliant in the rain and the sun. That coupled with the fact that they seem to be wearing incredibly well ( I hate changing tires!), means these will be my tire of choice for a very long time to come. May I ask what tire pressures you’re running? The BMW forum seems to agree that running their RT’s at 40/42 psi (front/rear) seems to be reducing cupping and increasing the mileage of the rubber. Comments?
You and me both mate! The faff of realigining everything and then shelling out £50 for a 10 minute job! Best to avoid as much as possible! I guess higher pressures would give a stiffer tyre and therefore less flex and creep as the rubber looks for grip. I run 37/43 and the cupping is so far almost unnoticeable. But I wonder what the increased pressure does for overall traction and comfort. I suppose everything is a trade off and a compromise. We’ll see how mine are fairing after another 5000km.
I live in New Mexico. Little rain. Do you think I'd be better off with the Dunlop Roadsmart III's for my Tracer 900? They seem...more like a slick...perhaps better in dry conditions. I want traction under max acceleration in first gear.
Ok. I have brand new tires (2nd hand moto delivered with these).. And I will certainly change for the Road 5. And you're right this road in Black Forrest is amazing (and wet as well)...
Dude!! How the hell have you been.. I absolutely enjoyed your reviews and thank you!! Enjoyed ur verbiage and choice of words! I was on the fence about these tires and with your review I have decided to get a set! Thx again!
I bought the Michelin Pilot road 4's for this reason. Here in the Netherlands you better have tires that work in the wet :D. Good to know that Michelin is still pushing the performance of their "wet"- tire to be better in the dry as well.
It’s impressive isn’t it!? We would have been forgiven for thinking that the PR4 had squeezed out all the grip possible. But oh no, they go and raise the bar again!
You were tiptoeing around the bends that were tight enough to require lean. That was a smart thing as the sides of those silly buns are slick. I'm sure they work fine in the rain in the center of the tire as most any ST tires do. If you want to save some money, try a Dunlop Roadsmart III. Groves and wet grip to the tire's edge rain or dry.
I was doing exactly what the tyres were designed for. Maximum 35 degree lean before you get to the slicks. I felt no need to lean over any further in the wet and the slick edges in the dry mean more rubber on the ground. Its all positives in my eyes!! I’ve heard good things about the Roadsmart III’s. We’ll have to wait and see how flush I’m feeling when these wear out. Though the Dunlops aren’t exactly cheap!
Ain't no way in hell there's 35 degrees of wet lean available with 2" of slick on the sides of those tires. Dunlop have regular rebates. The last SET of RS III that I bought only cost $200 shipped. Probably about what the rear Mich tire goes for.
Depends on *your* definition of better. I would be scared to ride the Road 5 in the rain the way I do the RS3 due to lack of tread on the sides of the tire. If I didn't ride in the rain and was apt to ride really fast on sweepers like you might find on a race track, I'd probably find the Road 5 better. Since it is marketed as a sport touring tire, but designed as a sport tire, I think it's marketers were a little confused.
Great informative update! Another brilliantly put together vid. Really enjoy and appreciate your efforts Andy! Thankyou! I've been watching all I can about these tyres and haven't seen a bad report yet, so they'll be on my bike next.
Thanks Rob! I can’t imagine there IS a bad review out there! My swiss trip was an absolute blast, when it would have been a horror show with the tyres I’ve had up til now.
Well, after that rave review I'm pretty stoked to get onto my new-to-me FZ6 Fazer later this month^^ It's just had a set of these fitted, so my first ride on that bike will be with these tires.
I can't help thinking that the way tire tech has improved over the years, why isn't everybody scraping the bar ends of there handlebars. I managed to scrape the foot pegs of my GS thou in the eighties Michelin A48 front an M48 rears. Mind you, my current bike would really handle well on a set of FREE tires. "Please allow for sour grapes"
Haha! Maybe so! But then the true advance here is that they work just as well in the dry as a sports tyre, and just as well in the wet as a full on rain tyre. Both with long life. In the 80‘s you’d probably have been able to do the same, but only if you had 3 sets of wheels and a support truck! The real question is, where will they go next?!
Just installed the rear on my mt07. Coming from the PR3 after almost 20, 000 km, PR4 on the front. Excited on what's coming ahead after seeing the reviews. Im just not sure on the mileage as there has been mixed review on it.
I got a flat tire on my Tracer900 last weekend when I was in Norway. However, my fault since I didn´t change before I left. I know now that the Road 5 does last 19.000 km (11.800 miles) before it is totally worn out. Perhaps I will change the next set a bit sooner (16.000 km).
That’s an impressive distance! And good to know that they were useable up to that point. Looks like I might have a while left before i need to change then!!
Just bought a pair for my FZS1000 Gen 1,we will see.great video, wish I'd have seen it before my purchase,it may have helped me in my choice. It was a nightmare trying to decide.Btw, what is that lid you are wearing? I love the look.
Nothing wrong with a bit of sponsored faffery, I say! Free tires are the best kind, especially when they're top quality like Michelin. ;) Btw Road 5s are my next tires too after I'm done with leftover bits of stock rubber Dunlop Sportmax. I have an eye on them for a few months now. And since I have a slow right hand (that's what she said :D) they should last me a long while. I'm expecting 10k klicks or more.
Couldn't agree more! This was the best of both worlds, because they were free AND amazing!! What's not to love! Everybody wins! I'm at 12,000km on these now. Almost done. Maybe one more ride.
I'm having a set of Road 5's mounted on the ST13 next week, the old Pilot 4''s were great and long running, so I'm expecting great things from the 5's as well.
Great video Andy. Looking forward to hearing/seeing how long they last before wearing out completely, and also how much the grip/feeling changes as they near the wear limit.
Thanks mate! You and me both. Though early signs and stories from others seem very promising! Will probably try and put another vid together at about 10,000.
Very interesting! I thought about these tyres myself but as they were fairly new I didn't know what their longevity was like. Seem to be lasting well though. I'd be interested to see how long they actually last. Cheers Andy!
Just put one on my zx14r Kawasaki. Fantastic. Just what it needs. Stable a a tricycle at crawling speed. Great cranked over. Some slide but have 200 hp n tyres only done 400 kms. Better than pilot 3.
buddhastaxi666 I’m sitting at 225hp on my zx14r and I ride aggressively at times and I have been caught in the rain..I’m looking for a good all around tire , would you recommend the 5..?
@@inflatedmann get them. I corner with more lean and the bike is stable and handles at low speed like a bicycle, not a 250 kg machine. The tyres deserve all the praise they exceed expectations and take your riding into new level especially a heavyish powerful bike like the zx14r. I ride daily, to work etc. On shit southern West Aussie country roads that have horrible ancient corners, subsidence type potholes from massive 100 ton grain trucks, gravel on corners, fallen branches, slippery old bitumen, 45c heat, dust, kangaroos, parrots, magpies. The tyres give me confidence and brake brilliantly. I do not hang around cruise at high speed. They are first class gear.
buddhastaxi666 we have some 150 mph plus sweepers over here and these Q3 Dunlop sticks like glue with no movement.. but are horrible in the rain and in one season there toast..so that’s why I asked..great advice..looks like I’ll order a pair so when riding season is here I’m all good ..Thanks.
From the short time that I had the 01 SE's, I'd guesstimate that they'll last even less. They seemed to show signs of wear far sooner than the Michi's. But then I did do a trackday in the first 2 weeks of fitting them! Interesting to see how you get on. As an aside, my FZ1 was 210kg wet and the tyres just seemed to last and last. Maybe your right hand is the heaviest part?! 😜
@@MrB590 I love my new Roadsmart 3 tires. They're not as good in cold rain, i.e. at 2 celsius, but everywhere else they're perfect 👌. They fall into corners so effortlessly it's like they're hypersport tires.
You seem to be sitting on the fence with this review. I couldn't tell if you liked them or not. I've been using Road 4s for many years and get about 8,000 miles from the rear (CBF600N8), so with the extra weight and power you should be getting the same with the new development tyres. Tend to wear quickly at the end - one minute close to the "insurance wear line", next minute past it, so watch out.
Thanks Michael. That’s good to know. Yeah I think your prediction seems like it will be quite accurate. I’ll do another update at around 10,000km and we’ll get a better idea. Ps, I’ll try to be clearer in future!! 😁
i couldn't agree more i have them on my striple rs.done 5000 miles so far on them ,not even half way worn. amazing in the wet and as good in the dry as the super coarsers i had on from new which lasted 1500 miles and were shit in the wet.i will never buy anything else now.
There has to be a catch!! How are they so good in the dry, without wearing out quickly! Its astounding! I’m with you on sticking with these boots for the foreseeable future.
Hi I did try Michelin pilot road 3 put me off Michelin never slipped out but never pushed them either just felt vague in the dry . Thinking about anther go at Michelin as got a trip the black Forest in a couple of weeks and tyres on at the moment s20evo grippy but getting to low for a long trip
I know what you mean. I felt the same with the PR3‘s. But these ones have no such feeling. I felt confident pushing it in the mountains both dry and wet.
Thanks for the review, I'm considering them myself. The only problem I have is that I've currently clocked around 17.000 km on my Pilot road 3 (half of it with a passenger) and they're still good. They're not flat, still nicely round with a lot of thread to spare. Of course they behave worse than when they were new, but considering how long they lasted and how long they last for other people, it makes me wonder if I'm doing something wrong. Make I should call the police station and ask how many tickets I've got ^^ :P
WOW! If you got 17,000 out of the PR3's, I think you'll easy smash 20,000 on the Road 5's!! Doesn't sound like you're doing anything wrong, it sounds like we should all learn from you how to make the tyres last longer!!
@@AndyManCam Well to be honest I drive very defensively and rely a lot on engine braking. I guess I try to anticipate traffic and don't really brake that hard any more. Especially since last year because I got my rear tire punctured by a nail from the side (probably picked it up in a turn). They managed to plug it and haven't had any problem since but I'm more conservative with my turns. Also since I drive with a passenger the rear brake is more often used since it has become more powerful. I do find that they don't stick as good as they used to. Still impressed by these tires though.
That’s definitely the way to go. I do the same. Unless I’m really pushing hard I try to make it so I don’t need to use the brakes very much. All part of reading the road ahead eh!?
Great informative vid, just bought PR 5s. Great grip & braking in front. Trying to wear old rear tyre so I can fit 190 x 50 rear on for a matching set.
I'll agree with you but, i find the sides are a bit soft and they are tearing up faster than i hoped, not a prob, i'm a tad sillier than most, think i'll go power 5 , think the sides might last a bit better
I actually haven’t found the sides to suffer too badly, but then it’s possible that I’m not spending enough time over there! I am however obviously too enthusiastic into the bends, because my front has worn out on the shoulders faster than the rear!! I’ve also been considering trying out the Power 5‘s for my next set.
Very nice! I’ve got a fair few miles ahead of me yet then!
Finally...someone who actually gives a real world review of a tyre without re-hashing the media blurb or fully technical info. You've helped made my mind up for when th S1KR needs new tyres...which is very soon!!!!
Cheers Greg, very kind of you to say so. I’m certain you won’t regret your choice. Mine still going strong after 7000km.
Welcome along Whistler. Thanks for watching! I tried to get as much useful info in there as I could think of! 😁
After a few miles of riding, I promise you'll be even happier you chose them!
With you 100% on this - these tyres transformed my FZ1. Give fantastic confidence in the wet. Improve the feel of the bike. Best road tyres I have ever used in 25 years - a genuine milestone in tyres.
Amen to that! Easily the best I’ve ever had the pleasure of using.
Cheers! They’re really good, aren’t they! Seem to be almost immediately grippy even from cold. Can’t wait to get mine out on some twisties again!
I was looking for honest reviews of these tires & I’m happy to see you made this video.
Totally agree. It’s a simple idea, but just increases the breadth of the all-roundedness.
Hi, nice story, I'm surprised your tyre shop were willing to miss match.
Should have changed both??
Thank you!
I totally agree David. I think these will be firm favourites for many riders for many years to come!
Just bought a pair for my VFR750 🥳 sooo fantastic review- thanks for you clear sound and opinion 😉👍🏍💨
Many thanks Heine. I’m very happy to have helped. I wish you many happy miles with your new boots!
Been looking at the 5 as new boots for my BKing. You've just sold them on me. Good honest vid mate
Nice one Gary. Cheers. You’ll not be disappointed mate!
Thanks very much Mike. The opinions will always be honest mate. I’d rather have people trust me than sit atop a golden tower of shimmering lies!! 😁
Just put a set of these on my 1990 zzr1100 and I have to say the wet grip is amazing. I'm in Scotland and haven't had much in the way of dry weather lol. Great vid keep it up m8.
I know right! They were definitely the right choice when I was in Scotland too! WET!
Amazing how a tyre can change the experience, confidence and enjoyment.
I know right?! To think that we often buy cheaper tyres to save money, but in doing so essentially cripple our most prized posession!
Happy Days!
That IS a win! It does seem that they’ve bettered their own champion in every way. Impressive.
Have to say that I'm not really surprised. More weight means faster wear, so you definitely need the GT version for your bike.
Yeh i have the pirelli gt2s on my sport tourer lasted better than these road 5s
Just picked up a set yesterday for my fz1. Had road 4 on it when i picked it up a 2 years ago. First set of new tires on this bike, im looking forward to trying these tires. Ive mostly only heard great things about them.
I hope they live up to your expectations mate. Happy riding!
Got these on my 2014 Triumph Tiger 800 and very pleased with them.
It’s hard not to be happy with them, isn’t it!? 😬
I have a zx10r, bought it with worn michelin pilot 3s and got a nice fresh set of road 5s today! Cant wait to wear them in and se how they are. I did so much research for weeks. My dealer done great deal on them so im happy.
That video of yours was great mate! Thankyou.
Thanks Chris! Hope you enjoyed/are enjoying the 5's!
Yes, I LOVE my Road 5s, I run them on my Versys and the bike feels absolutely planted with them when leaned over, and the wet weather traction is incredible.
So we are firmly in agreement! Congrats Michelin!
I’ve just put a set of these on my R Nine T and done about 500 miles so far through pissing rain and dry 20C days and I’m massively impressed with them.
Sold! 😉👍
Definitely gonna be getting me a set for my MT07 once my stock rubber is done..... I think people underestimate how much difference a good set of shoes can make to a bikes performance.
Absolutely Alex. The best bike in the world would be a pig to ride with bad tyres. Plus the effect it has on your confidence when you can trust in your rubber is priceless (that’s what she said)
@@AndyManCam 😂👍🏻
Cheers Paul. My pleasure mate. Very happy to have been of some use!
Paul - I've got some M7rrs on my street triple. I do a few track days a year (pre-Covid-19) and scared the Road 5's were be too road oriented. How did they stack up?
lolcatmaroon the m7rr does well on turns, really well
lolcatmaroon sorry misread, the road 5, I've taken it only once to the hills, I didn't see any issues with it. It definitely feels different from the m7, but when they were new all it wanted to do was tight turns
Hey Mate I had Road 3's on my VFR 800 and after putting on Road 5's the bike feels like a totally animal so nimble and responsive and sticks like glue to the road with less wobbly feeling from the rear when cornering solid tyre
Cant wait to enjoy lots of Km's of fun with these! Best tyre i've ridden on so far too !
I totally agree! Just as I mentioned, the Road 3's seemed to move more than I liked. These however are awesome!
I like your review, and i have bought these tyres, but having driven trucks all over the EU, I also own a bike, i feel the biggest issue you missed was the fact you are riding on a totally different road surface in parts of the EU, I haven't noticed one pot hole yet on your route, i don't think you would be so relaxed riding over the snake pass, or Woodhead, or the cat and fiddle, and a lot of our roads in the uk are tar sprayed, tyres perform different on different road surfaces, but great review.
thanks BG. Check out my Scotland tour series. Some awful surfaces in there and i still love the tyres!!
Gonna buy myself a set next week. Thanks for your honest review!
My pleasure Jean. I honestly don't think that you'll be disappointed!
My name is Édouard Michelin..... and I approve this message.
Have a Michelin star Andy. :D
Merci beaucoup Monsieur Michelin. I’ve finally made it!
Thanks for the review! Just got my new Road 5's delivered today. Looking forward to ride them on my Kawasaki ZX10.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching. I hope you enjoy riding on them as much as I do!
My current 2 favourits are ROAD 5 or Pirelli Angel GT,
70/30 for the ROAD 5 tire.
Had these on my shopping list for ages and they will be on for next season for sure. Great review Andy 👍🏻
Thanks matey. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
You have just helped Michelin sell another set of tyres so giving you a set is really going to pay off for them :)
ain't that the truth
Their gamble really paid off! If I’d not liked them so much, the video could have been very different! Luckily I think they’re bleedin brilliant!
I will be buying a set of Road 5's after this review as well.
Just bought the second set for my Versys 650. A great tyre that I happily paid full price for.
@@G100666 Me too had them a year now and they still like new and hold the road like super glue :)
Cheers mate. Not surprised that you’re returning to the Road5 well for a third time! I certainly will be too!
Hi Andy, 05s fitted, impressed, they feel really good and I will be happy.
I'm sure you will Derek! I'm still loving mine!
I've gone for these on my Duke 790. Looking forward to trying them. Although I only really ride in the dry.
Me too if I can help it! 😂 But good to know that when you get caught out, you’ve got the grip in reserve!
That's awesome!! 23k is impressive. And on something with a bit of weight and millions of torques!
@@Concerned_citizen_aus Hope you’re still enjoying them!?
@@AndyManCam yeah mate. Still rocking them.
@@Concerned_citizen_aus Nice. Glad to hear it!
Yep. Great tyres. On second set now. 13000 kms from the front and 19000 from the rear. Suit my GSF1250 well. Had 2 sets of Metzler M7s previously.
Highly recommend the Road 5s..
Very good! Glad you've found your tyres mate!
Thanks for the update, Andy!
My pleasure! Thanks for coming along!
I WILL get to the helmet setup, I promise! Especially now that the opportunities for riding will be lessening with every day.
I'm a Motorcycle courier, riding a cbf 600... they're without a doubt the best Tyre I've ever used..
I also get over 15000 miles to a pair...
The mark of a Moto-courier is probably about as good as it gets! I'm really enjoying the Avon Spirit ST's right now too. Performance very similar, but two thirds the price.
Excellent review Mate. I think you have convinced me for my next set. Nice drone footage.
Thanks very much! I didn’t do anything mate, just shared how impressive these things are! Happy Road 5’ing!
Thanks Andy, great vid, I’ve switched now to the Rosd 5’s on my MultiStrada 1260s, awesome tyres and I too would highly recommend them..
Good choice! Happy to help!
Just had a set fitted, i did 200km from the moment they were fitted and obviously gotta go easy with new tires bit even so these were very confident tires
I’m not surprised. I had very much the same feeling.
great video Andy, i’m getting a set after watching this 👍
Thanks Chris. You'll not regret it. Best rubber I've ever used.
I love this review!!! Great work
Thanks very much! Cheers for watching!
Looks like I’ll be in Hamburg late next summer. Planning any ride outs? Tours? Etc? Lol! Any place I can ship my Tracer to and store?
I live in New Mexico. Little rain. Do you think I'd be better off with the Dunlop Roadsmart III's for my Tracer 900? They seem...more like a slick...perhaps better in dry conditions. I want traction under max acceleration in first gear.
Ok. I have brand new tires (2nd hand moto delivered with these).. And I will certainly change for the Road 5. And you're right this road in Black Forrest is amazing (and wet as well)...
A good choice I would say! Pointless having a new bike if you can't enjoy riding it in all weather!!
Damn, excellent quality content mate.
I am in the very definition of 1st world problems, this tire or the Angle ST II... Such a struggle haha
Haha! Tough choice. I’ve not tried the Angel, but it would be hard pressed to pull me away from these.
Dude!! How the hell have you been.. I absolutely enjoyed your reviews and thank you!! Enjoyed ur verbiage and choice of words! I was on the fence about these tires and with your review I have decided to get a set! Thx again!
Thanks mate! Very happy to hear that you're happy! But then there was no doubt with these tyres. Possibly the best yet!
I put them on my aprilia tuono last summer. Amazng tyres, grip and no wear.
Im not surprised mate! I think they’re perfect!
Where I live the Road 5 and RS3 cost the same, which begs the question - which are better if the price is not a factor?
Depends on *your* definition of better. I would be scared to ride the Road 5 in the rain the way I do the RS3 due to lack of tread on the sides of the tire.
If I didn't ride in the rain and was apt to ride really fast on sweepers like you might find on a race track, I'd probably find the Road 5 better.
Since it is marketed as a sport touring tire, but designed as a sport tire, I think it's marketers were a little confused.
I can concur the Road 5s on my ZZR after 4000 miles are still holding up well and not squaring at all
Glad to hear it mate. I’m still on the same set!
Great unbiased review.
Cheers Doug. I do my best!!
Great review I've ordered a set for my ZZR1400
Cheers Edward. You'll not be disappointed!
great vid - cant wait to get a set on my MT09
Thanks again mate. Enjoy the new rubber!
This is what I needed to hear. Thank you
My pleasure! Fantabulous tyres!
I can second Andy's talking wizardry! I have these on my KTM 1290 Super Duper Duke GT, and they're the muts nuts.
Cheers Shaun. Good for people to know that I’m not just a raving lunatic!
@@AndyManCam oh that goes without saying lol😂
Dude I'm not sure we need to know about your gushing finish! 😂
Good review though I love the flashback scene.
Haha! OK, I'll keep the gushing to a minimum in the future! Cheers!
Always been a fan of Michelin products.
Hard not to be when the results are so positive. 👍🏻
Well, after that rave review I'm pretty stoked to get onto my new-to-me FZ6 Fazer later this month^^ It's just had a set of these fitted, so my first ride on that bike will be with these tires.
Very nice! Enjoy the new machine mate!
Coming from the PR3 after almost
20, 000 km, PR4 on the front. Excited on what's coming ahead after seeing the reviews. Im just not sure on the mileage as there has been mixed review on it.
Well I'm at about 15,000km and I think i've got another 1-2000 left in them. SO I'm very impressed.
Free tires are the best kind, especially when they're top quality like Michelin. ;)
Btw Road 5s are my next tires too after I'm done with leftover bits of stock rubber Dunlop Sportmax.
Cool. I’m sure you’ll not be disappointed. Seems they have all the wet performance of the 4, but with dry performance of a sports tyre. Happy trails!
Totally get that. When something is ‘too new’ I sometimes wait to see how it pans out first! They’re lasting very well, and I’m not being gentle! 😆
I have always been a big Bridgestone fan, but after seeing nothing but positive reviews about these tyres, I’ve just put some on my S1000XR.
You’ve got to try them to believe it. Tyre voodoo is real!!
11:47 Todesfelde, the only two good corners north of Hamburg 😅
Love these tyres aswell! Like your’e work to keep it up!
You, me and everybody who’s tried them it seems! Great work from Michelin! Thanks Rutger!
Just put one on my zx14r Kawasaki. Fantastic. Just what it needs. Stable a a tricycle at crawling speed. Great cranked over. Some slide but have 200 hp n tyres only done 400 kms. Better than pilot 3.
No surprises there. They've done great work with this rubber. I've not yet felt mine break traction. Long may that feeling continue!! :D
buddhastaxi666 I’m sitting at 225hp on my zx14r and I ride aggressively at times and I have been caught in the rain..I’m looking for a good all around tire , would you recommend the 5..?
@@inflatedmann They have improved my riding and the bike. We go fast out here as well n the tyres are firstclss
You should try the Metzeler Roadtec 01 after this and compare and see which is actually the best..
I’d be happy to. We’ll have to see what the market is like when these finally wear out!!
@@AndyManCam Would love for you to try the Angel GT II !
I had these on my thundercat great tyre but didnt last as long as i liked for my 211kg wet bike , so will be trying out the metzeler roadtec 01 se
Try the Roadsmart 3. Slightly worse wet grip, but better dry grip, 30% more longevity and cheaper.
@@FlameHazeist I, ll stick with road 5
Very nice review, thank you.. will get one for my mini-BKing
Thanks TW. I am certain you’ll be happy with the new rubber!
Bravo mate...Bravo.
Cheers very much!
i couldn't agree more i have them on my striple rs.done 5000 miles so far on them ,not even half way worn. amazing in the wet and as good in the dry as the super coarsers i had on from new which lasted 1500 miles and were shit in the wet.i will never buy anything else now.
Great review, seem like worthwhile tyres.
Thanks! They are easily the best tyres I've had so far!
