    Michelin sent me a set of Road 5 Sport Touring tyres in 190/55/17 & 120/70/17 sizes for my 2006 Yamaha FZ1N. They lasted for 2 full seasons of touring and a total of over 12,000km.
    Here's a round up of how I found the tyres overall.

    In case Michelin are reading this, I bought a set of Road5s on the strength of Andy's review! They have now done 3500 miles on the MT10 on various tours and I have to say, they are the best road tyre I think I've ever had! (and I've been riding 30 years). On a recent tour it was at least as "fast" as the Rosso3s and S21s on other bikes, and on other very wet tours, work better than any other tyre I've ever had in the wet. Super confidence inspiring and amazing wear (I usually get less than 3000 miles out of a road rear tyre, so these are into unknown amazing territory!!). They are not as sharp in profile as they were new, but are still very good, and as I said, usually, my tyres are done by this mileage. I'm expecting probably the same mileage again before they will need replacing. Can't recommend highly enough. Amazing tyres!!! :) (Michelin, send Andy another set, he must have made you loads of new/extra sales! ;) :) :D )

      @@alexanderswander8176 Well, I've done 5000 miles on them so far, and they look like they might even be only half worn. Usually, I don't get much more than 3000 out of a set, so these are already record breaking for me! :) (like it seems they were for Andy). I'd recommend these over pretty much everything else out there! :) (it will be interesting to see how Andy's new Avon Spirit STs turn out, and the new Bridgestone T32....)

      @@AndyManCam Yeah I see why they charge double the price now, because the tires last double the km. I thought about the dunlops and pirellis but for the price that it costs for someone to unmount, mount, and balance new tires I guess its better to spend the extra cash and get the better tires

    As I prepare to embark on my 8-10K mile (15000km) journey on a Ducati Hypermotard, I am seriously searching for a tire that will complete the journey without me needing to replace before I make it back to California. Looks like the Road 6 will be ordered and installed in a few weeks. Thanks for the wonderful review. I hope that I will be able to document half as well as you.

    Just done 17500 miles on my road pilot 4, its a 100 mile motorway commute to work, it has worn out on the centre with them just being above the wear bar, with winter coming up I've decided to put a set of road pilot 5 on there, after looking at this review I'm glad I made the choice, let's see how long these last....

    I got 11.000 km out of my set. Marvellous performance from day 1 to the last. Great grip and neutral handling. Tread wear was not noticable towards the end. If it wasn't for the steep price i would have gotten another pair.

    I had PR4s on my Versys, they worked marvelously on wet and pretty decent on dry. Then changed my front to Road 5 but sold the bike before I had time to seriously form an opinion and buy the rear as well. For what I gathered on couple of hundred kms on that front it was a better tyre on the dry but still a bit squirmy, and in the wet the front Road 5 was as good if not better than the old PR4. The main thing here is the longevity which is unprecedented and wet grip which is one of the best.
    Now, I could put them on my GS when I destroy these Dunlop Trailsmart but I don't think I will. I'd like a bit fire road sand slide action so I think I'll try Dunlop Trailmax Mission, heard only positive things about them, especially longevity and road performance.
    Rant complete, great review Andy as always! Cheers!

    forgot add, great in wet or dry, loads of miles too ! didn't even square off after an 800 mile motorway/peage blast from uk to millau two up full luggage on my zzz 1400, a spirited ride to stop the boredom ! after two tours in Europe and 12,000 miles, not kilometres, I finally killed them and have changed them for the same again, not bad miles when you consider the weight and torque of the big zzr ! oh and about £100 cheaper than the Road 5 ...... ;)) good vid Andy

    I use the PR5s on my Honda Deauville which I use for commuting. The tyres, as you say, are just brilliant. I think the PR4s had marginally more grip on wet white lines. As to longevity, I get about 29,000km from the front and 24,000km from the rear, the Deauville isn't particularly quick 😀. As they are used only for commuting, they do square off quite a lot and it is quite noticeable towards the end of their life. They are worth every penny!
    I'll be putting them on my FJR once the factory fitted Bridgestones have worn out.
    If I were you and with the amount of riding in the rain we do in Europe, I'd put PR5s on again.

    Enjoyed that amc. I have 10k km on my Strom1000, and have had exactly the same experience as you. I've ridden loooong north american highway and curvy, rain, over 40C to 0C and never a shimmy, slip or adrenal squeezing moment have I had. There is no siginificant squaring - none that impacts the cornering yet. Judging by the wear, it looks like I'll get another 6000 on them. It is an outlay, but I have to say that not only are they the best tyres I've ridden on, they're also very good value for money over the life time. But best of all they stick like glue. My other bike, the Z900RS came with Dunlop Sportmax GPRs - and they are nervous and skitish in anything under 20C, frequently lighting up the abs and tc. I'll be replacing those asap with road 5s. Cheers.

    Andy,. I'm about to get an H-D Iron 883, and as an auto mechanic along with being a first generation German/American, I've learned to recognize real quality. These road 5's were emphatically recommended to me. Loved your "no baloney" review of these tires. The fact that you were aggressively digging into the tires as you rode on them to prove the point of "good as new even when worn"! Keep up the great content quality, it makes a BIG difference! I had road 2 2ct back in 2011 and I kept buying them. 17,000 miles on the back and 23,000 miles on the front. I rode all weather. It’s about being smooth and not hammering on the brakes. I sold my bike in 2013 (K1200S) and I’m buying a new BMW next year. I’ll definitely try the new road 5s.

      Totally agree. I think the fact that after nearly 7000 km on my new bike, that I still haven't seen the traction control light, shows that I'm doing something right with the smoothness! The Road 5's won't disappoint. I'm also trying out the Avon Spirit ST's right now and so far very pleasantly surprised.

    I think it’s a ploy by the manufacturers to put less rubber on the front now. I have the Road 5’s on my Z1000SX and truly loved them. I fitted the R5’s at 4044 and currently I am at 12775. My tyres pretty much look like yours Andy. The tyres are still legal (ish) and I’m planning on changing them this coming week. I would like to stay with the R5’s but I had the Pirelli Angel GT’s on a previous SX and got over 8000 miles from them, so I might try the Pirelli Angel GT 2’s next. I hate the look of the Roadtec 01’s cause as we all know, they have to look nice on the bike. I apologise to the folk that like them. They are meant to be exceptional tyres.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was the same for me. I think they must be using softer compounds in the fronts nowadays for more grip. Apparently the new Road 6 has dual compound on the front, so they might be trying to combat that. I also see it as a sign that I'm not using the throttle TOO much and getting good life out of the rear. Rather than just constantly toasting the back tyres like I used to when I was younger!! 🤣

    I use mostly pirelli stradas because I'm utterly tight and they are cheap. they can last from 4-5k miles up to 8k depending on a bike, style of riding and type of routes. when I rode FZ6 when I was a newbie, I took it for a couple of Alpine trips and was plonking around on the passes, they lasted 8k miles easily and that's back if I remember correctly. Now, when I gained a bit of experience, changed bike for an MT09, started pushing it a bit more and use it solely on the mountain roads (I started carrying the bike with me rather than riding stupid distances to places) the tyres last me maybe 4k on the back and 6k on the front XD AND I'm not a fast raider at all, I'm only entry level intermediate I'd say. I think an experienced, fast rider would eat them up in half the time. What I'm getting at it's very hard to judge how long a tyre will last. Same model can do double the mileage in different hands ;)

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree. One rider can toast a rear in seconds, another can gently run it for tens of thousands of miles! Most important is to find something that works for you and your style. Sounds like you’ve nailed it.

    I’ve seen nothing but stellar reviews on these tires. Totally sold on them for the dry / wet grip, their longevity and sense of control, road feedback and confidence they provide. The only question I have remaining is… would they perform favourably on what we call fire route roads (gravel roads in cottage country) on as well secondary roads that are flattened compressed gravel here in Canada 🇨🇦? I have a 2021 BMW R1250GS and would be riding mainly on paved surface but at times would like to go on gravel roads to access scenic compositions in landscape to paint 🎨 and canoe.

My Street Triple came with a set of Pirelli Angel GT and while they're good, I can't wait to replace them with a good set of PR5s when they wear out (Could still be a while yet though! as they've still got about 2.5mm of wear left in them) Sure the PR5s are quite costly but I can't justify cheaping out on the contact surface between my bike and the road.

    Regarding 7:00 - Yikes! As well as stupidly leaning into the oncoming traffic while riding on the centerline, traffic paint does *not* have the same traction as bare asphalt! I learned this the hard way on a twisty mountain road, when the front tire let go on the centerline paint, and I low-sided into the side of the mountain. The road was dry, and the traffic paint was only a year old.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah he had no real excuse there. You can see who's coming into the corner from miles before it! In his defence (weakly) the white lines here are potentially MORE grippy than the asphalt itself! It's like glittery sandpaper! Important that I never forget that when i'm no longer riding in Germany. Of course German white lines are IMPOSSIBLE to see in the rain, so that's another side of the situation!

    I made 20k km on Pilot Road 4 and replaced them with Road 5. I have no idea if easier leaning and more confidence comes from the improved tread and/or compound or just because I replaced a little bit square tires with a brand new, but after 1 month and 4k km I must admit the feelings are that they perform better and rather won't last longer than PR4 (I think due to softer compound? Probably Road 5 GT would stay on my wheels as long as PR4, we will see).

    Hi Andy, I've put over 17,000 on my PR5s that I fitted to my Ninja 1000. I do a lot of freeway kms (sadly) but overall these have been excellent tyres. I do have some scalloping, but I've since adjusted the suspension which I think contributed to that (increased the preload and stiffened the rebound) and it seems to have stopped the scalloping getting worse (maybe 2000-3000 since I've adjusted it). In all weathers they've been excellent. I am fairly confident that I could get another 10,000km from them, unless I do a couple of longer trips mixed into my commuting. I previously had a rear PR3 last over 25,000 on my VFR.

    Ive just taken a set of these off my Crosstourer. I agree, probably the best tyres for feel and performance in the wet ive ever had. Like you they got a real test last year in Scotland where they were rock solid. However, its not all good for me, at around 4500 miles they were really badly squared off and the tread had become "stepped" (It may be called feathering?) on the sides making them feel quite weird when cornering. Though not down to the wear indicators at 5400 miles i decided they had to go. What i will add is that the Crosstourer is a heavy bike, the rear is only a 150 and due to the sizes my bike requires the Trail version. I do keep an eye on my pressures and Ive had 11000 miles on a set of Anakee 3s. Just fitted Pirellis Scorpion Trail 2s.

    Mate, I really like your style and thanks for the review... I've hit the thumbs up for ya too.
    One thing about your nomenclature though Bro; you keep saying "profile" when you actually mean CROSS SECTION... "Profile" for want of a better definition, means the distance between the rim and the road... Tyre manufacturers refer to that in the second set of numbers of the tyres dimensions... as a percentage of the tyres width.
    For example the "50" in "200/50 ZR17" is the "profile" of the tyre... as a percentage of the width of the tyre ie. 50% of 200 millimetres (the width of the tyre) which of course means there is 100mm of rubber between the aluminium of the rim and the asphalt of the road.
    Thanks again for the video... great work.
    Warm Regards, Alan Squires.

    • @AndyManCam
      @AndyManCam  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Alan. Happy to help. With regards to profile, I’d say we’re both right. Yes technically the profile is the height of the tyre from the rim. Also referred to, in connection with the width, as the aspect ratio. But the height of the tyre coupled with the width has a lot to do with the shape of cross section of the tyre when looked at, you guessed it, in profile. A 190/55 has a taller and therefore more triangular profile than a 190/50. It has to be so, because curve of the tyre is completely changed by the extra height but with the same width.

    • @alans1964
      @alans1964 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AndyManCam Trust me Andy It's "cross section" mate... not profile. You look at the profile viewing the tyre from the side.

      Dunlop disagrees with you mate. Well, doesn’t disagree with you, but doesntz disagree with me. Check out this page about their Sportsmart TT. Scroll down and find them talking about the the revised dynamic front profile. www.dunlop.eu/en_gb/motorcycle/tires/sportsmart-tt--ssmart-tt.html I’m certain I’ve read marketing blurb from other manufacturers using the same terminology to refer to the shape of the tyre. I’m fine with the fact that it’s also known as cross-section, but I don’t think anybody has any problems knowing what I’m talking about when i say profile. A seat is also called a saddle, a triple clamp is also called a yoke, a brake disc is also called a rotor….

    • @alans1964

      English is poor. Another example is; some QANTAS publications cites QANTAS as "Qantas", which is incorrect as

      Sorry Alan. That makes no sense mate. If a tyre manufacturer uses certain terminology to describe their products, i think it can be assumed that they know what they’re talking about. After all, it’s all they do. If a doctor told me it would be safe to stick my head in a fire, then maybe I’d trust the expert. Though that also wouldn’t happen as their only job is to protect my health. You didn’t just take things out of context, you blew it out of the water and it’s lying on the bank gasping for air! Maybe just let it go. I’m going to keep saying profile and everybody is still going to know what I’m talking about.

    loved these tires as well, surely an improvement from the pilot road 4's which were ok. Unfortunately did not have the chance to test them properly but up to the 5k km's they were great, sportier than the pilot road 4s but not as sporty as the pirelli diablo rosso's III which I had before them. No regrets
