Why put a road only tire on an adventure bike? 🙋🏼♀️ I'll answer that! From the looks of most ADV bikes I see out in the road, you can tell that a pretty good percentage never leave the pavement. I purchased a 2021 Tenere 750 for a road trip through Central and South America, but due to the pandemic I am delaying my trip about two years, give or take a few months. Meanwhile my T7 is being used as a commuter bike with 97% of the time being on pavement. And about 85% of that on freeways. For the time being I do not need a 50/50/ 70/30, or even a 80/20 tire. Specially with winter coming and I will be riding my bike rain or shine. I am looking for the best cold weather and rain tires I can find for Rosie (my bike - yes I name my bikes). It seems that everyone everywhere who do videos or ride reviews about ADV bike tires assume that everyone who has an ADV have one because they want to do off roading as well. Some people buy a bike, such as a 1250GS for the look and let's face it, even though it is an ADV bike it makes for a great road touring bike as well. I guess that my search for the best rain tires for my ADV will continue. There are some amazing tires such as the Pilot 4 tires, but they don't make them in si es that will fit mine bike. Someone should make a review and test of this class of tires.
I had a pilot road 4 on my FJR1300. Loved it so much I replaced it with a pilot road 5. That has now done 15,000 kilometres and I'm about to fit a pilot road 5GT Fantastic tyres
Damn, looking for tire reviews expecting some guy in his garage to tell me which tires he can drag his knees on in the rain. And I got some Casey Neistat level production value and very detailed info to boot. Kudos, subscribed!
Enjoying the dose of honesty! Your videos are well put together, and providing really good info. Its great to hear from Fortnine giving some real world info for us Canadians that ride in Canadian conditions. Thanks!
For touring on my RSTD ... I use the Michelin Commander II for the rear tire ... the current tire has 14.5k miles on it, isn't squared and has all water channels in play.
Good call on the Michelin, having just recently changed from BT O23's I can say the difference is night and Day especially with our UK weather. Good job.
pilot road 4s where my 1nd set on the cbr650f and have been loving them for 12,000km so far although they are now showing some flattening along the centre. on rain, they are incredible
I ride around 6000km a year, the Michelin tires cost me around 8€ a month. I can really recommend them, i ride from march to december and only slipped once when acceleration aggressively in the rain on a very cold day and after one year, 6000km, they still look like new. Bike nc 700x, heavy, no problem.
My previous tires on my Honda Pan European were Road Pilot 3s. Very good and got about 27,000ks from them. Recently replaced them with a pair of Road Pilot 4 GTs. The heavier side walls of the GT version make a big difference to the handling on such a heavy bike. I highly recommend them and cheaper than the Continental and Metzler equivalent. Good video; not the usual US rubbish.
Excellent review. Full of good info. I use the Pilot Road 4 GT because I want the mileage and I don't want to trade off any grip in the wet. After running this tyre on the rear, I just put a Pilot road 4 GT also on the front this week....lets see. I've used pilot road 3 and 2 in the past and I've even tried the Avon Storm and the bridgestone BT020s. I feel more confident on the Michellins.
well ive got the pilot road 4 and are highly impressed. it has better ride comfort and feels like a magnet sticking to road in rain / heavy rain. i ride a aprilia shiver 750 and this is my second rear tyre being another pilot 4 as the 1st one easily gave me 9562kms. I was not gentle on 1st tyre speeding round everywhere. Now suitably impressed with the pilot ive gone and shod both front and rear in them, and traveled nearly 8500kms. cant fault the tyre, exept if centre was just a bit more harder could be the only room for improvement.
Great review. I sincerely appreciate the detail and thoughtfulness, and have shoed my 2014 VStrom 1000 with the Pilot Roads. 500 miles in, I'm impressed. An excellent tire, with great high-speed stability. Thanks!
I randomly tumbled upon one of your videos of a helmet review and now I can't stop watching all of them! your channel is awesome especialy the visiting videos! keep up, I'm enjoying watching this! got yourself a new sub ;)
I agree about Angel GT's, thats what I felt after switching from Bridgestone T30evo. More sportines, easier to keep the line in the corners, better feel. And should be better mileage as well.
True. You need more contact surface on the edges. The Perelli is probably your best choice, out of these tires. But why sacrifice any of your "dry road grip" so that you can go fast in the rain ? 🌧🏍💨 Best advice; Just buy a good set of "Sport Tires" and slow down in the rain.
I love the Heidenau Scouts. Ran the back for 12,000 miles, and the front for 17,000 miles (and still going). Great 80-20 tire with a continuous bead on the rear so you don get shaken to death on the pavement. They also have run flat capability, so much to the point that I barely noticed it when I picked up a puncture.. Ran them through North, Central and South America and was very happy with their versatility. Pretty much everyone I ran into that had a BMW 1200 GS were running these tires.
Hey Ryan, you are very eloquent and your presentation is top notch. It's nice to get instructions in a descriptive narrative. Never once you used the word 'cool' to describe terms which are best expressed with the right adjectives and nouns. Thank you. My choice: Metzeler.
You're reviews are well done. Opinion based backed by factual information presented with good quirky humor. Thank you. Subscribed. Can you do a review on slip-ons and pros and cons of shorties or straight pipes with or without air fuel management.
Yet another informative vid from FortNine. I have a newly purchased FJR arriving soon which I’ll probably spoon on a set of Pilot Road 4’s. Lots of positive reviews on that tire. Currently I have Roadsmarts on my ZRX12 but I can attest to the Battlax BT series in the wet as I rode about 25 miles to a friends house in a pouring monsoon on a set. Crossing two bridges! Never gave me a reason to doubt them. Kinda ironic a MC tire company would call its system EMS. In my neck of the woods that’s Emergency Medical Services. As a multi bike owner I’ll probably stick with the Dunlop Qualifiers on my Blackbird. Outstanding dry weather grip and in inclement weather it’ll prolly be the FJR on the road anyway. Thanks again for a well done review.
Hi Ryan. Just have to pull you on the Angel ST's that you said are "crap"! They are superb tyres that are good at everything & last forever, even when abused on a ZZR1200. In my humble opinion of course!.... ;)
I rode on both the bridgestone 023 and currently the michelin pilot road 4. Road both through heavy rain on 400+ mile trips and I can tell you that the pilot road 4 is so much better. In the dry the bridgestone 023 is better of course but if you ride over 8000miles a year like I do in any conditions, having the pilot road 4 is a nice peace of mind when it does start pouring. PR4 also handles the cold streets down to 20F better than the bridgestones 023.
I have the Pilot Road 4 on my Street Triple. A lot of folks on the Triumph forum swear by them, but just as many are fans of the Angel GT. I might try those next time.
I'd have the Angel GT for a year now. Overall a great tire. I primary use my FZ6 for daily commuting rain or shine, but I do like to get somewhat aggressive in the corners on a dry day. The tire has performed great and I would buy it again. However, I did see a lot more center wear. Since 90% of my riding is on the center, fully upright, I did expect this a bit, just not so quickly.
Tyre technology made easy to understand! Thank you for your effort in putting this video together and sharing that knowledge with us. Great Video, Well Done!!!!!
One I can really recommend on the sportier spectrum of the sport-touring category is the Bridgestone Battlax T30. I had them on my BMW and leaned them to the edge on corners with confidence.
excellent presentation on your favorite sport bike tires. that with your summary I'm convinced that the Michelin pilot4 is the tire best suited to my needs. Yamaha 2015 fzo7. thanks for your help !
good review ryan. i chose the michelin pilot road 3 over the 4 as they have a sticker compound. absolutely awesome in the wet and dry for long and short adventures
I live in Australia with warm weather but we do get monsoon rains at times. I have a ZX14, no traction control or ABS. I have Bridgestone BT23 front and rear. The front has been rock solid from day 1 but the rear was shocking. 150Kw is a heap of power to hold but it spins up, slipped on down shift and I was really questioning my choice. After about 700Km, suddenly stabilised and it has been brilliant.
You lack the two things in the thumbnail that could give you credibility, dirt on your face and a big bushy beard, but after youtube kept recommending your videos countless times i decided to give it a look and here I am now, subscribed... Metz it is, thanks!
Yes, thank you. I watched this video after watching that first. I love the way you explain. Well all the tires you have shown are priced quite high ( at least in India). I am looking in the range of $100
My Multistrada GT obviously came with the Pirelli Angel GT, agreed that it is a great super sticky tire but i did not like the wet handling. Bought the Pilot Road 4 GT after and am absolutely happy, rode through a couple of heavy down poor's (standing water on highway) and the bike felt planted AF. Mine last about 12500 km on the rear, would always buy them again.
Are attention spans so short in the modern world as to require camera angle changes every 3.5 seconds?? Sad. Great stuff. Your channel is awesome! Thanks.
Really likes this channel! But My choice will be Dunlop Roadsmart 3 or Pirelli Scorpion trail 2. I am currently on the Pirellis as I ride on dirt time to time. Keep up the good work ✌️
Just got the RP4's for my R6, they seem a solid tyre. Going to the Isle of Man tomorrow so a little nervous on how they will hold up as will be riding a lot harder. Pls give peace of mind lol. Great vids keep it up! Regards Tim, U.K.
I have Z8's on my Kawasaki Versys 650 for 6000km. Braking and stability in the rain is very good. Short warm-up time. Pilot road 4 is a perfect everyday tire. Safe but not sporty. My next set on the Versys will probably be Angel GTII or Roadtec 01.
650 burgman runs battlax also have a k1600 BMW running the pilot both are great tires. As far as rain goes the battlax has never let me down in the rain on this bike. Here in fl we get rain Big Rain! Both tires are great in those not so sunny times.
you probably needed them mate the weather was rubbish on the Friday and not much better on Saturday hope you got back safe. I watched the telecast from a warm lounge room even though my bikes running pilot 4 s they stayed in the garage without turning a wheel
Why? Some people including myself will put street only tires on their GSA bikes after Labor Day weekend after camping season and put the mixed tires on at around Memorial Day weekend i.e. when camping/good off road weather hits. That's why. Keep up the great work sir!
Good description with real life what's and whys. ThanksThere is a problem with no tread in the very middle. I had a Metzeler Z8 and loved it but while I get to within a few mm of the edge I do a bit of straight line running as well. I had just legal tread as close as tread the tread goes to the middle and the steel just started to show, very scary.
I drag knee with the Pirelli GT 2s. But they suck with feedback, like they feel like wood. Don’t set them to the 36/42. Set it to 29/34 on a sport bike. They do last a long time (7k miles) and are just ok in the wet. I’m on my second set in a year
You are rapidly become a trusted source. That being said, any suggestions for a CA year round ST1100 rider? 12- 15,000 miles year. Good budget tire vs the sky is the limit.
Angel GT ... 20,000 Km on it last summer... so so in rain... cornering very good ... confort very bad (the tire is like a rock) , riding a Kawa Ninja 1000. Over all, I think they are the best choice for sport touring and they are better if you put weight on it (lie a backseat)... i did buy a second pair for this summer
I'm looking at getting two tires for the Niagara region in Ontario, I riding two up and want to rid my stock tires of looking for something for riding in the rain and long distance I'm a new season rider for 3 yrs. I hear commander 3 is what many prefer I'm not worried about the cost for the best for my bike and wifey. Much appreciated
Imformative.. Thank you.. Good to see some-one who is also a realist. Only question is how do they handle "HOT" roads. Average Daily temp where I live is 35 degrees C and road temp can get up to nearly 80 degrees..
bridgestone 23 is the one i like in rainy Scotland it suits my driving and had nothing to do with price but will give the dearer one a go next time. bike 2001 ZR-7S from new
Just discovered your channel...well done...subscribed.....next set on my R12R '16 will be PR4's...Z8's came on the bike....running a plug in the rear Z8...not happy about that...Keeping a eye on the tire pressure monitor...Z8 perform well but PR4 are next.
Hey Ryan, just something you might want to know. In very hot temperatures (90 degrees F and above) the Michelin tires have a tendency to be kind of "greasy" when pushing harder cornering while the Bridgestone tires seem to handle the heat better. I know y'all up where you are don't face the higher temps as much but it's something that you might want to consider in future evaluations. Oh and the Metzler and Continental tires sort of split the difference with the Metzler being a bit mor "grippy". I love your reviews just thought I'd chime in and let you know about riding in the "heartlands" of the U.S. Thanks !!!
If your bike has the tire sizes for them, the Michelin Commander II will last a lot longer than the Michelin Pilot Road 4, while giving up some wet and cornering traction. I am a Michelin guy for motorcycle tires and a Pirelli guy for quiet, higher speed rated car tires that might last 70,000 miles.
+bdicta1 Thanks! And yes, I know how you feel. I normally swap my tires before they're totally bald just because I'm antsy to try something new haha. ~RyanF9
Always interesting to hear review...but, i was expecting that you have the T30 there, i've it on my 600rr (i'm one of those who takes his sport bike touring) and i love it, they last and the really grip!
I run the Michelin PR4 GT on my KTM 1290 Super Adventure. You ask in you video, "why would someone run these tires on a Adventure Tour" ? Well the reason is, I am looking for a bike that holds 7+ gallons of fuel, weighs less than 600lbs fueled, has storage to haul my stuff while traveling, long suspension travel to soak up some of the pot hole "paved" back roads and then most of all, a bike that will carry my 6'8" 345lb frame around comfortably. So, I put the PR4's on my Adventure Tour for the mileage and better handling vs the stock dual sport tire. I have a dirt bike, so there was no need to keep the poor handling dual sport tires on this great touring machine.
Already a little out of date. Metzler's got the 01 now, that improves on the Z8. I think you missed a great one here though. I've been running the Conti Road Attack II Evos and they are simply amazing. Wet, cold, hot, dry, it don't matter. Run them out to the edge and they inspire confidence in any condition. Vids available showing them run hard on tracks too. They also have a nice feature of not requiring a break-in period and are about 10% cheaper than their competitors. I have a natural curiosity to try different brands, but after finding the Contis, I'm afraid I would only be let down. I can't imagine a tire performing any better for my style of riding.
I can get a Pilot 4 from Dennis Kirk for $160-180..210? You`re getting ripped off..Dennis Kirk is the way to go..Great deals and they have a great service department..Next day service.
Nice review. Thank you. I had already made up my mind about the PR-4s. I had such a great experience with my previous bike's PR3's that I was sold for the next set. Also, they look better on my "hybrid" bike Kawasaki Versys.
to respond to your "why would you put a street only tire on an adventure bike?" --> It's quite simple....I'm quite a tall rider and thus have few bikes I fell really comfortable on. The V-Strom 1000 is one of them, which is what I ended up buying. I love the ergonomics and the V-Twin sound.....however....my friends ride on faster, smaller, lighter, sportier bikes....along the lines of Triumph Tiger Sport 1050 and Triumph Street Triple R and a GSR600.....so for me it makes more sense to buy a set of good tires and will provide me with the grip to at least keep up with them....rather than buying a sportier smaller bike that will keep up but don't feel comfy on..... hence....street tires on my semi-enduro.....although i wonder.....who really takes a V-Strom 1000 off-road anyways? My 08 seems a bit too bulky for that....
I want some Michelin’s for my GSXS1000! I like the Dunlop’s on them but they burn up to quick and they suck on wet! But they do for some unreal dry grip! But I’m thinking the new Michelin’s will feel just as good every where just from being new if not better!
Have the bt23 on my honda vfr for touring and the occasional high speed riding, already lasts more than 15000km and never had any frightening moments with it on dry or in the wet. Have the Michelins on my ktm 990sm and it's a bit stickier, but nothing that I will need with my current riding skills :) They do wear down way quicker than the bridgestones, but that would be the bikes torque difference as well i guess. Both good options in my opinion.
I'm actually really impressed, I've done about 2000km so far on the set (sun, rain, mud, gravel and even light snow) and I haven't noticed any major difference between these and the tires that cost twice as much. I might shell out a few more shekels for a better front tire just for my own piece of mind. how ever I think I found my new go to rear. one thing I've noticed is the front sits on the rim super wide, I matched the dementions but definitely a noticeable difference in the flick ability of the bike.
I have the PR4 on my 2010 vfr1200 and only got about 4,000 miles out of them. great tire, feels great on wet or dry, best tire I've had, just think they haven't lasted long cause the vfr weighs in right at 1,000 pounds....
awesome reviews, I'm actually going to try Angel Gt, 2015 r1 stock battlax r10 went super fast, tired q3 now, 3k miles and belts are showing, hopefully I get little more miles from Angels, plus I dig the looks.

Just got the RP4's for my R6, they seem a solid tyre. Going to the Isle of Man tomorrow so a little nervous on how they will hold up as will be riding a lot harder. Pls give peace of mind lol. Great vids keep it up! Regards Tim, U.K.
I will pray for ya 😹
@@mitchellmitchell6938 I survived cheers
@@timtownsend7713 you were touring the Isle of Man?
@@mitchellmitchell6938 went for a few days, visited a few places but mainly just played on the circuit. Didn't go when TT was on tho as too busy.
Long time ago on my first goldwing came with dunlops switched to metzler, used them ever since great traction wet or dry.
The tread on the current angel GT 2 is shaped like an actual angel 👼🏽. It’s laser etched into the tread now! Cool stuff!
Just bought thee angel STs, they're amazing, not sure why he's bashing them, but this was 4 years ago I suppose
Great info bro. You literally answered every question I had in my head before watching this.
650 burgman runs battlax also have a k1600 BMW running the pilot both are great tires. As far as rain goes the battlax has never let me down in the rain on this bike. Here in fl we get rain Big Rain! Both tires are great in those not so sunny times.
I am saving this vid to remind me of what to my when my MV Agusta needs fresh rubber. thanks
Ryan, you have a colon on your right cheek! Love your videos. found them when buying my first bike and they have been so helpful. Thanks so much!!
Absolutely enjoy your site!! Very informative and real world reviews? Priceless!! Keep up the great work and look forward to more to come!! 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Ryan I just got a set of Angel GT's for my ride from Sydney to Philip Island MotoGP here in Australia.... Cheers!
Sweet! Wish I could be there ... will be watching on TV! ~RyanF9
you probably needed them mate the weather was rubbish on the Friday and not much better on Saturday hope you got back safe. I watched the telecast from a warm lounge room even though my bikes running pilot 4 s they stayed in the garage without turning a wheel
Chris Hastings v:no
Why? Some people including myself will put street only tires on their GSA bikes after Labor Day weekend after camping season and put the mixed tires on at around Memorial Day weekend i.e. when camping/good off road weather hits. That's why. Keep up the great work sir!
Awesome vid man! I think this has convinced me to try the Angel GT's for some added confidence and fun in the twisty's!
You deserve way more publicity !
Better than Revzilla TV, & they're good. thx
I drag knee with the Pirelli GT 2s. But they suck with feedback, like they feel like wood. Don’t set them to the 36/42. Set it to 29/34 on a sport bike. They do last a long time (7k miles) and are just ok in the wet. I’m on my second set in a year
Still watched this 7 years later. Metzeler didn’t change their tire name. 😂😂😂
still i just bought some last week for the st2 lol it's probably exactly the same tire but a good tire in 2016 is a good tire in 24 right
great review, really helpful information
Im liking your videos man; subscribed. Keep 'em coming with good content! Agree with the PR4 comments!
Just ordered the PR4’s(along with a bunch of other stuff) from FortNine. I appreciate the opinion/fact based video format so please don’t “fix” it!
I'll be calling your Fort tomorrow.
Thanks
very objective, seen fromout the perspective of the riders group supposed to use this tires, very useful, my compliments
Average Daily temp where I live is 35 degrees C and road temp can get up to nearly 80 degrees..
bridgestone 23 is the one i like in rainy Scotland it suits my driving and had nothing to do with price but will give the dearer one a go next time.
bike 2001 ZR-7S from new
Very well done! You knowledge and presentation is excellent. I would trust your opinion 100%.
+Dwayne Carter Thanks! ~RyanF9
Just discovered your channel...well done...subscribed.....next set on my R12R '16 will be PR4's...Z8's came on the bike....running a plug in the rear Z8...not happy about that...Keeping a eye on the tire pressure monitor...Z8 perform well but PR4 are next.
thank you for the video. bought the pilots and will be happy if i get close to the 15km you mentioned.
Thanks !!!
Hey Lincoln - useful info! Thanks :) ~RF9
nice comparison, from a practical standpoint.
Just put a set of the road 4s on my supermoto conti attacks only lasted 4000 miles until steel threads were showing lets hope the last a lot longer
FortNine Thank you for this short review
The title of this video was Best Touring Tires, all I got was SPORT TOURING! Cmon Man!
Wow! your presentation is captivating! I'm tempted to just change my tires for the sake of it! great tire advice too. Thanks!!
+bdicta1 Thanks! And yes, I know how you feel. I normally swap my tires before they're totally bald just because I'm antsy to try something new haha. ~RyanF9
Another great review! Thank you, Ryan!
Touché. ~RyanF9
I really like your reviews, very accessible.
Just got Pirelli angel GTs for my triumph street triple . Feels a lot Better than my old PR4
Pilot 4 is all I buy..Best tire on the road ive ever had.
Im loving the angel gt been on for a week now
I want some Michelin’s for my GSXS1000! I like the Dunlop’s on them but they burn up to quick and they suck on wet! But they do for some unreal dry grip! But I’m thinking the new Michelin’s will feel just as good every where just from being new if not better!
awesome info right on the money as I am looking to get back on two wheels with a 650 versys, thanks
Excellent review Ryan
Ran the Z8s and Z6s before that. Solid.
Have the bt23 on my honda vfr for touring and the occasional high speed riding, already lasts more than 15000km and never had any frightening moments with it on dry or in the wet.
Have the Michelins on my ktm 990sm and it's a bit stickier, but nothing that I will need with my current riding skills :)
They do wear down way quicker than the bridgestones, but that would be the bikes torque difference as well i guess. Both good options in my opinion.
Bridgestone T30 21,000 miles and very good handling .
I run the Continental Conti Motion, real good wet traction even in stormy weather.
I just bought a set, the set cost me less then my last single rear tire (pilot road 3) how many k have you got out of yours?
i usually get 12,000 mile son the fronts and 5,000 miles on the rears
This is quality content. Good job.
awesome reviews, I'm actually going to try Angel Gt, 2015 r1 stock battlax r10 went super fast, tired q3 now, 3k miles and belts are showing, hopefully I get little more miles from Angels, plus I dig the looks.
Your reviews are very good👍🏿
excellent review man. ala' revzila. keep it coming.
+RN675 Better than revzilla right? :-p ~NeilF9
+FortNine jup :P
Such good information!! Thank you RF9!!!
I use Shinkos! Work just fine for me!
thanks for your review - I just opted for PR4 GTs to replace the 2009 tyres on my Speed Triple. Would love to see 20,000 kms but we'll see
Just put on a pr4 gt for the rear and i can tell you i love this tire.
