This Personality Type Always Gets The Promotion

  • It’s a familiar scenario in most workplaces: A few employees whose skills and performance seem average keep getting promoted - sometimes over their top-performing colleagues.
» Subscribe to CNBC Make It.: cnb.cx/2kxl2rf
There can be a number of reasons for this, but bestselling management author and CNBC contributor Suzy Welch says there’s a particularly common one. The people speeding ahead, she tells CNBC Make It, tend to be “happy extroverts.” It’s a personality type that gives some people “a real career advantage.”
She says she first observed this 30 years ago when she noticed that it wasn’t the smartest person among her Harvard Business School classmates who got hired first, but rather the most popular. These people, she says, were “the ones who were outgoing and friendly - warm, authentic and highly verbal - the ones who planned the beach picnics and tracked you down after class to compliment you on a good answer.”
At first, Welch says, she found this dynamic irritating. “I remember calling home and moaning, ‘Mom, I don’t think my grades here actually count at all!’”
But since then, she says, “I’ve watched the happy extrovert phenomenon play out in companies of every kind. And now, as a boss myself, I understand why.”
“Organizations run so much better when teamwork is high and drama is low,” says Welch. “Happy extroverts help make that happen.” And when these individuals over-deliver on their work, they can become, ultimately, a boss’s “favorite type of employee.”
But Welch says if you’re an introvert there’s no need to despair. “Two of my own kids are your comrades, and they’ve done just fine professionally.” In addition to performing at a high level, she says her introverted kids also “make sure to tell everyone, bosses included, not to mistake their reserve for negativity.”
“They’re in the game, they just communicate differently,” she says. “You have to say this kind of thing out loud. And also, remember to smile much more than you think you have to. People cannot read your mind, but they sure can read your face.”
In the long run, Welch says, “talent almost always wins.” That means, “if you’re on the anti-social side but you’re good - really, really good - eventually organizations take notice.”
Until then, she says, your colleagues who are happy extroverts will almost always have an edge. “Your boss may not tell you,” Welch says, “but hey - that’s what I’m here for.”

What she is saying isn't exactly the same thing. Those people are superficial if they're being authentic, and that's their actual self. Personally, I think she's wrong because what I've noticed is that people who don't want to be there and cause drama even in front of managers get the promotions. In fact, they can be proven straight-up wrong, but they don't care about wrong or not. For some reason, they're going to pick the lazy people who complain about their job, and the other workers can usually do circles around them, but they're the ones that are turned down.

I think another thing you have to understand about getting promoted in companies...it is also about fitting in and having "it". Most people in organizations cannot describe what "it" is but notice how some people just fit into the corporate structure and others don't?
People want to retain and promote workers they can be buddies with. Very high school-ish.

It really depends on your industry and company of choice, too, though. Also depends on what the promotion would be - i.e. a really good employee does not always have the potential to be a good leader, and if leadership is the only direction of promotion, yes, that means sometimes the best employees don't get the promotion.

I understand what you're saying and I agree. But you need to be extremely confident and experienced in being an initiator, communicator, public speaker, and a promoter of your company and it's product to be in a high level role. This involves giving presentations to dozens or hundred of people multiple times a week.
These traits are pretty much the exact opposite of an introverted personality, which will make the executives hesitant on promoting said introvert into upper management.
There are many ways to overcome those specific situations at work as an introvert, but if they can't express those traits during their interview they almost always will be overlooked for a more outgoing person with the same work experience.

Ended up boss brought in HR put me on a three month improvement plan with list of things to improve on with speaking at every meeting being one. There is a guy who is the happy extrovert my boss promoted quickly who doesn't have much work experience being only 25 years old. Anyways I got two job offers on the same day so I left my previous job before the three month was up. This job I accepted offer is a promotion. Went from consultant to project manager so being introvert has its perks too!! It is because of my technical skills and work experience I got this job. I’ve seen that sometimes when someone is really, really good at what they do, and because that makes management look good, that person may be passed up for a promotion because the company doesn’t want to lose that talent in the job that person is so good at. Especially if that person is better at a particular thing or is more experienced at something than anyone else.
These people are often used by managers to teach others because the managers can’t even do what they can do.
So, if you are really good at what you do and think that will get you a promotion, it may actually hurt your chances more often than not.

Specifically ISTJ , its not about communication it’s how you process information, the introvert takes it in and thinks about it then makes a decision. The extrovert bounces the information or conversation with someone. Both can be effective but research shows the introvert types are more prominent at the executive/ senior level.

This is a topic I hold close to my heart.
Yes, extroverts have some skills an introvert will struggle competing with. But an over the top extrovert will irritate a person who's an introvert. Especially if there isn't the skills to back it up. And an introvert will recognize lacking skills faster than an extrovert. So if the key person on the hiring panel is an introvert, now the scales are balanced out or possibly in your favour. Problem is, im assuming theres less introverts in positions that put them onto hiring panels. Key takeaway... Know the personality of the person hiring. You might not need to adjust that much.
The advantage for an extrovert is in roles that require leadership traits. Team building, moral, encouragement, approachability, coaching, development, and supervision to some degree.
My advice to an introvert who might be aiming for such a role would be to practice being more extroverted. Start it now, not when the job comes up. Its too late then.
I'm going to get eye roles here, but hear me out. You're never going to be that person who talks to everyone you meet in the elevator or that can natually stand up an give a block buster speach by just winging it.... But you probably dont need to be. it doesnt take all that much improvement. Believe it or not it's a skill you can build. I speak from personal experience.
Start by practicing with extroverts one on one. Strike up conversations. Talk about them, ask them questions. Practice showing interest, and keeping the conversation going. Listen to what they tell you, take mental notes, and use thise details for questions in future conversation with them. Get used to conversations. Practice eye contact. Extroverts are great for that. They generally talk to anyone. It builds your confidence talking to people. Its going to be more mentally exhausting at the end of the day than your average work day to start with, but it's going to get easier with time.
Also consider studying personality profiles such as DISC. And learn how to identify and interact with the different personality profiles. It will make your interations more rounded and beneficial.
Hang in there my introverted brothers and sisters. Many introverts have done this. Remember that your advantage are focus, ability to learn, and effeciency. These are items extroverts sometimes have struggles with. Use your advantages to develop your communication skills.

Our problem is not the personality, it is what the promotors been train in what they want to be attracted to be popular to be grab on to in the communities. Therefore, the whole chaotic concept is put in the growing up minds, by what the people being taught starting out on the first day of school. That help us grow into the behavior we are experiencing today. Who train us to keep adding destruction as being a smart career point to put the person in a better position, which we see who get the most ratings with their career by the things they perform. The strange thing about it, that it become a popular thing for the people to do, as one moves around in the general public. That help take control of our minds in creating the system personality. Is why bad acts are common, and good acts are strange. See the promotors tell their clients what will sell, by every network fall in line with the system to promote it, which make it easy for the client to fall in line with the system. Who see nothing wrong because of the common sense factor been long gone, when their generation grow up to play in the game. See the new young promotors can't see they doing anything wrong, and their clients can't see they doing anything wrong. Because everything is about success, no matter how they get their, or how many people the system allow to be destroy. Which the system don't care because it creates more jobs, in creating private prisons, rehabilitations addiction institutions, and counsellors in the system. It's hard to figure out the right, and wrong factor in this country.

"If you're on the anti-social side..."
Um. Being an introvert isn't being "anti-social," thanks. Although, of course, we know some dictionaries include "not wanting the company of others, but let's get serious: everyone knows the immediate definition that comes to mind, at least in America, which I suspect is a huge portion of the audience for this video, is in line with a psychological profile of an antisocial personality disorder.
That could have/should have been phrased as "If you're on the quieter side," or "If you're on the more private side,"
But then, extroverts, happy or not, tend to just blurt out whatever comes to mind as opposed to thinking through how a word or phrase might have a negative impact on someone...

Promotions happen if a company sees value in you longterm.
If you held the team down during a stressful problem.
Or you fixed a stubborn bug that the company doesn’t know how to operate.
Your expertise is a rare trade (backend coding.) that not many are competent to do.
You were able to pull off a project with results for a smaller budget.
Came up with an innovative solution that cut costs.
These individuals get promoted. It’s not character ya’ll. Introverts can get promoted just as much as extroverts as long as if a company sees longterm value. Don’t see the company you work for as an enemy. See it as a system of parts needed to function.
It’s not the personality hire. Those guys don’t last for long.

Talking about Inclusion & Diversity, introverts should be acknowledged for their skills and values (as any other human being), not for their lack of "connection" to their superiors.

So basically you have to have that type of personality...bubbly, extroverted always happy go lucky to get promoted. Never been that person.

This is not true do you want the sad world because that's the more truthful answer. You can be a worker with the best personality ever and the best worker ever. However, who gets the promotions a people who don't even want to be there without attitudes and are lazy. Sure, eventually, they do something to mess up, but they go way high up on my ladder before they even get to that point. By the way, you can prove them wrong all you want. Even if you do actually prove them wrong, stubbornly pick the other people instead. Trust me, they do get proven wrong, but even after being proven wrong, they don't care about whether they're wrong or not.

  • @DawnofFab

There is no such things as promotions. You have to apply for it when a promotion comes available and the hiring manager has to like you to get it. At least that's how it works in the company I work for, so the only way to "really" get promoted is for a higher up to be impressed enough to tap you on the shoulder to apply for a position

I wouldn't say for me, as a manager, it's extraversion - at all. I'm not an extravert myself, and I am currently appointing leaders on my team who are also not extraverts. But I most certainly DID consider _personality_ - as in, as a manager, why would I promote someone who does not show me who they are? I have an applicant who is very good at the job, she's excellent actually, but she responds very negatively to things not going how she thinks they should and then refuses to admit to me she isn't happy, but vents to the team. Why would I appoint someone who doesn't show me their intentions as one of my right hands?

Interested in what other people are convinced of too. I've noticed if you're attractive, relate to others (you think like the average person) and talk a lot then you'll be considered management material -- as long as you do good enough work. Focus on getting to know the other managers until you're considered one of them

I’m actually a happy extrovert but I almost always eat on my lunch break. Come in early and leave late almost daily. Help out everyone in the office and still manage to keep my clinical studies afloat. Sometimes it’s about balance if that’s possible for your work load.

Ugh, another video perpetuating the misconception that "extroverted" = "outgoing" and "introverted" = "shy/antisocial." This is false. "Extroverted" and "introverted" simply refer to how you recharge and gain energy. Someone can absolutely be an outgoing introvert if they love to interact with people but still recharge by being alone.
