    This seatbelt still works properly just like an old fashioned seatbelt (before pretensioners with lock and hold) and will still save the human occupant in most situations but will no longer provide the tiny extra benefit of a pyrotechnic pretension with its lock and hold function for added safety in rollovers etc.

  • @deankay4434

    There are dozens of different designs for seat belt retractors and while some may have devices that "Lock" them after an accident, most don't. The receptacle has a pre-tensioner that uses a 38 caliber blank that is triggered in an accident to pull you back away from the Air Bag. It can't be fixed as steel ball bearings lodge on an internal ramp and lock it into the retracted position. The plastic cover near the anchor point cover a sewn portion of belt material that is machine sewn to tear if the force are too great. It will show a warning label and not to be reused. The inertia ball in the retractor is to lock the retractor and if jammed, maybe released with a sharp wrap on the "B" pillar with a plastic hammer as long as the vehicle is on a level surface. Remember, your's will very, but it is the main defense to keep you from kissing the air bag and eating glass. SDM's (Sensing and diagnostic module) contain a 10 -12 second loop of vehicle activity during deployment. This is called the "Black Box" and may be used against you in court. Using serial data from the vehicles modules, it records, speed, braking, throttle position changes, force of impact, etc. Only certain software can review this info, but some have software to clear a deployment event and re-set the module for re-use. I am on the fence about this. Air Bags do not deploy, just because you where in an accident. The center-line of the vehicle is set and only 15 degrees left or right of this point, with the force of hitting a brick wall at 30 MPH will deploy it. So, if outside this angle, or you and the other reducing speed as braking, reduces the force of impact. Your at 14 MPH and they are at 15 MPH and speed is dropping, BANG! no deployment. Electronic accelerators do not lye. Retired ASE Master Tech of 30+ years.

      My 2011 Volvo xc70 wagon. Just locked up its front passenger belt at the B column halfway extended for no apparent reason. It won't go in or out now. Being the passenger side it is rarely used, car has 54K miles. It just did it, no accident no braking just traveling smoothly on the free way. Can this be fixed or does the unit have to be replaced?
      I'm not "on the fence about" it at all. These data recorders have no business being on free citizens' cars. They can't be removed, or deleted and can only hurt you legally in court and no one has said that you own your own data that is stored. Most people don't even know these devices are on their car spying on them.

      @deankay4434 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@arthur1920 Aurthur, I feel your pain as the "Drivers" door hinges wear out first right? Here is a quick and perhaps easy fix. Park your Volvo on a level concrete right way as best you can find. With the passenger's window down, door open and keys in your pocket, move the passengers seat back then recline the seat back as far as it will go. Now the next part is that I assume the seat belt retractor is inside the bottom of the "B" pillar. Even though the belt itself come out of the "B" pillar 2/3rds the way up, thru a metal loop and is probably in a sliding plastic adjuster to raise or lower the top pivot for that passengers comfort. The top part plays no part in your problem. Now here's the fix. Make a fist, go down the pillar, just above the seat bottom, pull the belt out about 1/4" or 1 cm. Hold it still then hit the plastic over the retractor and see it the belt will retract. Repeat if needed.
      THE DESIGN; Retractors have a spool & spring to re-wind the belt, but the safety feature is a metal ball that touches a plastic rod. If the ball is centered, it will release the spool and let the belt rewind. Anything off center, will lock the spool. By "Banging" on the entire mechanism, it should dislodge the steel ball (If off center) and it works again. This does not void your warranty, it does not damage the seat belt retractor and the plastic cover will stand some abuse if above 32 degrees F (Plastic cracks easier when cold). There is basically a pendulum on a stick, if you can picture it in your mind. Gravity holds it straight up / down, but anything off center, it will lockup. The same thing will happen if you pull on the belt while driving or a road with pot holes or turning a corner. It won't work until smooth straight driving occurs.
      There are no wires, solenoid or electronics that control this feature, simply a mechanical locking feature that actuates a metal cog that stops the spool with tons of locking force. Some place sensors in the seat bottom to determine is a passenger is in the seat, child or watermelon. It keeps the air bag on that side from deploying, deploys at lower rate or deploys at full force. This feature keeps car insurance down as well, because of the obvious, but things under the dash bend as well, so expensive when not needed.
      As for the "Black Box", for years in the U.S., only a few companies made these types of products like air bags, like TRW. They receive "Inputs" from the seal belt receptacle, where it locks, brakes, RPM, VSS, steering movement and seat belt locked or not, at least for the driver side. This info is recorded on an electronic chip that repeats. So, every 20 seconds, it records new data coming in as it erases the old. Upon a deployment, the recoding stops and data is saved. This "Sensing & Diagnostic Module" flashes the dash light 7 times while it checks each part of the system. If all is ok, light goes off. The problem is, this covers the manufactures butt to determine driver or manufactures at fault. Once a few of these ending in court, many saw the importance of the information being collected. The cat was out of the bag at this point. Special software use by police, highway patrol, lawyers and others now can retrieve the info, even if the battery has been removed for months or under water. The use an "Electronically Erasable Only Memory" chip that stress the data. It is bolted to the floor in rigid location, under the center console or seat. Frontal air bags only deploy at a 30 degree angle from the center of the vehicle at a force equal to a 30 MPH brick wall hit. Anything outside that, and nothing. Side bags deploy only on the side hit, same with air curtain. You can remove it, throw it away after an accident, hook it up to household voltage until the magic smoke comes out, but not advised nor will I tell anyone to do this. Seat belt is #1, air bag are #2, it keeps you from tasting glass and inside the vehicle instead of landing under it, or surviving only to be run over by the semi behind you. Bad day would you stay?
      Today, you should drive with your belt on, position your seat with arms outward for proper distance from the air bag, watch your speed, use common sense, drive defensible, stay off the phone and purchase a good dash camera to record events that you did not cause to allow your CYA in court.
      On-Star will detect a crash, locate you can send help, even if you don't answer. My other post was the seat belt receptacle that pulls the belt tighter and you backward away from the steering wheel & air bag. It is an attempt to make the system "Bubba-Proof". No offense to Bubba's anywhere. It's when distracted driver's reach down to the floor to get whatever they dropped while driving 65 MPH, is when bad stuff happens.
      This is more than you asked for...but my intentions are for those who benefit on reading post below video's. Hope you can un-stick your belts retractor with a rap of the hand and gentle tug on the belt. This should work. These parts are marked "DO NOT OPEN OR REPAIR". Engineers should know that any tech will open them up at this point. That is a dare.
      (Note; After an accident, do not remove the SDM, destroy or tamper with it. It may cause serious bodily harm or death or disable the system. Only qualified technicians should service your "SIR" system before an accident. Doing so, may or will result in a fine, imprisonment or both) Safe driving!!! ASE Master Tech since 1978 / retired

    You might not fly out the window or hit the airbag in an accident if, the seatbelt in the video still has some sort of tensioner that he didn’t remove. Hopefully, he just got rid of the stronger mechanism with gunpowder for bigger accidents, but the mechanism that locks the belt when you brake hard is still there.

    It needs to be recalibrated.

    • @deankay4434
      @deankay4434 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Simple Living I do not know every vehicles system like the one shown in the video, but it needs to be recalibrated? While the seat belt retractor is not a component of the SIR system, but adds to as the first line of defense of severe deceleration, I see the "Yellow" cable that is DOT standard for "SIR" system I.D. The mechanism shown, appears to be a flat or lateral gear drive system to retract the seat belt backwards only a few inches at best. The video does not make clear if the vehicle was involved in a deployment, if yes, then system components need replaced and others, like the sensing and diagnostic system module can be un-locked and will work, but normally get replaced. Normally, some items can and need recalibrated if replaced for example; vehicle with dual frontal air bags have bladders in the passengers seat cushion that detect the weight of the occupant in that seat. Too little weight = no deployment. medium weight = single deployment or high fast deployment of both dis-charge devices in the air bag if the "G" forces are too high. The owner and the insurance company does not want to pay for both air bags if one person is driving only. So, this nitrogen filled bladder hooked to pressure sensor, like a MAP sensor, needs to be set to zero and other weights like the standard 40 lb. weight, to communicate with the SDM control module would have to be recalibrated. Not only did I work on these for years, but taught the subject in a two day class for GM. The early Cadillacs with a side deployment module and sensor mount in the doors scare me. These worked fine until a policeman or locksmith used a "Slim-Jim" to pop open a locked door as this was documented to deploy the air bag. I think 1987 & 88 where the only two years of this system. Just asking. No harm. ASE Master Tech since 78 / retired.

      Can you not just plug a reader into the obd 2 port and clear the code?

    • @Patriot-hz8xk
      @Patriot-hz8xk ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dc1564 no, you cannot delete it, it's a permanent code, the only way you can delete that airbag code, is if you connect a separate resistor to the seatbelt harness wire.

    He didn’t fix anything , he merely dismantled the safety ratchet , rendering it useless. Might as well tie an apron sash over your shoulder . It would have about the same safety level in a crash.
