Nice explanatory visual!!!. Agree larger intercoolers don't nessacerly gain hp but does prevent lost of power, now I claim upgrading the boost tubes much larger and intake manifold, will increase hp. I have a 6.0L powerstroke upgrading the intercooler, larger boost tubes, high flow ram intake.
Nice video on the basics of an intercooler and after I removed mine to swap out some of the piping, I did notice something ... a little bit of oil in the intercooler and piping itself. What I have now is a spare OEM intercooler that I swap out every spring. The one that gets removed then gets degreased on the inside and outside (and in between the fins with a pipe cleaner). I personally think that is more efficient in the long run. I lost count of the number of larger intercoolers installed on local dubs that are so dirty ... just on the outside. I think it's safe to say that the dirt on the outside has an insulating affect (keeping heat inside) ... and any oil film on the inside prevents the air from directly contacting the aluminum surface inside. Just my 2 cents!
Love DAP, but (and I may be mislead here, but this is what I have learned) a bar and plate intercooler is less efficient, but the smooth surface doesn't really gain you much in terms of "air efficiencies". Furthermore, increasing the length the air has to travel (so passenger to driver side on a golf) is actually the main issue regarding air restriction. Shortening the distance traveled nets you the largest gains (also meaning that increasing the height on a golf intercooler, if possible, won't really effect the back pressure much and is preferable). Another great benefit of after market intercoolers is the reduction in flow restriction vs. the stock units. And for the golf I'm a huge fan (to the point where I had a custom IC/End tank setup created, but an "off the shelf" version can be bought) of the "true" front mount ic (so the intercooler is removed from the condenser/intercooler/radiator sandwich). You lose the transfer of heat and get cooler air & water temps. Great videos tho!
Hey DAP, your videos are awesome. So glad to see you guys are such hardcore enthusiasts. Just got a 2016 Golf R and looking to do an intake, LED tails, and a GIAC tune. I'll be buying my parts from you guys for sure.
I know I am way late to this video, but...intercoolers DO gain power. Why? Because an intercooler increases the "Manifold Air Density". The problem with turbos is they make the intake air hot as they compress it...and hot air is less dense than cold air. To increase HP, you want to add colder air at the same boost pressure. If you only increase the boost pressure, you proportionally increase the intake air temp, which doesn't help anything. (To learn more, check out the Banks Power channel...)
Can you recomend me to an inexpensive intercooler I'm not looking to race my 2020 vw gti 2.0t autobahn just want something better I had a fender bender so I'm in need of buying a interco please thanks
It SHOULD allow for better airflow from the turbo and into the intake, allowing for better combustion and potentially more power when the boost is turned up. It will NOT change the exhaust note in any way.
Thanks for the video and all the info. Quick question, I've heard that too big of an intercooler creates lag is that true I want to upgrade for my a5 2.0t b8 also for the piping whats better silcone or aluminum?
Ok so intercoolers are very useful after upping the boost. Now the big question, which intercooler should we go with? Can any aftermarket intercooler work? APR for example sells theirs for a whopping $1000...is this intercooler really twice as better than the other competitors that are $100s less??
I have an 2015 Audi TTS 8J/ MK2. If you upgrade the intercooler will you need tuning? I’m in Florida where it’s hot. I have a stage 1 ECU tune. will having a larger intercooler with more available volume of air due to a larger size require tuning ? Would it throw off the A/F ratio or computer parameters potentially cause reliability issues without a tune? Forgive my ignorance….
No it will not need a tune and no it won't throw off the ratio, if the intercooler is larger it will just take a little bit more time for the turbo to fill up the extra volume and get to the pressure that the ECU demands ( we are talking under 1 second here maybe 1 second at most of lag) other than that you should be good. The upside is that the air will be cooler and more dense thus helping the engine run more eficient especially in warmer temps. Hope this helps!
before I had my APR stage 1 tune my engine ran really hot. Cats would live on my bonnet, with the APR tune the engine is so much cooler, I hope this translate to better performance next summer. I also would try a Cold Air intake before I ripped out the stock intercooler. Maybe less heat soak?
The stock air intake is a cold air intake as it takes air in from outside the engine bay. DAP does have an aftermarket cold air intake available which I think is,supppsed to flow more air.
Hello and thank you unfortunately the video, any suggestions for a good performance intercooler for my golf mk6 gti,it's stage 2 with APR filter and APR downpipe, and ECU stage 2 from APR,so what should I get for that bad boy ?
Good general information, not so good technical accuracy. There are some interesting fluid mechanic characteristics that come into play in these designs, but at that point you are just splitting hairs. You touch on a strong point though of the weight involved in these factory coolers, perhaps we should be asking if gain in power can justify the weight gain?
Very informative! I have a stock 15' GTI no PP and I was planning on updating my intercooler to the Golf R/ Audi S3. Is that the best one or are there any better Alternatives? I will be getting a tune in the near future. Much Appreciated.

No so what you want in an intercooler is the ability to disparate the heat soak that everyone gets quickly they call this recovering. The only way you can get more power is by the cooler making colder denser air thus tune adding more fuel for the extra air
Nope. It's a factor that will allow you to get more out a tune. As the engine makes more power and creates more heat, a stock intercooler could become a limiting factor because it can't dissipate the heat anymore. The return you get from a good tune is limited to the engines airflow, fuel flow, and heat dissipation. A good tune requires some mods. A good mod doesn't usually require a tune.

What is your opinion on using two intercoolers in a Mk7 gti? (front mount plus stock location) I've heard from one performance mechanic that its not so simple and all in all isn't ideal due to temperatures entering one and going into the second. I had considered the idea since I am stock IC with a low output APR tune. I'm not sure if even an upgraded unit will be cool enough.
I'm confused as hell. So does that mean your car would run faster/better/produce more power in the winter time with cold air? Why are all the races happening in the summer with all that hot summer air?
@@Deutscheautoparts if my intercooler hose is leaking some air when i accelerate will that cause a loss in acceleration a little? my boost gauge reads 0.5 to 1 bar for just accelerating to 70 km/h at 1900 rpms. it never used to go into boost at this low speed acceleration
BILLY BANKSTOWNER when the demi-water evaporate, it use the heat from the intercooler to do that, so it cools down. Make your hand wet and blow on it, feel the difference.
If you're getting a tune for extra power, it's absolutely a necessity. Otherwise, not unless you run the living crap out of it at the track. Extended track use without a chance to cool down will cause your car to go a bit slower due to power loss.
This is an after cooler not an intercooler, you use an intercooler with compounding turbos vs a single turbo set up it cools the air from one turbo to the next then going through the after cooler then to the intake.
