    I've been pulling my hair for weeks with my '86 85hp 3 carb! No where does anyone say how or where or why to adjust the length of that rod. I have a complete understanding now of what everything is doing, I can't thank you enough. I've literally spent I'm embarrassed to say 12+ hours on the water, and double that off the water trying to adjust air mix, link and sync. I was ready to pay someone but this time of year it's impossible everyone is booked! and after watching your video it took me 30 min ! oh I have power now, better fuel efficiency, I'm just completely floored, and thankful. Wonderful pace on the video, clear explanation, hat's off to you! (I've now adjusted two others and turned them on two your video) thanks SOO much

    Wow.. have to agree with so many people. Thanks a million for making this video. VERY helpful.. and fun to just watch. Good comments, you naturally just "say" the things we needed to hear without asking. Ive been an ASE tech since 92, just getting my sea-legs though. Heavy equipment, and new car dealer for decades.. but only recently got into the marine area just for a hobby.. and its alot of fun. Around me this town is all Merc guys.. and yamaha ppl.. everyone is afraid and gloom and doom about "force".. Im with you.. simple. reliable fun. I got two 1989 85HP outboards with my backyard boat find(spectrum 1707?).. tore one down for the parts-shelf, the other one is in awesome shape with all the decals, timing marks, clean as a whistle, but had a list a mile long what was not set right on this thing. So thanks to-you.. I got all the bugs out and purrs like a kitten and roars like a lion! haha.. like its suppose to. At least for an 85..
    Cheers and thanks again..

      I hope you don’t mind another question. I have adjusted the linkage but when I advance the throttle, I am only able to get a little more than idle. It seems the cam never engages the screw to open up the carbs. Any ideas? It’s an 85hp with the triple carb setup.

    Questions for ya, I have a 78’ 75hp 3 carb Chrysler outboard I’m trying to set the linkages.
    How do I know where the tower is supposed to be set to, so I can set the roller cam to the screw?
    How do I set the shifter and throttle cables? Are they to be loose on the ball? Or under tension?
    Appreciate any help with this, very frustrating not knowing where to start the setup.
    Carbs link & sync are good, it’s just the other stuff mentioned. Thanks!!

    Would you mind demonstrating how to properly adjust the throttle cable? I have done all the steps in this video correctly but when I move my throttle it only moves the mechanism halfway. I was thinking maybe my throttle cable needs tightened to be able to open the butterflies all the way? My bar (where the black piece rotates to touch the block is very stiff and must be forced to touch the block. Any ideas? Thanks so much!

      That's cool. I think I need to make a new set of Chrysler outboard videos, replacing the existing ones. These were done when the length of videos was limited. The camera I had was so so and the audio was awful. Script them this time and do in parts. Cover static timing, strobe timing, linkage and carb adjustment, cooling, and trouble shooting. Doing something twice usually ends up with a better result.

I ended up with idle and basically open throttle almost impossible to find midrange. I must be missing something.

      Clean the carbs out, check the condition of the float seats. There are 2 types. Solid seat with rubber tipped needle and rubber seat with solid tipped needle. Initial idle screw mixture setting is one turn out minimum. Adjust the floats so they are level with the carb housing.

      I'm embarrassed to say that I fired up my Chrysler 45 in full throttle reverse. I had no idea what I was doing at the time, needless to say. The motor tilts on 1 bolt at the mount. The prop naturally pulled the motor out of the water (still attached at the mount) and just skipped there for about 1sec before I shut off the ignition. When the motor pivoted on the mounting bolt, it ripped the shift linkage off of it's ball connection point. Now the problem: The motor won't shift into drive. It will shift into reverse, and neutral seems fine. Anybody have any tips on what I should look for?

    Great Video! Although I have a question.. I have a force 120 with the same twin carb / linkage you're working on. My problem is my idle is too high (1700 rpm). I can manually push the cam back slightly until the tower shaft rests against the idle screw and it brings it back down to 900-1000rpm. I don't think it is the idle screw because the the tower shaft does not rest against the idle screw (until push the cam back manually). Do you think I need to adjust the link to be longer so that when I shift back to neutral it pushes the tower shaft back further?

    • @MostlyInteresting

    I've been having problems with my Mercury 120 HP engine jet boat. I watched this video and think the throttle cam needs adjusting. The cam is not touching the roller at all, which I think is my problem. Am I correct in this assessment? The cam doesn't touch the roller until I have the boat throttle fully engaged.

    • @MostlyInteresting
      @MostlyInteresting  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have a Force/Chrysler engine it may have the same linkage. If it is really a Mercury engine don't go by these instructions. Ok having said that and assuming it is a Force /Chrysler. If the roller is so far off its not touching till the throttle is near WOT you may have other issues. Check for bent parts and incorrect assembly. Send me a pic or video and maybe I can help.
