    I have to thank you for this great explanation of these adjustments and how the mechanical linkages work in relation to each other. Fantastic, clear explanation, and directly to the point, along with great filming of the parts as you narrated the process. Wonderful. Just what I was looking to find. Thank you again.

    Thanks for this video. I have an 85hp Force I'm giving a going through on my new (62yo) boat and am in the process of new cables to a vintage Morse MV-1. I watched a video on the Morse and the throttle arm on the backside was pointed towards the stern, wrong way for the Force. Your video here showed that I wasn't nutz on the forward-facing arm. The shift arm is the same, now to just get the cables adjusted where they need to be to run my engine. Again, Thank You

    Thank you. The controller had no identifying marks on it, so I did a search and it looks like Chrysler. Your video came up and now I understand. Thx

    This has got to be the best video out there explaing all this stuff! I just picked up a 1989 50hp Force outboard with no controls or cables. Only the wires from the key switch came with it. I have been researching what kind of controls and cables to get and how to adjust them. Now I know. Thank you very much! I subscribed!

    I have a 1970 35hp, ever since i got it the adjustment to the actual shift linkage is so tedious. I either get forward really low rpm and literally no reverse or it bangs into forward and easy to get reverse. Ive gotten it adjusted pretty good but then the girlfriend will load the boat with more stuff and it sometimes snags the cable. Its very important to make sure your cables are free and can move. Ive even turned out that linkage to the shift cable as far as i can go thinking i will get more throw. Maybe its the throttle cable that needs more slack to allow the arm to move that silly metal pipe that shifts it. What a silly design but fairly straight forward once u know whats going on. Thank you for making this video

    • @neekolatz
      @neekolatz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And sure enough it was the throttle cable. You need to introduce more slack so that shift cable can fully shift before the throttle moves to far past idle. Thank you so much my dog clutch thanks you too

    High, I have the 55 version, comes off the boat tomorrow I hope for a full winter strip (first time for me as only got the boat 2 days ago), taking the control cables off and refitting correctly was going to be a concerned for me but you made it look easy and pretty straight forwards, thank you

    This is great info! I need to go thru mine and dial it in but when I shift into reverse there is no low to mid throttle, it just jumps to fast and is a pain to maneuver and get on trailer. It’s so fast water will spill into the splash well. Any suggestions/tips/ info for me? Thanks in advance!

      Hi Daniel.
      Are you familiar with this particular motor?
      I'm desperately trying to find out if the idle neutral button should have a spring on it?

    • @danielrobert7181
      @danielrobert7181 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kimberlyb4013 Unfortunately, I'm only playing around with a '73 25 hp tiller, manual start motor (well I added an electric starter) so my motor is pretty basic and frankly, I don't know what is that "neutral button" you are referring to. For one, I got all my technical answers from marineengine.com exploded views and diagrams and from my Seloc manual. Love (distanced of course) and luck to you !

    Thanks for the video, it covers 95% of the info I've been trying to get my hands on. The last little bit is the ignition wiring. Mines built into the forward controls and seen in your video....
    Would you happen to know of somewhere I can download the workshop manual for these outboard, or better yet would you happen to have a photo/video I could view the cabling?
    Thanks

      They can be tough to find, scrounge eBay. The PN of the throttle side with the extension spring, is FA58976-1 its a Mercury part number. The bag I have here is dated 07/26/02. A dealer that was Chrysler or an old Mercury dealer might have one. That is the hardest to find. The others are Telex (or whoever bought them) parts.

    Hey man. Great video! Wanted to familiarize myself before diagnosing my 89 Force 50hp. Identical to your Chrysler 45.
    It seems the clutch dog is skipping under load every 10-20 seconds, and I wanted to check adjustments on the shifting cable and linkages before I decided to order a forward gear and clutch dog and really get crazy trying to make my way through a gearbox rebuild. I do have the shop manual, but honestly, it doesn't actually seem to reference or picture this specific lower end of course...
    Do you think the clutch dog skip can be corrected (if the gears aren't as round as bubble gum at this point) with more travel into forward gear?
    This is my first boat, and it's all (89 Bayliner Capri 1500) in really nice condition. Just need to get the skipping sorted. Doing a carb rebuild today to get it running as good as possible.

    hello, i have an 85hp on a 1964 elgin runabout, but I cant get it to run just right. how much should the tower shaft move and do these have a mechanical fuel pump? Also, at times when running, it will squirt fuel out of the top holes in the carbs, do you know why this is? thanks so much for the videos, theyre very helpful.

    • @MostlyInteresting
      @MostlyInteresting  ปีที่แล้ว

      Standard telex type with threaded ends. Re use the ends off your old cables. The wasted motion in that goes on the motor into the throttle cable is the most critical one part.

  • @kimberlyb4013
    @kimberlyb4013 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey there.
    Could you tell me is the idle neutral button should be spring loaded? We just bought a motor and the button won't budge. We found a loose spring and are thinking that may be it?

    • @magnagazoo4863
      @magnagazoo4863 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No its not spring loaded. only a small detent ball and spring that its actually hard to get out and you never really have to. It might be off one of the cable connector ends.

    Was wondering if you know how to set the timing on the 55 hp outboard chrysler

    • @MostlyInteresting
      @MostlyInteresting  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well basically its the same as the big motors. They all use the same linkage arrangement. In that case its turning the breaker plate not the distributor. Use a timing light on the flywheel. Spin it with a drill. plugs out wires grounded. adjust the carb pick up point first. then set the timing link at WOT.

    • @catfishredneck88
      @catfishredneck88 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      not sure if this will help since the 55 is likely a 2 cyl. frank the uploader has passed os so you cant ask him questions. good luck. this walked me right through my 75 hp timing. th-cam.com/video/tDoR64jP5l8/w-d-xo.html

    Where can I buy the cables I have the same engine 45hp Chrysler outboard

    • @MostlyInteresting
      @MostlyInteresting  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are just standard 330 series cables. As I mentioned in the video the only thing that makes them special are the ends. The motor ends you need to salvage off your old cables. The control box end or more standard but you should be able to salvage those off your old cable as well.

    i followed your video on setting the linkage for the carbs as well as this one, and I'm close but something still isn't adding up. it shifts into forward and reverse, but does not throttle up to wide open, and then does not go all the way back to where the idle set screw touches the block. any ideas what i may be missing. id be glad to take a video if needed
