Digital Tour: Wireless Surfing (2002)

- It sounds ridiculous now, but 20+ years ago, accessing the internet wirelessly was unheard of. There were no smartphones and computers were mostly hooked up physically using LAN cables or (in most cases) the phone line. In this clip from 2002, Digital Tour walks us through the process of wireless surfing - including the gigantic notebook adapter needed that slid onto your laptop's PC card slot, as well as the extremely limited hotspot areas.
Digital Tour was a weekly tech show initially hosted by Iya Yotoko and JC Gonzalez that aired on Studio 23 from 1999-2007.
itong mga time na ito nagpupunta pa ako sa Internet Cafe at yung mga laptop during this time is a priviledge pang mayaman lang
Digital Tour (Studio 23)
Convergence (Net 25)
- love these tech shows back when I was in high school
yeah but convergence was way more beautiful show back then and i have a crush on the host there shes very pretty and beautiful i just forgot her name
@@akom3nt nikki veron cruz!
Convergence!! Grabe your comment brought back a lot of memories!
I had always watched Convergence back then. Aside from the content, si Nikki kasi yung host 😂
Studio 23 is truly a throwback when people still watch music videos and tv more than surfing the net and scrolling
Oo nga. I miss those era. Simpleng buhay. Hindi pa toxic ang environment. You can watch TV while doing little chores. Unlike today mas maraming time sa mobile keysa sa gawaing bahay
I was born right at the cusp of the Philippines (very) slowly but surely adopting the internet more and more in our daily lives. Seeing this takes me back when I had very limited access to the internet. Those were the days..
Nostalgia!!... i used to always watch this show on studio 23 I miss those days...i feel old haha
20 years later, we have bosses who expect us to be online 24/7, well beyond the hours of our shift.
If you’re still in a company like this, you can leave. So much more better options elsewhere
damn bro. just leave. not worth it. you're free not a slave
cry much. just leave slug
I'm so glad naging streamline na ang internet connection ngayon. Growing up with all this emerging technology, you really need a ton of patience. Every device needs a specific device just to work, hindi standardize kumbaga. Dagdag gastos lang and sakit sa ulo.
If this was from 22 years ago, I wonder what technology would be like after 22 years from today.
hahahahaha gastos ka talaga makaaccess sa net.. Ilang ISP Bonanza kailangan mong bilhin
I’m a millennial and I didn’t experience it. Compu shop and broad brand ang naabutan ko. Yung dial up sa mga classmates which they had until mid 2000s
i am turning 30 this september and i watche dthis in 2nd grade!!!!im too old for this!!!!
wow bby kapa noon
I was already in college in 2002 going first year to be exact 😂 now that’s old 😂
@@ron_dee18 hahahaha nasa 40 kana pala. Im 38 e. 2002 is pang 4th yr ko highschool hahaha Hi kuya lol
Nakakamiss ang studio 23
pero di ka nya miss
It's crazy to think that Facebook, TH-cam, Twitter, and even MySpace didn't exist yet when this episode was aired. Friendster was only a few months old, Google was 4 years old, and Yahoo was already dominating
Google nito wasn't as effective as in 2004 or later pero yung potential niya as a search engine was a breakthrough kasi hindi siya dependent on user submission like Yahoo. Yung paborito ko gamitin nung 90s was Infoseek or Altavista and I think that was the inspiration for Google.
if this is before 2009 then yeah wla pa.myspace nun
God I feel old
Crt monitor, mechanical keyboard, old style footage, no problems, no bills.
Nostalgia
This is so nostalgic. Considering I was born in 2003 . Millenials/Gen Y really innovative the crossover on how they use internet up to this day is amazing.
2002 4th yr high school pa ako noon, meron pa kami compute subject at we are always looking forward sa subj na iyon.
i remember the gadget shows back in the day where MTVs was in their prime era. Miss those days.
Wow! Iya Yotoko! Nakakamiss! 😅
Nung panahon na wala pang built-in wifi na laptop. Tech fan here.
Woah, this was back when wi-fi and the internet is not commonly used yet in homes and offices.
no shit sherlock
Digital Tour was a competitor of Net 25's Convergence. Still, I love watching those two shows back then :)
I miss this show
panahong luho pa ang internet
Panahong previlege palang sya pang mayaman
Yung globe tattoo stick 😂 nandito pa rin sakin yung sim still working after 14 years later
@@uwumarii oo sa akin din andito pa 😅
ang gagaling ng mga presenters noong 2000s.
fan of this show lalo na mga new gadgets na finifeature nila
So nostalgic, 13 y/o pa lang ako at this era. Eastwood was the OG vibe place at that time, di pa developed ang BGC. 😅
Agreed! Eastwood was always crowded with yuppies. Hay... memories as a grade 5 student na first time sa Eastwood on a 10 pm kasama ang kapatid
@@shockxflyhigh it is especially for those using it for work and business
More people now need the internet because of their work
it's interesting on how the technology further advanced, nakakamiss gumamit ng NEO laptop
Oh i miss this program!
We no longer have these modules because most modern phones or laptops have built-in integrated Wi-Fi adapters/chips.
👏👏👏👏
Thank you mr. Obvious
@@deadly_cutie5259 I clearly dumbed it down for people like you.
I miss this show.
This is a slap on the faces of people shaming those who work in coffee shops knowing it was the coffee shops who pioneered working in their cafes by being the first ones to put wifi hotspots to attract remote corporate workers.
Same 😢 I miss my techie kuya
Digital Tour would later face competition when Net 25 launched "Convergence," which lasted for 16 years. I mainly watched D-Tour because of JC Gonzalez (my childhood crush, would you believe that? HAHAHA).
Meron din TechTV channel sa Destiny Cable that ran from 2001-03. I think ABC5 also had their own show hosted by that guy who works for COMELEC now.
convergence?im not familiar with this show, can you give me a clip
@@undustfixation I remember TechTV. Pati yung Screensavers and Extended Play, XPlay. Some of their episodes are available here in YT! 🙌
Yun ba yung pogi? 😅
I lost it when "PDA" was mentioned
Same here ahahahahah
pang rich kids lang talaga ng 2002. 😅
This reminds me that 4mb memory device before was as big as a refrigerator.
Crazy how technology evolved.
I remember the first time I experienced wi-fi was when I used to work in an office leased in ELJCC (ABS-CBN) in 2006. there used to be a restaurant at the ground floor near the studio tours (I forgot the name) tapos gamit ko ung Sony Ericsson na P900 ba yun, may stylus. PDA/early smartphone pa, if my memory serves me well.
Hahaha grabe naalala ko yang time na yan. Hassle mag wireless daming kailangan gawin tas bagal pa ng speed. Pero cool na yan noon.
I'm assuming this show was answered to US tech show Fresh Gear on ZDTV (then TechTV) was also aired in PH under Net 25 rights.
Possibly. But tech magazine shows are nothing new before DTour. ABC 5 had Infochat in 1997, and they could have easily ripped that off as ABSCBN was known to do with most ABC ideas.
Ang sarap kaya sa feeling nung first time mo magpakabit ng internet yung Smartbro Canopu 256kbps 😅
Digitel Naman samen 256kbps Naman hahahaha
kailan yan? naalala ko yung pldt dial up around 2003. 56.6 kbps.
OMG pinapanood ko to dati isa to sa inaabangan ko
That Acer travelmate - had that laptop back in college!
Ayy grabe mayaman toh😆
@@chemistree6558 haha!
😳wow throwback
if you think about it they are just explaining what wifi is, something we do everyday now without even thinking about it, crazy how technology have come a long way 😁
Funny how they describe the WiFi card as teeny tiny 😂
Also PDA!!!
This setup will cost you around 70k to 80k at that time, my cousin used to have this Wireless Internet setup on his office laptop way back then for his field work, hindi pa masyado kasi uso yung "WiFi" dati since kaka introduce lang nung 1998 sa abroad and around early 2000s dumating sa Pinas
Naalala ko pa around that year na-introduce yung gprs phones sa smart and lately sa globe na rin. Unlimited yahoo at cable tv channels pero mga nsa year 2005 na un ung na-upgrade to edge signal na.
Studio 23 Naabutan kopa yan😊
Back when we thought we needed more internet connection
time flies really fast huhu, I had that type of wifi card around 2010 na kasi japan laptop lang baili ko nun haha pero tuwang tuwa na ako, no Im typing this using I7 13th gen Dell
How time flies :) siguro this time 512kbps is a luxury. Sikat pa dialup card :)
those days i using infra red ( mobile phone ) to connect to internet.
HAHAHA I LOEV THIS! BRINGS BACK MEMORIES!!!
Giving nostalgia
I remember my only WiFi capable device was my PSP and my world revolves around my PSP lol
hahahahah the PRIMITIVE days of Wireless surfing.
Now, parang normal nalang. 😅
JC Gonzalez brother of Bianca Gonzalez. Whatever happened to him?
It took me until 0:34 to see the silhouette Studio 23 logo. Barely visible just like ABS-CBN's millenium 2000 logo. Wow. Tech shows were popular in the 2000s
Yup, between 2000-02, S23 used a logo that was so transparent mahirap makita.
@@undustfixation Agree. US TV stations use the same effect that Studio 23 wants to imitate but it was not seen well on our TV screens compare to US TV logos, like "abc"
now we have cellphone which both have function of a PC and a Phone... amazing!!!!!
The mobile tech of the 2000s was so exciting I’d stay awake late at night imagining about Nokia, wifi, GPRS, mobile w@p 😂 good times
now i feel too old already
thanks. did not know wi-fi already in country in 2002. but judging from the video, this is linksys promo video and cutting edge product talaga. I think the first saw time I saw laptop with wi-fi is 2005 from a neighbor in bf pque, parang WFH siya in her garage. Our first laptop is in 2007 but did not buy a wi-fi router maybe until 2011 at nabili ko pa sa CDR-king yun at 1500 pesos, triple yata price ng mga branded.😅 Sabagay, hindi pa talaga kailangan ng wi-fi until nagkaroon ng wifi mga smartphones.
It's not a Linksys promotion. They were literally the only manufacturer at the time that had wi-fi routers (and pci-e laptop adapters), specifically intended for normies with their one-touch setup button up front. I know kasi around 2004 nung first time ko sinubukan mag-setup ng wi-fi sa bahay sila lang meron nung mga hardware na madali hanapin.
Huawei, TP-Link, D-Link, Netgear, ZTE, Asus, and all these other brands won't challenge Linksys until about a couple of years later nung hindi na hilaw yung tech.
those were the days, where wifi technology not yet fully developed
Grabe na yung panahon ngayon kumpara dati
jc gonzales is the brother of bianca gonzalez right?
I believe so, yes.
classic!!
mahal subscription pala noon haha may mbps na ba noon? 😅
Me while watching this without internet.
imagine ang reaction ng mga tao noon if you brought your 2024 Alienware gaming laptop with wifi 6e with you back to 2002
Panahong di pa uso ang salitang 'Wifi' 😅Salamat dito. Very Nostagic 😔
ahhh...the early days and early debut of WiFi
Dial up de uling pa ang ginagamit noong 2002.....partida may wireless pa yarn
ako 2002 or 2003 ko na ata nalaman yung internet then mga 2006 na ko nakapaglaro haha ganon ako kahirap dati or ganun sya ka hirap i access dati
Heh. 2.5Gbps. Mahirap abutin yan kahit wifi6 dahil concrete pader namin at medyo malayo.
Agree. Halos lahat ng importante (NAS or if abot sa TV) naka-hook up directly sa router.
back when laptops were so angular and thick
What language is this? I understand the English but the other one, it's confusing.
Filipino/tagalog. We use code switching all the time.
yes
@@cadimarucut7724 opo hindi pa lawak yan yung smartphone hanggang 2007 at wifi noong 2013
just for the wifi card cost around 5-6k and 11k that's insane if converted at todays currency
I remember when USB thumb drives were first introduced nasa ganyan din price nung 8mb lang, lol.
@@undustfixation I know and thanks for the mention. it's just hard to digest (imagine) and it's shocking . back then I'm still 5 years old but already playing video games with my brother . technology is getting more more and more accessible through the years
Before : HOTSPOT
NOW : WIFI
no, "hotspot" is the term for the area with an AP (Access Point). wifi is coined as the term for the wireless protocol itself. this is why it's commonly heard as "wifi hotspot" because it's pertaining to "wifi access point" or "WAP".
I remember that I use smart bro usb
This was several years before those usb wifi sticks.
@@undustfixation ahh ok
same back in 2009, i use globe tattoo stick usb with sim card slot inside of it.
Ngayon ikaw na may dala ng hotspot.
Damn, this is old. I think this studio 23 was already gone back when I was a kid. Is it replaced by channel 23, which is run by ABSCBN? I think they used to air anime at night.
Studio 23 was always owned and operated by ABS-CBN from beginning to its end.
@@undustfixation oh!? so it's just the same lol nvrmnd
@@862F4 Yup, kahit nung naging S&A siya same pa rin may-ari. Nung nawalan sila ng prangkisa dahil sa shutdown nabakante and Aliw 23 took over (na hindi na under ABS-CBN).
