TANAKA THE FUTURE ACE!!! THATS OUR BOY!!! HE IS A bokuto lite honestly and its not a dig its a nod to his game while his attack power and potency is nowhere as high as bokuto he has way better mentals and he uses his attacks the same way its the best comparison for him he is going to be an amazing ace in his final year when azumane is gone id say even better than azumane!!

I have different opinion though. What come after "that wasn't him trying to make me feel better" could be "he just telling the truth" which inline with the recent Kageyama development. He became (brutally) sincere and Tanaka know that when he said "we need your attack" he mean it and it give a huge boost in Tanaka confidence. This kind of sincerity in Kageyama answer also showed some episode before I think

Yeah, people at first thought that Atsumu is like a Oikawa, but he's actually more like Hinata. He is hungry for volleyball and loves to be there. Their difference is it infuriates him that other people can't give 100% all the time like him, while Hinata has a strong appreciation for everyone.

Sarah's one of the first reactors I've seen who really resonates with that line. It doesn't deliver very well in animation like it does as a panel in the manga. But Sarah understands Atsumu's perspective as a hyper competitor who is truly in love with the game and appreciates people who are as good at it and as passionate about it as he is. So even with the somewhat awkward timing/delivery of it, Sarah still found it impactful. Really liked that.

To me it is more than Atsumu recognizing hinata skills. Atsumu always put a lot of care in his sets, he always gives 100% and expect his teammates to do the same. Whan hinata shows that he is always hungry for more sets and will always give 100% even when the set is bad, he recognizes that they are alike.

Kita's speech, or "rant" how he called it, actually has more to it than meets the eye. In one of the interviews, the author mentioned that they weren't actually fond of how they portrayed the whole "nature vs nurture" concept early on in the story (mostly through Oikawa and Kageyama). So they ended up using Kita here to come back to it and explore the concept more.
There's another important thing from the original story that sadly just couldn't really get adapted in the anime medium, though the animators certainly did their best with Kageyama's expression: when Tanaka talks about the trust Kageyama puts in him, the author uses a neat lil trick in Japanese - with kanji, they write the word "threat", but they indicate that it has to be read as "trust". I'd say it serves to further accent Kageyama's "royal" nature and the good kind of intimidation he has to him now that he knows how to use it better. I actually quite like the English translation of Tanaka's thoughts in the manga for that bit: "No way that was plain ol' encouragement. That was a threat. He was saying, 'Show them why I have faith in you'."

    • @jakeDgirl
      @jakeDgirl ปีที่แล้ว +12

@@seekittycat I think there's also some other call backs related to him. Oikawa is witnessing Kageyama's further evolution from decent king to serene king. So he gets frustrated + motivated. Plus it's also related to Tanaka's evolution, since Oikawa targeted Tanaka in S1. And now Kageyama is helping that spiker evolve during his own evolution.
Then Kageyama proceeds to make serves that Oikawa did in S1. During the end of set 3, Oikawa also did an off-speed soft serve after ripping a powerful jump serve, to the destroy Karasuno's rhythm.
Along with the nature v. nurture talk, overall, a lot of great callbacks in this episode.

I think a large part of Kira’s speech was also about the hard work that the “talents” put into their craft. The hard work that people seldom see and tend to dismiss that these people are only so good because they are “talented” compared to the rest of us. He felt that it was disrespectful toward the hard work being put it to simply say it’s just “talent” and disregard the passion and commitment these people have put in.

Yes, in atsumu's backstory, we were literally shown that most people didnt like him because he demanded everyon to perform as well as he did and he was ostracized or more like, people didnt like him. But even when he was so slone in his path, he kept working hard to become the best setter. So what kita is saying is that it is extremely rude to reduce someone's disciplined efforts of years merely into the word "genius" or "talent" as if it was something they were born with and not hard earned resultsof blood, sweat and tears. This theme is quite repeated between some other character in the show too like, Kageyama, Oikawa and Ushijima. If you noticed, the game narrators often refer to Atsumu as "Tensai Setter" or Genius Setter. And Kita is able to recognize this cuz, he is a man of routine, so the other guys on the bench probably never gave any thought into it. Also they weren't just jealous, they were more like, "Uwwa Atsumu is so good, it's scary to be in his shadow"

Think all the way back to Season 1 Episode 4; the 1st years' 3-on-3 match. Hinata and Kageyama were struggling to get in sync and Hinata just said "I'll gladly take any toss I can get, so keep giving me the ball." Skip ahead to the summer training camp; their new quick attack kept failing so Kageyama gave Hinata a lollipop set and Hinata snapped at him for "chickening out". Skip ahead further to the Shiratorizawa match; Kageyama was exhausted and making a bunch of errors and Hinata said "I can hit any toss, no matter how sucky." And now here: "Complain, damn it!" "Why? Give me the next one too."
This ties back in with the twins' conversation at the end of the previous episode. Volleyball gives Hinata life the same way food gives Osamu life. It doesn't matter what the situation is, any opportunity Hinata gets to touch the ball is a victory for him. Hinata is every setter's dream, and this is what Atsumu realized in that moment at the end of the episode. Oikawa said something similar to Iwaizumi when they were talking about how Karasuno managed to defeat Shiratorizawa: "In the end, I guess the shrimp is a spiker you just want to toss to. No wonder he's got Tobio wrapped around his little finger."

Same! It's a shame that their dialogues and expositions from the manga are cut bec of the lack of time. Really showed how much they're rooting for Karasuno + establishing the relationships of the other teams within their own members. My favorite relationship expansion is from Shiratorizawa; how Tendo and Shirabu prefers to hang out in Goshiki's room, while Goshiki is stressed lol. Then my favorite exposition/support scene is from Dateko, and I think it's next episode. It got partially included, but my favorite moment got cut off. Oh well.

Full context on atsumu's "i'm moved shoyo-kun" since his thoughts got cut off:
"complain? why? gimme the next one too" - hinata
"it doesn't matter if it's short or if it's low. he doesn't care if it's too close to the net either. if his setter gave his all putting that ball up... he'll take it every time. i think i'm actually moved, shoyo-kun" - atsumu's thoughts
essentially, atsumu is a setter* who pours his everything in doing the best sets even if he has to bend so low to do it, and seeing a spiker who's grateful for every set and is as dedicated in spiking like he is in setting is what "moved" atsumu, so to speak.

For the people who got confused as to why Oikawa was shown for a few seconds after that Tanaka line shot. Let me explain. Oikawa has been the setter that brings out the best of every player, and he's the setter Kageyama looks up to. In this moment, Kageyama didn't only bring Tanaka to his best, but helped him surpassed his limits. Thus the whole jumping over the cliff visualization was shown.

32:39 Old Ukai taught Hinata in Season 2, Episode 6 (13:15 mark) that he needs to get used to the ball... "Volleyball is a sport where you can't hold the ball. You're only allowed to touch the ball for a few seconds... You need to control that moment as though ball were a part of your body." then in this season, we saw Hinata along with his little sister Natsu doing his Ultimate Lonely Pass Practice 😅 and she also noticed that Hinata have really become friends with the ball, before it was like a stranger to him. That's why we kept seeing Hinata still hitting balls that are set for him. He's ready in mid-air to adjust even if it's a miss-set.

The reason Atsumu was moved by Hinata is cut in Anime.
In Manga, he was moved because Hinata don't care if setting is lower or shorter or closer to net, and he just wants every ball which setter set with all setter's might.
Hinata complained Kageyama in S2 for compromised setting (flash back seen).

I always understood that both twins at this point are equally good at both setting and hitting, it was just that atsumu was a little crazier for the sport, on the other side, kitas speech, i always asumed that he referred to the same absolute need to play and try new stuff from the geniuses that made them get beyond the normal limits. And finally atsumu is moved by hinata's hunger, the reckless abandon on rhe fsct that the set was good or not, just keep feeding him things to hit and he will go to risky places to pass the ball is what moves him, like he said in a previous episode that hunger is the most luxurious item a setter can use as a tool.

Yeah, I also think Atsumu was looking for someone like Hinata. I think it's foreshadowed perfectly. We saw in the previous how Atsumu gets mad when the hitter fails to hit his set and the national coach also says Atsumu is the more considerate of his hitters than anybody else, and here we have Hinata who is just looking for the ball to come his way, he will give his 100% to hit whatever ball comes his way, so I think that's why Atsumu is moved by Hinata

It's already been mentioned by Aran that Osamu is the more talented of the two. It's just that, Osamu took the all-arounder mantle while Atsumu laser-focused on being a setter. Notice how it's actually just Atsumu who gets praise for his setting ability, and that the highlighted sets to everyone comes from him. Meanwhile, the highlight sets by Osamu is almost exclusively when it's Atsumu that's attacking.
This is ofc, on top of Osamu and Aran mentioning, aided by the fact that Atsumu's the one who has a better drive towards volleyball. It's clear that Osamu's true passion is towards food instead (manga readers know this), and that's a clear factor in their play. No matter how talented you are in a certain field, it's always those that are more passionate that will thrive better.

Kita's monologue about the nature of genius (or better translated "prodigy") is meant to be understood in light of the twins backstory, where Osamu said Atsumu loved volleyball a little more (and it is actually food that Osamu loves, not volleyball). It's meant to completely subvert the Season 2 neurosis of Oikawa, thinking that people are just born better (clearly they're not). Furudate is giving us a very deep exploration of what it really means to be a prodigy, and it is rooted in the love you have for something, and that love motivates you in ways that it doesn't motivate others.

The kick save honestly has happened to me playing lol. I’m Latino, and cause we play football a lot, we polish our footwork, and ball control as well, and since like playing football tennis we are good at getting balls over the net, in Brasil they play a mix of football and volleyball, and that sport is just majestic, and because we f*ck around with our feet a lot, points like this happen a lot. I have personally have done sets with my feet. I had a guy that used to play football, and his footwork was majestic, the bastard just hit it with the back part of his foot to dig the ball, absolutely hilarious 😂😂

I did also think that the Hinata foot cover was a bit unrealistic when I first saw it, but only part of it. Him actually reacting in time and getting his foot on the ball - that part feels pretty fine to me. It actually going over the net afterward and landing inside, getting past both the blockers and defenders... that always felt a little weird to me. But him actually getting a foot on it always felt pretty believable.
For one, you can see that he's watching Kageyama pretty intently while he's approaching, and can see that he's struggling to get his hand on the ball. We know that his reaction time is second to none, and it would likely be bolstered further by the fact that he's probably anticipating something to go wrong as he goes up because he's watching this. And we've seen time and time again, all the way from back in season 2, that he's gotten better and better at covering in moments like this because he's been constantly training in always touching the ball like Grandpa Ukai told him to.
I don't remember what episodes, but he's already covered for Kageyama a couple of times in other instances of missed sets throughout the series, as have others (I can think of Tsukki and Daichi both having done so before). So as far as him getting a touch on it, I always felt that to be pretty believable. But again, it actually making it over and getting the point... yeah, that always had a weird feeling to it.
I think the intention is just to show that weird, lucky things can happen to either side at any time - all of Inarizaki's luck in the last episode, Daichi doing a serve receive last episode that ended up going all the way back and landing in, this moment, Atsumu's net touch giving Karasuno a point last episode... there's been lots of luck involved in various points as well as plenty of other points that were purely skills or mind games.

My thoughts, exactly !! I was about to comment about how so many athletes make some really superb/unrealistic/lucky plays throughout. It happens a result of great level of concentration and focus and.... just fate. It becomes unrealistic until someone actually does something out of sheer fluke for it to become reality and I think that's what Furudate wanted to show here that it's not completely out of the possibilities.
Plus Hinata-Kageyama freak quick is also very rare but that's an important base of this anime which covers reality + rare situations together to make something that can pump people up and have them attracted and invested to Haikyuu.
Also I totally agree that him getting a touch on the ball with his foot is actually possible for who Shoyo as a character is. He has always had amazing flexibilty, agility and ever since he started keeping the ball with him more after what Ukai said about making the ball his extention, also how the commentrator says "seems like Hinata-kun messes with the ball all the time". I think it is a definite indication for it. And the part of the ball reaching the opposite end of the court seems like a fluke similar to how in Shiratorizawa match when Shoyo "blocked-received" Ushijima's attack with an open palm and the ball reflected back onto the court with a nice angle. It was a total fluke too.

Atsumu seeing the raw potential of Hinata and that he has that hunger that he has is such a great moment in the show. Atsumu realizing that's what he's missing is a spiker to pair with that has that same drive and love he does and is envious of Kageyama.

  • @VladimirMizich

Here's some context to the kick-play:
Hinata doesn't swing at the ball with his arm. That's the key point. He runs up, has his arm loaded, but because Kageyama misses the set, Hinata does NOT swing. Instead, when the ball is falling Hinata puts out his leg to lightly lob the ball over with his foot. That is realistic. I can do it right now (but of course I would know that the ball is coming, so it wouldn't be fair, it's not a sudden reflex like in Hinata's case). I just want to emphasize that it actually is very easy. The key here is to not swing your arm. If Hinata swung his arm, and then did this leg move, now then I would call it bullshit: two motions mid-air, the swing putting you off-balance, and then using your leg again. That would be very difficult, almost impossible. However, to just do a run up, jump with both arms up, NOT swing, and instead put your leg to the side to lob a falling ball over is very easy. It's like catching a mid-air pass in Football/Soccer.
Of course there is a little exaggeration how the movement is portrayed in this anime; Hinata stretches out his leg almost 90° to the side. That is just a stylistic choice. In real life a Volleyball player would just try to get his foot under the ball, perhaps at a 10-30° angle, probably close to your body. It wouldn't be a stretched out leg, but rather a derpy short leg to the side of your body. The concept still stands though. It's very easy to lob the ball over with your foot like that mid-air, without you swinging your arm.
Another commenter down below also made a great point that I'd like to quote: User "zze86": "One thing, Sarah is a tall lady. This would probably not be possible for her. A smaller player probably has a better or at least easier chance of pulling this off, just because their limbs are shorter and can get it into place in time."This kick play would definitely be more difficult to pull off for tall players.

I think a lot is lost in translation here because of the direct translation to "trust" in the anime. Earlier on, i think Tsukki commented he was irritated at how precise Kageyama's sets were. (This was bad presumably because the set was positioned to direct his hitter to make a certain play and left no autonomy.) After he clashed with Hinata over ending the freak quick, he then swung to the "goody-two-shoes" extreme where he was adapting to even accommodate his hitters' bad habits and not challenging their views. That ended after his confrontation with Asahi and Hinata crowning him the king again. Now he doesn't function to best complement a specific player or accommodate their quirks or faults. He's now comfortable enough with himself and his team to deliver aggressive, challenging sets that push his teammates to deliver instead of taking the easy way out.

Basically the evolution from Dictator -> Overly sensitive mama bird -> Serene King. The current Kageyama challenges his teammates to excellence but not in the old way where his view is absolute; he has learned to 1/ better understand what his teammates can and can't do (their current conditions) and 2/ trust that they are good and capable athletes who will measure up to his (now reasonable) expectations.

talking about full circles, there was of course the close of the goody two shoes part, tanaka's line shot and all but to me, hinata's kick score takes the win. when he started training with granpa Ukai coach, he said one thing very critical and I'm paraphrasing here but he said, "volleyball is a sport where you are not allowed to hold the ball. you only get a moment. you have to control that moment as if the ball was a part of your body" he asked Hinata to keep touching the ball at all times and since that episode, in every practice scene we see in the show when Hinata is not on the court, he was always touching the ball. His lonely passing drill was also like a half circle of this xD but with this kick, he fully made the most of that one moment that was presented to him as a handicap or as an opportunity. I just love how deep this show goes and I'm not even a volleyball player.

The birth of the serene king is the moment when Kageyama finds the balance in his overall play style. This whole time he has struggled between being the selfish king and the goody-two-shoes, between thinking about the most strategic high-level play and what his team is capable of. The reason he could tell Tanaka 'no' is because he was in that calm zone where he knew that Tanaka was in great condition and trusted that his strong hitter would follow up on his best set and score the point. That's why it is both 'trust' and 'threat' in the manga, because Tanaka felt the pressure to fulfill the king's directive. I think Kageyama putting his hands together afterwards was his way of fully absorbing that balanced feeling for the future, because he knew he had found his ideal setter mentality. The reactions by Atsumu (who saw the goody-two-shoes) and Oikawa (who saw the selfish dictator) shows that as high-level setters themselves, they can see that Kageyama has found his true style as the serene king.

There’s a lot of stuff I like about this episode, like when Kita saved the twins reverse quick, it was like when Daichi did the same, I believe it was in the match where he got injured. Especially because both the twins and Kageyama and Hinata showed signs they were gonna mess it up before their respective screw ups. I believe Hinata and Kageyama were being themselves and yelling, and the twins were saying they were “hungry” before they screwed up.
Secondly in the first match point it proves that Tanaka has what it takes to be the ace , when they’re backs are against the wall Kageyama believes in him fully, he knows Tanaka’s best weapon is his line shot, but proves his growth by not forcing him into the shot (like he used to for Tsukishima) and giving him as many options as possible.

That jump from Tanaka is so good! He trusted Kageyama and he landed on the other side

    Season4 episode 7
    Tanaka: Keep ‘em comin’ !
Kageyama: No. Tanaka-san, you’re getting sloppy.
If you’re tired, we can sub you out.
    Season4 episode 23
Tanaka: I’m gonna shallow my pride and ask you to do this.
Cut back on how many sets you send my way for a bit.
Kageyama: No. We need your attacks, Tanaka-san.

The comment of "I was not a middle blocker but.." And then being a pro beach volleyball player is crazy to me xD Do you not just do everything in duos? Not to mention on sand of all things to full jump off? Mad respect

About Osamu setting the minus tempo to Atsumu- I think the fact that they could pull that off was due to them being twins. Osamu isn't a setter but those 2 have been playing together since forever and they have a special bond that others don't. Osamu probably couldn't pull that off with another one of their hitters. Atsumu being able to set it is just because of who he is as a setter LOL
