*Did I get it right?* Some people say the Saturn version has superior water effects.....I'd love to say I can notice this and agree but I can't. In fact the water surface is vastly superior on the Playstation! What games do you want to see in versus videos in the future people?
Wipeout comparison is like to see.I started collecting for Saturn from being a PSX fan back in the day and so far almost every 3D game for this system has been a disappointment even some 2D ones 🙁
There is one area where the Saturn version has the upper hand in my opinion, and that's water, that distorsion effect when you look through the surface is pretty nice!
I agree with most of your assessment, but I do think the PSX version is too bright. It is called Tomb Raider, I would think it would be much darker most of the time in the caves and tombs.
While I agree with most of the comparison, I have to say, I enjoy the colors and lighting of the Saturn version more. Simply because it creates a moodier look. The darker lighting and the more saturated colors also helps create a wetter and humid feel. It also makes you feel like you're going deep into the unknown. The PS1 version, with the less saturated colors, comes off looking kinda bland, dry and safe. It also looks kinda grey-ish and flat. Which is weird. Regardless, both still look great and you can't go wrong with either. Great game indeed.
I'm starting to see how a somewhat darker tone could appeal to people who have good eyesight and aren't colour blind like myself. Maybe I should have stated my own personal issues in the video more!!
You prefer the looks of the PS1 version and that's fine. I actually prefer the darker tone of the Saturn, PS1 is way too clear. Also, you omitted two factual differences : Saturn has proper water effects and greater draw distance. This has been largely documented in the past, so you should take some time to check comparisons made before yours. Finally I prefer the button layout of the Saturn for this game. This is purely a matter of preference honestly.
I don't confess to be a complete analyser of all differences in games, hence why I spoke about the core-design site which lists all of them in detail. I go on the differences I notice on my playthroughs. The Playstation version is a better looking game, through and through. Whilst the Ssturn water may ripple, it can't be helped the water looks worse on the Saturn either.
@@gameshack1985 That's simply an opinion though ;) The difference in water effect is actually very significant, and even if you personally don't see it, it is definitely there and water looks much better on Saturn in my opinion. Everything that is seen through the water waves and it looks really good on Saturn, quite obvious when going in and out of the pool. Not even talking about a stage the Cistern... th-cam.com/video/YXCkcprQUro/w-d-xo.html This moment of the video also shows how much jaggies there are on PS1, an issue that does not exist or is very minimal on Saturn, with straight lines actually looking like zig zags on PS1.
Another great comparison, i think you got it spot on. You mentioned the water effects in another comment and that you can't see the difference, when looking down at the water, the Saturn version includes shimmering effects, distorting it, whereas the PS1 version is simply a different colour. Not a big difference but a nice touch.
Another great video. I remember being jealous of the playstation version because Lara could do a forward roll when climbing up a ledge, which she couldn't do on the Saturn.
Back in the day. The only difference that I can really remember is that in the PS1 version Lara could do a Handstand from hanging on to a cliff. You couldn't do that move on the Saturn.

The Saturn seems to have a larger draw distance even though the resolution is lower, you can see there’s a few blocks difference in where the black fog starts in Francis’ Folly. If you can upscale on emulator anyway, Saturn probably then becomes the better version visually, no? (Obviously we have the remaster for 1-3 now which doesn’t have that draw limit)
I knew the PlayStation version was better looking but was surprised by how much.. Duke Nukem 3d might be a good comparison to look at in the future.. and maybe Exhumed 👍
The Saturn Jpn version is better than the PAL version, less bugs and the framerate is better. I'm ok the PS1 version is more polished but the aliasing is horrible.
This is one of those games where the simpler architecture of the PlayStation shines. Core Designs had planned on porting Tomb Raider 2 to the Saturn, but cited difficulty working with the hardware as a reason for cancelling it.
another reason may have been the fact that they signed an exclusivity deal with Sony. Why would they do that if the Saturn couldn't handle the game I wonder...
@@ciredecgellar8232 so many exclusivity deals signed by Sony to ensure that a console with "hardware limitations" would be off the competition, it makes you wonder. Just how afraid was Sony of the Sega Saturn?

The PAL version actually has a secret or two that aren't accessible on Saturn. This was corrected on the NTSC version

I think the darker visuals on the Saturn veraion make it more moody/atmospheric. I still prefer the PS1 version just due to better performance
My first Saturn copy of Tomb Raider would constantly crash on the boulder part of the final level. Literally the exact same place every time.
🥺😢

I didn't even know Tomb Raider was ON the Saturn, let alone that it came out earlier.

@dopesheepify I don't use emulators so I've no idea. Although you could say the same for the PS version.
Your right about Saturn version being dark it make it so much harder to find switches and items sometimes.
Absolutely!!
