She´s one of my favorite goddess, the relation she has with memories, and the rivalry with Vecna and Orcus, have always been fascinating to me. To adventure or run an adventure on the Fortress of Memories is on my D&D bucket list. Definitely adding Nevermore to my Dm toolbox. Great video!
I like that the Raven Queen feels like an deity who’s more proactive. At least that’s vibe I get whenever I look at her lore. Whereas other gods are good aligned, they mainly stay up the heavens and bestow blessings to followers, only coming down when something really big is happening. The Raven Queen however is sending out small parts of herself to interact and influence her followers and pull the strings.
I believe she had another origin where she was a human slave to the god Nerull who killed him and took his portfolio. The other gods didn't like that a human killed a God and now had both the portfolios of death and undeath, so they removed her portfolio of undeath. Because of this she refuses to ally herself to any other god. I believe this is her Greyhawk origin, but it has been over a decade since I heard it so I am missing a lot of the story.
I'm running a homebrew sequel to Curse of Strahd, merging the Barovian Valley + Waterdeep. Waterdeep as the central location, and Barovian locations as the surrounding region. Dipping into CoS and adjusting the adventures to fit my narrative. My bbeg is Pointy Hat's Hierarch Sorcerer Lich (who is a descendant of Strahd), whom has captured the Raven Queen as a temporary means to postpone his own death. He has since succeeded his process to become a lich. In turn the party has to defeat the Hierarch's once-children-now-abominations; all of whom must be defeated as they are the Hierarch's phylacteries in of themselves. I'm thinking the RQ, upon her release, will grant the players each either an Eldritch Boon or selection of Invocations (as none of my players are Warlocks it'll take some tweaking).
Id like to think the Jergal and The Raven Queen find companionship in each other given how they’re both caretakers of the dead who’ve been ostracized by the other gods. Every King of the Dead needs a Queen, and every Queen of the Dead needs a King.
In my games shes aligned with an equally enigmatic deity called the "crowfather" whose heavily inspired by Odin. And whereas she deals in death and memories, he deals in fate and time.
My first DnD 5e character was tiefling warlock of the Raven Queen, called Secret. She is hunting for necklaces of her grandmother's coven sisters. She is also a writer of suprisingly big pile of trashy romance novels with thinly veiled selfinsert finding a love of her life. (She requires no sleep, and her raven does a better job at keeping watch)

I am so glad I stumbled upon this video! It is truly very informative and inspiring. Any Ideas on a character that is the child of the Raven Queen? I have been thinking about it for a while now, and would definitely want them to be a Shadar Kai Warlock, the Queen ofc being their Patron. Any suggestions that could make this lore accurate? I have consider trying to make one of the gods mentioned in the video the father but no idea who it would be, or maybe having her create a child with magic? Only to neglect it later consumed by her obsession with collecting memories? Potentially a man in her court before the ritual? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! I really want this character to have a deep lore and connection to the Shadowfell, a forgotten Prince or Princess of some sort.
@@rebekahkats9018 absolutely! So the Raven Queen would only have a child in order to pursue the want of the memories that child will have or illicit within her ie: having and loving the child, the experiences that the child has in the mortal world, the memories of others who experience encountering their child etc. As for the parentage, I think that it will depend on what kind of experience the Raven Queen would wish to provoke. Do they want a child who is desperate to prove themselves because their other parent is aloof or otherwise uncaring, do they make sure the other parents is completely divorced from her clergy so that the child isn’t directly influenced by the Raven Queen herself? There are a ton of directions to go with it, you could even have the Raven Queen have a child whose sole purpose is to cause or prevent the death of a single individual or group of people, as a form of her own divine intervention via circumventing disaster. Just make sure it’s relevant to your game and easy for your DM to incorporate
@@itslegendlore Absolutely lovely suggestion, the idea I kind of had in mind is that the paternal side of things would either be a mystery to the character themselves or a father that didn't care for the child or never found out they had one in the first place so the character would as a matter of fact be raised by the Raven Queen in her domain. Any suggestions for who the father could be? Even though as of my first time reading this, my favourite suggestion is the last one, I would like to ask about the first thing you mentioned. Creating a child for the sole purpose to consume its memories and for the memories the child can offer her via experiencing motherhood (is what you meant I assume) aka for selfish reasons. Becoming their patron only to assist the child to have experiences in order to take them from them at the time of their death its quite sinister, i quite like it and it is something that can be discovered while playing. But. Is the Raven Queen Evil? It feels more like she is a lost soul in a sense with a pretty dramatic story. Is it not an absolutely hideous act to have/create a child to use it?
Damn, that "Death, the Dead and dying"-Portfolio is really sought after!
lol it really is xD

That’s pretty cool, and makes alot of sense with the gods disliking her considering the implications of her ascension
Ironically, she is the patron of DnD dark eldar. You know the similarities are there, shadow elves and those frickin sadists XD
Yoooo I wasn’t the only one who made that connection between Dark Eldar and Shadar-Kai kek
Great video and lovey are as always! I love your interpretation and the focus on memories.
So cool! I’m currently playing a teifling cleric of the raven queen who comes from a doomsday cult that worships her in the material plane!!!!

Thanks for the overview. :) I was hoping you would get into the relationship between the Raven Queen and Shar.
I didn’t find anything about them and their relationship, if you have stuff that talks about it I’d love to take a look for maybe a part 2?
@@itslegendlore I'm not sure if the lore is settled, rather confusing. Some good discussions on Discords and Reddits. :)
