There's something about him. That something is nothing. It's just him.

There were also some leftover files of genesis renditions of Jam and I think Smooth Criminal, and also Black or White. Some fans recovered them. I am really glad that Sega mended ties with Michael for Space Channel 5 and I am eternally grateful for Space Michael, I only wish Michael was involved with more video games

I definitely remember me and my friend being stuck on it, but for the life of me I don't remember how we got past it. I'm pretty sure we convinced ourselves at the time it had something to do with jumping, but we were probably also hitting up and down while jumping like idiot 6 year olds do with controllers and it just sorta worked.
Fucking Christ, that drove me NUTS as a kid. I was lucky enough to stumble across how that thing worked in one of the Sega magazines that were around at the time, so I didn't have to resort to that kind of bullshit.

Dude I remember my grandma showing me an old genesis my uncle used to have when he was a kid, and I remember playing sonic 3 and K and seeing the mushroom hill zone was the coolest thing ever. I barely could get past the first act, but boy was it fun.

I think that the hydrocity zone act 1 was my favorite level out of any sonic level ever. It was so mysterious and cool. Those little designs on those tiles were cool and gave it a grand look in some way. I would want that remade somehow

I remember as a kid I never got passed the first 2-3 levels of a Sonic game. I still had a lot of fun, but without the level select code, I just hung around those opening levels.
When I first played Sonic games I think my banes were the final levels. Final Zone in Sonic 1 had a really difficult final boss with no rings and Death Egg Zone in Sonic 2 had an even worse final boss with a mini boss before that you always fought after losing a life on the level. I remember getting at least two game overs before beating it with all of the Chaos Emeralds. By the time I played Sonic 3 & Knuckles I was already jacked up with training in Sonic games so I got past those no problem. I breezed through all of the final bosses there with Super Sonic and Hyper Sonic, and since you at least had rings in these fights they weren't abysmally tough. Eventually I mastered all of the games with Sonic and then Tails later on.
In terms of stages, yeah. Labyrinth Zone and Marble Zone are the highlights of the most slowest and hardest levels Sonic 1 could offer. That game was the first Sonic game so it was still experimenting with the formula. Originally they planned for Labyrinth Zone to follow after Green Hill Zone and right before Marble Zone but they figured out that it would be a too much large difficulty spike so they put it after Spring Yard Zone and before Starlight Zone. While these levels are tough they are actually some of my favorite stages in the series. They really put your skills to the test and after a few replays I actually started to anticipate them with excitement. Scrap Brain Zone Act 3 being basically Labyrinth Zone Act 4 is pretty terrible but at least it has an easy skip to the end.
Sonic 2 has a good share of tough levels. Although mostly unmentioned, Aquatic Ruin Zone is pretty bad. Fall down into any part of the water sections and you'll have to slog through slow underwater segments with risky situations and barely any air bubbles around. Oil Ocean Zone has a lot of enemies and obstacles that feel as if though they come out of nowhere so it's a generally unfair zone. It also has a pretty tough, if not simply boring boss fight that gets very predictable very quickly. Metropolis Zone is also an incredibly unfair level with tough to deal enemies and bullshit level design. And 3 acts, yes. The only zone in the game to have 3 acts and it's the worst one.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles? It's generally a more difficult game in some approaches. Levels have a lot of mechanics they rely upon and some of the segments are easy to miss or fail so it really all falls onto the player to react quickly and be cautious of the surroundings. Marble Garden Zone is the only really boring level in Sonic 3. Carnival Night Zone has the dreaded barrel that people couldn't figure out at first when the game was released and even today continue to struggle with it. It's still a fun level to play. Launch Base Zone is not very interesting but it's generally alright. & Knuckles' portion probably has only one part of the game that can get very difficult, and that is Death Egg Zone. It feels really rushed and bland compared to the rest of the levels. The platforming segments can get ridiculous with lots of new gimmicks introduced that are bound to hit you hard in the head. The falling platforms especially kick you hard in the nuts. The rings that transport you around, most of the time, waste your time, and the mini boss and boss can be pretty hard to figure out at first. The gravity switch mechanic is actually really cool and it's coded into the game in a way that allows you to switch your character's gravity via debug mode anywhere in the game so it makes for a fun tool to mess around with.
I think all of these stages aren't very difficult to pass once you figure them out. They eventually even become fun to explore and mess around with. As a kid and someone who plays these games for the first time they will most likely knock you out of your guard, and they certainly have their share of questionable, unfair and bland level design choices. Although the only unfun level for me to play to this day is Metropolis Zone, fuck that level. And maybe Oil Ocean Zone to. I wasn't a very big fan of it either.
As for Sonic CD, well, it's an entirely different topic to discuss.

I was always convinced that most people who owned/played the Genesis Sonic games never actually beat them. I don’t know why, I never had any hard facts to support this, but ever since I was a kid, any time I would go to a friend’s house and they had a Genesis with Sonic, we’d play, and then stop after the second or third level. It just... never held my interest for very long.
I was a fucking sonic-head way back when i was little(99-05 I pretty much only play sonic for genesis, or Pokemon) and was never any good at any of them.
Except for Sonic and Knuckles. I got to the final boss fight, but never even other's to try to get the emeralds because i sucked too much and would rage at the bonus levels.
Sonic spinball was another I was actually pretty good at but never knew it.
I never knew how many levels are in sonic spinball(there's only 4) and when I couldn't beat the first level, I just thought to myself "wow, if I can't beat the first fucking level, which is basically a tutorial(in any game) i must really fucking suck at it.
Apparently looking around online, lots of people didn't even know there's more than one level because it's that difficult.
I got the third level in spinball once, and at some point I was able to get past the first level fairly consistently if I sat down and played enough.
Sonic was always a series that managed to get it's fanbase irresponsibly hyped up, and the games almost never lived up to the hype only making them feel worse than they really are.

Started playing S3&K on Steam a few hours ago, and wow is this good. The graphics are stunning, the music is fantastic and the bonus stages are really fun

I remember when I first got past Marble Zone. It was wonderful, FINALLY being able to play Spring Yard Zone after seeing it on the demo all the time. (I didn't know about the level select cheat back then.)
And for Sonic 3, my copy was a used one that had someone's completed save file on it, as well as one that was on Launch Base Zone, which I played a lot. Then I was messing around in the menu and deleted the files since I didn't know what I was doing...and later I found out that I could have used the completed save file to start on *any* level.
