October 17, 1994. My mom found this game at K-Mart the day *before* it was supposed to come out. It was the first thing I had ever been hyped for. Just the idea that I'd finally be able to PLAY AS KNUCKLES was mind-boggling. I had no idea why the cartridge looked like that, but my assumption was that Sonic & Knuckles was so advanced, maybe the flap on the top was a cooling fan. Then my dad read the instruction manual and told me I could connect my other Sonic games to this one... and, real talk, it was probably the best day of my entire life to that point. I'll never, ever forget it.

The guys that made the Sonic & Knuckles lock-on stuff work are still talking about it with a whole lot of pride. It's honestly an impressive achievement from a gaming electronic-engineering point of view. The address mapping required to replace Sonic with Knuckles in Sonic 2 that these guys pulled off is really a gem of retro electronic engineering.
I cant even imagine whatd they'd be able to pull off these days.

The weirdest part of Sonic & Knuckles is that they included an entire chip in that cart for patching Sonic 2. It's not a part of the main ROM, it's a realtime hack.

That's why Sonic and Knuckles is a weird 18-Mb cart and not 16-Mb like Sonic 3. 2-Mb were allocated for the Sonic 2 compatibility. The main reason Sega did this was to add value for obvious reasons.

@@supersexysega ...okay, well, no, those aren't the right numbers. sonic 3 is 2mb and i think s&k is 2.5ish mb (512kb for the sonic 2 patch). generally mega drive games capped out at around 4mb, but in 1994 that was still expensive to manufacture, which was part of the reason they split the game in two. other part was the mcdonalds promo
@@MANGOM1LK My numbers were right. Mb = Megabit and MB = Megabyte are two different measures. The only reason they were split in half was the McDonald's Happy Meal Promo. The Sonic 2 patch in S&K's was 256K or 2Mb.
If they released the game on one cartridge like they originally intended they could have probably fit everything on a 24Mb aka 3MB cartridge. People struggle to understand why but it should be obvious.

That game, via an R4 cart, was the first time I saw Sonic's origins.
Wait, it had Knuckles in Sonic 1? I don't remember that... I know it does have Knuckles in Sonic 2 though! And it's a little confusing because in the menu they call 3K "Knuckles in Sonic 3" instead of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, even though it's still called 3 & Knuckles on the title screen and has Sonic and Tails still

Personally I loved Sonic 3D Blast as a kid. It was beyond me how well it looked on the Sega and loved the overhead/side view. It was so fun.
Sonic 3D Blast is awesome. If you haven't already heard of it, look into Sonic 3D: Director's Cut. It's a mod for the game made by the game's original programmer.

I cam't imagine that montage of all the other Sonic Games is meant to be a serious indication you'll cover all of them on the channel, but I hope Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 at least get videos. Most people group them in as their own subseries, but Adventure 1 follows diretctly from Sonic 3 & Knuckles and builds on it's themes with the Master Emerald and Angel Island, and then SA2 builds on that as well with Gerald having studied them, and the game's ending very much feels like it was intended to be the capstone on Sonic's story, with Eggman joining forces with Sonic to take down a bigger threat and then pondering on his choices afterwards. There's also just so many gameplay things to talk about with them, and things they both did that's insanely fun and well exeuted, as well as areas they really have rough edges.
Look at this nerd over here, I bet he appreciates the depth of the original Japanese scripts for the Adventure games and the instruction booklets for the Genesis games
Don't forget that SA2 is before Shadow's character was cut apart with a rusty razor.

Remember Scott's "Tales from the Backlog" series? It would be really neat if he decided to continue that every once in a while, especially since the Sonic retrospective originally started as part of it.

I got Sonic and Knuckles before 3 as a kid and always wondered why it was so much harder than 1 & 2 not knowing it was the continuation of 3, but when I did finally get 3 it was so amazing to get added content to games I had already beaten, a very primitive version of DLC? than my neighbor friend got the Sega channel so i had some pretty awesome Genesis memories as a kid 😁

It’s ok Scott, I remember getting stuck on a really easy part of Lego Star Wars II as a kid. It was the end of the first Death Star level where you need to pull some levers before meeting Princess Leia. Took me WAAAAAY longer than it should have to figure out which ones needed to be pulled. And then even longer when I realized I needed to do it simultaneously with the computer.
One time i was playing luigi's mansion dark moon and i got stuck on the part where you have to take down a shandleir because it carried an important tool all because i didn't know how to press A...and that was the first level

2:30 IIRC, Sega even went the extra mile to have the cartridge edit the level designs to add secrets that only Knuckles could reach!
Also, I think the reason S&K doesn't put Knuckles in Sonic 1 wasn't because they didn't want to. It was actually technical constraints about color palettes and a lack of time to fix the problem

This is why I love the final bosses of DOOM 2016 and Eternal. (Yes, even the Dark Lord.)
First played this standalone on the Genesis before the Mega Collection existed, and as a first Sonic game it's brief, but it's still a fantastic introduction into 2-d Sonic. Cutting the save feature was and is a bad way to package the game. That retroactively makes Sonic 3 an add-on of sorts to S&K just so you can play through the game in multiple sessions.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles was such a huge part of my childhood. We bought both titles as they launched, pure magic. There wasn't a pixel in those games I wasn't familiar with. Played these to death.
