Actually there is a point to going to the future, though its not a huge one. The bad future is an obstacle, full stop. You end up in a harder, uglier version of the level and you would need to travel back to make it easier. I love the concept of Sonic CD, I think it would be amazing if they remastered this game as a more modern 3D game with the same story and stuff. The time travel mechanic is one of my favorite concepts for a video game and can have so much potential.
TriWolfBlade I only just noticed that, and I’ll admit, Scott probably should have inspected that clip closer. But there are still other examples out there of the bad collision detection in the original version of Sonic CD.

Scott bought an entire buggys worth of the same snack for a 4 second gag in one episode. I wouldnt put it past him if he bought $7 worth of cigs for this one too lmao.
I agree so much with the overuse of colors in this game. I also had trouble seeing enemies in the stage plus the stages dont really represent anything Its like playing in a painting
Actually Scott, you might be interested to know that Hill Top Zone was originally conceived as the past version of Green Hill Zone. They were planning to have time travel in 2 as well.
This game and Shadow the Hedgehog are some of my favorites in the series. As flawed they are, they had some really unique level tropes and ideas at their core ( Time Travel and Branching Paths )
I'm elated to finally to find someone who agrees me, since the unanimous judgement I've seen towards Shadow's game has been that it was a piece of garbage, as though we can't like them as flawed as they are. I feel like if it was remade with love, it could be phenomenal
Yep. As a kid I couldn't make it through 2 or 3 levels of Sonic CD without getting a headache. I played Sonic 3 instead and LOVED that. SCD was kind of ahead of it's time however and has a very cool concept to it, but it's far from a great platformer.

Sonic CD Takes Place Before Sonic 2, thats why he has a "Horrible Spindash" before Mastering it with the Help of Tails in Sonic 2. Sonic CD was being Developed First in Japan as the Sequel to Sonic 1 with Sonic 2 later staring development in the US. They decided to have Sega Of USA finish Sonic 2 First so that Sonic CD can have some extra time to be developed, Most of the Time was spent on the Soundtrack, Especially the Past Music which had to be programmed to play from the Mega CDs Ricoh Soundchip due to Storage Constraints (which explains why it isnt changed for the USA). and giving Toei and Junio time to make the Intro and Ending Videos
I don’t get that, if this truly does take place before 2, then why did Eggman make Metal Sonic in this game, and then freaking Genesis Silver Sonic in the next?
@@shade08538 Different teams had different ideas, I suspect this could be explained by Eggman trying out different ideas and experimenting with different features and models for a "Metal Sonic". The Sonic CD Metal Sonic could've been created for racing with Sonic, the Sonic 2 model of it could've been created as a prototype combat robot in Eggman's attempts at countering Sonic, while the Sonic 3 & Knuckles model of Metal Sonic could've been created as a far more evolved combat prototype of the Sonic 2 model with far greater power output. Then again, I don't think it matters that much. Out of all things that don't make sense when you put Sonic CD between Sonic 1 and Sonic 2, this is one of the only few. It otherwise fits really well between those two games story-wise. It's not like there are also the 8-bit Sonic games which are way harder to put into the general timeline because of their various "lore breaks".
13:40 I'm probably adding to a deluge of identical comments, but... why don't you just press DOWN to curl into a ball after the Peel-Out? :P Sonic CD is probably my second-least-favorite of the classic games, and it's fascinating to see how much our perspective differs as to WHY we don't like it. I watched the intro animation a billion, billion times too... I just did it on the Sega CD, haha. The fact I could only play it when I rented a Sega CD, along with how freakin' unique it was, gave it this surreal, special vibe to me. If you grew up being able to play it on a phone and look up the ending on TH-cam, WOO, yeah, that would change a lot.
Oscar McCormack depends, if you’re playing the original with the shitty spindash but you want to get speed whilst in a ball, that’s your go-to. otherwise yeah there’s no real point
@@dehydrated9980 They're good for different things. Spindash is better for going up sheer walls, but the peel-out is your best bet for getting jump height off slopes.
Oscar McCormack Nah, even with the Sonic 2 spin dash the peel out has its uses and is really fun to use. It’s essential to learn how to use it if if you want to efficiently time travel
I forgot to mention this but if you listen closely to the Japanese version of Metallic Madness Bad Future, there is a deep, robotic voice saying some dark sentences like "Just give up" and "Dead or alive...Sonic is mine." The voice is theorized to be Robotnik speaking to the player because, since it's the bad future, he has already taken over Little Planet. Pretty disturbing.
@矢上ブレーク what the fuck are you even saying? the super peel out makes you go faster, and press down is your defensive way you are the one with the intelect of an ant
9:23 Funnily enough, Sonic 2 was gonna have a time travel plot, albeit explored linearly as the game progressed. Each Zone would've had up to 4 variants: Present, Bad Present, Bad Future, and Past. e.g. Emerald Hill would've had Hill Top for its past, Dust Hill (cut) for its bad present, and Chemical Plant for its bad future.
Hmph, replace the words Sonic CD with MegaMan X3 and this is the video I've always wanted to make on TH-cam. Scott's sentiment of it just being wasted potential, so much potential, is where I stand on X3, it's like he's reading my thoughts it's eerie. Great vid Woz!

Unpopular opinion here. But I actually like CD more than Sonic 2. Sonic 3 & Knuckles is still my favorite of the classic series. But I would rather play CD over Sonic 2.
For me though, Sonic CD’s flaws outweigh everything else the game potentially has going for it, making it the lowest ranking of the four main games included in Sonic Origins by a wide margin in my opinion (and I already find those games overrated on the whole).

I've played all the original sonic recently and this is becoming my favorite even more so than my previous favorite sonic 2. All sonic games 1-3 have had annoying level design but this game makes completing levels a breeze and that JP soundtrack is awesome. Haven't really delved into completion and the time travel mechanics to much but all other sonic genesis games also had annoying chaos emerald things so it's probably like that but idk I'll have to get back to you on completion but just playing it it's definitely super fun.
@@jaredargento1511 I actually did get the good ending on my second play through as sonic. I did all the time stones but missed only metallic madness generators since getting all the time stones makes the generators disappear. The generators were not that well implemented I agree with that. But getting the good ending by getting the time stones and generators were still fun and worth it. Seeing the good future for each stage was so cool. Metallic madness had the coolest good future. It is very hard but I thought it was a great reward other than other games having super sonic. Sonic CD is probably the only sonic game I got 100% on other than mania. The mini games of getting the chaos emeralds in sonic 1, 2, and 3 were just less fun I didn't get that.
Andrew Harris Well, collecting the Chaos Emeralds was never the most fun to me in the classic games either, but with the exception of Sonic 1, I’ve now gotten to the point where I can do it fairly comfortably. Sonic 2 the minigame is just too annoying and sonic 3 is less annoying but they decided to add another set of chaos emerald called hyper emeralds just to make it more confusing lol. I do like mania in terms of collectables more than CD though. However I love CD in terms of style more than mania. I feel mania improved on every returning stage besides the CD ones. I feel the CD stages in mania were the only ones I preferred the original. Also metallic madness was the only returning final stage in mania I think due to it being the least stupid.
I'm happy I actually guessed that ending properly. At first I was thinking he'd smash it with a hammer or something, AVGN style, but then realized as a collector he'd have to buy another, so I figured he'd just put it back in its place as he did.
I agree with how disappointing this game's wasted potential is. I'd be interested to see more into the development process as to why all these bad decisions got made during development. I know it's easy to say "drugs" but I bet there's actually an interesting story in there somewhere!
@@SuperSireBoyYT And that wouldn’t be such a bad thing, except that this game still haphazardly attempts to cling to the very thing it’s trying to be different from, making it an unfocused waste of potential.

Pivot Invasion Thanks for explaining it to them. I didn’t realize some people found this comment in the depths of Ancient Egypt.

I’m warning you now: DON’T TRY TO GET THE GOOD ENDING IN SONIC CD! It single-handedly made me hate the game on my first playthrough!
@@jaredargento1511 I actually did get the good ending on my second play through as sonic. I did all the time stones but missed only metallic madness generators since getting all the time stones makes the generators disappear.

I do like mania in terms of collectables more than CD though.
However I love CD in terms of style more than mania. I feel mania improved on every returning stage besides the CD ones. I feel the CD stages in mania were the only ones I preferred the original. I'm happy I actually guessed that ending properly. At first I was thinking he'd smash it with a hammer or something, AVGN style, but then realized as a collector he'd have to buy another, so I figured he'd just put it back in its place as he did.

I feel the time travel mechanic would've been cooler if you stayed in the same time period between levels.
Like you exit a level in the future, you go to the next one in the future and then to avoid something in the future you'll need to find a way to the present
