I love how you're one of the few pointing stuttering problems in games, that's the first step to make devs more careful since it's a very boring thing.
And the worst part is that these stutter issues become an even bigger problem on lower spec machines. I am only running a Ryzen 5 3600, 3200CL16 Ram overclocked to 3600 (with mediocre timings), a cheap Sata SSD, and the stutter in games such as Far Cry 5 and Jedi: Fallen Order was unbearable, way worse than what was shown here in the video. Since most consumers have somewhat similar machines to my own, and don't all own a beastly 10900k, their experience will be somewhat similar to mine which is a serious issue.
@@BlindBison Same, actually stuttering above 60 fps is like a punch in the eyes, sure everyone has a different tolerance but stutter from 144 or above to 40 completely ruin the experience and make useless building a new powerful pc. Yeah, thats sounds like a great idea, putting in Ray Tracing and cutting it down until it's barely noticeable. I get quarter resolution stuff, performance reasons, of course, but not using rt on water and using rt shadows only for sun and without alpha. I mean what's even a point of this? At least give us Crytek style console variables to play around and remove all those restrictions..
AMD sponsored game so they were probably forced to cut down RT to make it actually playable on AMD gpus and removed the higher settings to make it less embarrassing.
"far better RT" doubt It's far from being much better, it only performs a bit better because nvidia is at its second generation of RT while AMD is at his first. RT performance of current AMD cards are equivalent of Turing, which is not bad at all. Other AMD sponsored titles have great RT, stop sharing misinformation.
The stuttering every few seconds on a 9900k and a 3090 is unacceptable. I'll be at 4k over 60 fps the entire time, but it'll still stutter randomly with an m2 ssd. They need to fix the CPU core bounding issues.
Same here i play at 4k max settings with an rtx 3090 and i9 9900k. So far only high settings with RT off runs butter smooth and free of stutter, we just have to wait for patches.
I have a 3090 and a 10980XE. Huge stutter while driving. Unacceptable in 2021. I play the game at 4K maxed out with HD textures but no RTX (I am not a fan of it in general).
@@nl5670 The issue i have with RTX is i haven't seen any games that currently can do Raytracing and water deformity together. When a car drives through a puddle for instance it really should affect the reflection. I had this issue with Watch Dogs Legions as well. I think it looks amazing for game play it's the 30 fps cutscenes that's bugging me. Idk why they didn't just make it consistent across the board for next Gen consoles
@@FounderX9 The world is, but the characters look terrible, in the end it all works out because it gives it this cartoony/ celshaded look almost with the bright colour palette beeing used. but the engine needs a revamp and more realism.
The issue with stutters when you pan the camera on PS5 (and presumably on XBOX) is a bug. It happens after watching 3-4 cutscenes (where the framerate is capped at 30 fps). When game resumes after watching a small number of said cutscenes the in game framerate begins to show these tiny stutters. If you close the game and reload it, the fps during gameplay is once again buttery smooth without even a hitch of a stutter. So this thing is definitely a bug that is tied to cutscenes.

Yes it does and this is the best they can do for there triple a game the best of the best looks like they should be demoted from the triple A list until they start to fix there engine or update it to a more newer and less buggier. Also you should only get the triple A status if you meet the standard of excellent that covers every thing down to optimization pushing the visuals to the limits with hardly no bugs and gameplay for me that's the gold standard but unfortunately game dev just get away with it all the time. Ubisoft doesnt have to hire bugtesters because they know after the initial release they can just watch the DF review and fix all the published bugs in an update.

These games just putting rt reflection and shadows in their games can hardly be called representative of what rt is all about. Very few games go the extra mile, wish there were more like Metro, that push what can be done.
non-rt reflections ie. ssr or cubemaps are very distracting, when you get used RT reflections, so i would say dynamic reflections/GI are best candidate for RT cause otherwise they are very costly via rasterizer..
It's usually a case with AMD sponsored titles. This is like the fourth AMD title in a row that has had garbage ray tracing with quarter resolution. RE Village was bad. Godfall was bad. Dirt 5 was bad.
True but I think we are at least a pro generation away from consistent impressive ray tracing. A lot of people play games on consoles and the consoles are still super limited in this regard.
That's probably too demanding for next-gen consoles and anyone who doesn't have the mid-high end RTX cards. RT also is very costly on the CPU side too which is worrying imo since with the very capable Ryzen Zen 2 CPUs in the new consoles there was hope that developers would be pushing things like more advanced physics and AI but that's going to be difficult when devs use much of the CPU resources for RT for better graphics.
Putting this game in Spanish with Spanish UI helped me learning Spanish so much so far! Lol and having a real protagonist with a personality is great too. Definitely my fave Far Cry so far.
Alex! Nooooo! I’ve been waiting all day for this and you didn’t talk about Fidelity FX. I messed with the damn benchmark for two hours this morn trying to see if DRS was better for hitting 60 or Fidelity. I cannot make heads or tails of the results I’m getting on my RTX2060.
Thanks for the thorough analysis once again! I thought something was wrong with my rig with how bad the stutters were, so it's good to know it's just an issue with the engine and is consistent across all versions. I hope the developers start listening and begin to optimize more as we get further into this new generation of games.
Thanks Alex for explaining this stuff so detailed. Many gamers think it's their hardware failing, but when you actually go after it you find it's the games software programmed wrong.

I swear DF is looking at Xbox series s on a 4k screen and then say " it's not attractive" but I'm running it on a 1440p and it looks gorgeous. Yes I tried it on a 4k tv and it's not "pretty" but for a 1080p -1440p 300 dollar console... It's f-ing amazing !!!
@@erokson9412 ok well thats a special case then still I would probably never ever play the Series S if I had the same setup as you cause I would constantly think to myself "yo this would look better if I just got my ass into another room wtf am I doing?"
@@spikepsych haha I do use my x more cause I got the nicer tv out. But sometimes after a long ass day at work .I like to lay down and play. But still. And many people might not be able to afford the X or can't get it from the shortage. And that is ok. People may feel like second class and that's not nice .
On my 3080 the low res mipmaps were also an issue at 1440p, while vram usage never exceeded 8700 MB. I saw a tiny fps boost by disabling hyperthreading on my 10850k, really only 2-3 fps gain though.
@Geo M Er, why? At PS5 settings I get much, much higher FPS. I mainly play games I mod anyway, so PS5 doesn't really do anything I'd need. Edit: Oh, never mind. I see you're one of those "PS5 wins" people. Enjoy your platform.
And these particular results are yet another example of why "world's greatest console!!!!!!" designation can turn on a dime. Because it's software that makes the fundamental difference, and you can bring a powerhouse of any kind to a crawl with an optimised or buggy software. So every time the Console Wars drones proclaims superiority because of a single data point, it is absolutely ludicrous. And also PC master race drones are just as bad. Coming into wave their virtual privates about to say "hahaha we have more powerful hardware!" is similarly ludicrous, because when you have no upper limit on how much you may spend, of course you will have higher hardware potential.
Have they fixed the atrocious npc speech quality? I had that in Far Cry 3, 4 and 5. I guess they are just low bitrate but I don't get the compromises the devs are making. The games all look blurry and the npc's sound horrible.

By all the graphical enhancements every year, when do we completely get rid of clipping? I'd like to see a Digital Foundry episode about clipping - the oldest immersion breaker in the history of 3D videogames.
The only way to completely get rid of clipping is to fully physically simulate every object and limb. So that when they collide together, they 'bump' and move aside, etc. This isn't possible on current hardware at 60fps, or even 30fps if you want the rest of the game to look good. Detailed physics like that are very expensive. It's the same reason we don't have fully simulated water in games yet.
@@Harry101UK Thanks for your answer. Hard to believe this is still so difficult to achieve in 2021. About 20 years ago when graphics were simple, this wasn't a big deal, but nowadays with such good and immersive graphics, clipping gets so obvious and breaks the illsuion. I owned a Series X for some time and I was disappointed in some of the implementations of “Performance Modes” in games like Battlefield V and Watch Dogs 2 in order to achieve the higher frame rates. The games would become blurry messes, sometimes dropping to resolutions below 1080p to reach those frame rates. It was a bit disappointing, but I won’t say that PlayStation 5 doesn’t have the same issue. A lot of the games that have been “FPS Boosted” on Series X aren’t even patched yet on PS5, so you don’t even have the option. So then, for me as a PC gamer, it turns to which console has the better exclusives, and the PS5 inevitably wins. I was really looking forward to seeing Microsoft take that FPS Boost program and really kill the PlayStation improving the large back catalog of popular last gen titles, but it just wasn’t done very well. I’m not sure if it’s because of the limitations of the console or the actual implementation itself. Keyboard support was also pretty lackluster as well, and seemingly it runs multiplat games like this one, Assassins Creed Valhalla and other new titles at similar graphical levels as it’s Sony competitor, so I don’t really see the point in owning the Series X other than for playing with friends on the same platform or maintaining your achievements and gamerscore. At least give us Crytek style console variables to play around and remove all those restrictions..

It’s because Ray Tracing was developed from the perspective of AMD cards and not nvidia. Nvidia cards are capable of far better RT.
Just for the name sake.

These games just putting rt reflection and shadows in their games can hardly be called representative of what rt is all about. Very few games go the extra mile, wish there were more like Metro, that push what can be done.
Metro is alot more visually interesting.
non-rt reflections ie. ssr or cubemaps are very distracting, when you get used RT reflections, so i would say dynamic reflections/GI are best candidate for RT cause otherwise they are very costly via rasterizer..
RT also is very costly on the CPU side too which is worrying imo since with the very capable Ryzen Zen 2 CPUs in the new consoles there was hope that developers would be pushing things like more advanced physics and AI but that's going to be difficult when devs use much of the CPU resources for RT for better graphics.

the fact that nvidia skimped on vram on the 3080 is on them. the reason i didn't buy a 3080 is because I play at 5120x1440, 10gigs is just not enough for maxed out modern games. I was forced to get a 3090, then again in hindsight it was a good decision as 3080's are the same price i paid for this one at launch.
It just wasn't much of a focus. My guess is they have a patch in the works to improve it and it just wasn't ready for launch.
Thank u… was deciding whether to get PS5 or XSX version… I can’t notice the tearing

@@dtf.editzz PC gaming being expensive is a myth. On the long term, pc gaming is much cheaper

The best way to get the wobbly framerate on console is to spin in one spot without VRR :)
I appreciate Guapo being in many shots. Really added a lot to the video
Makes every one of those shots more handsome. ;)
Thought it was just me but holy hell is the stutter/ screen tearing a big issue. Was doing a mission earlier and it got to the point where the whole game just locked up for a good 4-5 seconds then went back to normal.
You playing on ps5? Cause it’s noticeable there
One interesting thing is the stuttering on series x only occurs when using quick resume. When starting game from fresh it doesn't happen
It happens all the the time. I don't use quick resume and close the game after playing.
Happens all the time
It's really weird. My version suffers horrible micro stuttering when panning the camara after quick resume. After multiple testing every time I restart game from fresh the stuttering is eliminated. Its unfortunate it doesn't have the same effect for you guys
Its weird how anything right on the edge of the screen is noticrably blurrier, I think it definitely contributes to the soft look that you mention.
Yeah, it's horrible, you can't even disable it on PC. Well, at least not the main cause of blurring which is the chromatic aberration. Terrible design choice. Chromatic aberration should always be a choice in video games, A plague tale also suffered from this too. The option had to be disabled in the config file but here you can't even do that. 😠
@@brewski535 I am sure there will be enough outrage they will add a toggle in a patch . I hope they add a FOV slider to Series X and PS5 in next update.

They did talk about Series S.

That seems very likely.
Good amount of screen tearing on ps5 just like Valhalla and WD legion seems to be a Ubisoft tradition at this point
Exactly!!! I thought I was going crazy messing around with tv and consol settings. But it’s only the newest Ubisoft games that do this shit 😖
Screen tearing was far worse in Valhalla for me on Series X. Definitely noticeable at times in Far Cry 6. But I had to stop playing Valhalla until Ubisoft patched it... but hey, at least they're consistent lol
Yep I only have this problem on Ubisoft games
Yeah, sad for the ps5 players.
In my opinion there’s little details to improve graphically but the game graphic presentation in general, is beautiful and accurate in lightning, shadows, colors, and textures. They did a very good artistic presentation for an old graphic engine. The shadows don’t hide the detail, you can actually see at night, the sea looks enjoyable, and the drawing distance and detail is very consistent so it adds to the inmersión just finish the game today and it’s been a long time since a game made want to look at what trophies I can get on ps

Did you do the xbox series x test with a vrr screen? Just wondering
By all the graphical enhancements every year, when do we completely get rid of clipping? I'd like to see a Digital Foundry episode about clipping - the oldest immersion breaker in the history of 3D videogames.
Whats clipping?
@@123doomdoom when one object intersect another. For example a character’s arm going through a wall.
And pop in, watch dogs legion has pretty bad pop in
The only way to completely get rid of clipping is to fully physically simulate every object and limb.
Especially in 3rd person games when the gear on the back of the character clips, I always ask myself if this could really so damn hard to avoid. Naughty Dog did a pretty good job with The Last of Us Part II.
About 20 years ago when graphics were simple, this wasn't a big deal, but nowadays with such good and immersive graphics, clipping gets so obvious and breaks the illsuion. So it's strange that there seems to be almost zero enhancements for the last 3 decades while graphics went from grey pixels to almost photorealism.
I'm using a 2080Ti + the HD texture pack and textures goes blurry quite often, mostly clothing textures on your character.
Turn of HD textures, that removed lot of textures blurriness for me
If I try to use quick resume on the series x with this game, the audio is off and there is massive stuttering. Quiting the game and loading it from the start each time fixes this.
So the ps5 is more like a 2060 super vs the series x 2080ti/3070
I believe a Series X is under a 2080 Ti/3070.
I beat the game on PS5 this past week and enjoyed the game for the most part, but it has some abysmal screen tearing even now three months after launch.
If you do a rebuild of the ps5 data base and clearer system update cache. The stutters are completely gone. I noticed it when I watched this video and wouldn’t if I hadn’t watched this but after I did two sub options after clicking option 5 in safe mode I can promise you when you now pan the camera like you did in this video the trees and world do not stutter.
Jheez. The fact that the traversal game stutter is still a thing after 3 games and 7 years is not a good look.
I mean cyberpunk has been in development longer and its worse than far cry... Travel stutter is so minor compared to other failed games like cyberpunk.
@@ShinyMooTank I have a 3090 and a 10980XE. I haven’t noticed any traversal stutter in CP2077, but the stutter in the last 3 FC games is unbearable in my opinion.

It's sad that Alex has seemingly dropped 2060 from the comparison/optimisation. 2060 super is good to have of course but there are many of us with stock 2060 or with mobile 2060 (115-130 W) that would like an advice on how to utilize 6 gb vram pool properly. Otherwise great job highlighting the issues as always 👍
How did you manage to have better plant resolution on PS5. I have both versions, ps5 and SX, but it looks worse on PS5. Thank you in advance for this tip, waiting for your answer
Maybe it's some kind of damage control for Sony.
Looks great on the Series X, runs great too.
Looks horrible on both consoles looks last gen
@@malazan6004 You probably don’t own the game bud. Looks amazing in 4k , 60 fps on my series x. Sunsets look amazing, water, foliage in the island, clouds. The character models look last gen though but its extremely untrue to say it looks last gen on the next gen consoles.

They should do a low res raytracing with 40fps for xsx and ps5
No they should not.
RT here is very lame so no reason for that.
Still confounds me that I’ve watched 5 reviews and even Digital Foundry don’t compare console versions with and without the optional 20gig texture pack. Review copies must have been supplied to y’all with texture pack non optional?
I wonder if the RT is a bit lacking because AMDs RT is significantly weaker than Nvidias, so they targeted AMD for ray tracing performance and just removed the options
I think they added some basic ray tracing last minute and hoped it would get a pass
This game screams bargin bin. Its far cry looks fun but you know itll be cheap as chips in 3 months or so.
The old engine with tweaks looks outdated because its cross platform. Can only imagine what a dedicated PS5/XBSX version with all the bells and whistles would have been like.
just dl pc rip
Yeah there is some stuff that looks great, but there is a lot that looks a little long in the tooth now.
It is still a native game for both platforms though. It's not back compat . There will still be limitations due to memory especially on both consoles on just how much they can do.
The screen tearing is constant for me on PS5 and same with the frame drops. Going to wait a couple months for them to fix it
Honestly, I doubt they will fix it ever. Just look at AC Valhalla or Immortals : Fenyx Rising or Watch Dogs Legion, for example. Same situation on Series X. Sooner or later I'll grab myself a C1 during next year and with VRR I don't have to worry about this anymore. "Thankfully" it's mostly Ubisoft's games that suffer from screen tearing in their latest games..
The XSX has been killing it lately. Xbox have done a phenomenal job engineering that console.
totally have, but I think there is still some work, especially as regards the optimizations but in a few years we will see some good things
Lmao with piss poor first party games and gamepass that bots like to brag about yet 99.9% of the games on it are old af that we have all played or ain't interested in. Thank fuck I'm moving over to PS5, it's a depressing experience on xbone for real.
@@JohnDoe-pu5gk Yeah, well, that's just like, your opinion, man.
(Or if you’re a huge Halo, Forza or Gears fan!)
All the games on XSX are lastgen. All.
Graphics like Ratchet or Demon Souls do not exist yet on XSX.
Definitely a bit rough around the edges even if it’s an improvement overall. Ubisoft needs to start giving the far cry teams another year in between titles to polish them up
It was already delayed 8 months for polish.
@@Phil_529 Dunno what to tell ya, it needed more time . Cyberpunk 2077 got delayed 3 times for polish and it still released a mess. Companies shouldn’t release products before they’re finished, it’s their upper management teams fault

About the stutter... Back in th day when I played Far Cry Primal, I had an unplayable stutter (I do mean unplayable). After some investigation, it turned out that lowering mouse polling rate from 1000hz to 500hz solved the issue completely. Given that FC still runs on the same engine, I wonder if that might help?
