- Over the years, cell phones have come in many shapes and sizes. From bulky phones with antennas and handsets that flip open, to modern devices connected to the internet, the mobile phone market has evolved dramatically since its creation in 1973.
Since then, phones have become more than just gadgets that people can play around with. They’re our calendar, our camera. In a lot of ways, they’re core to how we live our lives, and we’ve developed a dependence on them.
But innovation in the smartphone industry seems to have reached its peak. Beyond flashy cameras and more efficient chips, phone makers are struggling to find ways to entice consumers the same way they did years ago.
“We now live in this kind of sea of smartphone sameness,” said Ben Wood, chief analyst at tech research firm CCS Insight.
“I think we have moved to a point now with mobile phones where people aren’t kind of rushing out saying, ‘I really want to get that new phone,’” Wood said. “In many cases, it’s almost a distress purchase.”

Battery life is the area which still has much room for improvement in my opinion. If we can develop smartphones with a battery life of many days I suspect they would be popular.
facts. When they say "battery life" has improved. No it has not! Just bigger batteries and processor optimisations.
Just imagine a iPhone or Pixel with a 6 or 10Kmph battery. With Ulta fast charger.

It used to be that upgrading your phone every year made sense because you would get many massive improvements every year. Nowadays most people just buy a new phone when something is wrong with the one they have.

@@0fficialdregs I've pretty much always bought used or refurbished. Buying phones from the carrier is super expensive so I turned to eBay. I bought my current S20 FE refurbished on eBay for like $350 back in early 2021. Before that I had the LG V40, which was also refurbished. I bought that one for like $275 back in 2019. I've never had an issue with any of my refurbished phones. I'm not sure which phone I'll upgrade to next. Whichever phone it is...it'll be bought refurbished off eBay... For a fraction of the cost sold by phone carriers. 😂

I bought my used LG and Iphone 6 for $54 and $75 respectively for ebay. The LG is my temp phone while the stylus use metro PCs card for hotspot while the iphone is just for itunes and music.

Re-release the Samsung Note 9 w/modern specs. How can you beat expandable storage, headphone jack & a real FM radio? And no crap in the screen. Keep the camera in the bezel until the underscreen camera becomes truy viable.
@@jaywright9635 that's the problem with phones nowadays. they focused too much on the aesthetics rather than innovating what's inside. phone feels the same each year because there's not much improvement, which is also a problem for yearly releases.
That’s why the iPhone is so popular. They saw ahead of time that a pissing contest with specs will eventually get to a point where the average consumer won’t care about it at all. So instead they focussed on developing their own OS and ecosystem to set themselves apart. And in this era where the kind of tech that used to be in flagships has trickled down to cheaper devices, software becomes the differentiator.

Samsung react to falling smartphone sales by raising prices across the board. It's the exact opposite of supply and demand. No wonder people aren't upgrading their phones so much anymore.

Samsung in 2021 was like this: hello there, we have released the brand new Galaxy A72! We've added a faster screen, more megapixels in the camera and bit more faster charging than the A71. Are you ready to pay double the price of the A71's price a year ago for a slower processor? (At least it was like this here)
With the increased prices, one would expect improvement and better features but it's the other way round. You'll most likely have a phone without the jack, card slot and no charger, all while paying more. Worse case scenario, it's even shipped with inferior processors than the previous.

I think the gentleman in the interview was right, the next frontier of smartphones is a completely new form factor like hologram technology or wearable gadgets.
Isn't it always like that?. No one thought smartphone will replace laptops and computers as our primary communication tool.

This is the fourth year of my Galaxy Note 10 Plus. It has a great display, camera, processor, storage, and 5G... What else. When the phone debut in 2019, I knew the device was meant to last for almost a decade and four years later, I'm still right because Samsung hasn't deviated from that design ever since.
I'm still using mine too since 2019. However I'll move to the S23 Ultr later this year. Security patches are scheduled to end this year and I also don't trust the service centres in my country. Battery health is down to 85%. The centres might put in an inferior quality battery or remove other original components.
Still using my S10 plus which came with 512gb ram. Then I added 512gb memory card... I'm OK...
I'm sorry to break it you man, but the Note 10 Plus won't last a decade. It will stop receiving security and software updates well before then and probably should be replaced. Never mind, the technology gap by then will be huge. Look how phones like the S4 aren't even usable anymore as service providers don't support 3G phones

@zee as long as it works for you, I suppose. But the lack of updates doesn't work for me. I like to have the advanced features, and the security is important too. Neither does the lack of technology. I use my phone as a replacement for my laptop as often as I can, and I'm not willing to work with a phone that is outdated and slow. For me, it makes a big difference considering how often I use my phone
They are actively removing this things like headphone jack and chargers and making them expensive. This is their innovation these days
Removing SD Cards on Android phones are the most inexcusable.
Finally, glad someone said it. We also need to highlight toxic habits of companies to keep their 1000$ phone sales up every year (prematurely discontinuing models despite having very little upgrades for next year).

This infuriates me. What ELSE can you possibly improve. Just add variety and bring back headphones jacks, sd slots, etc
@@december8538sd slots actually have 2 problems. Reliability/another point of failure and profit since you make more selling the extra built in storage. SD slots just don’t make sense for a manufacturer to include.
How about adding back headphone jack and microsd card slot? Improving and increasing battery life? Expanding RAM and storage? The ideas to improve the devices are there. Just some corporations willing to go backwards to make an extra buck or two.
If iphone does all of that then Samsung will follow and do all of that again.
xiaomi midrange phones still have all that.
Why is a lack of headphone jack a downside? I am thinking of replacing my Samsung A5 2017 but most phones haven't got this now.

1)we are ok with the technology as it is now.
2) we don’t want to pay more
3) there are physical and or chemical limitations ( for bigger battery or better screen for example)
4) because of china … and manufacture process
5) because innovation is not just hardware , we as consumer want better software ( ia for example)

The phone can't replace more professional hardware, like pro cameras and more powerful laptops. It will remain stagnant as it will always be mediocre at everything other than portability
@@WoodChoppa911 You'll be surprised. Years ago people didn't think we'd even have phones that could do what they do now.
Battery is a bad example because it doesn't matter how big it is but rather how much power it can store per square inch, for example graphene batteries would hold twice as much battery in a smaller size compared to the lithium ion batteries we have now. Only issue is graphene isn't being manufactured efficiently, or in proper sheets
We are already paying over 1k for crappy devices. No need to pay more.
In the future, when they develop advanced battery tech, the users will certainly wonder how our generation coped with having to charge our phones a couple of times in a single day.

We grew up on multi day phones of our parents as well. I don't see anyone wondering about that today.
The only improvement is needed is in areas of consumption by os. Storage, memory and battery usage reduction

I got excited for the iPhone mini. I purchased the 12 mini used it for 2 years then bought the 13 mini and kept the 12 mini as a back up. Smartphones will never be under 6 inch screen again. Sucks for people who don’t want phablets and I refused to go back to foldables. Mini FTW

Here's an idea: Make some reasonably sized phones again. You know, like the kind we used to be able to operate with one hand. You could market them as "multi-tasking compatible" as you have a whole other hand you can do other things with.

Don't want an iPhone, because it's an iPhone, and the Zen is still too large. I'm talking about a phone that a person with an average sized hand can support with their pinky and reach the entire screen with their thumb. The last example of an android phone that had decent specs (at the time) and that was this small was the Sony Xperia XZ2 compact, which I'm writing this on and praying it hangs on another couple years so I'm not forced into a much larger phone soon. The argument I always hear against smaller phones is "but they can't house a big enough battery". Says who? Why do we need a battery that goes any longer than a day under normal use? Don't we all sleep at night???

They aren’t talking about smartphones, they are talking about either feature phones (smartphone predecessor) or dumb phones (feature phone predecessor).
No you're just jaded and living on the bleeding edge of tech. These devices have never done more and done it so well. The next challenge is gently lowering the cost while keeping them dependable.

Smartphones are at their peak level in terms of any drastic innovation( other than some overhyped ones) and so we can see only minimal upgrades every year... And those foldable and flexibles are super expensive when compared to a normal smartphone...

the Nokia Lumia line had unique devices in terms of design and functionality and beautiful construction. To this day I miss using one.
I still have my iPhone X and I have been putting off upgrades since 2020. I might do the same this year although I want to treat myself. But with rumors of some polarizing features being introduced on the iPhone 15, I might actually either upgrade to an iPhone 14 or wait another year until the iPhone 16 Pro Max if Apple continues to support my iPhone with iOS updates. These things are expensive.
Same, I had the X since 2018 but now the only phone that I interested is the s23 ultra (because I never own a galaxy note or a phone with that design before) but it is way too expensive for my daily usage.

If top comapnies like Apple and Samsung can reduce their profit margins by $100 /150 for flagship phones , those will be a lot more worthy

Software is holding them back being reliant on Google and android so they’re not investing meaningfully in making better use of all that processing power. Samsung has great potential with stuff like dex and the galaxy up-cycling program but they seem to lack the vision and polish make any of it flourish. Also investing in in-house gaming studios and app development that can build better quality experiences that raise the standard of the market is lacking on android. Apple has been doing it but at this point it feels like they’re dragging their heels on purpose as the competition is so far behind in these areas so consumers lose out on both sides.
Huawei is developing their own OS. I think it is being used in China already. If allowed, it would be great to have their alternative.
There's a lot of innovative smartphone companies but most ppl treat them as a fashion item so they only care about branding and camera (Samsung, Apple, Google basically) and a lot of the innovative companies like ZTE's underscreen camera, Xiaomi's extremely fast, wireless charging tech, or even Red's failed modular phone were being ignored by most people.
Two things i need
1. Week long battery life
2. Projector

Certainly, projections wouldn’t be bad. It could replace the need for a television set. It would be a huge disruption to the tv industry especially if the phones maintain quality images and a wide screen area. It certainly would be a huge hit in Africa 🌺🦢🇬🇭
Im fine with the current phones
Now companies are starting to remove features that seam unesessery for them (FM Radio, headphone jack, sdcard, ir blaster, etc)
And suprise, suprise, their new phone does not get any cheaper because of that
So instead of leaving their phones as is, by removing features, they are putting people off upgrading, so people that need those features will now be even less tempted to upgrade

I think android users have better options than Apple same design every year. Am using s20, and my next phone may likely be zenfone 9,
Phone manufacturers are only taking away features now and charge a lot more than before. I'm sticking to my old iPhone SE because of the headphone jack. I want to be able to charge and talk/listen to music at the same time without having to carry dongles around / remember to charge my bluetooth headphones. Wireless headphones are also really expensive and the audio quality isn't that great. They require you to carry around a charging box. I tend to lose and forget things (and no, I'm not old or senile). I also like having a smaller phone.
I generally love new tech, but not at the cost of usability, affordability and convenience. Manufacturers should make new devices more usable, not less (e.g. by adding another lightning port or making affordable wireless chargers that can fit in your pocket). Before 2017, a newer phone actually meant better and more usable. They were also much more affordable ($99/$199 to upgrade with AT&T, ended around 2016). But that's not the case anymore. Now getting a new model means lost functionality and forking out $1000+.
A further problem with the industry is that smartphone companies try a little too hard to make a profit based on how they want to innovate. That is, a portion, whether minor or significant, of their products may be a item they have made that NO one wanted. Annual product development cycles tends to also have had an impact on how companies have turn out with making money --> too little time to finalise the innovation, resulting in them saying Umm actually, the idea will be ready to be implemented onto the next phone next year not this phone this year. Not to mention, population control has also had some effect on the money making pattern of the industry plus inflation has hit the globe.... hard.
Not too long after automobiles were invented, people thought there would be flying cars by late 1980s...

Removing features is the big idea nowadays. Making them worse is the thing.
That's always been the thing when people with less income could afford the same things as people with higher incomes.
Only innovation is price.
They serving us same thing every year,with bigger price,and not a single reason to upgrade,if you already have flagship phone from 2019 or 2020.
There was a time that they slow down phones with software just so you go and buy new one. They can't do that today,even 3-4 year old phones are as fast as desktop computer,you just can't slow that hardware down without consequences.

Bring back the headphone jack. Bluetooth headphones are nice but battery life/pricing and connection efficiency is not at the point where we can just do away with wires. Your listening experience is halted when you need to recharge, which is slow and runs out quick - the price of wireless headphones are still much more than your wired ones - and the connection still can drop out. Not to mention that they are easier to lose. Enough is enough. When did having LESS options become the norm for improvement?
In resume: yes, because technology doesn't allow more innovation at the moment, plus, many users doesn't change of phone that often because economy as it is today.
The Next Big Thing in Smartphone Tech would be Foldable Phones with Affordable Price. The current models are very expensive. That is why it's market share is very less.
Folding a phone is a pointless gimmick. Whatever the price.
Havent you heard that folding phones are dying and just for less than .01% of world population. The future is AR glass as accessory with iPhome or android phone where videos can be played at any size of screen at your wall etc…and AR games and travelling
I have a folding phone ( samsung z fold 4) and its too bulky. The larger screen hasn't made much of a difference

Alot of people don't really care anymore. I think it was Apple's philosophy of 'it just works'. And most OEMs are rapidly perfecting that. I think that is why the focus is shifting towards wearable tech because that really is the future. Nobody cares if you have an iPhone 30 in 2023- if it works and gets the job done then great. It will take a LOT of innovation for OEMs of smartphones to convince people to upgrade devices for reasons that makes sense....a foldable is pretty. But we have backpacks that can house laptops,tablets and our phones in our pocket. Normal consumers wants to consume- not be consumed by the idea of impracticality
Foldables are actually more practical when we have mastered how to build them. More screen estate means we can use it for more productive tasks such as note taking in a uni class rather than having to use a tablet.

It puts too much demand on the non-removable battery.
Better to put loads on a tablet and keep the phone for essentials since they are now as essential as having your wallet.

@@Qwami well, everyone’s got iphones. Even the poorest of the poor own them. People were starting looking down upon me whenever I pulled out my cheap, beaten up Android. Some even sell their kidneys to buy iPhones. Luckily all my organs are still intact. But i pretty much wiped out all mine and my wife’s savings, buying this phone.
I'd say yeah, but only because there already basically perfect. Unless your doing editing or digital art I use my phone for literally everything. What I would change is to use higher quality materials, tighter buttons, better haptics, steonger metal,and mayb use metal on the back as well but without loosing the wireless charging.
People will never be satisfied that’s the result of consumerism
What’s needed are devices that are hands free, like smart glasses (google glasses were the first step), or contact lenses that act like a smartphone, or a display that follows you wherever you go ( dare to dream).

Software is what has made smartphones so powerful. It is a gift and a curse.
Before the iPhone in 2007, each manufacturer had their own software, meaning developers had to create apps for many phones.
With two major operating systems now, iOS and Android, you have to cater a device to fit those software standards.
Software developers must rethink their entire design if they create a new form factor.
Smartphone makes have come to a standstill with innovation . They took the work of the camera, video camera and torchlight. Now, what they are doing is just more of the existing. They basically stole the ideas of many.
The next would be healthy usage of phone interns of time, internet life etc

I don’t think the future of the smartphone is with the device itself, but what you’ll be able to do with them. Smart watches, smart glasses, AR, these things have and will change our lives and how we interact with everything

Small 5 inch screen phones I need now. This 7 inch screen is big in length to handle in one hand. Miss those 2018 phones.
Yes, look at iPhone 11 Pro Max perfect in my opinion ahead of it’s time with iPhones. However now iPhone 12, 13, 14, and 15 don’t have much differences like sure software and size but that isn’t anything new we have never had before. I believe it will take some genius idea that will make phones become something unreal and never thought of before.

I think the new revolution we will see is the separation of the features of a smartphone in diferent devices. I got really interested in the new Sony walkman, sometimes I want to go out while listening to my music without being bothered by messaging apps, or I want to take photos on a device with great lenses. Or a device only for social networks and messaging. Or an Android gaming device. As we see more and more diferent kind of devices connected to the internet less we are going to see smartphones.
I’d like to see iPhone package a pro max phone in an iPhone mini body. I’ve had both phones and chose to stick with the mini because it is a phone I could use with one hand. I miss the camera on the max but I’m sticking with the mini until I see a better camera on a newer version mini.
We had foldables back in the "dumb phone" era.

I mean at this point you can only add so much more ram, make the bezels so much thinner, make the processing speed faster, make the screens so much shaper and bigger and on and on
Smartphones have hit their threshold now. You can't reinvent the wheel anymore.
Take cars, they get upgraded every year but end of the day they all do the exact same function, some are naturally made better with more features but until they start flying or something the threshold has been hit decades ago.
Phones have reached it as well. Now it's really just about can you make the batteries last longer, better cameras, more storage and a bit faster but that's all they are really doing to get people to upgrade every few years.
Like someone said stuff like a foldable phone is just gimmicks not really pushing the technology forward.
And it's not a bad thing either, they are still amazing devices and it's great the market is so saturated these days practically everyone can own one now and everyone stays connected.
But the WOW factor will never be there again.
How about a MORE SECURE phone operating system and application store. Everything wants access to YOUR PRIVATE DATA!!!!! 😤
Honestly, I am more surprised at the 74% smartphone penetration of the US.
To be honest I’d take my green LG Neon back over any upgraded smartphone. I miss the days when phones (electronics in general) were so unique to the individual. Now everything looks the same.😪
I can tell you this, since release of first iphone in 2007, industry is changed. There is no more need of major physical changes on smartphones. Most of changes or updates can be done digitally on screen.
Using my phone for 4 years and it is even a mid range samsung M30s and might use it for 1 one year before buying a new one because it is working very smooth

I know at least 20 people who've been unable to find their iphones even though we know for a fact that Apple HAS access to that info.
Right now I'm using a Samsung with Android 5.0. Phone works perfectly except, 1) Seems like 1/2 the apps won't work & only has enough memory for maybe 6 apps. 2) PIN can easily be defeated by doing factory reset in recovery mode. Most apps can be replaced with websites on a browser that does same things, except apps like McDonalds force you to download the app if you try to use coupons or points on their website. So instead of apps, I download bookmarks onto my home screen from my browser & they look like & function like apps, including notifications. So, yes my phone is quickly going obsolete.
To be fair, most of what the industry is now is just “copy whatever Apple and Samsung are doing” and thats it. People know what they want, the market knows what they want, the point of making gimmicky phones just for them to not sell is unfortunately not a thing.
People are happier spending more on a more premium device that is supported and lasts longer, than a phone that quickly falls behind the requirements of the modern world. My second gen iPhone SE is still going strong, im not really missing anything from buying the newest iPhone or Galaxy, it would only be an inconvenience to buy a new phone.

there's nothing groundbreaking actually. now they are all the same. the only thing people actually want is better batteries. it feels strange to have great phones but run out of batteries after a heavy use in the day... but i love foldable phones. a lot of millennials who grew up on motorola clam shell phones love seeing a smart version of it. besides, it helps cut down screentime, which is why it's become my workphone/daily driver now.
Just bring back the headphone jack and expandable memory and why did these companies decide to remove the charging brick from the box? It makes no sense. I refuse to buy any of the flagships because of this. It makes no sense to remove features and things that you would actually need in order to use their product. Phone manufacturer - " Here's your phone, you have to go and buy your own charger. " Customer- " Oh, thank you. " Nonsense, yet people still run out and pay more to get less.

I buy used or refurbished phones that are 1-2 models old. I recently bought a Galaxy Z Flip 3 for $340 refurbished on Amazon and my Galaxy Z Fold 2 when the 3 just came out brand new in the sealed box for $900 on ebay (less than half the price when it was new. I'm no longer buying phones when they just come out. That's just dumb and a waste of money lol.
I know Samsung has DeX but using your phone as a computer needs to become a proper thing. Really decent 1st party foldable keyboards that can be optionally attached to the phone. Use the phone as a trackpad and have a laptop style case to optionally put it all in. Again, I know it’s already been done, but not properly. The problem is, that would mean less revenue for manufacturers so they probably won’t do it.

I think that the next trend for smartphones is to not have one.Just a phone with internet emails and photos.All these adverts and cookies and hackers can drive you insane .I hate them and I have had them since my car phone and have spent a fortune on them ..No more gimmicks.The original IPhone was an incredible leap in technology. Now they don’t know what to sell us .100’s of passwords and writing your email address 50 times a day ..Doing other peoples jobs.Whatever you do,don’t ask someone to write your phones number or email address down on paper.
I upgrade my iPhone every 5 years. I don’t run and upgrade every single year. That is ridiculous. It’s expensive and everyone knows Apple is NOT cheap!

In short answer... Yes. And truth be told Samsung really didn't innovate that much. Much of what Samsung was doing was done by LG and Motorola. As soon as LG stopped making phones I knew the innovations with the smart phones would cease at least from the Android side. LG was probably the most innovative of the phone makers. They just didn't have the popularity that Samsung did, which is why they shut down their phone division. LG really did make quality phones.
Credit where it's due Samsung doesn't just do one half assed trick and then go on to the next thing. They try to make it work, appeal to the masses.
In short answer... No. The obvious next step for smartphones is to replace normal computers with them. Flagship phones and some midrange phones are as powerful as upper-midrange laptops with premium integrated graphics. Check out Samsung DeX, Motorola ReadyFor, Huawei EMUI Desktop Mode and Honor Magic Desktop Mode.
You said LG made quality phones but their phones from around 2013 to 2018 always had some quality control issue.
Just don’t run a bloated software on your smartphone. World is full of low level quality applications that are draining battery life
