I'm just a guy in Kansas playing around in his garage. Come along in my adventures riding, racing, modifying and repairing my small fleet of unusual misfits. - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
It's also a fire blanket in many cars. If the engine is on fire it melts the tiny clips that hold it and it falls onto the engine to smother the flames.
Sound db is logarithmic. A 3 db increase in sound pressure double the loudness.
I think you mean 10 dB, but yes, it should be noticeably quieter, even with such thin and flimsy insulation
Y'all both wrong. Mathematically 6db is double, 10 is perceived double (by human ears) 😅
2db thats amazing, I guess that is Amazon. still every 3db is double the sound so maybe it is more effective than that stat.
You can easily lower the decibels by sticking some heat/fire resistant alubutyl mats - not too expensive, yet effective
Aparently they shrink from heat and then they will keep falling off until the owners get tired of them and throw them out. Mine is still barely hangin on. I have considered buying a new one but why throw away something that more or less is still working.
I don't believe you - my audi A6 still has one and has 210k miles
@@mountains889 My E92 has just over 200000 km/120000 miles and the hood insulation is still there. It's probably the orginal one but it is not hanging on as well as it should anymore. I've heard that the steam from an overheating engine is especially bad for the insulation because it will make it shrink.
But if you live in a not too hot climate and your car has been well taken care off, the insulation could last for a long time.
Also leave your car for a week and it becomes a nest for mice
On some vehicles its a safety feature. In case of an engine fire, the heat would melt the plastic pegs on the underside of the hood. The fabric would then collapse on the engine and smother the fire as the underhood insulation is nonflammable.
I think people end up getting oil or coolant explosions in the engine bay and so throw it out and don't replace it because I'm sure it's $200 or more from the dealer ($150 from FCP)!
If 297 % Tyler had installed the hood insulation it wouldn’t go past 57 decibels. Great video 101%Jake ❤
I took mine off to hear my turbo better
how about dont check the sound level at the crack between the hood and fender, and instead where the deadening is. or further away.
"we're gonna be scientific about it". Pulls out an uncalibrated guesstimate iPhone that shows +/-5db depending on the angle you hold it ....
It works better if you do the brown wire mod.
Probably.
Mine got chewed on by something during the winter 😣. "Shaved" it best I could, and spray painted the yellow innards that were showing. Not easy or cheap to get a hood liner for a G8,!
Decides doesn't measure off of pitch either. Often under the engine noise deadening kills most if the high pitched whine and ticking.
just a thought. maybe everybody in your area throws them away because your summers are so damn hot and they're worried about their car is overheating. I realize that where you guys are at you still get winter but not like we get up here in the great white north. appear someone through one of those away it would be the equivalent of olden times when someone stole a horse. You would be beaten or jailed. not only is it to dead noise but it's also to keep heat from escaping during cold months of the year when your engine needs it. not trying to talk down to you or any of the fans you probably already knew that.
Hey Jake... 2° iz plenty...
Hott here too... Trinidad and Tobago 🇹🇹
They get dirty sometimes fall off or just get in the way my z4 and 944's are both long gone not losing any covers on ny focus st
New Volvo's after 2021 don't even come with them anymore :/ Cost cutting I guess because the VEP Gen 4's sound even worse.
Mine had been tortured by the exhaust and probably eaten by something so had fallen apart and was dropping down and touching the exhaust so as a safety precaution i removed it.
lol All you did was make the car heavier. But seriously, maybe the OEM is better made?
The oem does exactly what its ment to do, reducing noise. Not like this trash amazon thing from china here lol. Engine covers have the same effect and are ment to protect electric stuff from splashing water
No thats mouse food just like new wire harnesses are
I like to hear what my engine is doing I'd rather notice an issue than have a 3 decibel increase I also took my beauty cover off
He's a true mechanic, check out the hammer…
Ayy Miata gang
I remove it because I want spooly boi noises better
They fall out and people trash them
I don't understand the attraction of noisy cars. Manufacturers spend many dollars to make their cars quiet, and then stupid people do annoying things like muffler deletes.
Yea when you have a n52 I wouldn’t want to hear that piece of shit either
Falls off an burns the car down
Wut?
