  • In this video Dog Reactivity Training purely positive or balanced Training? Thomas takes you through his process of evaluating a reactive dog with an owner who has come from Philly after trying 6 different trainers to address this problem. This dog attacks other dogs while on the leash on walks. After 6 trainers this problem continues as the owner discusses how this has been getting worse as her dog attacks other dogs at the dog park. Thomas discusses past dog training methods used and the owners experience with the past training experiences. This series will take you from in the door at the ACA through the behavior modification process to help build a stronger relationship between dog and owner. Thomas discusses the differences between purely positive dog training and balanced training and the effectiveness of both. We hope that this video helps owners to understand their dogs behavior and the most effective ways to address their dog training challenges.

    Awesome. Her walk across the parking lot led by the dog said almost everything.
    First time I met my moms full grown but young shepherd I was told by my brother “you can’t go in there she’ll bite you”.
    My mom lived 1,000 miles from me and frequent visits just weren’t possible so I’d only heard stories of how bad and mean Gypsy was.
    I walked into my mom’s room and Gypsy stood at the side of the bed my mom was lying on baring her teeth, growling and barking.
    I turned around and quietly softly but not timidly sat on her.
    She quietly went to the floor with almost no effort.
    My mom asked “What are you doing?” I said “Sitting on your dog” as I slid farther down and laid the back of my head on Gypsy’s chest.
    My asked again “What are doing?” and I said “Watching TV”.
    Gypsy was mine and she might have been a bit confused but she knew I was there for her.
    When my mom got sick Gypsy came to me. She’d lived @ 9 yrs in a trailer with little room and now had 2 acres and 4 other dogs to run around with. Eventually my mom came as well.
    I was told I couldn’t do it because she was too mean.
    Gypsy wasn’t mean. She was insecure because my mom treated her like a human and she didn’t know how to be a dog.
    She outlived my mom and I can still see her when I do a Google map search.
    When I left the house and came home she was always in the front yard even though she could go freely into or out of the house so the google map people captured her on video as she stood up and followed the google car with her head. It’s cool as I always wondered what she did when I wasn’t home until the day i came home and she wasn’t out front. She’d stood her last post.
    Dogs have a natural hierarchy but like all children they have to be taught and allowed to be dogs.
    Like too many children today she didn’t learn the rules when she was young and people just judged her for her actions and put labels on her.
    Who’s smarter the dog that comes to us, sits, rolls over and instinctively will coral a loose baby pig,,, or the the human who says “What?” when a dog barks?
    There is definitely truth to being positive but there is more truth to being taught how to be who you are supposed to be. The trick is to teach without anger and without taking it personal.
    Dogs and children need to know who’s in charge and know they are safe.
    A good pack leader can do both and both dogs and children can feel that.
    I was at a park the other day with my 4yo granddaughter who loves to pet dogs and teaching her not to just run up to them. I prefer to let people walk their dogs in peace but cute little children have the same affect on many dog walkers as dogs have on children walkers.
    A woman had a Beautiful large American bulldog and said Mayah could pet him but I could see her apprehension as Mayah and I approached. She was in the middle of saying the dog wasn’t good with men and might be aggressive as the dog quietly started sniffing me and licking my hand. The look of peoples faces as they have ‘OMG my dogs not attacking you’ moments is always kinda funny.
    Dogs know people.
    Too bad more people don’t know dogs.
    Sorry so long.
    Between 2019 and 2021 I lost my mom and all 5 of my dogs from old age etc including Gypsy Magic. My oldest was Austin a 16yo golden lab quiet daddy of my pack. I miss them all but I have not replaced them.
    I use to have a zoo with 10 dogs, 6 cats, ducks, chickens, pigs, snakes, etc Even had a gator come visit on his own etc. I have one white fuzzy cat left. His name is Fuzzy. He comes and goes using Gypsy’s doggie door which I put in specifically because she had never been potty trained AND she needed the freedom. It was funny teaching all the other dogs they could freely go in and out the door without me walking through first but Gypsy had no problem. Great dog. The doggie door is too short for me but my 4yo granddaughter still loves it.

    My dog is totally changed with e collars. She walks off leash. We pass 20 deer a day - within 100 feet - no chasing. Before e collar; I actually threw a roasted chicken to get her to come to me! LOL. Life is so much better for both of us.

      It's really doing a disservice to dogs, too. Dogs and owners deserve to live a better life and quite frankly, most people don't have the time (vs a trainer) to train as much as is needed for PP to MAYBE work.

      @@tomdavisofficial 7 months later: yes! :)
      When they run, lunge and bark at people we MUST put a stop to it. It's not sweet, it's not with cookies. It's a real STOP. They must learn that if they do that there's a bad consequence. Or else they'll never stop doing it and it will escalate. My dog is adopted, he didn't grow up with me, he doesn't have my rules and routines ingrained. He's slowly learning. He barked at men, chased anything on wheels, and I couldn't reprimand him on time nor effectively. It happened way too fast for me to correct and he was so obsessed that he didn't hear me. Yelling, calling, trying to catch him made it worse. He teased me and ran and barked more. If I punished him with my hands or a chain collar he cut me off. He stopped obeying me, respecting me. He's very sensitive. But this behaviour
      was dangerous for me and my dog. I tried the small approaches and candies for almost a year. It didn't work. I tried obedience classes. They never got pass the basic tricks. I told them what I needed and they tried to "build the relationship" (play as if we didn't play, rewards...) when they saw how he snapped they told me to get a chain choke collar. It didn't work. I could pull it, and the only thing I got was a sad dog. Since I tried the e-collar...LIFE SAVING. It's his passport to freedom. I taught him the come with a light pull and shock Larry Khron style. And I was very careful. But honestly, as another trainer on youtube says: "small actions, big consequences". When he barked/lunge/ran to someone, it was highest shock. He feels it! And he snaps out of it and now he plays in the park without running to anyone, bikes, skates etc. If he stares, I say "it's a person, leave it" and he leaves it and comes to me. He doesn't know I'm the one behind the shock. It's god...
      And to anyone that is concerned about the pain: my dog chipped my tooth while playing. He kicked his teeth against mine and kept playing. I was in tears. Sometimes we bump our heads into each other. He keeps playing. Watch how dogs play with each other. It's aggressive and they don't feel pain. Depends on their size, but my dog is very compact and tough. The maximum shock scares him, takes him by surprise, hurts a bit like a bite. But it passes. And he's happy.
      Trust Upstate Canine, SolidK9 and Larry Khron. And leave other trainers to teach cute tricks.

      @tinytrainer1417 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      MM BB well if that’s true, how the hell has my dog gone from a spinning, lunging, terrified, barking mess around dogs, to a pretty chill, alert, clear dog that focuses on me when dogs are around?
      I started out using corrections and all that, but stopped. As it never fixed the real problem, fear. It just stopped the behavior that showed it.
      I mean, if that’s what you want, that’s the way to go. If you just want to stop the behavior and ignore the problem, then yeah, e-collar works. But if you wanna fix the actual problem, I wouldn’t recommend punishment as it won’t change the feelings, just the actions.

    I so so so appreciate your balanced training. I adopted my dog almost a year ago, and learning how to be flexible between positive and balanced training has been essential. I wouldn't have been able to make any progress without changing how I view training. My dog is young and came from a puppy mill which trained him to see most things as a threat or competition. Using balanced training has given him the best life possible, where he knows he safe, but I'm in charge. thank you!!

    Such a refreshing explanation. The way you communicate with the owners is almost more impressive than with the dogs. This particular video highlights that substantially. You’re not condescending which is hard when you hear such silly concepts - something I probably need to work on! I was in a similar situation. I put my female GSD in puppy classes and socialized her since day one but she started getting very leash reactive towards other dogs and people. She was also biting me while we were on walks and at home.I tried private lessons with a only positive trainer but her behavior was getting worse. I was afraid to take her for a walk or even be alone with her. I decided to put her in a board and train where she was E-collar trained and that saved me from having to get rid of her. She went in to the board and train with extremely unmanageable behaviors and came out a totally different dog in a good way. She is now happy and balanced with pretty much all of her bad behaviors gone. Every day I take her out with no fear. I learned not only is it ok to say no to her, it's crucial that she understands what she can and cannot do. I have to say that the E-collar training she had literally saved her life and I am so thankful I chose the board and train over getting rid of her.

    This is why it’s important to not always award your dog or any dog you’re training with treats always, the end goal is using your voice alone. I’m also shocked this girl said someone told her not to tell her dog “no.” First off, whatever word the owner wants to use will be the word, the goal is to train the dog with that word. It’s funny to me, I use no treats in training other than if a dog is responding very well or if there’s a very aggressive dog that will not come out of their room. Otherwise, I use my voice, my body language and my “vibe” if you will.

    I wish I could export my pitbull to you for a while. It makes sense, I have been to a couple of trainers with mine. Nothing worked so far. He loves treats although once he is fixed on something, there is no distracting him and the second I go to pull him he goes into attack mode. He even uses his neck strength to defeat the head harness so it doesn't turn him away.

    Honestly I feel like this owner *thinks* she is training her dog right but is fundamentally misunderstanding positive/reward based training.
    I don't know of ANY reputable trainer that doesn't believe in any form of discipline.
    Usually it's about withholding reward, punishing in non physically jarring ways.
    I can't argue that upstate dog acad gets really quick results, but you can bet your ass that if I had a dog from 1 year old that was a "bad dog" I could get him to walk well on leash in maybe a week without using any prongs or shocks.

    I was told to give my dog Hemp oil, in order to keep him relax and calm. He won’t jump and bark other dogs anymore.
    What do you think about that ...

      @thethoughtpot8523 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question, wondering the same thing. Can an anxious/reactive dog that is "calmed/relaxed" using hemp/cbd learn better or faster simply because it is not as stressed? Or does it simply make the dog "high/drugged", and actually slow or interfere with the learning process and the retention of what is being taught?

    This guy lacks an ego which is probably the most important thing because when a human ego meets a behavioral problem the trainer doesn't know how to solve, abuse will happen because the trainer will not admit that he doesn't know what he's doing. If he's doing something that doesn't work, he will ask himself "why isn't this working? what can I do about it? How can I change what I am doing to help this dog."

    We introduced a 7months old dog into an already established house of 2 dogs (both 1 year old). All dogs are Olde English Bulldogs. The smallest of the dogs (not the new pup) became very aggressive with the new pup. Aggressive in a way of horrible fighting, cuts and blood. I believe he is anxious and gets overwhelmed. Any ideas on how to break the fighting issue without having to get rid of him?? I am desperate for help!! Any advice would be helpful! Thank you so much!

    Every time I hear someone talk about "balanced" dog training, I can't help but shake my head. This term has quickly become a euphemism for training that uses both positive reinforcement along with physical punishment and/or physical corrections. The term itself is indicative of the key phrase those of us in the so-called "purely positive" camp hear so often:
    "There isn't just one right way to train a dog."

    Maybe this will get a comment or two back lol but I rescued a husky and German Shepherd mix from the shelter and she is very well one of the smartest dogs I have seen. She is one and a half years old, was house broken within a couple of weeks and knows many basic commands that she will do very easily at home. But she is not treat driven and toys only work when she is at home. I got her a prong collar to teach her to walk without pulling and she doesn’t pull anymore but I cannot get her attention no matter what I try. When I do get her to look at me even for a second, I do reward her with vocal praise, attention and petting and I did try with treats some times but she zones right back out. And it’s much worse with distractions. It’s nearly impossible for me to train her outside of home because she doesn’t want to even acknowledge I am there when I walk her or try to teach her heel or tell her to sit during a walk. And I can’t get her attention long enough when someone visits to where I can correct her when she goes to jump on them or even when they ring the doorbell. And I cannot find any trainers near me that knows how to condition her behavior without treats or toys.

      Hi, so I'm no expert. But from my experience I've had some success doing a few things. First I like to go with the nothing in life is free strategy. The dog has to do something in order to get his food. It's also hard to train a dog after he's fully fed. So I like to start on an empty stomach. Just so that the dog is easier to work with and eager to work for the food. So as far as attention goes. It will take some time. Start off at home with little distractions. Every time he looks at you say good and reward immediately. You're not asking him to do anything at this time. You're just finding those moments he does look up at you and reward them. Little by little he will get the hang of it. You can also add more to this by teaching him his name. So say your dogs name and say good treat when the dog looks at you. As you progress you keep working on the attention through food and toys. For example if I give my dog food on his bowl. He has to look at me first before I allow him to eat. When playing fetch. The dog is not allowed to get the toy unless all eyes are on me and i give him the cue to fetch. If the dog loves petting. Only give petting when he looks up at you. So you start building that foundation. After a few weeks then you can start training in a low distraction environment and expect him to look at you once in a while. Stay relaxed and reward when he gives eye contact. If he looks at something and looks back at you reward. Slowly build up the distraction levels. A lot of times if a dog is not taking food in a certain environment it could be the dog is too stressed and there's too much stimulus. They hear and smell wayy better than us so imagine all that input coming all at once. I generally never allow my dog to stay too focused on anything while walking. It depends a lot on the energy and body language I'm receiving. The point I try to communicate while walking with the dog is you must focus walking next to me. That's the job. As far as visitors you have to teach the dog place and not allow the dog to get off place unless you say so. If this helps you out or you find ways to improve upon it pass it along.

      R C I will definitely try working on rewarding as soon as she looks at me. I got her at four months old and I have had her for over a year now and she’s actually very well behaved just has some tough habits to break. I began training her not long after I got her but no one in the house would help me stay consistent in her training so she got into the habit of jumping on people when they come through the door and barking inappropriately and her leash manners aren’t very good 😅 now that it’s just me and her I am trying to be consistent with training her. I will definitely work on your advice. Thank you!

    • @RC-qu8xg
      @RC-qu8xg 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@vicsartlifeI feel you, it's tough not having that support in structured training. , However, after a couple days of attention training you can start looking for more eye contact on different tasks. You'll just be waiting for the eye contact to initiate any activity. For example, before entering or exiting a door wait for eye contact and reward. Then you can exit or enter. Even when I give my dog water. Eye contact first then I say good and release the dog to drink. In every activity you can apply the same strategy. Let me know how it goes and you're welcome.

    • @RC-qu8xg
      @RC-qu8xg 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Another thing to consider is that you have a highly active breed. So a walk is not going to do much. So when you take the dog out it could be it has a lot of energy and doesn't know where to direct it. I'd try draining out about 50-75% of the dogs energy at home with toy play. After that maybe try giving the dog a walk or jog. Also don't get used to going one direction. Switch it up, turn left then right, go forward then backward. Speed up then slow down. That could help the dog remain focused on following you. Everytime the dog follows you in change of direction reward. You can also teach a dog to run on a treadmill or take the dog running and hiking to fulfill the dogs exercise needs.

    • @RC-qu8xg
      @RC-qu8xg 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also when you are not teaching place I suggest you either kennel or pen up the dog in order to prevent the bad habits from continuing. Once the dog understands place and out about 1-2 weeks. If the dog gets out of place without permission I'd reinforce with body block pressure until the dog returns to its place. Once the dog returns to its place say good. If the dog gets out of place again I'd follow up with a prong correction. If you're not around I'd keep the dog in a pen just for the bad habits to stop. Also I wouldn't allow the dog to greet me at the door. Place first then a greet and pet can be given. These are just some of my suggestions. You can modify or improve upon depending on what works best for your dog.

    4 minutes in and my first assessment is the owner may not be fit for this dog...no patience, gets frustrated way too fast...as she interrupts him too often and she is in denial that she is major part of the problem. Sure maybe she just got 6 fake trainers but seems she is just negative and very very unexperienced but unwilling to learn as SHE IS PROBABLY DESTROYING THE GOOD TRAINING...we will see
