@@tomdavisofficial no such dog a a "pitbull". Its either and America pitbull terrier" or its not.. we have mislabeled dogs as "pitbulls" for too long. As a viewer I would appreciate current and correct terminology for the breed of dog your working with. Pitbull isnt even a dog it's a term in dog fighting used to describe a pit dog not a breed of dog. Do your research buddy. Great vidoe but it just is mislabeling if the breed. Not everything is a "pitbull".

@@Chaotic4Exotics still wrong, the American pit bull terrier is a entire class of dog. Dropping the prefix American isnt correct. Although if you did drop the American part it would still be in the "terrier group" of dog breeds. So no dropping a word isnt enough. Enjoy

Megan McLelland LOL, me too. He’s amazing to watch. I eventually do want to get a dog, but I need to get my yard fenced in first. I literally have saved the majority of his videos as favorites.
It's better though because I don't have a dog either but teaches me oh how to treat a dog when I do get one.

I love this. I kinda giggle when you are so polite about telling the owner that he is basically not being a leader. Dogs need to have leadership roles clearly cut out. I love your videos and I think it takes a really special person to work equally as well with people as with animals.

Upstate Canine Academy I just adopted a 5 yo 75lb Pitt who loves people but HATES dogs.. to the point he sees them- immediately goes tense & lunges. He spent the first 4 years of his life in a yard & he has some scars which the rescuer said she thought it was from him being a bait dog. He was also returned due to that reason. A trainer suggested I get him a muzzle for when I’m walking him- just wanted your opinion. I also bought him a no pull harness & 2 patches for the vest -NOT DOG FRIENDLY! And IN TRAINING DO NOT APPROACH!
@@misssamhain4334 I'm in the same situation (Lurcher, not a Pitbull) and did the same thing with the harness. My dog has been approached by loose dogs more than once and luckily they walked away from her while she was lunging. We got a muzzle (better safe than sorry).
Thank you for adopting a pittie. Our shelter is full of them. I don’t feel qualified to have a pittie and I don’t want the responsibility. I had to adopt a shelter dog transported out of Mississippi to find the affable mutt that I love.
Wow, it's impressive how the dog stopped barking as soon as you started putting pressure on the slip collar.
A little pressure to teach the dog what right from wrong is goes a long way!

Great video Tom. The pitbull lost his aggressive traits quite quickly. I love it when you bring out the black dog who understands commands in multi-languages. I'm home in South Australia now patiently waiting for the right German Shepherd rescue dog to become available for adoption.

I have a 4.5 years old golden retriever that has been with me for the last 6 months and we have come a long way thanks to your videos. I wish there are more professionals like you. The other day, I saw a trainer who looked at me as if I am a monster because my dog was with a prong collar and at the same time, he is pulling the lash like crazy when teaching dogs to heel and hitting dogs on the head to stop bitting. What a world we live in, unbelievable!

Prong collars are not for preventing pulling, you'll hurt your dog doing that. Please don't use a prong collar! Teach your dog to walk politely on a leash instead. Yes, I know it's not easy and takes a lot of work, but using a prong collar won't help either. And obviously don't hit your dog...
@@memicoot Yes it does, actually. Watch more of these videos. They pull, you pop, they get the message that "hey, if I'm rude I get pressure on my neck that I don't like". Dogs aren't stupid.
@@Spinogrl2000 Yeah they learn by your hurting them. Is that your preferred method for learning? There are more ethical methods that works just as well. No reason to resort to pain and intimidation.

No. But when my beagle squares up to the neighborhood pitbull and I can't do shit about it because I don't have chicken on me, it opened my eyes that my dog does not give a shit about my wishes if there's something he's more interested in. So yes, if it's between him getting mauled and him getting pressure on his neck, I'm putting pressure on his neck. I've had dogs I can use only positive reinforcement with with no issues and dogs (like my current one) I can't do anything but use negative reinforcement because, when it comes down to it, they'll do what they want. It all comes down to the individual dog. I don't care how "cruel" it seems, I'm making sure he doesn't get himself killed because he thinks it's cute to challenge dogs three times his size. I'm not going to be that small dog owner that watches my dog get eaten because I wasn't willing to make the hard decisions.
This is exactly what i needed. I have my prong collar and you have given me some more training ideas for walking my doberman. Love the "break" and "heel" command. He is almost a 1 year old and he gets it. It's just the distractions outside causing him to do the wrong thing at certain times. Great video!
I love how you said that the dogs you worked with a year- 5 years ago, does not reflect on you. It all depends on if the clients keep up with the exercises.
Dog training is not training dog. It is training human what to do with dog.

This is so true you need to train the owner more than the dog. I have a reactive Belgian malinois and I can’t tell you how many times I have given up. The main thing is consistency the owner should have a lot of patience and be consistent. One personal example why training the owner is more important than the dog, my malinois listens to my husband but not me! My dog is clever enough to distinguish who is in charge :/
@@ennypenny4527 I sympathize as I have a 4 year old Belgian mal that is also reactive to the leash, correction, and strangers. I've gone through 3 trainers so far and they don't know the breed well enough to help. I need the training just as bad as my dog!
I love how you shake out your own energy first as you start. I have to do the same when i go to wash my dog as he's not a fan, but if i stay calm with him and don't get frustrated it goes so much easier
Ummm - HELP! This is exactly my issue with my 5 y/o with a shelter like background! Extremely reactive for what seems like 2 reasons, fear and something you said in this video, “he doesn’t seem to know what else to do” - something moves and he flips out - the world goes on around him and he wants it to stop doing whatever it’s doing! I am happy I saw this video because I thought my guy was WAY TOO REACTIVE to see someone, but this video gives me some hope.

My two year old GSD is also like this. She doesn’t really lunge out at people as much as dogs but specifically big dogs. She can care less for small dogs. It’s a struggle. I spoke to a trainer and they suggested working on her confidence. So far I have seen improvement.
Jenstickels yes, that’s certainly a problem with my guy - his confidence .. he’s so unsure of himself and anything other than his house; what he IS sure of though, is that when he barks and puts on a display, all the ‘scary’ things go away - and not for anything, but MY confidence with him is slipping as well 🤦🏽♀️
Nicole Benacia I actually became scared of my dog at one point. She dragged me to get another dog. I was so scared and because obsessed with the fact that she would attack. But that was about 2 months ago. Now she is improving a lot just by taking her to new parks and having her climb play structures and benches. I take her to as many pet friendly store and walk her around. I also use a head collar which is the best purchase I’ve done! She hasn’t dragged me since and she is getting more comfortable and confident. Each dog is different I know but just doing these simple things has been helping her be the best dog she can be and along with that I’ve started to become a more confident dog mom as well

Lots of toys and calming music works with mine!! He's still got some behavior issues but that definitely keeps him happy at home!!

My Bella is a rescue pit, I got her last year on Halloween, seven days prior she was found on a pole left to die (with a bleeding hernia), I have been neglecting her aggressive behavior until now. She is aggressive when she sees other dogs, but not humans! I will definitely use this!

I think you're one of the few well balanced dog trainers around. You don't follow suit by only adhering to the "all positive reinforcement" methods. I appreciated the fact that you applied a consequence to lunging at the other dog then paid him with a resource after he complied.
....... the sustainability of the reactivity doesn't last because the food goes.

Can you make a video on how you get them to socialize after and how they do with a new person that comes in? I have a human reactive dog that won’t stop barking or lunging at anyone new that he hasn’t seen.
Make sure you keep the dog muzzled when new people are coming especially if he's lunging just so you protect yourself and the dog from getting sued or having the dog put down

I've had Nala now for going on two years shes a rescue. i cant have visitors i cant walk her with out a cage muzzle. I cant go on vacation because she only likes me and my two other senior dogs... I am soooo THANKFUL I WATCHED because i have been going back and fourth with the idea of giving up my girl.. That leash transfer move is genius! I will try this and I hope it works! You gave me hope i love my girl

This is SO helpful! Do you have any videos or information for people with multiple dogs and working on heeling? I have a reactive Catahoula and when we walk we do great until he reacts and then the dogs have that pack mentality making it very challenging.
They are such strong dogs! So are Chows. Only two breeds that were too much dog for me. Used to house and pet sit for friends and family before moving to Louisiana from Florida to live closer to my grandchildren.

My biggest issue is my dogs reactivity on leash. She just is incredibly over stimulated and I am having a hard time getting her to calm down when she sees other dogs on walks. With people she is fine and will ignore, it is just other dogs. Thank you for these videos it is very helpful!
You are one of the best trainers at reading the dogs body language that I have ever witnessed! Your an Extreme trainer! Unfortunately, I live in Georgia and can’t justify the trip to help with my Cane Corso problem. He is very reactive to ALL animals. Not in a violent way but instead in an insane “dude we’ve got to play right now!!” Way. I’ve tried slowly working him closer to other dogs at the dog park( we stay on the outside of the fence). I can get him calmed down and he is actually very gentle as he sniffs through the fence nose to nose. But. I can’t hold his attention “consistently” when there are other animals around, they are just of higher value to him. Any suggestions? He is very people friendly.
Love this. My Belgian mallinos is like this. Any helpful tips. My boy is little over 1yr old and he had became very reactive towards other dogs outside our pack. He barks, lunges up, pulls me. He's 92lbs so he got a lot of strength. Will mention he use not to be that way tull he was attacked sadly at a dog park from a ladies dogs she couldn't control or listen to her. He also know for some reason become reactive towards people as well when he use to not me. Use to take him to my work my daughters school Lowes and othe replace so he was able to see other dogs and other people.

Much needed video! This is my dog through and through, similar to this Pitbull, he's reactive to both humans and dogs but hes taking so long to train he's so damn stubborn urgh! Still struggling every single day but getting better.. I just resent my dog's previous owner so damn much everytime he reacts. He wasn't walked for 2 years of his life so naturally, unsocialized and a lot of pent up energy which led to his reactivity too. Their solution? To put him on a freaking bark collar but STILL NOT WALKING HIM. Not an ecollar btw but a legit bark collar and all it does is to literally electric shock your dog to the highest voltage till they stop barking. Doesn't even teach the dog any shit. But being from the spitz family, my dog is EXTREMELY stubborn so instead of stopping his barking behaviour, he redirected his barking to the previous owner and sometimes even bite due to extreme frustration. I seriously hope my dog improves with the right training I'm giving him now. Definitely not "positive only" training almost never works for stubborn dogs lol. tried it for months with one trainer it flopped big time. Total waste of time and money. Don't know whether it's just in Singapore but "positive only" trainers cost a shit ton.

That's so terrible your guy was on a bark collar. I think mine was too. He was so quiet the first month I had him and then he started to bark all the time because that's all he knew how to do. Positive training is really important with fearful dogs, you can really mess up your relationship otherwise. I have a reactive pitbull mix and it's taken us four months of positive reinforcement training to see a difference but it's finally getting there. Pitties don't do well with physical punishment. They are so tough ("gameness") that they just think you're upping the play anty if you swat at them! Please be careful with the trainer you choose.

He was used to ruling everyone and doing anything that he could without given any right instructions. I guess every dog is different in everyway and there's no one method for all dogs! 😊

My GSDs reactivity has been improving hugely since watching your videos and learning certain key moments so thank you for your usful videos! I'm over in the UK and prong collars are seen as the worst thing ever as well as e-collars.
I have a question about "staring", she likes to know what's going on with the other dog, if they're on the other side of the street/road her tail is nice and calm, hackles are not up and mouths open, looking fairly relaxed but she's staring, would you correct this behaviour and redirect her focus?

Just a suggestion for future videos. Have a mic on the owner so we can hear what they’re saying about the dog and their struggles, over the barking dog. and/or use subtitles. Might be helpful to begin the video with a meeting with the owner to discuss the situation with the dog not present. Great instructions, I’m truly not criticizing, just offering feedback in an effort to be helpful.
I have 2, 10 month old pups. One is a daniff and she's scared of everything and my pitbull who wants to greet everyone! We've been working really hard to teach her not to be scared and him some manners when meeting other dogs. He also sounds like a Tanzanian Devil when he growls.

Do you list what collars you use on each dog? At the end of the video it looks like he has two additional collars. I bought a herm sprenger prong collar but I am afraid the links are to big for my dog, mine is almost identical to this pup. Love your videos! Hope you come to San Diego for a work shop!

The video is great and shows how a dog behavior can change. Question is though as the owner how would he handle the dog with other people. He handed the dog to you and you took over but regular people won’t do that so how would that work? Just wondering because I have an amstaff that does the same thing. Lunges at people and dogs.
I usually watch your vids on my TV and the dogs love watching from their place/s. This one, I was like “nahhh, that barking will set them off for sure” but I realised this is an awesome, safe opportunity to work on remaining in place. My WSS used to carry on just like that, I feel for the owner but I’m also proud of him for recognising the problem & being willing to work with his dog to improve their life together. Changin’ lives erryday, Tom!
