    I am thrilled to see an obesity MD thinking outside the box and addressing how the body functions instead of pushing pills. Bravo, Dr. Westman! I have personally been on this diet 10 days and have lost 8#, to date. I have not been hungry at all. For me, this is so much more effective than fasting, and much more practical. Certainly an idea who's time has come.

    • @Jefferdaughter
      @Jefferdaughter 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bravo, Debra! Have you tried time-resticted eating? Limiting food consumption to an 8 or even 6 hour window each day? The idea is to eat as much as we want during that time, but then to give our bodies time to digest, then repair, instead of eating almost the entire time we are awake. This works great by itself for some people, and can compliment a keto or low-carb diet, too.
      After adapting to a low carb or keto diet, many people find time restricted eating easy. Then fasting from dinner one day to dinner the next becomes easy.
      Some people find fasts up to 2 or 3 days, while drinking plenty of water, or course - to be beneficial. Other people feel they are doing just fine of low-carb or keto alone. Dr. Jason Fung MD has some good videos on fasting, if you have not seen them yet, and are interested. He also started an Intensive Dietary Management Program. He supports the low-carb high fat and keto approach, but found that many of his patients could not follow those, so he recommends fasting for them. Whatever works!

    It’s sad that more docs don’t tell you to do this, but I’m glad that my cardiologist did tell me stop eating carbs! I did and have lost 25 lbs in 2 months! I’ve been studying keto and it can get quit confusing at first, but if you keep studying it you will understand it more. All of my other drs kept telling me to loose weight but never told me about carbs, wow I could have had lost weight a long time ago. I haven’t felt this good since I was younger and a lot thinner😀 thank you for this video Dr. Westman....there is a lot of non believers out there! Sad

      What carbs were you eating? Your supposed to be eating whole grains, potatoes, legumes, vegetables, and some fruit. Your not supposed to be eating oil, sugar, processed foods. I have never seen anyone overweight eating potatoes and broccoli or rice and vegetables. Why dont you be honest with yourself and everyone and list all the foods you were eating and i guarantee you its gonna be full of processed foods like oil, sugar, commercial desserts, commercial whit breads, dairy products, animal fat and meat galore.

    • @dmosey870
      @dmosey870 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What's sad is people continuing to blame carbs for all the dietary woes in our modern culture simply because we have bastardized them by refining them and removing all the fiber and nutrients. People associate carbs with sugar, bread and pasta and get completely thrown off track. They also don't realize that a typical "high carb diet", within the Standard American Diet framework, is not only high in refined carbs but high in fat! Look at all of the typical foods people tend to consume and you'll see this to be true: Pizza, hamburgers, french fries, chips, mac & cheese, spaghetti and meatballs, hot dogs, etc, etc. It's just a damn shame that this misconception is so wide spread. People blame carbs yet don't realize that a whole food/plant based diet is naturally high carb and is the hands down the best diet for health and longevity. Stop eating highly processed food with high fat animal/oil foods. My new life mantra is follow the fiber! Fruits, veggies, beans, nuts, seeds. Just do it!

They are saying it is not good, although it appears a lot of the doctors (except Dr. Jason Fung) are vegans of some sort. Vegan is lining up to be the top-down 'morally driven' diet of correctness. LCHF and keto is a bottom up alignment in life. Not that there isnt room for vegan in keto: Dr. Dave Jockers:
      How to Follow a Vegan Ketogenic Diet.
      The best way is to witness for what you find true and helpful - and not to enforce upon others. There is no one size fits all diet and there is no way to FORCE health on people. But most of the processed 'foods' are often not - or contain toxic additives , and undergo denaturing processes or are grown in poor conditions with chemical biocides.
      Listening to the body is staying connected and present with - rather than being spun a mind-game. If you prove to yourself what works for you, you don't just think something, you are something!
      Vested interests may seek to undermine, introduce fears and doubts and set divisions in you/us. Be wise to it.

    The diabetes issue being separate, If this way of eating cuts hunger and thus a person eats less, then isn't the weight loss really about the calories after all?

    • @ellenorbjornsdottir1166
      @ellenorbjornsdottir1166 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no, because the cutting the hunger comes from the reduction in occult diabetes (hyperinsulinism) so you are suddenly flooded with energy from your fat stores. you don't eat less. you just don't put as much in your mouth. hope that made it easier

    hi Dr.! this is Shromona from India. I'm 23 years old, 5'2.5 and 45 KGS. I've been on keto for ten months now and have lost fifty pounds. however, I have had serious digestive issues lately with an unnatural craving for sugar. the moment I had sugar, I started experiencing diarrhoea. it's been three days since I've been prescribed medication for amoebiasis and have been given a lot of antibiotics. I'm extremely uncomfortable with the diet that has been suggested by my doctor, which is mostly rice, bananas and other sorts of non keto food. including Greek yogurt. I'm either left constipated or with diarrhoea and am very very bloated. is there an alternative to this diet? is it possible to stick to keto even while recovering from diarrhoea and amoebiasis? I feel as if I've gained all the weight back- of course it's not true, but eating carbs also has its psychological affect. what kind of keto food can one eat while having a viral stomach irritation? thanks.

      Been on keto/low carb for over 2 years so it IS sustainable. Heck you can even eat fast food if you want (just not the bread parts, sugary drinks or fries - but you can eat burger w/cheese and bacon, no bun). Cured my horrendous acid reflux and lowered blood sugar. I wasn't large but was beginning to have issues with blood sugars (probably thin outside fat inside as they say). Now all blood tests very good, and no more reflux (the best part for me if I'm honest - reflux kept me awake at nights, now I sleep well).

      Dr. Stephen Phinney, a medical doctor and nutrition researcher for 35 years, has been on a ketogenic diet for over 13 years. Jeff Volek, PhD, nutrition researcher, has been 'keto' for 8+ years. Dr. Tim Nokes, physician and nutrition researcher, has been on a ketogenic diet with extremely low carbs for around 7 years. He ran most every day of his life, and ran a bunch of marathons, and still got Type 2 diabetes on a high carb diet.
      Dr. Jason Fung appreciates the benefits of a Very Low Carb or ketogenic diet, but for his patients that cannot do that or find it too complicated (what is hard about no sugar, no starch, and only eating real, unprocessed food?) - he has them fast.
      See the TH-cam videos by these people for more details. Or have the mother contact Dr. Westman (I think he is at Duke University in N.C.) After all, 'doctors know best'.

This site is run by a physician, or doctor, who found that he was able to really help his pre-diabetic, metabolic syndrome, and diabetic patients with these diets - instead of just having to put them on more and more drugs over time as they got worse and worse.

    Got any by Dr Steven Baker please? I started with IFasting, then went to keto, now am doing mostly zero carb. We have no nutritional need for fruits or veggies, just if you want a treat I guess. In on of the first charts Westman shows no need but then has CAPITAL LETTERS statement saying We need vegetables. No we dont. Why are the keto docs afraid to state what we have learned?? Heck I have only been doing this since Sept 1st (now down almost 30lbs and I wasnt sick or obese, just looking at gaining 10lbs a decade w/SAD) and I learned it, why dont they say it & sell it and use the money they make for better animal husbandry & better slaughter houses? • @rhiannonchaffer2588
      @rhiannonchaffer2588 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      psychicoutlaw they won't say it because it's not true... we need the complex vitamins, minerals and fibre found in plant foods. Where would you get these instead (apart from supplements obviously)? As it's only been a couple of months, could it be that symptoms of the lack of these nutrients just haven't shown for you yet?

    • @psychicoutlaw
      @psychicoutlaw 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yes & no. If we eat only meat & animal products we will get all the micronutrients we need bc the animals have eaten & processed them for us. Have to get grass fed when possible and learn to sometimes eat organ meats, but what you are speaking of is the SAD we have been sold. That food pyramid is made up. Looking at the carnivore or zero carb people on here & even raw meat eaters, the 'science' of needing carbs as a macro just isnt there. Other than electrolytes at the beginning, we arent going to need supplements from eating meat.

      The yogurt needs to be homemade and cultured 24hrs. Then the lactose is eaten up by the cultures so it very very little lactose left so it’s very lowcarb. The berries are ok on occasion. You would still need to have some eggs too to equal the protein in bacon and eggs. Which you should have that much protein each meal. I would add cooked greens too.

      Right about 18:36 "...and fat has no glycemic effect. If you look at the list of glycemic foods, fat isn't on the list, because fat doesn't raise your blood sugar." If your blood sugar doesn't go up, your body will not produce insulin.

    • @LadyPashta

      NO. Fat barely raises insulin at all, so little as to be effectively none.

    • @suedouglas5455
      @suedouglas5455 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, fat doesn’t raise insulin at all, but use butter, lard, extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil NOT vegetable/corn/rape seed oils which are bad for you....

    • @ellenorbjornsdottir1166
      @ellenorbjornsdottir1166 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does. All ingested nutrients raise insulin. Fat does it the least however. And this is why fat does not lock you into a cycle of overeating.

    What about Saturated Fat and safety on plaque build up in the arteries, which then harden, and ultimately leads to coronary heart disease?

    • @Benjamin-to2zq
      @Benjamin-to2zq 6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      andy hurdman nutritional fat is not the problem. Body fat is. Insulin happens to be a fat storage hormone. Nutritional fat has little impact on insulin.. Whereas carbs and sugar do effect insulin. So sugar and carbs are the real culprit. Not saturated fat.

      You actually have a real choice now... to follow the corporately-captured medical model, or to open an education in science and common sense. Note that the transfats (marge) and easily oxidized seed oils are NOT health supporting at a cellular level, and that the support for the theory that Ancel Keys *and industry sponsors* put out that fat or cholesterol cause heart disease has found no evidence to support it in over 60 years! But make a big lie and make it pervasive and it becomes installed at the cost of true - and much misery. If you feel safer in not opening to the movement that is rising after decades of suppression, along with the health benefits of a correct understanding of the harms that overeating sugars and carbs have on health, then that is a choice you are making. Not anyone else.

    Most of people do keto to lose weight and yes it really works thats why everyone loves it but think about it i mean what are fruits made for if no one eats it anymore? Not being able to eat fruits on keto is really nonsense to me i mean its a plant based carb why would that be harmful? I went on keto for like 3 weeks or so i couldn’t lift the way i used to do i became really weak at the gym i do believe everyone needs carbs in their lives but not all carbs are good for sure i wouldn’t make keto a lifestyle but I quit processed carbs i only eat whole wheat and oats through keto , I recommend keto for people who wants to lose fat in a fast way then go back to ur normal life

    • @TH-tl6sy

      Shady Shadpus we are omnivores however, our digestive system and metabolism is closer to that of canines and cats than herbivores.
      Unlike herbivores humans cannot digest cellulose. We lack the digestive enhancements of herbivores like enzymes, multiple stomachs, gullets, 20x the body length intestines.
      Wolves and Lions have 2.5x their body length in intestines, where as humans are about 4x their body length. Also the metabolic need for protein is similar.
      We're closer to carnivores than herbivores naturally.
