Dr. Lustig doesn't know everything. What he doesn't know is 3 years ago after a not so good doctors appointment about my high blood pressure, overweight, fatty liver and sky high triglycerides I turned to TH-cam for information and ran across his first video on sugar. It was so mind boggling I kept going to other videos he spoke on and made all of the changes he recommended. Before 12 months past I dropped 52 pounds, stopped taking 7 medications, 4 which were prescription and had that 20 year old feeling again at the age of 61. I would love to tell him thank you and hope he reads this post. I consider myself an educated person but I was so dumb in all this health and nutrition stuff. I am also a little upset I had to go to TH-cam to learn this while going for physicals every 6 months with my PCP that only threw a pill at a symptom instead of how to totally avoid that symptom through diet. BP averages 125/65, triglycerides went from 388 to 44, triglyceride divide by HDL= 0.38 and I take nothing now.
Good job. It's sad that most people are not educated on health and nutrition stuff and most physicians have no clue as to how to properly treat metabolic syndromes. Millions of people are still suffering from metabolic syndromes with poor diets. Physicians would make a lot less money if 80% of the population quits standard American diet.
When I discovered 75% of all healthcare expenses go to treat metabolic disease that is preventable with proper education it really hit me because I'm paying around $1,000 per month for healthcare insurance for me and my wife only. I’m a 3 tour Vietnam combat veteran. In 2020 I was in VA counseling for chronic PTSD when I discovered via Dr. Lustig that my diet was driving my inability to solve my depression. I became a student of the effects of in appropriate consumption and changed my life completely. I’m now 76 and ride my bike 45 minutes at 4AM every day. My base line BP is 108/72 my glucose base line is 96. I eat zero sugar in any form. If it comes with a label, bar code, or in a package I don’t eat it. I only eat real food that I prepare. I take zero meds, have zero arthritis and zero brain fog.

Finally someone telling the truth! This is not new for me! My mother is 85 years old and she doesn’t suffer with any kind of health issue. She is a very active woman working in her garden every day and eating from it. Everything she consumes is 100% natural, she doesn’t eats a lot of sugar but she eats a lot of veggies and fruits from her orchard and she is even healthier than her children living in cities! That’s a fact! She always say exactly all these principles to us!

I now have not bought any processed boxed, canned or bagged food in 489 days. My health has improved exponentially and eating only meat has saved me tons of money and I NEVER have things molding or rotting in my refrigerator. NO more waste. Sugar withdrawal was not fun but after 2 weeks, I felt so much better. I will now have a much greater chance to live to my goal of the Normal healthy human lifespan of 120 plus years. ❤
There are pescatarian, ovo lacto vegetarian, vegan and omnivore centenarians but to this day not a single carnivore human on this planet has reached 100. You might want to consider this as you wish to be a guinea pig. Lustig has never recommended your diet.

I have an annual physical next month and I specifically asked the doctor's office to run a fasting insulin and uric acid test and I was basically told NO! They said, "We wait until you have a diagnosis and then we refer you to a specialist and then they will run those tests." Wow, just wow! That's a quick look into what's wrong with the healthcare system. Fortunately, I have secured another avenue to get the testing I need.
I recently asked my doc for the Fasting Insulin and she said it wasn't necessary. And now my blood work came back and she wants me to see a dietitian and go on nonfat/ low fat diet b/c my Cholesterol was "high"....Ugh!
I had stage 4 colon cancer that metastasized to my liver in 2005, leading to colon and liver resections. Fiber causes obstructions that require hospitalization, I'm lactose intolerant, Pork and red meat make my fingers swell, so I mostly eat fish, chicken, and turkey. I'm diabetic and manage it with an extremely low-carb diet, without medication. I have high blood pressure (Amlodipine 5mg) and high cholesterol, but I control everything except blood pressure through diet. I've stayed out of the hospital for the past three years, but at 75, it's getting harder to maintain a healthy diet. My vitals fluctuate, requiring constant dietary adjustments. My challenge is finding unprocessed foods that I can digest without worsening my conditions. Following Dr. Lustig, I try to learn something new every day and I have his book. I don't want to lose motivation, but sometimes I feel lost because my diets clash due to my inability to digest fiber. I know that if I can't manage my diet and have to rely on others, it could be the end for me, as it was when I was hospitalized and given the wrong food. I also had a serious episode when a friend cooked for me. Staying healthy is a full-time job.
Indeed. I first listened to it and had to get the text for referening the deeper material in a couple of chapters. I've also been buying copies for friends who will benefit.
Lustig is great. He really knows his stuff. Someone has to get out there in front. You can see how this frustrates him (the organizations that keep doing things the current way).
Lustig mentions that ALT (fatty liver) normal range has been adjusted upward (normal range is set way too high). So I checked my records. Labs "normal range" will vary. The lab my Dr. uses is Quest; and they still use the traditional 6 to 29 range. Really appreciate when hosts/guests in these videos help us decipher lab results. Thank you.
I certainly agree with his approach - it has worked for me. Question for anyone: Why do organisations like Diabetes Australia continue with the food guidelines that ptomote a high level of carbs? There is ample evidence that it has not worked given the high levels of chronic diseases like fatty liver, diabetes, heart disease.... Many institutions still recommend reducing saturated fats yet encourage eating fruit, which for diabetics is crazy.😮
Just listened to this talk a second time….. it’s amazing! I’m now chasing TH-cam for every utterance of Dr Robert Lustig because this is life changing stuff! I’ve also just got the book….. I only discovered this Dr a few weeks ago but fast forward with life changes. Brilliant!!!!!!!
If you have metabolic syndrome the book metaboplical is a life changer. Thankfully after being diagnosed with heat issues three years ago aged 62 at the time I started on an journey to fitness and wellness. Keto diet was instrumental in getting me there (lost 85Lbs) along with intermittent fasting, resistant training and good cardio work outs. It comes down to two basic things. Eat real good quality whole foods and move more (ideally with resistance involved). Cut down on alcohol and all sugars refined or not. Get blood tests at least twice a year and look at the numbers yourself. Do your own research. Drink at least 1/2 gallon water per day more if you can take it. But never forget to live life to the full. My ambition, is to die as healthfully as possible.
His book was a game changer in the way that I now eat and think about food. Bought the book for my family. Thank you ❤ for your dedication in helping people live longer without disease. Like me 😅
I particularly likee Dr Lustig. Have spent 4 months eating no added sugar and mostly real food. Every once in a while I will eat a pizza or maybe a cheeseburger. I feel so much better with the change in diet.

I owe to Dr. Lustig the knowledge that sugar drives up cholesterol and triglycerides. Incredibly, I have been taking Annual Physical exams at one of the most reputable clinics in a major city, and no one dared to explain to me correctly how to reduce cholesterol other than "reduce red meat consumption and exercise". His videos inspired me to do research, and I decided to cut all processed foods and all added sugar. I also went further and moved to a whole-foods, plant-dominant diet. Per his recommendation, I avoid fructose like the plague, except in natural fruit form. I took LDL down from 160 to 90 with diet alone, then added a low-dose statin and I am now at 62. Blood pressure came down from 135/85 to 118/73. My ability/energy to exercise came back at age 51. I now exercise 5 times per week, instead of 1.
You should know that he does NOT recommend statins for primary prevention, and, frankly, 62 is extremely low. They have only recently lowered the arbitrary number so they can get more people taking this dangerous drug for life, and now they can justify putting children on it for life, too. LDL is not the problem, they have only glommed onto saying that it is because they came up with a pill for it. It is not a MAKER of disease and is a very poor MARKER of disease. It has a very necessary function in the body. And lipoproteins are not cholesterol. They are like taxis for cholesterol and fatty acids that get them into the cells so they can do their work. There is only one cholesterol molecule, it's in every cell wall and is a large percentage of our brains. This is why a side effect of statins is muscle pain and memory issues. In order to reduce the number you're killing cells. If you could snap your fingers and have all the cholesterol leave your body you would immediately drop dead. It's critical to many other pathways as well, like making hormones. Kinda sounds important, right? I recommend looking into Ancel Keys to learn how we got to demonizing a life critical molecule, especially when there was a competing theory at the time that said sugar was the problem. Hm, how has that worked out for us?
Thank you Dr. Lustig! Our youngest is type one diabetic for the past twenty years. I hoping to put into practice these actionable suggestions in our diet. I am the main household cook, so I’m buying your book. We are a very sugar addicted family, however I am comforted by the fact that I now know that processed food is designed to addict us.

Just please don't forget that Type 1 diabetes is fundamentally different from Type 2 diabetes because it's not caused by a crappy diet/ insulin resistance from too much sugar, it's caused by a damage to the pancreas itself, in many cases caused by certain viruses. That means you can't cure type2 by a change in diet, you will always have to supplement Insulin. Again, wishing you all the best and a long and healthy life!
good luck with your challenge ..im sugar addicted too, pre diabetic , fatty liver.....try this 1) about forty five minutes before you are going to eat.... drink a large glass of water ...2) only go to the grocery store directly after a large meal....3) experiment with "mindful eating" google it ...maybe this can help you a bit :)
Jicama spiked my glucose more than anything. Without the cgm I would have blithely continued to consume it daily because it is very high in fibre and it has no label it’s not that cut and dried unfortunately 🤷🏻♂️
The cgm is an important tool. My cgm just showed me that one of my favorite food causes high spikes for 10 hours after eating the food. I'm so grateful to know what I'm learning. It's very personal these things .
My family members that eat fast food, grocery store junk food, alcohol, cigarettes, prescription drugs, lie and steal all believe that there is something wrong with me because I don't do any of those things. I have a family member that have taken so many prescription drugs for so long that I have come to believe that they have been turned into a completely different person.

I'm 54, 5'10" and 260 lbs. I've been this size since I was 15. Last year at my physical I had blood work done. My Triglycerides are 58 and HDL is 63. My ratio is .92. This makes me FOTI, Fat on the outside, Thin on the inside.

Concerning flour replacement, I found an amazing flour (I live in Montreal, Canada) that is high in fibers: lupin flour. I use it for baking. The problem is that it is more expensive 😢. Thank you Dr. Lustig for educating us and helping us in our food choices. We love you ❤❤❤
There are interesting recipes on the Internet if you search Lupin Flour. I used it when I was on the keto diet to make cookies and bread (Diedre's low carb bread), but now that we can't use erythritol or other similar sugars anymore ( because it can lead to blot clots and it raises insulin the same as sugar), I didn't search for more sweet recipes, just for the bread which you mix it with oat fiber and vital wheat gluten. I'm trying to ban sugar completely, but it is hard...@@mayiakashmurr3000
Rob's last point is that Fructose decreases Mitachondrial beta-oxidation as a pre-cursor to Parkinsons disease .My Father died from Parkinsons ,so he must have had damaged mitachondria ( at least partly, caused by Fructose in our Processed Food ). Soft drinks ,especially , are full of Fructose that damages our mitachondria .
Back when I was a teen (early 70’s) I thought I had an eating disorder because I would eat a meal and didn’t seem to ever feel full or satisfied. I have portioned my meals my whole life and still struggled with weight and always felt hungry. Went keto and everything changed. When I eat I feel satisfied. Feel full for hours. I’ve lost weight. My blood work is all in middle of healthy range. AND I’m sleeping better.
Dear robert, i love you to bits and have great respect. I started my health regime after having a kidney removed almost 50 years ago.since then i changed my diet and for about 48years ago i have not eaten meat, fish, chicken or eggs. I havd been a whole food plant diet vegan for over 20 years. I came across natural hygiene 40 years ago and they include eating between 12 noon and 8pm, in fact intermitent fasting. It seems to be thought of as a new concept!! But it is not!! Also no one speaks about how meat manages the very long human digestive tract. In fact it putrifies and causes bowel diseases? We are primates and our food is fruit, greens and other veg. I wish you could research these last 2 points if you have not already done so. I am still stuck on adding fiber. I disagree with Dr. Lustig only because of the many Dr. Interviews I heard from Dr. Ken Berry, Dr. Anthony Chaffee. Other Drs as well. Not sure if the math of eating fiber reduces carbs. This does not make sense. It seems to easy to figure and I think the body is more complex than just adding the fiber figure and subtracting it from the carb count. Dr Lustig is great!
It's my understanding fiber slows absorbing carbs, doesn't do anything to them otherwise. It will raise glucose, just more slowly and less radically. Same with protein and fat, it slows obsorbtion.
He is correct. The fibre allows the food to break down at the rate it's meant to and as a result does not cause dysfunction. That's how we were designed to eat.

@toriwolf1014 I'm in the same boat, but the way I see it is I either pay for it now or I'll pay for it later in increased health costs and a potentially life-threatening disease. By then, I'd probably be willing to buy as much grass-fed beef as I can get my hands on, and it would most likely be too late. Besides, when you eat healthy vegetables and fruits alongside the grass-fed beef, they are far less expensive than the processed crap in boxes. How much would you be willing to pay to save your life if you had to? Be sure to compare prices. I've actually found some grass-fed beef that was less expensive than the other stuff, surprisingly.
Grass fed beef is one thing..but how is it FINISHED? Be careful with assumptions. Grass fed for the first part of the steer’s life is lovely; but very often untold, is how the last month or so of the animal spends its time? In a feed lot to fatten up a bit? All over the place you may find declarations that the beef is “grass fed” but hardly ever (except perhaps at a farmer’s market) will you hear “grass fed and grass finished “. How much of a difference does it really make? I don’t know…but it would be interesting to find out.

If what Lustig says about the need for fiber is true then why is it that zero carb diets are very successful. The Inuit above the Arctic circle survived and thrived for thousands of years with zero carbs which would also include fiber. The first white explorers reported that these natives had no metabolic disease and were uniformly lean and healthy by just eating saturated fat and animal protein.
Someone explained it somewhere that , even if a ground of people eat high carb food but they're whole foods, not processed, high fat and not processed they will still be healthy. It has a lot to do with the quality of carbs or fats that you are consuming.
I think he’s talking about the average person who consumes carbs and has gut bacteria that reflects that. Those bacteria need fiber. Anyone who goes on the carnivore diet will tell you about their massive gut reset, and accompanying gastric distress, which they go through after a couple weeks. That’s the result of their gut bacteria dying off. What takes its place, I don’t know, but seems like totally different gut microbes would be present in someone eating only meat than someone eating a macro balanced diet.

@joanneclark8256 I didn't. But I definitely prevented it from going up by lowering carbs, exercising, intermittent fasting etc. I also take milk thistle ( 100% effective in my opi) and vitamins B. Also, cruciferous veggies detox liver, and I was taking TUDCA supplement for bile flow. I hope, it helps. But nutrition is the most important thing. My ALT is 20, I want to lower it to 15, but for that I need to stop drinking, I'm reducing alcohol.
Read your great book Metabolical and love it. Being a stickler for detail I was surprise to not see a single footnote. In my opinion it is so important in terms of credibility. As all of my favourite researchers love to say, Here are my sources, check it out yourself.

Trick questions: 1) Healthiness of Medjool dates, which often come in a package with a label. 2) Healthiness of steel-cut oat with flaxseed 3) Does eating foods in a meal in a certain order prevent or reduce blood sugar spikes? If so what order? If so, and if you aren't eating fruit or starches or sugars in a meal, does the sequence matter? Example of consumption sequence: . High fiber low calorie density vegetables . Protein . Fat . All other carbs. Where does steel-cut oats fit in this sequence? Where does whole fresh fruit fit in such as fresh red grapes or pomegranate or pineapple?
The dates sold have been steamed( processed). Humans probably did not eat raw oats so not real food. Study how many fruits and veggies (and grains) have been engineered to be sweeter ( more sugar) More gluten, etc. Not as healthy!😢
@@freedomskier2343 each individual is unique. I have one or two dates in a day if at all. I eat steel-cut oats a few times a week after a hard boiled egg after i have black coffee, do 30 minutes of core and glute exercises and walk 20 minutes outside at dawn. I believe the protein and exercise mediate blood glucose spikes and inflammation. Could be wrong though!
Also, i couldn't find anything on the internet indicating that medjool dates are steamed but found a few who indicated they are naturally moister than other dates. So maybe they are steamed, maybe not.
I wear a size 40 I have no underlying condition, 0 on the calcium scan test, 5.0 A1C, 84 on triglycerides, and fasting triglycerides are the same. I am in the process of trying to bring up my HDL so I can be in the 1.8% tile of the metabolic panel
How come 100% whole wheat food that has more fiber than white bread with pretty much hardly any fiber have the same glycemic index IF fiber is helping so much with sugar spikes; that has never made sense to me. Could someone please explain this.
Lustig says check the ratio of fiber grams to carbs in whole grain breads. It shouldn't be higher than 1: 10. So a slice with 3 g fiber and 30 grams total carbs is better than 5 grams carbs and 80 g carbs. If this helps. Helps me decide on items with flour in them. (And of course no added sugar)
He said salt is added to chicken breast so it can swell with water and cost more per weight. Is this true? It should be illegal. Is this why I get so much liquid when I cook cut up chicken breast (the cheap type which has nearly doubled in price due to inflation past few years)? I mean they really shrink.

Dr Thomas Lodi has cured way too many to count with good whole foods, juice cleans etc. Dr Lodi is very well known and respected oncologist. Dr Berry had a chance to challenge a metabolic expert in Dr Lustig but didn’t in-fact He agreed with the good doctor. You can see the interview. So is Dr Berry sending mix messages too ?

@@engc4953The Sonnenbergs study found that fermented foods were more effective for the gut than fiber, but that fiber was also important. Search them online. They are spent on this topic.

He addresses the mercury issue in other videos. Go check into the history of the mercury thing. It may change the hesitation to eat a lot of fish. It did for me.
Most fish do contain some mercury. However, some fish contain higher levels of mercury and other varieties much lower levels of mercury. Fortunately, many of the most nutritious varieties of fish with the highest Omega -3 fats contain much lower levels of mercury. These high Omega -3 fish with lower mercury levels are Salmon, sardines, mackerel, and herring. The two varieties of fish with the highest levels of mercury and to be avoided are swordfish and tuna. Also, the mineral selenium helps block the absorbtion of mercury. I , as insurance, take 200 micrograms of selenium per day in supplemental form (either selenomethionine or selenocyteine). This supplement is moderately priced. Beware : although selenium is an important mineral it can be toxic in high doses. For adults, 200 mcgs. per day is generally considered probably safe for adults, higher doses are best to be avoided. Also, many fish have some selenium as does Brazil nuts. Look up selenium content of food and safe doses to consume. Do the research, as I have done. Good luck.
Mercury is one thing that can be avoided, but the ‘other crap’ like micro plastics and other toxins, it seems there’s no way to know how much of that is in the fish we buy.

What if I'm eating only meat? The nutrition and meat is 100% bioavailable. Does it require fiber to be digested? I'm thinking that the only reason we need fiber is in order to digest all the nearly impossible to digest nutrients in plants and grains.

Good job. It's sad that most people are not educated on health and nutrition stuff and most physicians have no clue as to how to properly treat metabolic syndromes. Millions of people are still suffering from metabolic syndromes with poor diets. Physicians would make a lot less money if 80% of the population quits standard American diet.
When I discovered 75% of all healthcare expenses go to treat metabolic disease that is preventable with proper education it really hit me because I'm paying around $1,000 per month for healthcare insurance for me and my wife only. I’m a 3 tour Vietnam combat veteran. In 2020 I was in VA counseling for chronic PTSD when I discovered via Dr. Lustig that my diet was driving my inability to solve my depression. I became a student of the effects of in appropriate consumption and changed my life completely. I’m now 76 and ride my bike 45 minutes at 4AM every day. My base line BP is 108/72 my glucose base line is 96. I eat zero sugar in any form. If it comes with a label, bar code, or in a package I don’t eat it. I only eat real food that I prepare. I take zero meds, have zero arthritis and zero brain fog.

Finally someone telling the truth! This is not new for me! My mother is 85 years old and she doesn’t suffer with any kind of health issue. She is a very active woman working in her garden every day and eating from it. Everything she consumes is 100% natural, she doesn’t eats a lot of sugar but she eats a lot of veggies and fruits from her orchard and she is even healthier than her children living in cities! That’s a fact! She always say exactly all these principles to us!

I now have not bought any processed boxed, canned or bagged food in 489 days. My health has improved exponentially and eating only meat has saved me tons of money and I NEVER have things molding or rotting in my refrigerator. NO more waste. Sugar withdrawal was not fun but after 2 weeks, I felt so much better. I will now have a much greater chance to live to my goal of the Normal healthy human lifespan of 120 plus years. ❤

I have an annual physical next month and I specifically asked the doctor's office to run a fasting insulin and uric acid test and I was basically told NO! They said, "We wait until you have a diagnosis and then we refer you to a specialist and then they will run those tests." Wow, just wow! That's a quick look into what's wrong with the healthcare system. Fortunately, I have secured another avenue to get the testing I need.
Insurance wont pay for tests out of sequence. Medicare doesn’t pay for diagnostic tests!!!!

I had stage 4 colon cancer that metastasized to my liver in 2005, leading to colon and liver resections. Fiber causes obstructions that require
hospitalization, I'm lactose intolerant, Pork and red meat make my fingers swell, so I mostly eat fish, chicken, and turkey. I'm diabetic and manage it with an extremely low-carb diet, without medication. I have high blood pressure (Amlodipine 5mg) and high cholesterol, but I control everything except blood pressure through diet.
I've stayed out of the hospital for the past three years, but at 75, it's getting harder to maintain a healthy diet. My vitals fluctuate, requiring constant dietary adjustments. My challenge is finding unprocessed foods that I can digest without worsening my conditions. Following Dr. Lustig, I try to learn something new every day and I have his book.
I don't want to lose motivation, but sometimes I feel lost because my diets clash due to my inability to digest fiber. I know that if I can't manage my diet and have to rely on others, it could be the end for me, as it was when I was hospitalized and given the wrong food. I also had a serious episode when a friend cooked for me. Staying healthy is a full-time job.

Lustig mentions that ALT (fatty liver) normal range has been adjusted upward (normal range is set way too high). So I checked my records. Labs "normal range" will vary. The lab my Dr. uses is Quest; and they still use the traditional 6 to 29 range. Really appreciate when hosts/guests in these videos help us decipher lab results. Thank you.

If you have metabolic syndrome the book metaboplical is a life changer. Thankfully after being diagnosed with heat issues three years ago aged 62 at the time I started on an journey to fitness and wellness. Keto diet was instrumental in getting me there (lost 85Lbs) along with intermittent fasting, resistant training and good cardio work outs. It comes down to two basic things. Eat real good quality whole foods and move more (ideally with resistance involved). Cut down on alcohol and all sugars refined or not. Get blood tests at least twice a year and look at the numbers yourself. Do your own research. Drink at least 1/2 gallon water per day more if you can take it. But never forget to live life to the full. My ambition, is to die as healthfully as possible.

I owe to Dr. Lustig the knowledge that sugar drives up cholesterol and triglycerides. Incredibly, I have been taking Annual Physical exams at one of the most reputable clinics in a major city, and no one dared to explain to me correctly how to reduce cholesterol other than "reduce red meat consumption and exercise". His videos inspired me to do research, and I decided to cut all processed foods and all added sugar. I also went further and moved to a whole-foods, plant-dominant diet. Per his recommendation, I avoid fructose like the plague, except in natural fruit form. I took LDL down from 160 to 90 with diet alone, then added a low-dose statin and I am now at 62. Blood pressure came down from 135/85 to 118/73. My ability/energy to exercise came back at age 51. I now exercise 5 times per week, instead of 1.
You should know that he does NOT recommend statins for primary prevention, and, frankly, 62 is extremely low. They have only recently lowered the arbitrary number so they can get more people taking this dangerous drug for life, and now they can justify putting children on it for life, too. LDL is not the problem, they have only glommed onto saying that it is because they came up with a pill for it. It is not a MAKER of disease and is a very poor MARKER of disease. It has a very necessary function in the body. And lipoproteins are not cholesterol. They are like taxis for cholesterol and fatty acids that get them into the cells so they can do their work. There is only one cholesterol molecule, it's in every cell wall and is a large percentage of our brains. This is why a side effect of statins is muscle pain and memory issues. In order to reduce the number you're killing cells. If you could snap your fingers and have all the cholesterol leave your body you would immediately drop dead. It's critical to many other pathways as well, like making hormones. Kinda sounds important, right? I recommend looking into Ancel Keys to learn how we got to demonizing a life critical molecule, especially when there was a competing theory at the time that said sugar was the problem. Hm, how has that worked out for us?

Just please don't forget that Type 1 diabetes is fundamentally different from Type 2 diabetes because it's not caused by a crappy diet/ insulin resistance from too much sugar, it's caused by a damage to the pancreas itself, in many cases caused by certain viruses. That means you can't cure type2 by a change in diet, you will always have to supplement Insulin. Again, wishing you all the best and a long and healthy life!

Jicama spiked my glucose more than anything. Without the cgm I would have blithely continued to consume it daily because it is very high in fibre and it has no label it’s not that cut and dried unfortunately 🤷🏻♂️
The cgm is an important tool. My cgm just showed me that one of my favorite food causes high spikes for 10 hours after eating the food. I'm so grateful to know what I'm learning. It's very personal these things .
My family members that eat fast food, grocery store junk food, alcohol, cigarettes, prescription drugs, lie and steal all believe that there is something wrong with me because I don't do any of those things. I have a family member that have taken so many prescription drugs for so long that I have come to believe that they have been turned into a completely different person.

Concerning flour replacement, I found an amazing flour (I live in Montreal, Canada) that is high in fibers: lupin flour. I use it for baking. The problem is that it is more expensive 😢. Thank you Dr. Lustig for educating us and helping us in our food choices. We love you ❤❤❤

There are interesting recipes on the Internet if you search Lupin Flour. I used it when I was on the keto diet to make cookies and bread (Diedre's low carb bread), but now that we can't use erythritol or other similar sugars anymore ( because it can lead to blot clots and it raises insulin the same as sugar), I didn't search for more sweet recipes, just for the bread which you mix it with oat fiber and vital wheat gluten. Rob's last point is that Fructose decreases Mitachondrial beta-oxidation as a pre-cursor to Parkinsons disease .My Father died from Parkinsons ,so he must have had damaged mitachondria ( at least partly, caused by Fructose in our Processed Food ). Back when I was a teen (early 70’s) I thought I had an eating disorder because I would eat a meal and didn’t seem to ever feel full or satisfied. I have portioned my meals my whole life and still struggled with weight and always felt hungry. Went keto and everything changed. When I eat I feel satisfied. Feel full for hours. I’ve lost weight. My blood work is all in middle of healthy range. AND I’m sleeping better.

Dear robert, i love you to bits and have great respect. I started my health regime after having a kidney removed almost 50 years ago.since then i changed my diet and for about 48years ago i have not eaten meat, fish, chicken or eggs. I havd been a whole food plant diet vegan for over 20 years. I came across natural hygiene 40 years ago and they include eating between 12 noon and 8pm, in fact intermitent fasting. It seems to be thought of as a new concept!! But it is not!! Also no one speaks about how meat manages the very long human digestive tract. In fact it putrifies and causes bowel diseases? We are primates and our food is fruit, greens and other veg. I wish you could research these last 2 points if you have not already done so. I am an 80years old female, healthy (i think), still teaching yoga and no medications.

I am still stuck on adding fiber. I disagree with Dr. Lustig only because of the many Dr. Interviews I heard from Dr. Ken Berry, Dr. Anthony Chaffee. Other Drs as well. Not sure if the math of eating fiber reduces carbs. This does not make sense. It seems to easy to figure and I think the body is more complex than just adding the fiber figure and subtracting it from the carb count. Dr Lustig is great!

It's my understanding fiber slows absorbing carbs, doesn't do anything to them otherwise. It will raise glucose, just more slowly and less radically. Same with protein and fat, it slows obsorbtion.
He is correct. The fibre allows the food to break down at the rate it's meant to and as a result does not cause dysfunction. That's how we were designed to eat.

By then, I'd probably be willing to buy as much grass-fed beef as I can get my hands on, and it would most likely be too late. Besides, when you eat healthy vegetables and fruits alongside the grass-fed beef, they are far less expensive than the processed crap in boxes. How much would you be willing to pay to save your life if you had to? Be sure to compare prices. I've actually found some grass-fed beef that was less expensive than the other stuff, surprisingly.

Grass fed beef is one thing..but how is it FINISHED? Be careful with assumptions. Grass fed for the first part of the steer’s life is lovely; but very often untold, is how the last month or so of the animal spends its time? In a feed lot to fatten up a bit? All over the place you may find declarations that the beef is “grass fed” but hardly ever (except perhaps at a farmer’s market) will you hear “grass fed and grass finished “. How much of a difference does it really make? I don’t know…but it would be interesting to find out.

If what Lustig says about the need for fiber is true then why is it that zero carb diets are very successful. The Inuit above the Arctic circle survived and thrived for thousands of years with zero carbs which would also include fiber. The first white explorers reported that these natives had no metabolic disease and were uniformly lean and healthy by just eating saturated fat and animal protein.
Someone explained it somewhere that , even if a ground of people eat high carb food but they're whole foods, not processed, high fat and not processed they will still be healthy. It has a lot to do with the quality of carbs or fats that you are consuming.

What he says about fiber is lunacy.
I think he’s talking about the average person who consumes carbs and has gut bacteria that reflects that. Those bacteria need fiber. Anyone who goes on the carnivore diet will tell you about their massive gut reset, and accompanying gastric distress, which they go through after a couple weeks. That’s the result of their gut bacteria dying off. What takes its place, I don’t know, but seems like totally different gut microbes would be present in someone eating only meat than someone eating a macro balanced diet.
He explained in another video that if you lack fiber as in carnivore diet the bacteria will begin to use amino acids for food.

@joanneclark8256 I didn't. But I definitely prevented it from going up by lowering carbs, exercising, intermittent fasting etc. I also take milk thistle ( 100% effective in my opi) and vitamins B. Also, cruciferous veggies detox liver, and I was taking TUDCA supplement for bile flow. I hope, it helps. But nutrition is the most important thing. My ALT is 20, I want to lower it to 15, but for that I need to stop drinking, I'm reducing alcohol.

All I want to know from a label is whether it has plant matter or seed oils. Otherwise, what kind of meat is it?
@RayBucks-yy4wi Why would I eat whole plant foods with nutrients that are only 14% bioavailable and have anti-nutrients such as fiber when every bit of fatty red meat is bioavailable and nutrient dense? I’m done eating plants.
Trick questions:
1) Healthiness of Medjool dates, which often come in a package with a label.
2) Healthiness of steel-cut oat with flaxseed
3) Does eating foods in a meal in a certain order prevent or reduce blood sugar spikes?
If so what order?
If so, and if you aren't eating fruit or starches or sugars in a meal, does the sequence matter?
Example of consumption sequence:
. High fiber low calorie density vegetables
. Protein
. Fat
. All other carbs.
Where does steel-cut oats fit in this sequence? Where does whole fresh fruit fit in such as fresh red grapes or pomegranate or pineapple?
Test your bloodsugar consuming the foods in different order? Learn about your body. It's whispering to you ❤
The dates sold have been steamed( processed). Humans probably did not eat raw oats so not real food. Study how many fruits and veggies (and grains) have been engineered to be sweeter ( more sugar) More gluten, etc. Not as healthy!😢

I have one or two dates in a day if at all.
I eat steel-cut oats a few times a week after a hard boiled egg after i have black coffee, do 30 minutes of core and glute exercises and walk 20 minutes outside at dawn.
I believe the protein and exercise mediate blood glucose spikes and inflammation.
Could be wrong though!
Also, i couldn't find anything on the internet indicating that medjool dates are steamed but found a few who indicated they are naturally moister than other dates.
So maybe they are steamed, maybe not.
I wear a size 40 I have no underlying condition, 0 on the calcium scan test, 5.0 A1C, 84 on triglycerides, and fasting triglycerides are the same. I am in the process of trying to bring up my HDL so I can be in the 1.8% tile of the metabolic panel
How come 100% whole wheat food that has more fiber than white bread with pretty much hardly any fiber have the same glycemic index IF fiber is helping so much with sugar spikes; that has never made sense to me. Could someone please explain this.
Lustig says check the ratio of fiber grams to carbs in whole grain breads. It shouldn't be higher than 1: 10. So a slice with 3 g fiber and 30 grams total carbs is better than 5 grams carbs and 80 g carbs. If this helps. Helps me decide on items with flour in them. (And of course no added sugar)

He said salt is added to chicken breast so it can swell with water and cost more per weight. Is this true? It should be illegal. Is this why I get so much liquid when I cook cut up chicken breast (the cheap type which has nearly doubled in price due to inflation past few years)? I mean they really shrink.

There is no supporting factual evidence that fibre is required. This is one point where the good doctor gets it wrong.
@@engc4953 ton of good doctors say fiber is needed for gut food. Dr Thomas Lodi has cured way too many to count with good whole foods, juice cleans etc. Dr Lodi is very well known and respected oncologist. Dr Berry had a chance to challenge a metabolic expert in Dr Lustig but didn’t in-fact He agreed with the good doctor. You can see the interview. So is Dr Berry sending mix messages too ?

@@engc4953The Sonnenbergs study found that fermented foods were more effective for the gut than fiber, but that fiber was also important. Search them online. They are spent on this topic.
He says he's a pescatarian obviously farm raised is bad but what wild fish can you eat regularly that's not full of mercury and other crap? I wish he would address this in a video.
He addresses the mercury issue in other videos. Go check into the history of the mercury thing. It may change the hesitation to eat a lot of fish. It did for me.

eat fish lower on the food chain to avoid mercury. Limit swordfish, tuna - the big fish in the ocean.
Most fish do contain some mercury. However, some fish contain higher levels of mercury and other varieties much lower levels of mercury. Fortunately, many of the most nutritious varieties of fish with the highest Omega -3 fats contain much lower levels of mercury. These high Omega -3 fish with lower mercury levels are Salmon, sardines, mackerel, and herring. The two varieties of fish with the highest levels of mercury and to be avoided are swordfish and tuna. Also, the mineral selenium helps block the absorbtion of mercury. I , as insurance, take 200 micrograms of selenium per day in supplemental form (either selenomethionine or selenocyteine). This supplement is moderately priced. Beware : although selenium is an important mineral it can be toxic in high doses. For adults, 200 mcgs. per day is generally considered probably safe for adults, higher doses are best to be avoided. Also, many fish have some selenium as does Brazil nuts. Look up selenium content of food and safe doses to consume. Do the research, as I have done. Good luck.
Mercury is one thing that can be avoided, but the ‘other crap’ like micro plastics and other toxins, it seems there’s no way to know how much of that is in the fish we buy.

I don't get all the metabolic process details, but I'm slowly familiarizing myself with the vocabulary. he's such a help and such a comedian, makes me laugh, cheers me on. it's heartwarming to read the testimonials in the comments.

Japanese soba (buckwheat noodles) is a high-fiber food. Buy at Japanese and Korean grocery stores. Eat cold after cooking, straining and chilling.
What if I'm eating only meat? The nutrition and meat is 100% bioavailable. Does it require fiber to be digested?
I'm thinking that the only reason we need fiber is in order to digest all the nearly impossible to digest nutrients in plants and grains.
