A tip for if you're going to do much Peak District camping is to keep your inner tent in a dry bag and just pitch an outer and a ground sheet first. It gives you more room to operate, you can dry out an not worry about getting everything wet. I like to keep my inner as bone dry as possible.
Great Video! A shame the weather was typical for Kinder on your 1st camp here. 😂 Hope to see you on another video here soon 😊The Hayfield side of Kinder is also worth a visit!
@@simonablokeinthewoods Hi Simon, do a series on cheap equipment, that would be interesting. Have a budget, set a maximum amount, and do a trip. This fancy new equipment is way over priced.
Yay Simon is back thank you Simon for an awesome video. We love you here in northern California. You’re an awesome bloke. Thank you for your hard work.
I honestly would love to be able to do what you do just as a hobby, to enjoy the outdoors and camp etc, im severely limited with my mobility due to MS so I feel unsafe to do such activities. But I find comfort and enjoyment watching your videos so great job Simon
OMG! If you had gone the very next day, it would have been fair weather, blue skies, and great views. However, I'm so glad to see this video. Just a nice soft day. I have a lot of great memories of camping in heavy rain and gale-force winds. My tent would be pushed all the way down to the ground and against my face. When the wind would let up, the sucking sound and pop💢 as the tent would come of my skin, would wake me up every time. My philosophy: You never know how comfortable you are unless you're a little bit uncomfortable.
I’m old, but, my memory is not so diminished that I can’t remember the misery of a cold, windy, wet difficult hike…SHEESH. It’s good to be warm and comfortable…from an old vet, retired in the US, foothills of the Smokies.
Simon, next time boil some water, put it in your bottles and use them in your sleeping bag to heat you and it up. The water can still be used the next day, plus, you need to always change out of your wet stuff into dry so that you will be warm.
Thank you Simon for another brilliant video. They are a complete antidote to an over-scripted, over-produced, over-edited BBC programme. Don't ever stop being you. Bestist wishes, Katie
Great camp out, Simon. Waterproof Bottoms or not, I always have a dedicated set of dry “sleep clothes” for such purposes. I noticed you stayed in your soaked trousers during your food prep scenes. Also, could have put your meal pouch “inside “ your jacket while rehydrating. Hyperthermia is no joke. Thanks for all your extra efforts in sharing under challenging conditions!
I (rather foolishly) decided against taking any clothes to change into, in fact I rarely do, but I wish I had on this occasion! I did move it inside my jacket off camera - much toastier!
To all Simon’s international viewers - how to kit-up for a camp in the British isles: 1) it’s raining 2) it’s about to start raining 😉 - great vid Simon as always and nice to meet you Craig (and that weather looked horrible!) hope to see more collaborations 🎉 👏
Both times I went to Edale was on the train from Manchester, at 13 then in my 60s. First time we walked over Mam Tor to Castleton and hitched a ride back in a police car! Great area.
Welcome to my neck of the woods. I knew you were still going to be damp in the morning. Never a good idea to try and dry out in your sleeping bag on top of a peak. You'd have had a far more comfortable night going Commando in your bag. Every day's a school day! Also, it seems a shame to be up there with a buddy but hunkered down in seperate tents. Two-person tent next time, maybe? Having been up and down Kinder more times than I can remember, plus living in Cumbria as a youth, I always pack warmer than the season/conditions suggest. I'd rather have the extra weight in my bag knowing I'm going to be toasty and comfortable. Still a good video though. Hope you're night in the woods was more enjoyable.
Great show Great energy I'm older so I have to drive to the cafe for a full English breakfast. I really miss camping. No electricity No running water No toilets No cooking facilities Great days
Alway enjoyable, did have flashback of your last time on the Carneddau. It always a call when you put the wets on, especially when going up hill. It really telling how the cold can make and easy task much more difficult, Many thanks for sharing your adventures.
I always look forward to a Simon video. Somehow getting in a sleeping bag with wet clothes on didnt seem like a good idea. Hard to stay warm when your wet. Happy you didn't get hypothermia. Thanks for taking us along.
In this sort of weather I always carry a dry bag with a set of merino wool base layers in there and my synthetic down jacket, Also I never use down items, living in the lakes I have found that even a couple odlf days of just damp weather really degrades their performance. ATB Simon, thanks for the video.
Lovely video - I always take some long johns and a change of long sleeve top for sleeping in plus dry socks! worth the extra weight! A much nicer way up is via Hayfield and Knder Low End :)
What a coincidence to see this, we done the same this weekend only we stayed in the Woolpacks area of Kinder Scout it's a lot flatter and less boggy, and we had beautiful sunshine (sorry to rub it in 😅) yeah Fjallraven trousers in driving rain are about as waterproof as a flannel, great video as always Simon, hope the next one is dryer for you 😊
I think those wet clothes would have come off and the water proofs on and into the sleeping bag for me. I never warm up once damp, I AM old, so that might be part of it. Good video regardless and nice to see you!
haha. I had just woken up and started watching this... and the freaked out when I saw him driving on the "wrong" side of the road. I was like "holy shit, this dudes crazy. Woke me up pretty quick 🤣😂
Gortex till end ex my friend! 😉 I find leaving wet kit on in the tent to try and dry it only gets condensation in the inner. I leave it in the vestibule and put it on wet in the morning works for me on through hikes. Great stuff as always 👍
Watching again a year later…again from my recliner, on a warm, 46 F/ 8 C, day. £1,000 for a Terranova, or £1,000 for a Hilleberg tent, you guys must love it. Thanks for sharing…from an old fan, retired in the US.
It's always a treat to watch your adventures and a joy to watch you enjoying and laughing the whole time, no matter the circumstances 😁. Bless you and stay safe 🙏.
The wind would have driven me bonkers. The constant flapping of the tent would have kept me up all night. I would have least needed a few beers to put me to sleep. Excellent video mate. Keep them coming i look forward to every one.
It’s good to see you out camping in my home county, and up at my favourite place in Derbyshire for an overnight camp. The Kinder Plateau is vast, you would have to walk a full 26 kilometres to explore all of it up there! And pretty much all of those are above 600 meters too.. It is quite varied terrain visually once you come to know it, so I wouldn’t call it featureless at all, personally. I highly recommend you have a camp at the ‘Woolpacks’ next time your up this way! 👍🏻 The weather does close in up there fast and is very changeable, and you rarely get to see both a sunset and sunrise during an overnighter, especially this time of year..
Great vid as always, thx. If I might suggest, never, ever wear wet gear in your bag. Always carry a set of long johns: to sleep in and you can just put rain pants over those and walk out. If you can pack in beer, you can pack in some under thermals.
Tough, wet, miserable conditions, made enjoyable for us by spending time with you, Simon. The hike down was lovely, beautifully filmed. Hope you don't come down with a cold. We'll check out Craig's video too 'East Anglian Bushcraft.' Love you Simon, ATB from a West Aussie family. Edit: next fortnight's video should see you at 200K :) so happy for you.

Assuming you had dry night time things you could have changed in to? Just back from your home turf, Three Rivers again. Jodi send her regards. Thanks for taking us with you. Really love to join you in a canoe camp sometime if you fancy it? Atb. Paul.
Nothing beats coming into shelter in the tent after a very wet day on the mountain. Getting a hot brew and some food. changing into dry clothing, unpacking the sleeping bag and get warm and cosy. The mountains are beautiful but can be challenging.

Awesome stuff Simon, great to see you out and about again.👍🏻
A little pair of PMR walkie talkies could keep the conversation going in separate tents.
Another good video. Thanks for sharing.
Two of the best people to camp in that weather 😂😂
Awesome video buddy! You cant beat that Derbyshire weather 👀😂
Your Flextail should have a deflation setting too for whipping the air out of the mattress, makes life so much easier!
Don't think Kent Survival could manage that physical challenge, Simon 😂😂
I love kent survival vids!
I can’t believe you wore your wet clothes to bed. That would make you miserable. Good video.
Good video Simon, you did look cold at times. Shows how quickly things can turn to poo if you're not careful. Kind regards Rob
