Loop Phase 1 -Setting up my 'Artificial Pancreas'

  • Yes, it happened and I'm now on Loop. If you don't know what loop is: It is an app template for building an automated insulin delivery system. It is a stone resting on the boulders of work done by many others. This system has been created by a number of very intelligent individuals in our community who just got tired of lack of innovation in the commercial space or regulation stopping some amazing technologies being introduced into our daily ups and down. And so, loop was created. It's an open source and its constantly being modified and upgraded and new pumps, new cgms are being added as you are reading this.
In this video, I show the process of setting up loop. It is a DIY automated system, so you need to do a lot of things on your own, but you don't. Because we are a community. So, there is lots of support on amazing websites like Loop Docs:
    loopkit.github...
or Facebook groups and million other places.
This is just a first video about loop but there is more ...
PHASE 1 is building it. My next video will be about PHASE 2 which is using it in Open Loop mode, so you still need to authorise the system to make basal corrections and then PHASE 3 is when system automatically does basal adjustments (sort of like Medtronic 670G).
And I will be doing ever more videos about loop after those 3.
So, subscribe if you want to follow my journey and follow me on Instagram for daily updates about LOOP.
So here we are, let me know what you think about Loop. Are you using it? Would you use it? What's stopping you?

Thank you for this video, about a month ago, I built the closed-loop system for my 17y/o daughter, but she is afraid to use it. I'm going to watch your videos a couple of times with her. The directions to build the loop were extremely thorough; however, USING the loop - not so easy. It's perfect timing too, since we're in lock-down due to this virus! #silverlining

Kamil - thank you so much for making and publishing this video. Looping is something I'm really interested in, although I'm not yet a pump user (so it's a case of one step at a time for me!) The amazement and joy in your face as it started is awesome. I can only speak for myself, but randomly coming across your videos is the reason I now have a bluecon, and by extension, the reason I'm using Spike, and the same for my sister, who's also a T1 and so I got her into the same set up. Can't thanks you enough mate - and I'm looking forward to stages 2 and 3.

Kamil, huge well done. Thanks so much for sharing your loop journey with us and I hope you are continuing to love it. Just watched phase 1 & 2, so will be turning in for 3 & 4. 😁
You explain things in such a straight forward way, you’ve no idea how much your videos have inspired me when previously I didn’t think I had the ability to try anything remotely techie!
I remember reading your posts on the libre page last year, excited about the nightrider coming to market and everyone shot you down in flames on there.
Then I found your ambrosia group and haven’t looked back.
Thanks to you, I totally grasped the concept of nightscout/Xdrip iOS reader - now spike and my son’s rockin the MiaoMiao now. (After an unsuccessful attempt with Blucon)
I joined the loop group but again felt a bit overwhelmed by it all, until I saw you were setting it up. 😊 knew you’d help break it all down and demonstrate just how straight forward it actually is.
You’re a star and I really, really appreciate the time and energy (pun intended) you put into sharing your experiences with others.
I wasn’t sure looping would be right for my son yet (he’s a teen, looks after himself ok but still relies on me a lot to make decisions) but I can see already that it would be a great solution for him.
Just need to research sourcing/financing the right pump as he’s also on the 640G.
Thanks so much 🙏🏼 and keep up the amazing work for our community!

Are you able to use the infusion sets/reservoirs that you have for your 640G with the old pump?
I don’t think you mentioned in your video or perhaps I’ve missed it but Do I need a Mac? I read that I needed access to one with Xcode.

But I guess DanaRS + AAPS is still the better option, as the pump can talk back. You see in your app if the insulin was properly delivered etc.

Hey there. So the hardest part of looping is finding that old medtornic pump. I would suggest checking out facebook groups like pay forward diabetes. Or just check online or ask your nurse. They might have some old pumps. Lots of useful tips on loopdocs.com websiye. And miaomiao sends your BG values to spike which gives low/high alerts 😄😀 i hope that helps ☺️

I enjoyed watching this a lot I am type 1 diabetic patient for 20 yrs and I have the old medtronic pump and i am very excited to be on the loop. But wanna ask you :
1- if I am on the closed loop system, does it mean that I do not have to blous for the food I eating?? I do not have to do the carb counting any more or calculate my insulin doses??
2- I am an android user, so do i need to change it to iphone or now it is compatible with android?
3- How can I get the app on android If it is available? And how can I get this device to start?
Thx a million in advance dear 🙏

THANK YOU . I mean it.for the all info you have given to us.As i understand i need a mac computer to install the app to the iphone and then a developer`s account if i don't have to reinstall it every week.my question is that do i need a mac computer after the initial installation.Sorry if i am asking a stupid question but i am kind a bombarded myself with this new info and maybe i confused myself . I can get an iphone but i dont think I can afford a mac comp/book for sake of the sustainability of my loop.

Hi. so if you have developers account, you do not need it for 1 year. As this app will work for 356 days. However, it is recommended to update your app ones in a while to get new features, improved performance, fixed bugs etc. Hope this makes sense. But overall only ones a year

Two questions: 1. Can you loop with an Android phone? and 2. Where can one purchase a compatible pump. I've seen old Medtronic pumps on eBay at $1,000.

Great vid, if only some genius could make more new pumps "compatible". Especially the ones you can control on Bluetooth straight from the phone. Omnipod is a it uncomfortable with the big patch that is non removable.

There is lots of geniuses and I thought it’s that simple but it really isn’t. They are working really hard and we should all thank them. And I’m very happy that you enjoyed my video 🙈😆

This loop tech is so confusing... I have a hard time to setting it up, because there is no step by step guide. I am advanced computer user, but this does not help at all. There is just a fractions of information across internet. You have to be a developer to set this up? Do I have to pay someone to do this loop? If this loop uses special algorithms to calculate insulin doses, why do you have to do so many manual setups?
