Just wanted to say thank you for your great channel. I'm a newly diagnosed T1D and your channel is introducing me to great information that I haven't found elsewhere. I spent a Saturday morning binge watching your videos and am now subscribed :) This video and the Apple Watch video were particularly helpful - and they convinced me that I needed an Apple Watch! My doctor just prescribed the Dexcom, and soon I will be able to see my BG by glancing at my watch (mind blowing!). Thanks again for the great content. Cheers!
I guess no one knows how to bolus for cereals ;) love watching your videos it helps a lot to understand new things going on around the globe :) stay blessed
I like to use Diabetes:M it is very user-friendly and very complete, you can also use it as a CGM 9Libre/Dexcon) and it does a lot of statistics with your data that I consider interesting (like the sensibility of insulin, and proportion CHO/U). And it also calibrates very easily by just entering new reading of a finger prick, (which you can differentiate from cgm read)
Hello, do you think it's worth it to buy the full version of the app? I saw the free version isn't that useful, i would like to look for food and see the carbs but I can't do it. Do you recommend paying the complete version?
For those type 1 diabetics that are not using a pump and cgm but are manually bolusing based on blood sugar level, food carbs, insulin on board, exercise prediction, etc I recommend Rapid Calc ( I use on iphone) and I find it brilliant for calulating bolus dose. I use in conjunction with freestyle libre reading. The fact that libre result lags finger prick blood test doesn't seem to make much difference. If you are already using a pump I assume that the bolus calc will be done by pump and you won't need rapid calc. If you using pens give rapid calc a go. Great video thanks I am going to give snaq a go.
I’ve not eaten Pizza in forever but I have to say I would still (probably take a larger amount of FA insulin) for the carbs not taking the fats into consideration as I would usually not be having an active day if I’m eating like this plus taking into account insulin resistance. I guarantee I’d probably still spike after this so I’d go for a brisk 15 min walk to “walk it off”. That’s my short term way of dealing with a self caused miscalculation of carbs/Insulin ratio.
Great video ,great Nerdiabetic has usual (with this little english accent ) [ think about a carpet or rug for the audio ]. An application for better gessing the food glucose "index or grammes"would be useful , evin with the loop -s. Thank you for all the information. Keep and stay safe.
I also love that Loop writes dexcom data directly to Health for the InPen app. It made it so I didn't have to manually enter a blood sugar to give insulin. I changed my transmitter during my pump break and forgot to add it to Loop. I didn't realize that Loop was the reason I was getting real time data! I hope Health gets real time BG data sometime in the future for apps like this...

6:54 For a while I also used to have issues doing bolus for cereals. But then I found out that the milk is the one messing with my values. I tried using unsweetened vanilla almond milk (only 1 carb per cup) and then just bolus on the carb count on the cereal. Although not perfect, it improved much better my BG after the bolus. Then, you just have to trial and error less insulin per carbs just with cereal because most cereals are mostly fibers. And if you have a pump, try delaying the insulin delivery a bit (fibers take longer to absorb). If you hate the flavor of unsweetened vanilla almond milk (and your cereal isn't sweet enough), just add a bit more of low/zero carbs, artificial sweeteners.
Another Great Video!! What app do you use if any that calculates you bolus as a result of the carbs you are eating. I currently use Diabetes:M but their food scanner is rubbish for UK food.
Thanks Aaron! I use Loop which had a bolus calculator for my insulin pump. Many apps have bolus calculator. mySugr is great and has a built in bolus calculator (in EU and UK) and robust food diary.
Bolus for ‘naked’ carbs is tricky for two reasons (based on my knowledge). 1. There is no fat to slow the digestion of the carbs (e.g. with cereal or porridge) 2. You’re typically eating in the morning, meaning you’ve been fasting over night. Food is digested faster. You also have very little active insulin in your system, meaning your liver does not know it should absorb sugar. There are two possible ways to solve this problem and get better sugars. 1. Bolus an initial correction 1 hour before eating, that would adjust you to 4.5 mmol, then inject 20 mins before for your food 2. Bolus 30 mins before, noting your ratio is typically significantly lower in the mornings Chinese food is FULL of sugar - and so bolus 30 mins before for it!
