    Very interesting. I have a comment though. I thought the cord was relatively mobile within the vertebrae but this theory makes it seem like the cord is"tied" via the meninges to the vertebrae which would create the tension in the spine.

    • @Janzenandjanzen
      @Janzenandjanzen  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The anatomy has been simplified down in the video to make it more understandable. The meninges and the spinal cord can both be areas of tension as well as the cauda equina. We weren't trying to claim that it was attached to the meninges, but merely to visually demonstrate nerve tension's role in relation to scoliosis. For a more thorough understanding, we recommend reading Butler's Mobilisation of the Nervous System - www.elsevier.com/books/mobilisation-of-the-nervous-system/butler/978-0-443-04400-7

      @@Janzenandjanzen thank you for the response and the reference. I actually just purchased the book. I guess the gist of my original response was to get a better understanding of how a shortened spinal cord tension could physically change the structure of the vertebral column. I'm imagining the real tension on the column coming from the nerve roots. Thanks again. I'm looking forward to reading the book.

    • @hilarylien829
      @hilarylien829 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      More specifically, would schroth or SAS could help to release the spinal cord tension and what’s the theory? I read through the comments below and found someone mentioning “Advanced Spinal Mobilisation Instrument”. May I also ask ASMI’s impact on spinal cord tension?

    • @Janzenandjanzen
      @Janzenandjanzen  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Hilary! Nerve tension (spinal cord tension) is treated non-surgically through routine stretching but is done in a way to prevent any worsening of the scoliosis. This is primarily for children and teens as it is the nerve tension driving the formation of the scioliosis due to the spine buckling, curving and rotating to accompdate the tight spinal cord. The stretching we use solves two problmes: (1) it is done in a position where the spine is supported from any further collapse as simply stretching a tight cord would cause the spine to try and collapse further in an effort to relieve the tension. (2) we elimate any "escapres" where the body will again try and relieve the tension from the strech. Think of "escapes" as like when you bend a kneww during a stretch to mkake it less intense. By gradually and safely strecthing the tight cord, we reduce nerve tension and reduce the driving force behind the scoliosis, while also enabling the spine to be straigthened to a greater degree in brace. Again, this is primarily for children and teens as adults who are already skeletally mature already have undergone the curve and rotation that is the hallmark of scoliosis. You can learn more about how nerve tension drives a scoliosis to develop here: scoliosiscarecenters.com/nerve-tension-and-scoliosis/

    • @Janzenandjanzen
      @Janzenandjanzen  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hilarylien829 From what we can tell the ASMI does nothing to treat spinal cord tension as spinal cord tension needs to be treated in a way that (1) prevents the body from trying to adapt from increased tension (increased even more during a stretch) by collapsing or rotatating even further while (2) preventing any "escape" from the stretch. Just like with stretching a muscle, stretching nerves or the spinal cord needs to be done safely, and over time to increase the length of the tissue. There are many published scientific articles and research regarding stretching of nerves, connective tissue (ie ligaments), muscles, etc. which can provide a useful "guide" to the principles of nerve stretching. We were unable to find anything within the published scientific literature regarding the ASMI.

    I'm a chiropractor with a keen interest in scoliosis and I am surprised I have not heard this theory before - I imagine that testing, in an adolescent, the rib hump in both standing and kneeling positions would isolate neural tension. Do you do this?

    • @Janzenandjanzen
      @Janzenandjanzen  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Sam, the two most common published methods for performing the Adam's forward bending test are standing and sitting. The nervous system is arranged in such a way that the seated position would alleviate tension. If nerve tension is the cause of the rib hump, one would expect the seated position to have less of a rib hump than the standing position. This is is fact the finding of at least one published paper comparing the standing versus sitting Adam's forward bending test where there was a ~10% increase in trunk symmetry when the individuals were sitting as opposed to standing: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17137516

      is it really just for the young? Im 35 the school notified scoliosis in Jr high but didnt address till i first started working unloading boxes for stores and i was appointed to surgery but instead i just stuck to physical therapy especially after hearing how with rods can be more painful and can fracture& break inside so i really stress the importance of alternative healings i even had prayer that did release a bit and corrected but it formed back again and i believe its the ptsd i also suffered from and then having abusive boyfriends that brought more tensions lead to more discomfort like i was being twisted into a pretzel trying to belittle&then uplift me at times was so brutal and damaging not just emotionally but physically and not surprisingly the abuse progressed into physical abuse which im sure being thrown at timea has caused damage too as my hips are uneven so.. But besides all that im trying to find relief hoping this would help fron root cause which is the nerve tension spinal cord and tgat makes sense relating to actual nervousness with my ptsd.

      Plank and swimming (freestyle n breaststroke) helps...stay active, dont just sit or or lay on chair or bed, avoid lifting heavy things...hope this help...i survived 40 degree scoliosis, was lower than that, it appears, i had scoliosis but very low degree, i didnt even realize, in 2013, due to overweight dumbbell lifting (14 kg), when i use my left hand, 'something' happened, i felt intense traumatic pain on my left back, i stopped lifting, after a month or two i started lifting again, for another 3 years, in 2016, i felt something is wrong with my body, getting weaker, easily tired, heavy breathing, i met a doctor, had xray, and told i had 40 degree curve to the right, so, i assume, the time when i felt that intense traumatic pain was the start of this nightmare, the pain was from my bent spine, the weight lifting made it worse day by day, doctor heard my story, n said no more lifting, no surgery recommended, just swimming, regularly, has been swimming for 2 years, i felt better in just 6 months, but not significantly, i added plank in my long term recovery agenda, oh, and a lot of prayers, and here i am, since 2018, im so close to my pre 'injury' state, prime n fit again, but no more lifting ever again, swimming had become less regular due to work, i do daily plank, will keep doing the two for a lifetime, as long as i still could, if i can, you guys can too, n dont forget to thanks GOD!

      Hello @ceatlove; depending on where in your upper thoracic area the curve is it may be relatively stable. If it is occurring within the T1-T6 region these tend to be stable. However if your curve is more in the T4-T10 region it may be helpful to look into exercises, breathing techniques, etc. If you have an x-ray, MRI or other image of your curve one of our doctors would be happy to review it and provide some additional evaluation: scoliosiscarecenters.com/contact-a-care-director/

      Hi Donato. Surgery is typically recommended once a curve reaches "surgical threshold" which is usually 40 or 50 degrees depending on the doctor/clinic. However, for children and teens there is still room to prevent surgery by utilizing their adolescent growth spurts to our advantage through bracing in conjunction with nerve stretching and physiotherapeutic exercises for scoliosis. The idea begind the comprehensive treatment being to reduce nerve tension to reduce the driving force, restore range of motion and allow the spine to be straightened as much as possible, utilizing a hyper corrective brace to hold the spine straigth during adolescent growth spurts and use them to our advantage, and then hold the spine in a corrective position until skeletal maturity and then slowly wean off the brace so that the results are permanent and the spine's supporting muscles are strong. We are happy to rveiew any xrays or mris your sister may have and suggest next steps, even if we cannot directly help. You can contact one of our care directors and doctors here: scoliosiscarecenters.com/contact-a-care-director/
