Honestly, Freddy's rules changing from movie to movie makes sense, as he's a local legend powered by the fear of his victims and thus, can only do what they BELIEVE he can do. For example, Nancy believed he could be pulled into the real world, so he could be. He was able to enter the real world through Jesse because his understanding was formed by Nancy's diary, etc.
Good theory, much like how he tailors the dreams, the dreams are just variations he made based on his victim’s worldviews and understandings. Although some inconsistencies are definitely bad writing. Although if you write those more fantasy based stories it’s hard to keep track of the rules.
That’s a neat theory but ultimately that can’t solely be the case because even before haunting his teenage victims in their dreams in the very first nightmare movie freddy was making his way back to life through dreams to a certain degree through the dreamscape if you want to call it that. So he could start his ultimate revenge killing spree rampage on the first group of children of elm street such as Nancy, Glen, Tina and rod. And then keep in mind in nightmare on elm street part 3 the Dream Warriors it was revealed to us that the elm street children in general had no recollection of Freddy and who he was since he had been killed so many years ago, to the point where the once infamous serial killer wasn’t even mentioned or brought up towards them at all in the slightest by their parents for obvious reasons, so if that was the case then what fear was Freddy feeding off of then if they didn’t know him at all to be begin with. See My view point is that Freddy can logically haunt peoples Dreams as long as the Dream demons exist and if humanity’s act of dreaming is still in motion Freddy will always be able to kill his victims “with belief or even without it as well”…
I honestly believe that Freddy died for good in Freddy vs Jason. The last blink was Englund’s farewell to the character and to the audience. He even said in an interview that that was Freddy’s last action.
Robert Englund often tends to explain various things in the films, which in a way is cool and shows his interest in the character. But in reality, it has been said several times that it was just to make the outcome of the fight less clear.
I don't think that he did because he never truly "dies". Think of him as kind of like a Greek god, rather than dying, his presence fades but he lingers.
As long as it is thought about it never goes away. I hate to be that person but to save you from possible embarrassment in the future it was a wink and not a blink. Ugh! I hate myself lol......
In the comic book freddy vs Jason vs ash. It takes place after 5 years after the movie. It shows what happens to Lori and will. It also brings back former characters from the series. It's actually a really good read.
I'll never forget being 12 years old and watching my Freddy's Revenge VHS tape in the living room one Saturday evening. My dad had wandered in about half way through and sat down on a recliner. The pool party scene comes on, there's a shot in that scene with a wagon full of beers and they start popping and exploding on their own. My father (who was known as being a man of few words) pipes up with a passion in his voice and says "No Freddy, not the beer!".
It’s nice to see all of this laid out in order because his backstory seems so complicated, and his soul is doomed right from the get-go. Son of a nun who was raped, becomes a murderous father, the dream people, etc. He had no chance of NOT being evil.
Honestly, I still hold to the belief that regardless of how one is born or even the upbringing, we all still have the freedom of choice to be better or worse. We all have good and evil inside of us, but it is our actions that feeds into which side defines us.
My absolute favorite horror series from my childhood. Robert Englund was brilliant in bringing smart humor to the role. I don’t think anyone can match him in being almost likable as Freddy.
Taking 90 minutes to explain Krueger is why I own the box set of all Nightmare films. He has an immense amount of depth for a horror villain and it’s definitely what makes him stand out among them. Usually I like simple rules but dreams are the furthest thing from simple so it makes sense his rules are confusing
To me these movies scream Nostalgia reminds me of what it was like to be a kid and be afraid of the cheesiest things. Took me a while but I found a VHS set complete obviously it's missing more modern ones like Jason versus Freddy and so on but still one of my favorite movie sets. I think watching them on a VHS gives it this this creepy vintage look that I don't know how to explain but it's so enjoyable
In 84, my mom rented me a Star Trek film, but Nightmare on Elm Street was in the box. Being a typical boomer mom, she put it in the VCR, and watched it with me, saying it was the first film to really scare her in years. She loved it. It was a lucky thing. That film for me is very nearly perfect.
@@jameswhorton1973 i was like, 16, so i don’t remember the actual film- it was likely Star Trek 4. So maybe it was 85. That was a long time ago. But thank you for taking the time to correct my shit math and lack of precise dating. I feel much better knowing there are selfless humans out there to step up and answer the call of correcting dates in a fucking TH-cam comment. I salute you, sir. Huzzah
@@allendean9807 Oh, I saw Star Trek 4 in the theater--1986 I believe. So yes, the VHS definitely WAS a thing by then. This is not me correcting you again on the date--it's me saying "Yes, this story could indeed have happened" because when you adjust the dates, it DOES match up and make sense. :) Also, your mom renting a Star Trek movie and watching it with you on a VHS tape sounds absolutely like something out of _my_ childhood, lol. XD
The False Awakening Loop segment of the video sent chills down my spine. When I was younger, I had this false awakening 3 times and I remember spending the rest of the day paranoid that everything wasn’t real. That I would wake up again at any moment
I sometimes woke up from dreams that seemed real because I’d been spooked awake, but I knew I was at home in my bed with my dogs immediately because I’d say something immediately after I’d wake up from that dream.
i’ve had that happen before and it’s so jarring. i also have realistic dreams of mundane things like doing the dishes. i have to ask my family if something was real sometimes
No matter how cheesy the movies get, I love all of them and Robert Englund just brings such a great performance to each movie. Freddy will always be my favorite horror movie villain.
@Thirdeye387 In the late 80s early 90s. My dad volunteered for an organization that built a haunted house every Halloween. So as a small child I'd go with him in the evening when they were building it. One year they built a boiler room and themed it with Freddy. That year a window was busted in the building they were renting and the glass guy couldn't make it until the next day. So my Dad and I brought sleeping bags to spend the night inside the haunted house. I was about eight years old. The only bathroom was located at the back of the building. Which required you to walk through the boiler room. Even knowing it was all fake it was STILL creepy AF to walk back there by myself. With a flashlight to use the restroom.
I always wondered how Freddy worked and his history, thanks so much for covering it. When I have bad dreams I get mad and can dream myself as in control of the dream and defeat the nightmare. I had a lot of nightmares as a kid, it's a handy coping skill.
Idk the whole segment on Jesse was theory based on speculation. Despite many of the individuals involved later coming out as gay at the time they have gone on record as having stated that gay subtext was unintentional. That includes the script writer (who came out as gay) as well as Jesse's actor (who also came out as gay).... though to be fair they have stated they still took pride in their work and liked that people saw stuff they hadn't.
@alexrice1870 I mean if that were true he would have known what I said too lol All it took was a simple search. But over all the amount of research cz puts in is astounding I do agree.
So I fell asleep with TH-cam playing and woke up about 10 minutes into this video. I'm not making a Freddy connection here just saying I'm glad I stumbled on the channel. Quality stuff.
I still feel that Freddy's "-this... is God" line is severely underrated. It's an amazingly improvised line that not only mocks Tina's plea, but it also hints to Freddy's god complex with his powers. He remains convinced he's invincible even when Nancy figures out how to defeat him. Freddy has been surprised and injured throughout the series, but he still trys to come out on top.
I thought it meant he was saying (literally) his face if HE himself is god.Or was telling Tina god is evil or his burned face represented what is or how he felt about GOD
But i mean Freddy must be a godly being in my eyes because of the fact that even when humanity turned against him and the children would defeat him he would still came back to life right? Which is very similar to the ideology of god.
I always interpret the ending of FvJ to be both of them walking out of an extinguished lake of fire in hell or purgatory of some sort. Meaning they both died in the real world. Which answers why Freddy is able to wink whilst decapitated. And because it’s technically the last part of Freddy Krueger’s timeline, it gives me a better feeling of satisfaction to see Jason walking him back into the afterlife after their big showdown. Obviously, Jason comes back at some point because Jason X is the final part of Jason’s timeline, but for me this is Freddy’s official ending. For him to finally die doesn’t let all the fighting that Nancy, Alice, etc. be for nothing. They all sort of get to live vicariously through Laurie in that moment and they all win. Plus I think that all horror franchises deserve definitive endings at some point, and to me, this is the most definitive and satisfying interpretation of the ending of FvJ.
I like this interpretation. I always have a soft spot for Jason he sort of deserved his peace at the end. Although he did go to space but I guess the logic and continuity constantly get thrown out of the window in his franchise.
@@Nicholas_Chen_ The first law of franchises is that all franchises will eventually get awful, degrading more and more with each sequel, usually fairly consistently. The second law of franchises is that all franchises will eventually go to space. 🤷
There was an alternate ending that didn't take shape due to the licensing not panning out. In the scene Freddy and Jason continued their fight in Hell, when chains fly out and pin them down. Then Pinhead appears and says something to the effect of "Gentlemen, what seems to be the problem?"
I love all these horror movie villains having rivals I mean the idea of a human surviving multiple encounters with a god like creature is such a cool idea to me
It's not actually supposed to be Freddy in NN though, it's some kind of demon masquerading as him because of Heather Langerkamp's fears. Good film though, especially after Freddy's Dead!
As someone who grew up in a abusive home (For Context not Sexual Abuse but physically, psychology, and emotional). I can say from that personal experience that both me and my brother took pride and even joy in the fact we could take the physical pain. We took a weapon away from our abuser and when you have little control and few victories that's a big thing.
@E2B487 As a kid I was full of rage but I wasn't sociopathic so I didn't take my rage out on other kids or animals. I actually developed intense empathy for people and animals who were being mistreated. But I had to get rid of the rage so I used self harmed as a outlet in my early teen this is how I accidently built up a pain tolerance. Once I did I took joy in knowing I took something from my abuser. I moved out when I was 18 my step father who was my abuser died 16 years ago. I've dealt with my demons and I have never even been in a physical fight in my life with anyone outside of my step father who I knocked on his ass when I was about 15 and that ended him hitting me. I don't have a violent temper, I don't believe in crying of spilled milk, & I believe in timeouts if small fights start to escalate and comeback with clearer and cooler heads. Given my upbringing I think I'm a pretty well adjusted person.
@E2B487Indeed. People he's talking about are physically abused children who needed help. He didn't say anything creepy but shared a painful reality of his childhood. OP, I hope you don't have to take pain anymore.
Thank you for this video! People have criticized the remake for "making" freddy a child molester and i try to tell them he's always been a child molester, it just wasn't as overt in the original series.
Sorry, accidentally sent that prematurely. Anyways, I think you're totally correct that the original vision of Wes Craven, was of the taker of innocence in both capacities...he r@%$d & killed the kids. The problem is that the horrendous remake, reduced him to a simple chester molester. He had NEVER EVEN taken a life b4 the parents burned him. This really weakened the mythos in my view. Fred Krueger never spilled actual innocent blood until post mortem. Also it was a CGI mess that couldn't hold a candle to the original.
Yes! I was just talking about Freddy to my daughter last week or so and I told HER he was a child molester. I remember catching that impression from the first movie, and I watched that as a kid in the 80’s.
The original Is superior, but I liked the remake with Earl Haley: It was very dark, dramatic, scary, freaking and mysterious. Id say that It made some Pieces and scenes even better than the First installment. Last, many years ago, I need to tell I had a dream (or a Nightmare) where I was chased by Freddy, and atmosphere location and events looked like the last movie. This movie loses interest and fashion at the last 30 minutes, becoming predictable, boring, doped with special effect, too much long and a bit pathetic (anyway much less pathetic than the Nightmare 2s ending)
@@ivanborgia3580 i agree. I think the remake gets too much hate. Did you know Jackie Earl Haley auditioned with Johnny Depp for the original movie? As we know, Johnny Depp got cast, but Earl Haley di not, but then went on to play freddy in the remake 20 years later.
You’re the first person I have actually heard talk about hypnagogic hallucinations. As someone who suffers from them myself (mainly if I’m in a stressful situation combined with sleep deprivation) I feel heard, seen and understood 😂 For me they are auditory, so I just kinda start hearing familiar voices having normal-ass conversations, but as soon as I try to listen in, I’m too awake so they fade away. 😔
Wow! I didn't know that it had an actual name. My doctors just called them auditory hallucinations. It's cool to know that other people exist who can understand that we don't just hear voices talking to us directly. It's almost like listening in on a parallel dimension or something.
@@fjolliff6308 yeah, there's Hypnagogic and hypnopompic hallucinations, one happens as you're falling asleep, and the other as you're waking up, they can be auditory or visual if I recall correctly, I've suffered from both types for years, and the auditory ones are startling, but the visual ones are utterly terrifying depending on what you're seeing, which usually for me, is a person standing stalk still, or something equally frightening, such as the time I saw a swarm of spiders covering my wall, makes sleeping so freaking difficult xD
@@PrincessSunnyoftheSandWings the worst thing that ever happened was hearing my friends screaming my name for some reason, just as loud as if they were right next to me, that scared me, but normally it’s not really bad 😭
I love the cast picture in the New Nightmare segment. I think it is cool Heather and Robert have stayed pretty tight all these years. Also New Nightmare is super underrated because I dont think people really knew what to make of meta-horror back then.
My mom took me and my lil bro to see Freddy's dead( with the coolest 3d glasses on a Friday night when it premiered. Coolest mom ever😂I think my ɓrothér was like7
@@cmaden78 I think that movie was in... 96? I don't remember exactly, but I know it gets a bad rap. I thought it was pretty good. Besides, it has a Johnny Depp cameo.
There is only one Freddy Krueger and it's Robert Englund. There is certain actors that just embody their characters and robert is Freddy his voice is one of a kind
Hailey did a great job and it’s sad that the reboot didn’t get sequels. I do feel like they should have leaned on the child slasher trope more than the molester route. But hailey was an excellent successor in the role. It’s the most seriously toned nightmare film since the Dream Warriors.
@@jamichealruiz Absolutely. I could never throw any kind of disrespect towards Englund. Have you or anyone else in these comments seen the movie he’s directed 976-EVIL? It’s an awesome movie with a pretty solid plot and effects.
Not sure if it was pointed out in the comments but at 56:58 that is not just some random PSA host but Johnny Depp. Which for it being the “Final Nightmare” was a nice nod to the first movie.
I actually got to meet Robert Englund once at the only comic con I ever went to. Sadly I have long lost the picture with his autograph, but it was still really cool to say hi and get a picture. ^^
@@refeekellis8931 why do you think its a lie? Freddy is (maybe not as popular in 2024, as a lot of those types of names; Lisa, Freddy, James etc are becoming very few and far between but in the 80s-90s and probably decades before was popular so at the very least USED to be) a common name Friday the 13th happens A LOT more then it seems And EVERY (lol had to slip this line from the movies in) town and city, has an elm street The old town I lived in had an elm street, the town I live in NOW has an elm street lol A lot of street, town, county etc names are used a LOT more than you'd think 🧐
As a little kid I was so scared of Freddy and the whole Nightmare universe. Later on it didn’t take to be a brain surgeon to find out that all my troubled/broken home childhood with a terrible father figure was reacting to these flicks and Frederick as the violent father. Anyway, this is an excellent work and very thoroughly put together history of the nightmare realm. Must have taken a long time to make this video! Congratulations on that, keep up the great job!!!
This video was Imho, one of, if not, the best you made so far. Thank you for a wonderfully entertaining movie long story of Freddy's history. Keep up the great work CZ!
13:04 the part that always cracked me up with that scene is her mom popping in to say "you've either got to cut your nails or drop that kind of dreaming". Sure mom, I'll get right on the whole dream thing
Alice Johnson is one underrated final girl just like the two movies she is in (Nightmare 4 and 5). She is the one true survivor that lived through two movies. Being the Dream Master and the mother of the Dream Child, you could even say she is the definitive final girl of this franchise. I love the Christian and devil symbolisms in the Nightmare films it really adds a mythological depth to the character and the lore. Freddy is definitely not the only dream demon in history. It’s creepy to think there might be many previous dream demons throughout history.
Not really. Alice was kept alive by Freddy in both movies for more victims in Part 4 and to grow via her unborn child in part 5. I mean in part 5 she was weirdly alive after Freddy ripping out of her at the end. Different rules kept her alive. She really wasn't stalked the same way as the other kids.
@@bodystorm I disagree. Alice was one of the strongest of them all. She protected her mind so completely - without Hypnocil - that it was closed to Freddy, who still needed her. He had killed all of the Elm Street children and it was only through Alice that he could continue. He was done. He only managed to bring himself back through co-opting the dreams of a fetus. Alice literally pulled herself apart to be rid of him once and for all. I hate how they retconned that in 6. Alice won.
@@the_petty_crocker yea but Nancy is the best out of all cuz she didn't need dream power like everyone else cuz her power was she was never afraid of Freddy Alice had help in part 4 with all the power of her friends and in part 5 Freddy would of killed her if her friend yvonne didnt help her n released Amanda Krueger
@ah1016 Alice also wins in comics. Her and Nancy are amazing. Nancy is a legit dream warrior in comics too. Alice is def final girl as they always confirm she survived etc.
Nancy>alice because, like someone said above, she (Nancy) Is the real dreammaster, she fight him alone struggling against her fears (drunken mother, separated parents, forgiving annoying friends like tina and Rod), She looked right in the eye and said: you are nothing, you exist as I say you exist, you are a ghost of my mind. Its time to end it. He disappeared. Fighting Freddy physically, means fearing him, giving Life and energy. Using super or magical powers against him Is Just a temporary solution. Nancy didnt get chased for years because She won her fears. In Nightmare 3, She get killed because surrounded by weak and scared boys, which dream to be stronger, but they arent, so Freddy alone could have slaught them all. The psichiatric save them. Alice master a part of Nancy's strategy, and a part of luciddream, but in first place, she looks unbeatable because she is chosen to be freddys waitress. Anyway, i dont see why freddy could be defeated by looking in the mirror, when he often used mirrors to hunt (not as his tongue, but often). Its more likely that he cheated to steal her child Later. In the end, Alice is a supersayanblue, Nancy has Ultraistinct
The ping ball part in Freddy vs Jason is one that will forever be burned in my mind. Growing up, was never into horror. So when anyone is watching something horror related, I would leave to another room. But I remember walking out one day to my family watching Freddy vs Jason and saw that Air Yeet scene. I was surprised to how I thought it was funny and not scary. It became my first horror movie I watched, and it all changed from there. Although not praised by critics, it still holds a special place in my heart.
Interesting - I didn't know that there were supposed to be kids 6 years before Nancy and co. I'm sure Glen had the same dreams as Nancy, Rod, and Tina that first night. He gave "a look" when Nancy and Tina were talking at Tina's house.
Yeah me too I thought Nightmare 1 is the very first killing spree as Freddy in that film seems in a 'figuring out' phase where he is discovering his powers and see what's the best approach to torment the kids. He definitely have encountered difficulties with Nancy proving to be a worthy foe and I'd say he even struggled with Tina at first. He became a lot more competent and powerful in 3 and 4 and 5 is where he is having his last stand with Alice's baby. As for the previous victims they were only seen from Freddy's Dead which you really can take the good bits as canon and discard the rest imo...
The line about "six years ago" was from Dream Warriors, she was referring to the first movie. If you mean the in-memorium wall that listed causalities in 1975, 7 years after they torched Freddy and 11 years before the first movie, there's nothing that specifically says it happened in their sleep, they could just be regular accidents and health problems and stuff. Zac does mention SUNDS, but he's making assumptions not backed by the content of the movie.
@I.____.....__...__ no, I meant the memorial wall. Since the classroom in Freddy's Dead is dedicated to Krueger's killings, it's an inference, but I'd say it's a warranted one. The first movie is set in '81 according to the internal timeline.
20:39 I think Nancy was actually still dreaming when she thought she'd pulled Freddy into the real world. That explains things like Marge's body sinking into the bed and Nancy getting trapped in the car at the end.
Either that, or it was the mom dreaming and her nightmare is that Freddy got her daughter but he ended up getting her. Because it is weird how Freddy definitely had them at the end, yet she pops back up in 3. So either Nancy was dreaming, the mom was, or they just retconned it in order to bring Nancy back. Very confusing third act concerning all that
These are my favorite franchises! I don't usually like sequels, but my favorite is the dream child. I was born in '84, so these movies were a huge part of my childhood. Thank you for breaking them down for everyone. If you can still find the Freddy boxset, it has a dvd explaining a lot. It also includes a book sharing how Wes Craven based Freddy off of a real person from his childhood. It's a really cool set.
Freddy has always been the scariest horror character because as a kid I suffered from night terrors. Even after I got over them mostly I still suffered from very vivid and graphic nightmares with the worst part being if I woke up and went back to bed I would actually pick the dream back up. Apparently this is rare but my mom has the same thing. And yes I did have a nightmare with Freddy once after watching Freddy vs Jason. He was chasing me and I woke up as he was about to kill me, but I went back to sleep and I was back in the dream with him and he said “welcome back”. On the plus side this works for good dreams as well.
Dude very similar dream thing with me..except it was my Gmail not my mom. She NEVER questioned my nightmares...she had similar ones. And it works just like u said for the good ones too
Freddy was always my favorite horror movie Villain out of the OGs! Jason, Michael, Leatherface...you have a chance, no matter how slim, to get away from them but Freddy? Nah. You have to sleep. You can't stay away forever. CZ, I have a horror Playlist but I'm gonna have to make a separate playlist for you. I LOVE your history/backstory videos.❤❤
@@rodan9773 Freddy's a dream demon sweetie. Even before you think about not believing in him, he'll get your ass. You seem like the type that'll be the first one off'd.
I like Freddy becasue he's got personality, the same with Pinhead and Chucky. Jason, Michael, and Leatherface are bland, faceless, nothings, they may as well be Bruce from Jaws or the truck from Duel (not the truck from Jeepers Creepers, the creeper did have a bit of personality). This is why some movies can be rebooted since the actor is behind a mask, while others don't work without the original actor.
@@MelaninCosplay Well..sweetie he never kills off right he loves The Fear so he would give you the time to not believe in him. Plus my mind is fucked up enough hes welcome to go throw that mess God knows i don't want to some of the time.
for some reason the stretching the chalk board was such a cool effect for me as a kid. I knew even back then that it was just a practical effect but the thought of stretching and shaping things in a waking dream seem so cool.
If Wes Craven was still alive I'm positive he would of seen this and add on to your work because this type of studying and work is superb. Gotta give props when you see it done well, and this is by far the best vid about A Nightmare on Elm Street.
I heard from a video that Wes grew up in one of /those/ religious families or something like that and was afraid of religion as that’s why there’s a lot of religious allegories in nightmare on elm street

Speaking of waking dreams, has anybody else experienced Exploding Head Syndrome? It’s INSANE. It’s only happened to me three times in over the past 16 years or so. The first time was around 2008. I genuinely thought my pillow had exploded, it was so loud and so real. I’ve also had sensations of someone being in the bathroom next to me, or the sensation that my husband had invited guests over for a cocktail party and I was furious because we hadn’t cleaned the house, I was in my pajamas, and I couldn’t wake myself up to go join the “party.” It feels like it lasts a along time but probably doesn’t, whereas Exploding Head Syndrome is, for me, just one BOOM that feels like it’s right between your ears. I’m very lucky I only really get angry, not terrified. 😬🤞
I have vivid memories of being absolutely terrified after watching "A Nightmare on Elm Street" at a close friend's house in my early days as a refugee kid in America. As I grew into adulthood, I discovered an unsettling connection between my people, the Hmong, and the inspiration behind Freddy Krueger. This connection was rooted in a series of unexplained deaths that occurred at night among relatively healthy young men who had fled the horrors of the Secret War in Laos during the Southeast Asia conflict, commonly known as the Vietnam War.
I’m a huge Freddy fan and I have to say, I knew almost everything in this video. The main things I didn’t pick up on were headlines and the like but well done 👏🏽 Your research is top notch. Off to watch the Pennywise video now, please keep it up.
i've had the luck to meet Robert Englund a couple of years ago and He autographed my dvd movie collection of nightmare on Elm street case, very humble guy. when i told him that i saw the first NOES movie when i was 10 (1991) He was impressed and said : did you parents let you watch my movies at that age? and then He just Laughed. thank you for another fantastic video man !!
I went to see Freddy's Dead with my dad when I was so I'm guessing I was bit younger when I saw the rest of them lol. I'd love to meet him, he seems like such a genuinely chill dude
Also, I've also had the "Enter the fictional world" thing. I've even had times where I used it to try to get out of a nightmare or something by running to an arcade machine/tv screen and trying to turn it on to go wherever it had instead.
Speaking of changing rules, in France, we have a joke that goes, 'Tait-toi, c'est magique' ('Shut up, it's magical'). Personally, I think the 80s slashers (which I adore) didn't necessarily aim to be 'very' coherent. They were mainly designed for fun. It's quite evident in the documentary 'Never Sleep Again.
Exactly. People get so worked up about continuity about movies about literal Dream Demons who possess a man in turn allowing him to kill people in their dreams, and people out here worried that each movie shows him doing something he has never done before. When he does something THAT IS THEM ESTABLISHING HE CAN DO THAT THING. Starting to get as bad as CinemaSins
The work you put into the horror history videos must be insane! Incredibly well done. Thank you. I'm hoping one day we might see a Warwick Davis Leprechaun horror history
To give some continuity from part 2 into 3, I heard from another source that Jesse was the kid who cut off his eyelids. And of course there's my theory that Taryn was the girl in the bar, standing to the left of Jesse who moves out of frame before the coach moves in. Another theory about Freddy's Dead, is that John Doe is really Jacob from part 5, which would explain the ability to go into other people's dreams, albeit very sloppily.
I know that this was about Freddy, but the thing with Jason fearing water is so wild considering just how much he goes into and springs out of the water in the F13 movies. Still, awesome video! The amount of work you put in really shows!
It’s worth noting that prior to Freddy taking over Jesse’s body in the locker room, the coach seemed to be pulling stuff off the shelf as if he had dubious plans for Jesse of his own.

And Freddy’s appearance was based off a homeless guy that scared Wes as a kid New Nightmare Freddy was said to be closest to the actual homeless guy cuz of the trenchcoat I guess And Freddy’s name came from a bully Wes had in school named Fred Krueger
Honestly loved the Freddy Krueger series. You asked if anyone has had a dream where they were sucked into a tv show in their dream and I have had one. In my dream there was a little girl who was worried about a lion and wanted me to help her find him. I had nothing better to do so I said sure. We are walking around and come across a cliff with a bunch of red balloons floating in the air. She gets excited and asks how many are there. I said 12. Theres a pause and then she says 12 is right! Lets count them. We don't need to count them I just told you. 12. 1, 2... Then I wake up and Dora the explorer is on. You stay out of my head little girl!
hypnogogic and hypnopompic (gogic falling asleep, pompic waking up) honestly suck, and can absolutely used in horror in amazing ways, in my experience its like dipping into another reality for a time, knowing your stuck, I've delt with both for years and the impending sense of dread always scares me
This was amazing, thank you for the time you put into this. It was very informative, you obviously did your extensive research. I like how you added things about yourself into this. Great job!
YES YES YES! THANK YOU for finally doing a deep dive into one of the BEST villains in horror history! The intricate story of Freddy and how he was written to kill beats ALL the others of his time... He gets you in your sleep.. humans can't live without sleep... And he creates these elaborate worlds in your dreams to kill you in?! EPIC AF and scared the shit out of me as a kid!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 plus his back story is equally as twisted AF!
Kudos to you on your analysis of my favorite horror franchise of all time. A couple of issues with your takes but you should be commended on your deep dive into the psyche of the movies as well as those of us who have suffered from nightmares since they can remember. That's why I always thought the N.O.E.S movies was a deeper delve into the subconscious of our deeper fears which makes it more real than any other horror movie genre. Nice job. R.I.P Wes... If there is such a thing.
This video is honestly incredible, well done Zach!❤ Also now that you've covered both Freddy and Michael, now you just need to cover Jason to complete the royal horror three! Although with how messy that series is I understand why you wouldn't cover him!😂
Yes!! Freddy is my favorite horror movie villain. Although I know his story, you are always so detailed. I’m interested to find out if there’s anything I missed.
Freddy is absolutely the best villain in horror in the last several decades, but only as played by Robert Englund. He showed how real serial killers take pleasure in the kill, but only if you can maximize the fear of the victim. While I understand they wanted to reboot it, they did not understand that some people play a character so well that nobody else could come close. Plus, Freddy wasn't just some character in a mask. I know his "skin" was actually fake, but the character still had an actual face and not a mask. Deep down, this makes him more terrifying. Jason and Michael didn't speak, but Freddy spoke often to taunt and terrorize the kids all the more. And he also made fun of the people he was terrorizing. Robert Englund was very successful with this aspect. So the audience both loves Freddy for the humor, but dislikes him for the deeds he did. I have loved these films since I was six and watched the first Nightmare and I will continue to love them for the remainder of my days.
I used to have dreams as a kid where I would often enter the world of whatever tv show my mom had watched that night in the living room or watched on a previous night. It didn't matter what genre of tv show it was. The one connecting factor was that in all the dreams the characters were mad at me. These dreams stopped when I reached my teen years. Now my daughter who's going to be ten soon, also has the same types of dreams I used to have whenever she watches tv at night with her grandma. So I try to limit that.
I mean, isn't that what they'd do in a real small town cemetery when so many people died unexpectedly in a short time frame? If the families didn't have pre-bought plots, and the victims are kids so that is unlikely, the cemetery would just bury them all in a new row.
@@APackOfHungryGhostsDepends on the family. In small towns families have their own private cemetery as well. Some have pre bought plots for their entire family including grandchildren to ensure they are all buried together. Small town folks tend to think these through generations into the future. Some would wind up in the manner you spoke of but ALL of them?😂
@@APackOfHungryGhostsI don't think they lived in that small of a town. Was it ever implied outside of the families knowing each other? Which was very common in most neighborhoods back in the day. They were maybe an average sized suburb. Still, I'm sure the plot placement was just for the audience tho lol.
This was an awesome video !! I’m so glad that you went back to cover New Nightmare because it’s the best movie in the franchise outside of the original. It managed to find a way to make the previously terrible movies worth while, using all of those previous movies to create one of the best versions of the character. Great work per always, excited for your next upload !
Don’t get me wrong I love the Elm Street/Freddie films. However, having seen the movies out of order and spaced out made them feel silly and disconnected franchise cash grabs BUT hearing the backstory and connections in order made me appreciate the films and its mythology on a whole new level! Well done, I enjoyed this.
Thank you for someone competently covering Freddy for once! I think it would be cool to include some comics or a separate video for it. Nancy and Alice are badasses in the comics, Nancy even after death... I'm just so sad we won't have Robert in the future for Freddy. Freddy is the BEST.
Actually the final writers of Freddy vs Jason (there were multiple writers trying to get their version released for the epic crossover) actually based their script off everything they took from all the Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th movies as their interpretation of both franchise which was why their version was chosen as the main script. So if Freddy vs Jason explained things in Nightmare on Elm Street as well as things from Friday the 13th franchise (but not everything as there some questions left as well as new questions like Jason’s fear of water that be never showed in his franchise) we got those writers to thank
Another great video! It really is impressive how much research and time you put into these videos while still being able to provide us with so much content and frequent uploads
24:45 Seeing how Jessie was sweating after having his interaction with Freddy. I always just assumed he was controlled because Jessie was in a Fever Dream state which can occur even if you’re awake. Giving Freddy enough leeway he needs to control the real world like he does when people are in full REM sleep.
Honestly, Freddy's rules changing from movie to movie makes sense, as he's a local legend powered by the fear of his victims and thus, can only do what they BELIEVE he can do. For example, Nancy believed he could be pulled into the real world, so he could be. He was able to enter the real world through Jesse because his understanding was formed by Nancy's diary, etc.
this makes so much sense, thank you!
Wow, this is an excellent explanation. I wonder if the writers had this in mind when writing the films.
Dreams change as we experience more of the world
Good theory, much like how he tailors the dreams, the dreams are just variations he made based on his victim’s worldviews and understandings.
Neat

I always got the impression he was gonna be evil regardless of his upbringing.

How is that possible? The first Nightmare on elm street came out in theaters in Nov 1984. The vhs release wasn’t until mid 1985

The False Awakening Loop segment of the video sent chills down my spine. When I was younger, I had this false awakening 3 times and I remember spending the rest of the day paranoid that everything wasn’t real. That I would wake up again at any moment

No matter how cheesy the movies get, I love all of them and Robert Englund just brings such a great performance to each movie. Freddy will always be my favorite horror movie villain.
The reboot can burn in the boiler room for eternity.

If you were a kid when they were in theaters they were everything BUT corny. I had night terrors.

So you passed out and woke to a video about the lore on a dream demon lolz
@@christopher4249 sure that too 😐😐

Yahweh(God) is evil. He condones child killing and pedophilia.
I like this interpretation!

New Nightmare was legitimately creepy too.
It's funny how between movies, so many don't know who he is. So much for people remembering.
There is a lot of creepiness in there but the one that really gets me is Wes Craven's script predicting the conversation ahead.

Thank you for this video! People have criticized the remake for "making" freddy a child molester and i try to tell them he's always been a child molester, it just wasn't as overt in the original series.
@spooniejusticewarrior As a lifelong, dedicated Fred Head here's my opinion.

My dad was watching halloween and it was kinda cheesy but great
I always love how much research you do for these! Thank you.
Interesting - I didn't know that there were supposed to be kids 6 years before Nancy and co.
I'm sure Glen had the same dreams as Nancy, Rod, and Tina that first night. He gave "a look" when Nancy and Tina were talking at Tina's house.
yes at the beginning when Tina is telling them about her dreams, Nancy, Glenn and Rod make comments implying they all had the same dream.
And it works just like u said for the good ones too
Grandma..lol not gmaiķ
Yea Freddy was scary but growing up in a black neighborhood a name that had everyone sacred was Candy Man 😨😳
@@kobesystemyourwelcome8817 oooh man I didn’t run into that film til about high school and I can easily say that would of caused some nightmares lol

Ya but unlike Freddy if you don't believe in Jason or Michael they will still slice you to bits and pices unlike Freddy who would just go away.

Honestly one of my favorite series on youtube, never disappoints.

@@GlitchyHalo very which is why he implants them into his movies or something in the mist of since having that religious background he uses them in his movies. Something symbolic most of the time
Speaking of waking dreams, has anybody else experienced Exploding Head Syndrome?
It happened to me 3 times as well. The first when I was 13. I thought I was shot in the head
May I ask what was the connection? Like I’m really genuinely curious 😭⁉️
I’m a huge Freddy fan and I have to say, I knew almost everything in this video. The main things I didn’t pick up on were headlines and the like but well done 👏🏽 Your research is top notch. Off to watch the Pennywise video now, please keep it up.

I LOVE the falling in reverse references!! Anyone else catch it??
i've had the luck to meet Robert Englund a couple of years ago and He autographed my dvd movie collection of nightmare on Elm street case, very humble guy. when i told him that i saw the first NOES movie when i was 10 (1991) He was impressed and said : did you parents let you watch my movies at that age? and then He just Laughed. thank you for another fantastic video man !!
I went to see Freddy's Dead with my dad when I was so I'm guessing I was bit younger when I saw the rest of them lol.
I'd love to meet him, he seems like such a genuinely chill dude
I appreciate you and the team CZ. Absolute mad lads releasing a one and a half hour video.
Also, I've also had the "Enter the fictional world" thing. I've even had times where I used it to try to get out of a nightmare or something by running to an arcade machine/tv screen and trying to turn it on to go wherever it had instead.
Your editing never ceases to amaze me, incredible
Emo baby-stroller 😎😎😎
Speaking of changing rules, in France, we have a joke that goes, 'Tait-toi, c'est magique' ('Shut up, it's magical'). Personally, I think the 80s slashers (which I adore) didn't necessarily aim to be 'very' coherent. They were mainly designed for fun. It's quite evident in the documentary 'Never Sleep Again.
And as Lucy Lawless said (playing herself) in _Simpsons_ : _Whenever you find yourself asking something like that, remember: a wizard did it._
I think that's what makes these videos fun. Trying to make sense of something that doesn't make sense.
@@CZsWorldyour gross
@@CZsWorld oh yes I agree.
I'm really glad I stumbled upon your channel. I love this video!
The work you put into the horror history videos must be insane! Incredibly well done. Thank you. I'm hoping one day we might see a Warwick Davis Leprechaun horror history
I love the production value dude.
Thanks man, half this shit you just forget when you get old but then dudes like you keep it alive.
Ya know what. Edit: Holy shit you go into the goddamn jason x freddy you legend.
The amount of work you put in really shows!
jason only has fear in the nightmare due to previous drowning
It’s worth noting that prior to Freddy taking over Jesse’s body in the locker room, the coach seemed to be pulling stuff off the shelf as if he had dubious plans for Jesse of his own.
Keep up the grind!! I watch a lot horror videos and this is the 1st time I've watched yours. You just got a new subscriber!! This is terrific. I'm 44yrs old and love the classic horror films. I remember when I saw the 2nd A.N.O.E.S. I never wanted to be the last kid on the school bus lol.
Finally! Someone doing Freddy's story right! The insanity of how he came to be is what makes him the ultimate TRUE horror villain!
Extremely well researched, entertaining & thoughtful!
@sentientbeingslove Have you seen Dylan's New Nightmare which is a fan film sequel to the 1994 Wes Craven's New Nightmare. The fan film brings back Miko Hughes as Dylan. It is available to watch here on TH-cam for free. 🎩🧤🧣🎥
love on the spectrum, specifically the speed dating episodes, when they find a person it’s just wholesome, but man when they do some of these mini “dates” it gets rough lol
Robert England is criminally under-rated! ❤❤❤
How so? 🤨 He's exactly as beloved as he should be. So are Doug Bradley, Brad Douriff, and Tony Todd. They may not get much attention outside of the horror community, but those in it love them. Even Kane Hodder gets love. Warwick Davis is probably the most overlooked horror icon.
NO THA FUCK HE ISN'T STOP SAYING WORDS YOU DON'T KNOW THE MEANING TO YOU FUCKING IDIOT
@@I.____.....__...__Warwick Davis was a star before he entered the world of Horror though. If anything Leprechaun is one of his least important roles. To many he'll always be Leprechaun, to call him overlooked or underrated is just weird
I've never heard of SUNDS before, so that was wild to learn about. And to learn that was the initial inspiration for Wes was interesting. I always love hearing about how/where some of these guys get these ideas. One of the reasons why I love these videos, not only are they well edited and very entertaining, but I almost always learn something new about the behind the scenes of some of my favorite movies. I never comment on things but I wanted to express my gratitude. Thank you CZ and team for the badass content!
And Freddy’s appearance was based off a homeless guy that scared Wes as a kid New Nightmare Freddy was said to be closest to the actual homeless guy cuz of the trenchcoat I guess
And Freddy’s name came from a bully Wes had in school named Fred Krueger
Wow, this is seriously one of your best videos. And who would have known that it would have been on a mainstream horror icon.
I loved the part where Freddy said "it's Freddin Time" then proceeded to Fred all over the place
Classic
They're still trying to clean off the Fred...
You stay out of my head little girl!
hypnogogic and hypnopompic (gogic falling asleep, pompic waking up) honestly suck, and can absolutely used in horror in amazing ways, in my experience its like dipping into another reality for a time, knowing your stuck, I've delt with both for years and the impending sense of dread always scares me
I'm sorry. 😭
This was amazing, thank you for the time you put into this. It was very informative, you obviously did your extensive research. I like how you added things about yourself into this. Great job!
I don't know how I missed whatever month/year you broke the million mark, but good god, well deserved.
The falling in reverse reference got me
YES YES YES!
This video is honestly incredible, well done Zach!❤
Also now that you've covered both Freddy and Michael, now you just need to cover Jason to complete the royal horror three! Although with how messy that series is I understand why you wouldn't cover him!😂
Yes!! Freddy is my favorite horror movie villain. Although I know his story, you are always so detailed. I’m interested to find out if there’s anything I missed.
Freddy is the best, I hope he lives forever. & I think we might be getting a new film soon! Finally lol. have a nice day, fellow fred-head

Wasn't expecting it at all 😂

I love how in part 5, the cemetery shot, all of Freddy's victims are buried next to one another..like the families thought it was a good idea. Lol.
Freddy getting whacked with the metal pipe falling sound effect gave me unprecedented amounts of dopamine. Great video man!🤘🏻
This was an awesome video !! I’m so glad that you went back to cover New Nightmare because it’s the best movie in the franchise outside of the original. It managed to find a way to make the previously terrible movies worth while, using all of those previous movies to create one of the best versions of the character. Great work per always, excited for your next upload !
This added so much more lore to Nightmare… The writers definitely didn’t intend on any of this 😂
Lol why you say that, you don’t think so?
Please do hell raiser
The amount of effort on your videos is amazing!
