First time hearing Karen's solo material - this song captures a side of her voice I'd never heard. Very sad to lose her so young - it would have been wonderful to hear her continue to develop as an artist.
Great song. Peppy and cheerful and shows another side of Karen's amazing versatility and beautiful voice. Also love her playful attitude in the clips and they suit the song so well. Thank you for uploading indigo2302. Excellent job.
I thought I would never fall in love again; then I realized I fell in love with Karen Carpenter. Her art reaches the highest degree so naturally one cannot evaluate, just feel her adorable voice...
Karen sounds great! I Love the photos and these are all of my favorite videos of Karen! Wow! Smiling ear to ear! Thank You so much for doing this and posting it! Karen we are still and always will be in LOVE with YOU! Miss you dearly! Thank You Karen for so much!
...I like the higher range and happier material. Just what was needed to move her/their careers. Karen wanted a change; no sad ballads but a new and different approach to their sound. Love it.
Recording studios and the people in charge are notorious for turning down music that goes on to be hit records at other studios. Based on the strength if this song (which sounds contemporary even in 2023), they should have given the record a chance -- or at the very least, tweaked it a bit. It was a mistake to totally shelve the project.
Some may have doubts that Karen Carpenters had the sweetest, harmonic and most wonderful voice in the world, my one day of my life is not the same if I do not listen to one of her adorable songs, you only lived 32 years and when I listen to your songs my feelings fly!!!
GREAT video, love the pictures to this great song from the greatest - drummer, singer with the voice of an angel... she was ahead of her time, & her potential wasnt' realized... some people are so afraid of losing they do just that when they think they let the caged bird sing...so we all lose in the end...
Nobody ever could get near KC's ability to interpret a song. . and nobody approached that extraordinarily beautiful voice but I''m afraid this could almost be anybody.
Two days before her death Karen said to Phil Ramone "The album is fucking good". I think the album must be renamed, is not the solo album, is The Fucking Good Album. You're right, beautiful Karen.
@@oneovernever Thanks for your reply. I thought the guy was John Denver because I'd seen John Denver in duet with Karen Carpenter in a video available on TH-cam entitled "Karen Carpenter/John Denver Duet TV Special 1976."
You know after reading thousands of comments on you tube, I'm really amazed at how little people really know about the Carpenters, but when you read alot of crap people write they try to convince you, that this is the way it was. The truth is unless you knew Karen, Richard, the band, or anyone in the posse you don't know. Richard knew that people would try to paint him as the bad guy. But let everyone in on a secret don't believe everything you hear, or read. He does so much good for the world!
As Karen told me (April / May 1979), "Because Richard is the businessman, Richard tries to keep up a public image of being mean and ruthless even to his own family. Richard feels the image helps him make better deals than if other people saw him as being caring and such. I go along with it, but I know the real Richard has a heart of gold and it's tough for me sometimes to read stuff written about him because the Richard I know doesn't have a mean bone in his body."
@@all.about.cheonan I lived in the same area as her step cousin Wendy and I used to take piano lessons with her cousin Patti on her dad's side. I live about an hour from Wellsville NY where the Lynn family was located (dad's mom side of the family, George Carpenter married Nellie [Lynn] Carpenter). Karen kind of skipped off for a bit between September 1978 and June 1979 and then again from June 12 to 21, 1981. I knew Karen really well. I was one of many she called on February 3, 1983.
It took a few seconds to get into the groove of this, and it is unlike her "group" recordings, but as I listened, I found myself really enjoying this. I guess I'm just a Karen C. fan!
Admittedly, a few of the songs on her solo album were underwhelming -- more the fault of the song than the singer, but this one sounds like it was ready made for radio. Shame it was never released as a single.
I just love the comments on how she should or shouldn't have sung a particular song. This is Karen at her best. Doing what she loved. 30 years later and still the judgments and inappropriate comments.
If this song had been released as a single -- I think it would have been a hit -- and her album would have sold well -- maybe even better than the Carpenters Passage and Made in America.
@oakwoodx88 letting her drum. Her image of herself? A lot stronger than many have thought. She knew very well how good she was. People tend to forget that it was Karen who did most of the talking, who had the social skills which Richard lacked. Her mother even called her the strong one in the family. I think that they were both naive about the business and remained so. Managers and executives manipulated them both. The things that Richard and Karen let happen to them are stunning.
Karen came up with a new word, "buddaho", on this song. Rod Temperton had someone call Karen up in 1979 and pretend to be from Merriam Webster and asked Karen what buddaho meant for the new dictionary. I told Karen to say, "It means the same as mannahay and for mannahay see buddaho." Karen figured out it was Rod behind the call, but I can't remember who actually called. Nice video clips. Karen always liked being thought of as 'the girl next door' and we enjoyed meeting people that didn't know who she was and just talking. For about a week in mid June 1981, Karen and I had a bunch of kids at a high school that thought Karen was a 19 year old exchange student and I was her fiancé, Smart Aleck (we actually used the other 3 letter word for aleck that begins with an a too). Karen was always a down to earth person.
I was astounded when I heard the solo album how outstanding it was. I never bought the argument it would not have been successful, it was not strong, it was inferior to her Carpenters work I think, unquestionably, the problem was the impact the album--success or not--would have on the flow of the Carpenters' recordings and the public's feeling for Richard and Karen as a precious unit. It's why Diana Ross solos were not released when she was leading the Supremes, thought it was considered.
Karen Carpenter was an inspiration to me my father knew both Karen and Richard Carpenter well um company I got to know Karen through letters and pictures and she's the best person I've ever had she's like a sister to me May the Carpenters songs and emotions that I'm forever in the spirit of Karen will never miss her to always be in our hearts for life
@oakwoodx88 After reading "Little Girl Blue," it's very clear that Karen was extremely driven and ambitious. She practiced the drums for hours on end, and spent time at her friends' house learning everything that she could about grips, rhythm, timing and so forth. Nobody pushed her to do this; she did it on her own. She was also a dancer and an artist, a scholarship winner (which she had to give up.) They were both ambitious. Karen was not that shy: she's the one who pushed her teacher into
Some people are commenting that this was sung in too high a vocal range for Karen. And, it's true that Richard always told her in their arrangements that "The money is in the basement". However, Karen had an amazingly wide vocal range that few people in history have had. Check out this video demonstrating her range: th-cam.com/video/NFoVRNTqaSY/w-d-xo.html
@arfies "All Because of You" also sounds very modern, like it could be used in a movie soundtrack. I hope someone discovers these tracks someday... buried treasure indeed.
My wandering soul, how it aimlessly dwells Among darkened hills, amidst its unseen spells, And in the distance all that I hear: the summoning of bells. Far above me, the high boughs they are bending, The once hidden moon now slowly ascending And as it sings to the world its sleep song, I sit in its shadow and await my ending.
Why was this shelved?!! (actually, I know why. It was a rhetorical question). Karen's vocals may not be quite as strong here due to the anorexia (if she had still been able to belt it like "And When I Die" with her college choir, WOW!) but it's still a very cool song, and the guitar work is awesome. I bet if a modern band covered this, it would be a hit. "Poor song choices on Karen's part?" I think not. She was just ahead of her time.
THE VOICE....THE DRUMMER....THE LEGACY!
First time hearing Karen's solo material - this song captures a side of her voice I'd never heard. Very sad to lose her so young - it would have been wonderful to hear her continue to develop as an artist.
I took her passing away really hard Like a family member or close friend I know today is her would be 74th birthday We love you Karen

I just bought the last available CD of this album on Amazon...WINNER!!!!
This isn't from Love Lines? Or is it an extra on the CD version?

Whaaaat?! I’ve never seen this. What a freaking trip.
What a way to open the 80s. Awesome.
This sounds like it might have been a hit song in 1980 had it been released .. we'll never know. Great tune though. What a great talent Karen was.
I always felt KC had a future in TV and film....she passed too soon we will never know

You're talking about the sequence at 0:38, right? I didn't think it was Paul Williams but John Denver. Am I wrong?
