    I remember when I was just 20 yrs old, spending a beautiful Sunday afternoon sitting in the grass on a hill at the Garden state arts center in NJ. Was with my best friend we saw the Carpenters for the first time. That was when I knew Karen Carpenter was an excellent singer and my favorite. Today, I am 73 yrs old, still have my best friend, and we both love the Carpenters.

    When I heard over the radio that Karen Carpenter collapsed in her closet while getting dressed. My Mom and me were making cookies and heard mins later that she passed away on the way to the hospital. She had a beautiful voice that will always be remembered for her perfect pitch voice.

    As a kid my siblings and I would go over to the Carpenters house, we lived pretty close. When you walked in the front door to the right, down a couple of stairs was where they made their music my siblings would go down there with Richard and Harold BUT to the left was the kitchen, that’s where I usually went with Agnes and Karen. They always made me the best peanut butter and jelly sandwich. They always made time for people. They were pretty awesome.

    • @matthewdarnell3535
      @matthewdarnell3535 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Did you know that Karen had that voice? I’m assuming you and Karen were pretty young. She touched soooo many people with that voice. Also was Agnes portrayed correctly in this movie? I always felt bad for her.

    • @pamcrampton8050
      @pamcrampton8050 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@matthewdarnell3535 Hi, yes both Karen and Richard would sing sometimes at the house, not an entire song, just a few words then they would just smile. Their mother Agnes was a bit more dominant than her husband Harold (but in the 70’s most women took control of the household) I can’t recall a time that any of them were rude to us or each other. But I can say this, after Agnes made my peanut butter and jelly sandwich, Karen would bring it over to me as I was sitting at the table. Karen would sit next to me and gently slide my sandwich over with a big smile. There was something about Karen that made me feel welcomed. She had this charisma about her that just (I’m trying to find the words) she was just a really down to earth lady, who showed interest in our conversations no matter how small or big.

      Agnes came from a different generation with antiquated ideas about parenting. My parents never said “I love you”. They believed that nurturing = spoiling. I don’t think they had any clue how damaging that is. Fom what I have read, Agnes was solicitous toward Richard while treating Karen as second best. (Or perhaps that’s how Karen perceived it?)
      The same was true with my parents. My brother could do no wrong. We all carry scars from childhood; how I wish Karen had realized she was loved by so many people. But eating disorders are about control, which Karen must have felt was missing in her life.

    As one who looks fir valudation from my own mother and never get it i relate to her story so much. I too have a brother who was glorified by her while anything i did was past over.
    Karen only wanted to be loved and validated by her own mother so so desparately.
    She even looked for richards approval she was so proud of him.
    Fame was a constant pressure cooker in her life. At the height of the carpenters career they were barely home at all being on the road and excausted. Richard developed an addiction to qualudes and karen became so obsessed with her weight as thats the only thing she could control.
    Her life was sp tragic and it makes me cry to see how such a woman with brilliant talents ended up dead on her floor a little over 30.
    There will never be another singer like karen, she had a natural gift to sing with such emotional fortitude without being over the top.
    And fir me no other singer matches that ability except maybe phyllis hyman whose low tone notes were just as captivating as karens.
    I swear karens lows just floor me.

      Yes but is that journalist REALLY at fault for Karen developing an eating disorder? I totally understand what you’re saying about words being powerful, but you make your own choices in life.
      At any point, she could have chosen to seek help to deal with her eating disorder, but for whatever reason just couldn’t quite get it together.

    There will never ever be another Karen Carpenter 😢 I absolutely blame that selfish Mother that had no compassion showed no Love to Karen. A girl needs the love of her Mother. I read where she favored Richard. She made her get married even tho at the last minute Karen changed her mind and didn’t want to marry. She was cruel. All Karen wanted was to be Loved. I could write more but it was the Mothers fault that Karen did this to herself. I know from experience.

      Richard has claimed the film overplays their family's issues for dramatic effect, hence he dislikes it so much besides being an invasion of privacy, but by all other accounts it was *very* much toned *down* not up. What we see here is even the _fifth_ draft of the script, finished by a second writer. The first writer quit after being asked to re-re-re-re-edit it! That's how much it was toned down, with the family breathing down the writers' necks.
      When that original writer was first hired, he was invited to the Carpenters' family home to start his research, and he'd barely got out of the car thqt first visit when Agnes (the mother) came tearing across the driveway screaming at him "I did _not_ kill my daughter!" Perfectly normal behavior for an innocent person with nothing on their conscience, of course.

    Karen Carpenter could have gotten support from her family and friends she was an excellent drummer and singer and nobody understood and nobody wanted to know that she had problems with her weight and a major eating disorder and she died of cadiac arrest and she was so young when she died. The Carpenters were huge back in the 70's and early 80s I like the song On Top Of The World and Close To You Karen Carpenter had a beautiful voice and she wasn't ugly she made herself ugly by wasting food and not eating.. so sad what happened to her everyone knew that she had an eating disorder she needed help.

    of course Richard was indeed inspired and talented. But a voice is a gift from God. Millions of people sing but Karen Carpenter had a very special voice. Personally I find her voice incredibly soothing and warm . Perhaps because she was also a drummer this added a certain rhythmic precision to her phrasing and vibrato. ❤I’ve only known a very few people who had a true gift for anything and of those few it didn’t always bring them happiness.

    It is so tragic that Karen passed on from emotional issues that became the vile insidious affliction of anorexia.
    It can start being about weight, but it has nothing to do with this....not after a while. The affliction literally 'changes' your brain. You are unable to see how starved you look, how you are destroying your body, you even cease to become hungry. I know....because I suffered from it. I had never been heavy, but my friends all were obsessed with weight so I dieted too. As I got more slender, everyone complimented me....something I seldom to never got from them. I had always been shy & socially-awkward from bullying.....so I could not see these people were not likely true friends. Suddenly my parents' fighting escalated into a pending divorce, I was crushed. College began & I had no idea how to handle it....having come from a small, ill-run high school.
    Weight began to become the only thing I could control. No one noticed how thin I was becoming, not even me. I stopped being hungry, I often lived on a bagel & black coffee most days. I was exhausted constantly, my hair began to thin. Yet I couldn't see it. Anorexia CHANGES YOUR BRAIN.....you literally cannot see how emaciated you are becoming.
    I believe God let me 'see myself' one day, getting out of the shower.....I saw what I could not see before...my ribs sticking out, my breasts gone, my hair thinned.
    I literally said out loud, almost in tears: "What are you doing to yourself?!!"
    I vowed to get healthy....it took WEEKS to even feel hungry again, to eat without feeling nauseous. I fought the battle alone, I told no one. I became healthy, at last. It took time.
    But I tell anyone who will listen: If you're suffering with anorexia or bulimia, please know it can be all right. Your brain CAN heal. God bless.
