Physical Therapy Exercises for Relieving Gas After Hysterectomy

  • Relieve gas pain after hysterectomy and promote your hysterectomy recovery with these safe, gentle exercises presented by Physiotherapist Michelle from www.pelvicexercises.com.au. Hysterectomy gas pain exercises suitable for most women suffering gas pain (wind pain) after abdominal, vaginal or laparoscoscopic hysterectomy.
    This video guides you through 7 simple exercises for your hysterectomy recovery. These gas pain exercises are performed in bed and standing upright.
    7 Physiotherapy Hysterectomy Recovery Exercises
    1. Lumbar Rotations
    • Lying down knees bent and feet flat supported on the mattress
    • Rotate your knees from one side of your body to the other
    • Keep the rotation action small range and avoid twisting through your trunk
    2. Pelvic Tilts
    • Start lying down with your knees bent and feet flat on the mattress
    • Gently flatten the curve of your lower back towards the mattress
    • Return to your starting position and repeat
    3. Heel Slides
    • Lying down on your back with both legs extended
    • Slide one heel along the mattress towards your buttock
    • Extend the same leg by sliding your heel away from your buttock
    4. Abdominal Massage
    • Lying on your side or on your back with your knees bent
    • Gently massage your upper abdomen (above your navel) in a clockwise direction
    5. Pelvic Rocking
    • Lean against a window sill or back of a chair
    • Gently rock your hips from one side to another
    6. Hip Rotation
    • Lean against a window sill or the high back of a chair
    • Rotate your hips as if using a hula hoop in one direction and in the other direction
    7. Walking
    Walk at intervals throughout the day to shift gas and promote bowel movement.
    How Often to do Hysterectomy Recovery Exercises?
    These exercises for hysterectomy gas pain can be performed at intervals though out the day. You may like to do a few of these exercises to prevent or shift gas after hysterectomy.
    The standing exercises can usually be performed when you feel comfortable standing without assistance. You may choose to do a few of these exercises every couple of hours.
    Tips for Safe Exercises After Hysterectomy
    • Supporting your abdomen with a cushion or small pillow can help you move with less discomfort.
    • Move slowly and gently during these exercises.
    • Breath regularly and avoid holding your breath during your exercises.
    • Cease any exercise that causes any physical discomfort.
    • Repeat the number of gas pain exercises that feels comfortable for your body.
    • Keep a chair close by should you need to sit down quickly during standing exercises and walking.

    Had surgery Friday, 2 days ago. Suffered with the inability to release gas for 36hrs. I did these exercises (about once an hour). Walked as much as I could and drank peppermint and chamomile tea. It took time.

      Hey sis. How long after the hysterectomy did you start experiencing this symptom. Cause I'm having some pain in my upper stomach above my navel and when I burp it does feel better but it's so uncomfortable

    Oh my gosh! Gas has been the biggest problem in the 5 days since my hysterectomy. Thank you for this! And I just saw a video about walking and belly fat that I’ll be watching next. I’ll be dealing with chemo soon so any exercises will be a great help! I very much want to keep my energy up!❤

    I was having a stingy feeling pain really hard for like 2 hour already, whenever I took a breath or moved, tried giving me soft to even hard hits to my right abdominal side which helped me before but this time it didnt want to go away, tried using heat pads, hot tea and nothing, but this.. this was so effective that I laughted from happiness thanks a lot

    Thank you so much. I'm lying in bed trying these exercises now. This has pain has been extremely painful and almost unbearable, literally starting minutes after anything I eat, even foods that normally aren't known for causing gas. This too shall pass, no pun intended, lol 😂

      After gas passed I felt like a new bubble developed elsewhere but it was relieved on that side at least. I feel like my kidneys about to fall out.. I was warned about the gas though…
