    The ending was meant to be ambiguous in the original, to force the reader to grapple with the implications.
    _If_ Batman killed the Joker, then in the end the Joker was right, and the Joker won.
    _If_ Batman didn't kill the Joker, then they are doomed to repeat this same song and dance over and over, their co-dependant lunacy a vortex of misery that sucks in everyone close to them.
    Both are simply too stubborn to quit or accept help at this point, that's the punchline of the final joke: Batman can't help the Joker, he's just as crazy as him.

      yeah and its even worse because neither wants to be who they are, bruce would rather be normal person and still have his family, and this comic(and movie) showed us that the joker doesn't want to be who he is but is too far gone to change. DC at its best imo.

      No. The ending never was meant to be ambiguous, it's just that people are dumb.

    • @UrSammich
      @UrSammich 3 ปีที่แล้ว +135

      @@CallOfEuropeanSpirit People aren't dumb. It was left to be a mystery on purpose as to if Batman killed him or not. Most people assume based on where Bruce's hands are placed he choked him to death, specially when considering the laugh continues without Joker following. However, in the comic you couldn't really tell and was left purposely up to speculations. Hence the "did he or didn't he?". We never got a follow up after Killing Joke or least to my knowledge. Even if we did, the ending to Killing Joke was done so well it'd just ruin it more then likely. If you wanted to, you could argue the follow up being in The Three Jokers.
      I think with Killing Joke it was meant to show readers the parallel's between both characters and how they are forever in a cat and mouse game until one eventually gives up or one eventually snaps. Bruce needs Joker as much as Joker needs Batman. Both can't co-exist without the other and has been shown time and time again what happens when one or the other is gone. Hence the joke.

      @@UrSammich Uh, no. If you read Alan Moore's original script, he never intended that. Or if you knew anything about the behind the scenes, you would know nothing is "vague" you're interpreting it as such for whatever reason, which is fine. The follow-up to the Killing Joke WAS the continuity, because it was already supposed to be in DC's main universe. Batman continues to fight crime, the Joker goes back to Arkham and Barbera became Oracle.

      In short, I think the artsyle is the reason why joker does'nt look as good. But for me, I think it's good they did this. Imagine them making this with all the shadows like the comics. I would keep being suspicious about the joker assuming he might do something. I would'nt be able to think of him as a human, which the makers wanted to show in this scene, I'd be thinking of him as a suspicious mentally unstable villain that might suddenly just run and start massacreing people.

    It's weird, The Killing Joke is an inherently cinematic comic book.
    You'll notice when it cuts from the present to the Joker's 'Origin,' it cuts using the same imagery that exist in both, such as the Joker's reflecting in the water, a hand reaching out.
    And yet they never use that in the movie. There were many great cuts waiting for them and they didn't take it for whatever reason.

    I love how the joke works, you can think of Batman as the first man or the second. If he is the first, he wants to bring joker out of the darkness into the light but the joker is scared, so Batman offers his shallow offer of help, which in the joke is the flash light beam. We know you can’t walk on light just like we know joker can’t be saved. But both of them think it would be possible to walk on the light, which in Batman and jokers case, they think they could save joker. But joker doesn’t do it, not cuz he thinks he can’t walk on the light, but because he doesn’t trust Batman. Now we can think of this the other way joker is number 1 guy. He jumped past the light into the dark and he is telling Batman to join him, but Batman is scared to go into the darkness, because he is afraid of what he might become. So joker in the joke says he will flash light and Batman can walk on it which shows joker shallow offer of killing him. We know(or at least think, it’s still up to debat) Batman won’t kill joker. They both think it is possible but Batman thinks joker might be tricking him or something like that. So he doesn’t take his offer(or does he?)

    To be honest : it all makes sense to me now. Batman is the 1st jumper and the joker is the 2nd jumper.
    Batman want to think her can help joker, but joker knows its futile, for his one bad day gave him a lifetime of misery and insanity. Batman (the 1st jumper: offers a helping hand to other guy,trying to set him free of his pain . While the joker(2nd jumper: knows that it's fruitless, and how off into the DEEP END HE Really IS IN. Think about the joke, ONE: he isn't confident enough to think he can change and be someone better. TWO: how sane is a person who thinks that his friend would cut off the FLASHLIGHT BRIDGE making him fall to his death?
    Joker know that he is gone off deep end, and Batman kinda pick up on it, especially in the scene, where Batman offers a type truce to the fake joker. He(Batman) gave off that last warning shot ( ESPECIALLY AFTER YOU KNOW THAT JOKER KILLED JASON TODD BEFORE THIS INCIDENT WITH BARBARA, HOW MANY WARNING SHOTS DOES ONE GUY NEED?) Batman tried talking to joker, but in the end both know how far gone joker really is

      I've been thinking recently how it was the other way around. Let's imagine Batman is the 2nd Jumper, while Joker is the 1st.
      Both of them are trapped in this asylum, and it's bad enough that they both want out. Obviously, Batman has had a particularly rough day, on top of a normally bad life, so anything to make it better would be great; but for Joker, the asylum, the idea of trying to return to reality, it's not what he wants, either. He doesn't want to be normal, he wants to be free.
      The 1st jumper is, much like the Joker, someone who finds crossing over is simple. It's just one leap away, just "one bad day" from happening. The 2nd jumper is terrified of falling, though; he's afraid of falling into the gap, the abyss that leads to nothing. That's Batman: he won't allow himself to fall, to join Joker's batch of madness. He even admits to the horror of facing the abyss, where nothing matters, hope is gone and madness is so close. Madness which, from Joker's monologue on memories, is freedom from reality - from the pain and hardship that it burdens everyone with, how it keeps building until people are "one bad day" away...
      So Joker, as the 1st Jumper, offers Batman a way to cross over to madness, to not have to fall into the abyss while crossing over. But Batman, the 2nd jumper, is refusing. Not because the idea of crossing over light is impossible, no. The 2nd jumper doesn't question the logic of crossing the light; he just thinks the guy will double-cross him when he does. But that's mad; the both of them broke out together. Much like the second jumper, Batman doesn't argue with Joker's logic; he just believes Joker couldn't be trusted, even if he were to go down the path of madness together... but how illogical does that sound? That after all the Joker does to try and push Batman to madness, he would end up back-stabbing him before he reached it? You would have to be... mad.
      And that's why Batman laughs. No matter which jumper he is - whether he's the 1st offering the light to the 2nd, or the 2nd refusing to trust the 1st - he's still insane. Joker is right, no matter which side you pick.

      You're correct. Joker was trying to show that everyone is only a hairs breadth away from being just like him. Batman needed to prove to him that he was wrong. Hence why he says "I'm doing this by the book." Killing the Joker would be completely antithetical to that. It would be proving Joker right, that all it takes is a little push to make someone just like him, and Batman NEEDS to prove him wrong. This is why he actually tried to help him instead of just beating him up and throwing him into Arkham.

    I think the point of the joke is, two things:
    1. Two Asylum Escapees, Batman and The Joker - so Joker is acknowledging that they are both crazy.
    2. The gap between the building is narrow, so while the first escapee is trying to help the second. The problem isn’t that he can’t physically get across, but that even though the gap is narrow, that mentally the distance is too vast for one of them bc he doesn’t trust the first escapee to help him all the way through. Batman doesn’t see Joker as Crazy but Joker is saying he’s already too crazy, bc while for Batman the gap is narrow enough to jump across, to the Joker who is way crazier, the gap is like a mile long.

    Joker's last joke was more than that. It was a metaphor for the two of them, and Batman offering Joker his "freedom" from "insanity" by offering "a light" (at the end of the tunnel?) to "walk across" and "join him."
    But the Joker is so insane, so far gone, and so beyond trusting people, that he can't believe that anyone would do anything other than play a joke on him, by cutting it off halfway across. A _cruel_ joke.
    Batman doesn't laugh initially because he gets it, and it hits hard, and heavy. But he realizes that, in the end, it's just a joke, and he was supposed to laugh. So he does.
    Because laughing is the only thing that could even remotely come close to "helping" the Joker right then.

    1) the line that separates the two of them is gone now, and they both admit that they're exactly like each other.
    2) Similar to the joke, the light that was intended to be his bridge to salvation is gone because he refused to cross it.

    • @mozi6373
      @mozi6373 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      How does that make the most thematic sense? Batman outright says he's "doing this one by the book", which would mean he's not gonna kill him, he's not gonna hurt him in any way, as he's trying to make one final appeal to Joker to change things before it is too late for both of them, as they both know that if nothing changes, the only outcome will be their mutual destruction. Joker turns it down as he feels he's too far gone for redemption, the cops pull up, and we see the beam of light in the reflection go out as any hope for an alternative outcome is lost.
      That many readers have decided to interpret it differently isn't evidence to the contrary, but rather a show that many feel Joker's immunity to death should run out as he has long since passed the point of anything less feeling "right" to the fandom. Whether or not you agree with that, that's entirely on you, and you're entitled to that view. But putting someone else down for choosing not to see things that way isn't exactly going to win you or your views any points of favor.

  • @GoombleSludge

    Wow I'm slow. I only ever saw the movie, rewatched this scene for kicks and now I get the joke. I think I was so perturbed by Batman laughing along after everything that had happened that the joke flew right over my head. The Joker's saying they're both crazy, they're the lunatics. Specifically, Batman is the one with the flashlight and Joker is the one who's _afraid of falling_ . He's afraid he'd accept Batman's help all for Batman just to abandon him halfway through and let the Joker plumet even further into madness.
    Holy crap that's deep. It's like...the Joker understands he's balls to the walls, bag of cats crazy, but he doesn't understand how to be anything else. More over, he's not sure he wants to be anything else. That's why he keeps his past optional, never the same story twice, he can't cope with the atrocities that made him who he is, the Joker is literally a shield he (the man the Joker was) uses to protect his.....I don't know, last vestige of humanity or sanity?

    I know it's left ambiguous, I personally feel like after realizing joker knows he's too far gone and just wants to have fun with it before he's gone. Batman realizes he's in the same situation, just on the opposite side of the law. The sick twist in irony was so much for him that he just felt like he needed to laugh, combine that with a dark but fitting joke from the joker perfectly fitting their situation I doubt bats could hold it in. It may seem like Batman just strangled him or joker simply stopped cackling; However my own personal belief is that mid laugh joker realized he finally did it. He finally got Batman to break character and show under all that goth drab joker had finally hit a point with Batman, which most likely stunned him into silence probably just to enjoy listening to his nemesis/best friend laugh away some of the pain he's been carrying for so long. That's why joker will always be one of the greats to me.

    Given how Joker's broken the 4th wall before, I believe he knows that should their conflict end, so would the series, and therefore so would he. the joke is a metaphor for Batman's offer. Batman is offering to rehabilitate him, and take him under his wing. The Joker provides a story of two people (Batman and The Joker) breaking out of an insane asylum, insinuating that's where they both belong. The idea of the story is that one guy makes it across (Batman), and The Joker is scared to make the jump to sanity. Batman has a flashlight to help guide The Joker to sanity, but The Joker says the guy didn't jump because he feels the one already across (batman) will stop shining the light as soon as he jumps. It's a metaphor that Batman won't really help The Joker, or aid him back to sanity, and this fear of his causes The Joker to refute his offer. Hope this helps.

      The joke is that the beam of light wouldn't let the second guy go across at all. It shows that the second guy didn't get that, and he said, "...you'll get turn it off *half way* "

    • @rickbrees3297
      @rickbrees3297 8 ปีที่แล้ว +115

      I agree except for your last point. The Joker doesn't think Batman is gonna turn off the light and not help him so to speak. It's just that he believes the beam of light is pointless, because obviously nobody can walk on light. He believes that he is far beyond saving. That's why before the joke he says "Far too late for that"

      +jenovacorporation I GET IT its that barman is the first guy and and joker is the sec. guy and so the first guy jumps (barman) and he did perfectly fine the sec.guy(joker) said he can't do it the first guy said yes you can I will flash a flash light soo you can walk over, so what its saying is that barman is ok get help he can do thing without hurting his self so barman jumps and so joker can't jump because he hurt his self with killing and he knows that he can go to jail so barman say I can help you with all this problem but joker don't believe that batman cant help so joker dont jump or walk and stay there own slides

    Just got back from watching this, I loved it! my friends seemed slightly annoyed at the sudden ending but they came around after we talked about it. Definitely one of the best Batman / Joker stories.

    As most people have realised already, Batman and joker represent the escapees that joker mention in his joke and that Batman jumped the gap and jokers too scared to join and refuses his help but notice In the last few panels of the comic it shows truck lights making a bridge of light separating Batman and joker and then light turns off after joker denies Batman’s help of rehabilitation, and saying he’s “too far gone”

    This shows the difference between joker (at least this one) and the rest of the common criminal. Most criminals are highly manipulative and would have taken that chance to either find out a secret about Batman or try to trick him. But joker is just destructive, sadistic, and most likely vengeful. There is a technique called "gaslighting" we're a manipulative person will try to convince you that your perception of reality is incorrect. They do this by drawing you into a long conversation with them and just keep denying what you "heard" or "seen" as many times as they can. They seed into your mind doubt and hope it will grow with time. I'm saying this because this shows you don't even need any reasonable stances to manipulate someone. That's how weak humans are to manipulation.

    This is and will most likely be my favourite comic book story line i ever read. I used to think the joker was overrated but when I read this I understood he wasn’t just a clown killing for the hell of it, it showed even he was tired and wanted a way out but he couldn’t do it willingly so batman had to do it

    • @mweepinator
      @mweepinator 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I normally don't complain about this kind of stuff but I feel like the way that version of Joker looks would ruin it. Can't really give an opinion on the acting part of it since that movie isn't out yet. That being said, seeing a live action version of this would be pretty sweet.

    • @lancelotray

      I dont see afleck and leto being able to execute this scene, their style of batman and joker is'not serious and realistic but rather, power and more of comic, I see Ledger and Bale styles of batman and joker doing this but Ledger died. who knows whatd happen.

    I really love this film. Never had read the graphic novel but defiantly heard of it. The ending with Batman and Joker gave me chills. Love the ambiguity of the situation. On the whole Batgirl prologue, sure it was unneeded besides making the film a full length feature and to make the audience feel more for Batgirl but the whole thing with Batgirl and Batman didn't bother me because it has been done before the DCAU before. I'm glad it didn't last there and believe it won't last in this continuity either.

    Someone made a nice pov about the asylum joke, i cant recall their user name but they explained how they percieved it as the joker jumped across the gap, into the world of insanity and batman hanging on to the sanity he has left was the one afraid to jump and the constant fight will be him risking that flash light bridge. They explained it far better. Usually people see it as batman jumping the gap and joker not trusting batman to free him which a can make sense too, just was an interesting take on the joke. And i can see that cuz one of the biggest obsessions the joker has for bats is making him realize hes crazy too, just a vigilante that tries to avoid killing.

    • @arthurgangnon3504
      @arthurgangnon3504 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is batman as jumper 1 and joker as jumper 2. Batmans offer of rehabilitation is the light between the gap, and the Joker won't take it because he won't trust Batman.

      Grant Morrisons' take on it. "That’s why it’s called 'The Killing Joke.' The Joker tells the ‘Killing Joke’ at the end, Batman reaches out and breaks his neck, and that’s why the laughter stops and the light goes out, ’cause that was the last chance at crossing that bridge. And Alan Moore wrote the ultimate Batman/Joker story - he finished it."
