Today I want to break down whether or not Abuelo Pedro could be alive! His sacrificial death took place just before Casita came to life, so maybe he's a part of the magic; what if he’s Casita? When the cracks started to come, Mirabel stared into Abuelo Pedro’s picture almost like he was trying to speak to her. And when Casita falls into ruins, Pedro’s picture falls as well which could all be pointing to the fact that Pedro’s soul lived and died within the Madrigal’s home. Could Pedro fit into any of his family’s magic or is he truly gone?

Think of how Abuela had her children and grandchildren (who had powers) working and serving ENDLESSLY for the people of their town every single day...
This is a theory that could be possiblity true. Who to say that Pedro didn't die but was given a miracle of his own? A second chance at life and his spirit became apart of the Casita, allowing him to still be with his wife and family.

I always thought that Pedro could be the yellow butterflies who guided Mirabel. That's why they left when Abuela started to accept Pedro's death at the end of the movie. But he being the Casita would be kinda...stupid? I mean Abuela's arc was all about how she had to accept Pedro's death, let go of him, and move on in order to be a better mother/grandmother (the lyrics of Dos Oruguitas are like: "two caterpillars, don't hold on too tight, you must fall apart and each of you follow your own path"). So it would be kinda bad (and kinda funny) if they never actually let go of each other lmao. His death was devasting to Abuela, but it's ok, because he didn't die, he just became a house and is alive and well, living with his family. I mean, it just lessens his sacrifice for his family. I may be one of the few who don't like this Pedro = Casita headcanon at all :/
I don't see how it lessens the sacrifice; if anything, it makes it more tragic because no one realizes the Casita is Pedro.
It could also be a 'reincarnation' sort of deal, meaning it's his spirit but not his mind that is giving the Casita its personality (in other words, it's a new individual made out of what's left of Pedro).
It's such a stupid headcanon. I think it ultimately would change the message of the story to have Pedro be Casita. Abuela is mourning his loss, if he was Casita she'd probably realize it after 50 years. If not and she just thought of the house as a sentient object the whole time it would completely undermine the sacrifice he made and it would undermine Alma being traumatized if her husband was there the whole time. I, like you, think the butterflies are the best symbolic representation of his spirit being present. (Also, the fandom gatekeepers go on the offensive when someone has LGBT headcanons because "it undermines the story," but ones like this that actively would go against the movie's story aren't given nearly as much pushback. Boggles my mind.)
@@Nightman221k thing is even if she “realized” it was him she could be denying it or it could be that she genuinely doesn’t know because he hasn’t told her or has been unable to tell her I mean when you look at it Casita quite obviously shows in good detail what happens when a family becomes so divided that it falls apart but it’s just as damaging on the father emotionally as it is on the mother and we see that the house has cracks behind a “Happy” facade in the film and males (perhaps a bit stereotypically speaking here) commonly try to hide pain correct? think of it what if Pedro saw what was happening in the film what his wife was doing (however unintended it was its still damaging) eventually those cracks will cause Pedro (if he were alive in the film) to eventually collapse similarly as shown by casita I feel as if at least a part of him lives on in the casita If not all of him (arguably further evidence is the fact that rooms seem to be consistently created for the child in question (excluding the protagonist due to reasons) traditionally speaking its usually the husband of a family who builds the home or adds onto the home I feel that it easily could be him or some part of him making the personality of the house
I also believe in this theory. Which is why i also think that the reason why casita/pedro was slowly breaking was because it was his way of teaching abuela a very harsh lesson that she is the one who was breaking the family and it wasn't mirabel's fault.
I wouldn't think of him teaching her a lesson, but that it was his "heart" breaking as a result of what was happening within those walls.

I kind of believe his sacrifice combined with Alma’s gift is what birthed Casita and the candle and everything. They both loved each other and wanted safety for their family, maybe the Casita is, in a way, like their child? A gift brought about by their immense love for each other and their family.
Personally I think when Pedro passed and became an angel he used some of his powers to create the candle and casita, but also tried to show Alma that she was being misguided by not giving Mirabel a gift and creating the cracks in casita. He did everything he could to protect the family even after he had passed away.
I like the idea of Abuelo Pedro being a guardian angel, and I think that Abuela Alma thinks that too. The majority of people in Spanish-controlled South America during the time Encanto was made in were respectable Catholics. And, on another note, I recently saw a post on Facebook that said that Encanto supports certain Christian ideas within the film. Good to know!

Many theories sound good and plausible, but Encanto took some inspiration from 'Cien años de soledad,' which has magic realism throughout. Notice how the kids of the town play with casita like it's a normal thing, and that the townsfolk view it weird that Mirabel has no gift? That's magic realism. This is a latino story in a latino setting. Having reincarnation isn't exactly too latino (miscarried babies are treated as an exception), and having Pedro live in the house takes away from the magic realism of casita itself.
I think the miracle (candle) is an answer to a prayer; casita is building representing the family bond ("a house is made of brick and stone/ but a home is made of love alone.") In this case casita is the literal house AND home. Pedro died and these are Colombians, so he's somewhere in heaven; beyond the veil in 'mas allá.' Theories of reincarnation sound too American-drawn-from-Eastern-ideologies, and Pedro living as casita weakens his sacrifice, as well as seems American (albeit usually horror movies do that).
Reincarnation is also sort of a part of old old Nordic culture, but that is also not something that would have been imported to Central and South America. Yeah the reincarnation idea doesn't fit the culture or the beliefs of those within that culture.
Curious, if Pedro's spirit did become the Casita, how come he hasn't tried to communicate with Alma then? Or at least try to tell Alma that he never left her?

I couldn’t agree more. I believe that Casita is more of an entity CREATED BY the magic of Pedro, in the somewhat similar way that Olaf, Marshmallow, and the little snowmen were created by Elsa’s magic.
A main difference, however, is that Elsa’s magic is isolated to thrive through her and her alone, especially while she lives (meaning that when she dies, her magic fades).
This is what I believe!! Abuela’s gift was the candle, Pedro’s gift was the home he left for his family to be safe. (Or vice versa)

I think the loving act of Pedro’s sacrifice created the magic. He’s an angel that guides and guards his family.
I thought that Pedro may have become Casita at first, but you made good points against it. That would be a terrible existence. Maybe he did become a guardian angel, sending the Miracle to the wife and children he was cruelly torn from too soon.
I think Pedro and Alma both created the magic, Pedro with his sacrifice and Alma with her pain, and Casita is not Pedro, but a character of it's own, more like a guardian. I think Pedro re-appears as the last butterfly before Alma and Mirabel hug
Pedro's death was the ultimate sacrifice, embedding his energy to the candle's magic. I see Casita as a product of the candle's magic, connected but separate. Love having another realm to connect with.
I think maybe Pedro's spirit might be inside Casita and he's been watching over his family and protecting them ever since he died

I still stand by the theory that Abuelo Pedro was magic himself or that a part of his soul and spirit was separated between the enchanted candle AND the Casita. Or the Casita was Pedro’s ancestors.

It is a bit too coincidental that the candle became magical less than a minute after Pedro died.
The whole casita is Mirabel's room, and had a gift of restoration.
According to Catholic tradition, Pedro qualifies for sainthood. Saints and angels have some overlap to Catholics, but they're not exactly the same. Both can grant miracles, but it's acceptable to pray to saints but not to angels. To the people of Encanto, Pedro is or should be canonized as a saint. Which is probably why the writers named him Pedro. So Pedro lives on not as a magical object or structure, but as the patron saint of Encanto. And probably also war refugees, triplets, gifted children, etc.
Yes, Casita is the symbolize of the Madrigal Family although was a major connect relate of Pedro Madrigal
Just because the family doesn't think/believe Pedro is Casita, doesn't mean that he isn't Casita. He could just keep it a secret.

Ah nice to see you cover this theory here. I definitely believe that Pedro's spirit is Casita here in my opinion. It's a sweet way to show that Pedro, even though he's no longer there physically, he lives on as Casita, watching on Alma and their family grew. Including seeing and how everyone is like. Especially what Alma goes through for the past years, affecting how she treats her family. Including Mirabel.
After watching your video; yeah Abuelo being the casita Is a stretch,but I still want Disney to make shorts of alma raising the triplets And the casita helping her!
What if the Miracle was always in Pedro's side of the family, but he maybe grown up as Orphan and / or he didn't know of the magic in his family, and he was like Mirabel the true gift, but after his deaht, he soul ( or the magic of his family ) go in the Candle, so that he's wife can care about it, until the next Candld holder better say Mirabel can take it.
I believe he is an Angel ment to protect his family and community and maybe when she dies Alma will also be given this power.
Abuela represents a mother's love to a fault in that sometimes it's conditional.
Abuelo Pedro as Casita represents a father sacrifice in that it goes unnoticed.
The only thing that drives me crazy about Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has A Glitch is why Jumba and Pleakley never told Lilo, Stitch, and Nani about Stitch never being fully charged when he was created

I have felt he truly is Casita. Super faithful to the entire family but listens to Abuela more so. Also, I have felt the actions of the house are very much paternal/grand paternal (is that a thing?).

My first thing is that Camilo has the looks of Bruno without morphing, lookat his face and hair curls. Mirabel is like Bruno as she argued with Abuela that they both love their family and how she treated them throughout the film.

I agree with you that Pedro is the angel that is looking over Alma and his family. Which is why, I think, that Pedro sacrifice to save Alma and his family became a product to Mirabel's existence. However, maybe I came in too deep that I could be wrong, I guess.

The fact that being a house is a horrible existence makes me wonder if those people who tried to hurt the family were punished by having their souls sealed within Casita.

I've been wondering about something from the movie " Oliver and Company ". By the end of the movie, did the relationship between Oliver and Georgette improve? Because in the movie, when they first met, Georgette didn't really like Oliver, even willing to get him up. Some could say she was jealous because Jenny was bonding with Oliver more than her. Could that have changed during the movie's climax, and ending? Sure, Georgette could still not like Oliver too much, but I think she would have accepted, maybe even respect, Oliver as part of the family.

If Pedro is the Casita... this reminds me of Constance Nebbercracker being the monster house but more lighthearted... actually Constance was a pretty sympathetic character too.
Yeah, if we met more light-hearted spirits that make sentient houses they would most likely be like Casita here, Friendly, who actually lets people in and out, lighthearted, who only is giving and helps out, a little bit playful, and protective of the family members and visitors who resides inside of it. Stuff like that. I also believe that Pedro is Casita because how else could Casita be sentient house if it doesn’t have a wandering spirit, but it’s just a fictional theory, an Encanto fictional theory, nothing more.
If it was intended or part of the writing of Encanto it would have leaked through in the writing of the film. Casita (I think) is actually the family’s guardian angel in magical house form. Began with Pedro’s sacrifice to protect his family & born out of Alma’s love for her family.

I think Abuelo Pedro is casita. My big indicator is the wave. The little wave from the shutters when casita came into being. It's the exact wave when Pedro and Alma first meet.

Abuelo Pedro is the Heart of the Casita as he sacrificed himself, the foundation of his Children and Wife's life, to protect those who would have been destroyed. Just like Mirabel sacrificed herself for the candle, Luisa Sacrificed the time to relax and be vulnerable, Isabella sacrificed her happiness, and Bruno sacrificed a comfortable yet hectic life in the casita to protect Mirabel. The Casita is the Heart of those who keep the magic of life alive! Mirabel's gift didn't have to be magical, she communicated, and communication is a gift in itself. If Luisa didn't let go of the surface pressure, if Isabella kept making others happy and not herself, and if Mirabel didn't do some soul searching and realize that gifts don't make the person, all of those who I listed would have been miserable and never would have expressed their pain or struggles. Look at Mirabel's dress and talents, crafting and creating, honoring her family's gifts and abilities! Families support each other!

my theory is Abuelo Pedro is still alive not in the form of the casita but maybe he survived the attack of the enemy and flee from there to find a safety and maybe started looking for Abuela and their kids but gave up looking for them because he has to old to go on hes own.
