I thought Turning Red played with the themes it explored so well. The movie is so much fun, and felt so relevant and meaningful to my own experience. But what did you think of the movie? What should the next Turning Red video be about??

How come when in media when something is passed down on maternal side to only the woman in the family like physic abilities elemental powers vampire fighting it's podsitive or should be seen as positive when something is passed down paternal side like The Simpson gene Murphy's Law or turning into a wearwolf it's always something bad
I love the movie for these reasons
1) A diverse cast
2) A female non-white main character (and female director)
The scene of Mei’s mother finding the drawings and then marching down to the Daisy Market to confront Devon was so painful to watch. I can't begin to imagine the level of embarrassment and betrayal of privacy the poor girl felt. I don't know if there are words in the English language to truly encapsulate those feelings. A lot of young adolescents draw and write out their new fantasies and crushes that they start experiencing and may not fully understand yet. They may even be afraid of them. Those drawings and writings are so personal and an outward expression of such an intimate, vulnerable and scary part of a young person’s life that having them put on blast like that could be traumatizing. I honestly was shocked.
That’s what a tiger parent does.
Yeah, my mom dad wouldn’t have ever done this, but I guarantee there are parents out there who would. I can buy it in the movie. It is still ROUGH to watch
I always understood.
When I was a teenager I didn't just draw myself with characters I drew what I saw value in:
Friendship, love, courage and honesty.
Even when my feelings became more sexual (probably a little bit later like 17 or 18) my art always reflected my values and not just smut.
Teenagers aren't stupid and they're not that naive.
I'm not saying that they never do something stupid or naive but teenagers are just persecuted for having a deeper connection to their emotions.
Turning red is an adult interpretation of what it is to be a teenager not what it is actually like to be a teenager although it's still a good movie
but in that scene you see where her anger towards mei mei starts and how she bottled it all of it up so when the ending came thats why her panda was 10 feet tall because she didnt release those emotions
Like it’d be different if Ming decided to sit down with her and talk about that aspect but instead she went crazy. Also, a lot of stuff in this movie shouldn’t really be fir little kids
I may not relate to Mei, but I have seen people like her in my teen time. Fangirling over idols, drawing/writing some weird fanfic and still manage to maintain good points in school. I wonder if their life were like this before, like Mei's. Other than that,I really appreciate this movie. Finally, some more slice of life-y story. It doesn't have to be a grand and award-winning. Just be regular movie is enough for me.

I often see Ming kaiju size red panda as a symbolism for all the stress of having being prefect and the responsibility at the temple she had to uphold, as well as her mother disapproving of Jin being her future husband. She must of developed the kaiju like form all of the bottled up hidden resentment or anger for her mothers list of perfections, like Ming's Shadow.
I'm ready for a sequel now, I really enjoyed the movie. My mother had discouraged me from watching it because a friend of hers had said it was teaching kids to rebel against their parents, but I decided to watch it anyways since I felt she could be wrong about it since she had been wrong about other movies before and I'm glad I did, I really need to talk to them about where they get their information from one of these days.

@@jazzratoon I didn't tell her I watched it yet but I did tell her I was probably gonna watch it anyways since I am usually not one to judge a movie before I watch it and I wanted to have an opinion of the movie after watching it. My parents are pretty religious so they fall into the category of people who will believe almost anything bad another person says about any form of media just because they believe in the same thing, but I've been trying to spread my wings a bit more and not become conditioned to that philosophy so I can decide for myself what is good and not good.

@@FOR3STHILLS well they didn't tell me I can't watch the movie, they just discouraged me from watching it. Plus I'm 18 now so I feel I can make my own decisions on if I should or shouldn't watch something based on little knowledge of whatever media I'm watching.
I don’t think people understand how it hits me with the relationship between an Asian mother and daughter, because my mother was super supportive but to the point she smothered me and not to mention the addition of emotionally manipulative words. But I still love her, but at the same time she is still hard to deal with. Although I do understand why she did the things she did, I hope people understand that this is parental guidance and made for tween and up or a mature mindset. Because it is rated PG…
Yes, people tend to forget what "PG" actually means. I really think the movie is best for parents who were about 13 in 2002 and have children about 13 today.
This movie did such a great job at showing true complicated emotions for both child and parent.
I loved Turning Red! it was a really fun movie to watch, Mei's friends are some of my favorite characters, Mei was so lucky to have such loyal and accepting friends that stood by her and loved her for who she was red panda or no red panda.

I’ll be honest I didn’t like it
The movie is relatable, the family part, the friendship part, every part is real and great
Of course we can't turn into some fluffy amimals but it could be something else, like your hobbies, stuff you enjoy, those that aren't 'serious' or 'legit'
A lot of people ended up hiding themselves, and abandoning themselves
But we don't have to, and I think that's part of the message
It's a great movie, I hope people don't hate it just because
I love Turning Red so much from the animated to the 2000s vibes to puberty and most of all the message of generational trauma, like Encanto
Dang, Disney has been giving us hits for the last few years dealing with familial issues and multigenerational trama.
I have to admit that I really enjoyed the movie. It was weird and really out there, and that's what I liked about it. I really enjoy when animated projects that don't shy away from family problems, teenage drama or social issues. The characters, animation and voice acting were all done very well. They did a good job of showing how scary changing and growing up can be, but it happens for a reason.
But like any other Disney movie, the problem is mostly resolved to quickly. Forgiving and moving on is important, but its not easy (like they make it seem in their movies). Ming did the exact same thing to Mei that her mother did to her - and she didn't see that? If nothing is ever going to be good enough, you shouldn't push a child to be perfect. Healing can happen...but it takes time.
(Ming shouldn't need to apologize. She may have given her mother that scar, but it was Wu's controlling and overbearing nature that caused such an act.)
People may call the portrayal of Chinese culture in this movie racist or stereotypical; but it isn't if its all fact. Most families of Asian cultures are very controlling and pass that toxic quirk to their children. Parents shouldn't push their desires onto their children, because than the children never get to live their own lives. If your kids rebel, its most likely because you're refusing to listen to them.
If there's a sequel, I seriously hope that Disney doesn't tone down the problems and issues of growing up.
When you have an hour and a half to tell a story that can span a few hours to several years there are bound to be cutouts for the narrative.
To be fair it’s not really a Disney movie it’s a Pixar movie
I wish there was a movie like Turning Red when I was growing up. Had a ton of self confidence issues and hard time in school. This is a movie all growing girls need to watch.

I personally relate a lot to Mei. All that discussion in the film about her relationship with her mom was incredibly similar (if not almost identical) to my relationship with my own mother. I have been through a hard time in the last couple of months because my mom was always very restrictive and a little bit bossy about everything in my life, and I never tried to "break" that when I was growing up. I'm now 24, and when I started asking if I could make my own choices and started being a little more independent of her, she felt betrayed and our relation started to crumble. It's a lot to say, it's very difficult to simply put my stuff here kkkkkk, but I know that everything is going to be okay. I learned a lot from this movie about what my mother passed in the past with my grandma, and I know she never made any of this to hurt me, or anyone. Of course, it's no excuse for what happened, but understanding where she "came from" is a big step to healing and to forgive as well. Sorry about that big text, it's just that this movie was very close and personal to me. Thanks for reading until here, hope it didn't bother so much xD. Have a wonderful day!

Two years ago I moved away from my hometown to be close to Disney like you... I hated the idea at first I was so mad at my parents for moving me away from the home I've always had. But I've grown to love Florida and now I have strong friendships and I'm getting into the life I've always needed! Hearing you talk about your hometown made me think of mine! And that's what I needed so thank you ❤❤
How Ming-lee didn't respect Melin (Mei-lee) being a panda I am aware this is a reference to Encanto. The expectations element within a family relationships is similar to both movies. Encanto grandma with a granddaughter relationship to a mother with a daughter relationship
This movie was a tearjerker, heart-warmer and incredibly relatable💖💖💖💖I relate to Mei alot. Personality wise and sort of journey wise.

I adored this movie, understanding Mei what it’s like to make your family proud, having weird and goofy friends and accept your fun, silly and eccentric side being proud with your true self. I also like how it tackles family relationships and how it was mold and or shatter other relationships.
It’s not Encanto but it should be praised and be given it’s flowers for something new and being a unique subversion storytelling of everyday life.💐

I personally thought it would be cool if Disney decided to make an animated TV show after the movie where Mei uses her Red Panda powers as a superhero-like persona and saves people in Toronto and maybe even encounter other supernatural beings
Yess! Please talk about Tyler, when he was revealed as a 4Towner I was just laughing from the sheer adorableness that they suddenly gave him! I really want his new friendship with Mei to be explored!
I loved watching this movie with my eldest who is going through the these changes and this movie was a fun way for us to start having these conversations I know she never wants to disappoint me but I also encourage her to yes tell her things that I sign her up for music art etc. but to also express her own individuality and now we are calling it being her own panda ❤️
The scene when Man flashbacks about all the good times she had with the panda then decides to keep it, oh man that gets me every time!
I'm gonna call it, Mei's gonna grow up to be a VTuber in the 2020s
This is one of the most relatable movies I’ve ever seen. I don’t have as over-bearing parents as Mei, but I’m an extreme perfectionist and can get extremely stressful about my work, bodily features, my likes and dislikes. This is a movie that early teens should watch, to know that these things are normal and ok.
I don’t fully relate to Mei with my mother. I have never been forced to be a perfectionist but have been constantly compared to her friend’s children. “X’s son is on the Dean’s list” “Y’s son is making a lot of money doing this” “Z’s daughter is thriving at school”. I know I’m not like other people’s kids and my mother coming to terms with that is hard on us both.
I see SO MANY PARALLELS between Encanto and Turning Red.
I think that a video discussing these parallels between the 2 movies would be awesome.
yeah but tbh, Truning Red looks like you are actually going somewhere compared to Encanto, since it takes place mostly in the house. Both are great movies and i can't decide which is better

I'm surprised the Canadian government let the lees live in peace after ming's rampage , you would think that after the stunt she pulled ,she would be in custody ,or at the very least the Canadian military would take special interest in the women of the lee family

You also need to talk about why Mings Red Panda form was SO HUGE!!!! Turning Red was one of those Pixar movies that I enjoyed but not the kinda movie I’d watch again but it was still fun to watch and I’m glad there’s a story that show’s you can embrace yourself in the most impactful way!
I love Miriam! In the classroom, a student asks 'what's with her?' or what's with the hat or something like that and Miriam, without a second thought turns really fast and says, 'what's with your face!' Such a good friend and it was so cool too.
I know that when I started middle school, I was still quite childish. I was pretty much a loner geek who was still obsessed with Pokémon, video games, cartoons, and using my imagination. But I've learned now how to put my imagination to good use by writing stories and drawing fan art. And starting a TH-cam channel of my own, which I hope will eventually do well.

I think this is a great movie to watch. Some things I didn't expect in the movie, but still I like the movie.
It’s amazing that she uses her red panda form as a marketing strategy. Plus while in human form and have her red panda body parts made her look like she was cosplaying.

I loved the message that says you don’t have to be perfect for your parents and you can be your own person while still honoring and respecting them. It’s an original message that the film executed perfectly
Something I find very important in these movies is that the family members said "hoe could she do this to you" or "Why would she do this to me." I think in all cases parents do see their kids as an extension of theselves in a way, its only logical. However kids generally dont do something to hurt their parents, which I think is an issue in so many families and cultures. That parental bond is so strong that parents do think their kids should live for the parent, so when a kids does something different they feel like its an affront to them, which is something I think the movie addresses well enough, as it doesnt have to be explicit. I didnt grow up in a family like this, but I did feel a similar pressure though it wasnt really real.
I love it when a world is so pure like that.
Here the minute one random person saw Mei in that form, in 3 days the FBI, CIA, Police and Army would lock down everything kidnap Mei and run lab experiments.
And ming is making a new kid: slavei lee notorious slave. family slave dont worry she doesn’t have any feelings. And everyone is happy forever yaaay.

I love that the animation they used! Its like a blend of American Animation and Anime.
Being someone who grew up in the early 90s a lot of it really hit home with me, the nostalgia for that early 2000s era, the kinds of music that there were and such. It's such a beautiful and powerful story in Turning Red, the stages of entering puberty or at least the start of it when you hit a certain age that the changes slowly begin to take place. I think it hit hard with me because it somewhat related to me in someway, I don't particularly remember much of it, but it wasn't always easy, and it was messy. I wasn't so much into loud music or anything, or that huge into boy bands of the sorts, some girl bands like Spice Girls, a lot of my early friends were into it, and it was such a memorable time. -- I do wish I could do it all over again, but better and make it something more memorable, maybe not quite as messy perhaps, but having better friendship relations with people I like and care about, it's not something I had a whole lot of in my life, I've had maybe like 1 or 2 at most at any given time, but for most of the time I barely had any close lasting relationships with the friends I've made. As I'm heavily introverted its always been difficult for me to have or keep many friends, as most of the time I would just be by myself playing videogames and doing whatever else I feel like doing at the time all on my own, and for the longest time I've always craved for having those kinds of true best friend relationships like Mei has in Turning Red with Abby, Priya and Miriam.
Oh I didn't have the same dynamics with my parents as Mei did at all.
But I was still deeply traumatized by a broken home and a stepparent. All in the year 2002. Seeing Mei was like seeing a classmate I could have seen in school. Or even just seeing me. If I could have seen this movie then, I would have been so happy. Even if I didn't know what periods were lol.
Part 4:
Dead Worm: worms in dreams represent negative energies in your waking life
Lightning: lightning in dreams represent a part of your life, or your entire life as you know it, is about to change
The Spirits Entering her body: spirits in dreams allows your emotions to surface and helps you confront deep fears and past issues
I wonder how this fits into the PIXAR Theory
I love this movie, it's one of Pixar's best! I like how Mei becomes comfortable with herself (in both human and red panda form) and how she and her mother start to understand each other and what they're going through.
Ending : dad vibing to 4 town
I really loved Turning Red, it was really relatable, especially with Mei having to be perfect and the struggles that come with it. Even as an adult, just failing a class in college made me feel ashamed because of how my mom would react if I got anything less than a B in school. I love that there is now a movie about the struggles of growing up and I hope that it’s something my sister will be able to look up to as well.

its great to have a movie like this that explores those themes of teenage years and puberty and growing up and finding yourself I loved all the people giving out about the flim being cringey and was it in parts of course cause thats what its like for many of us looking back at those years I dont think though you have to necessarily move out of your hometown theres many who are still in the same hometown as their parents just living in a different house its a great movie and the message of being yourself and espically taking all the good and bad along with you is good you can still have a good relationship with your parents but they need to treat you respect as well as you respecting them you are both mature people capable of making your own decisions

Ming’s dire warnings certainly had their validity in a certain sense. When she talked about the “darkness” of the Red Pandas she was referring to her own experience. After all, Ming’s panda has a level of notoriety within the family for its violent nature. And the part about overuse of the panda making it harder to let go of worked to Mei’s advantage in her journey. Over time, Mei treated the panda like an integral part of herself. So that’s what it became.

Devon Mermaid: symbolizes that in her dream "the feminine side of the dreamer - mystery, vulnerability, beauty and your secretive side" and sombody please tell me if you guys think she has fear of sex or of her own femininity
4-Town in Flowers: probably means the affection boy bands give to girls
Ancesters: seeing her dead relatives is an indication of major changes in your waking life
Broken Glasses and Pigeon: "broken glasses could indicate that a situation has shifted with a deep emotional or sentimental change at its heart" and the pigeon could probably be conected to her feelings of discontentment, failure, and hopelessness
Burning Mother Fan: this was hard, but the fact that it's burning is probably ming no longer able to go with the flow (p.s. ming was hard to spot)
this movie could come out at a perfect time. i saw myself in Mei mei i was the kid that payed attention in school and worked really hard as i grew up into myself i started to see my full potential. i been able to take a big step forward and now im on the road of living out my dream job. i was getting office jobs and doing courses in business just only to make my family proud. wasnt until this year my best friends saw how much pressure and emotion and lies i've got myself in. they help me give me the final push of taking that step forward in life and embracing my own person.

I watched this movie a couple days ago and I enjoyed it very much. I didn’t expect myself to like it this much, I was only curious when I chose this movie. But I’m very glad I got to watch it in the end.
If Mei is 13 in 2002, that means she was born in 1989.
I thought the film was set in the modern day. But seeing all of the promo, it was clear it wasn't. The only Pixar film to be set in our modern day is Soul.
She'd also be 33 in the modern day.

I thought what they were trying to say when they said you only have one chance was if we don't do the ritual immediately on the closest red moon then the panda will continue to grow and become more powerful and harder to contain because the more you unleash it the stronger it gets and the longer you wait to do the ritual the more opportunities for transforming occur
Hey Isaac ^^ I was wondering if you're going to work on a separate video theorizing how/why Ming's panda is godzilla sized compared to her sisters's and mother's.
Somewhat unrelated, but I appreciate the way they handled the pictures in the film's opening. The way the lighting and shading is done made them more resemble real family photos.

I can relate to Mei. I am a guy but I can relate. I have a secret beast inside of me and a parent who doesn’t fully accept me for who I am. But don’t you worry, I’m finding good ways to deal with it with the help of my friends.
