When my son was eleven (he’s 22 now) we had a HENRY, 22 Lever Action that the Magazine Spring Tube failed. HENRY called when I was gone, they asked my son for the Serial Number, he said the firearm is locked up and he was not allowed to handle firearms without supervision. I love Henry lever guns, this one in particular more than the rest. The ability to have a lever gun chambored in a modern full powdered spitzer round is the best combination for a hunting rifle in my opinion.
One of the advantages of a lever gun over a bolt gun, is the faster speed of follow up shots. No need to remove the rifle from your shoulder, just lever while keeping it on target and shoot. Thats the key. I have a Marlin lever gun .308 Marlin Express and it is a nice shooter with decent accuracy.
Savage made a version of this back in the day. The 99c. But they stopped making them in 2003. Mine's chambered in 308 from mid 60's. I love it. Will never get rid of it. A bit clunky when cycling but never had any major issues. This Henry looks like a sweet unit. I think its now on my ever expanding list of guns to buy. cheers
If you like leverguns (and I do) this is the ultimate rifle for all medium (whitetail) to large (moose, elk etc) game in the lower 48. Even suitable for grizzly. If you are a levergun guy this is the best "all around" hunting rifle for North America.
These things are very accurate from what I've seen. My grandpa/great uncle are Henry fanatics and they hover around/a bit over 1 MOA. Incredibly impressive out to 600-700 yards. The truth about guns has an awesome right up of one of these guys. Thanks hickok!

Don't forget about the Winchester 88 in both 308 Win. & 243 Win. This also is magazine fed. I've had one of these for 30 years. It is hammer-less. The lever actuates a front locking bolt.
Had a Winchester model 88 in .308 lever action and it was one of my favorite rifles, regardless of the type of action. It kicked like a mule but could knock down pine cones at 800 yards. I now have a Savage Axis XP bolt and it’s pretty good also but it’s not a lever gun...
The Winchester 88 is one of the most beautiful rifles ever produced, however the ones that I had and have seen were not very accurate. There are things you could do to make it more accurate.
I know this is an older video on this rifle but I bought one a few months ago and absolutely love it.. chambered In .308 it will definitely reach out there at distance with great accuracy ... thanks for all your videos!
Hey Hickok, another great video, thanks! I didn't hear you mention it, but there is no external safety on the rifle, using a transfer bar to allow loaded carry with the hammer down. This means you can carry the rifle with 4+1 rounds in relative safety. Just for anyone who may want to know.
My Long Ranger in .243 shoots an inch at 100 yds and with the Leupold CDS and bowling pins at 400 yds. Longest Coyote harvest is 310 (rangefinder). FYI for hunters, it's actually 5 rounds (4 + 1). Great video sir. Thanks.
Shot one of these at a gun range today didn’t know anything about it, looking it upper after the fact. Loved it shot 1.5 moa groups at 100 consistently. First lever action I’ve shot not much recoil.
I've heard that the action in this is essentially the same as a bolt gun. Just actuated with the lever so the accuracy should be the same or very similar. Just a little more fun because of the lever.
Not as similar as you think. I used to think was same as bolt action just different lever mechanism. Over time, and couple YT videos, learned it’s more complicated. Lever actions really can’t be as accurate as an equivalent bolt-action. A lever gun will usually be more accurate than most semi-autos though, but not by as big a margin as bolt-action.
WOW! That .308 cartridge is what my M1A1 used. Some call it M14 to differentiate from the Garand. But the M1A1 weighed 9.5 pounds so that 7 pound Henry has to have a pretty healthy kick.
Only advantage over my "Old School" Savage 99 is the detachable magazine. Other than that, same caliber, same ballistics. The 99 also has iron sights as well. So this has been around awhile.
Dang, the 308 is a underappreciated caliber in my neck of the woods, in Southwest, Virginia. Fellers around here will pump their chests out and go on about the only "real" deer calibers are the 30-06 and 270. I've actually been mocked for using 308. I silenced a few last year when I bagged a black bear, field dressed, came out to 230 pounds. Granted, not the biggest, but it proves the 308 has some bite.
Interesting. 270WIN is the caliber that gets the least respect of the three you cited in this area. Flat shooting but most local hunters gravitate to a larger diameter round, even for white-tail hunting here in the Pac NW.
Cause hillbillies around here think size matters lol When I showed my uncle my rifle and the cartridge he commented, "Well that's just puny. You'd better make sure you aim good, cause it won't do much." I'm talking old-school hunters. Who have never owned or fooled with an AR or AK. Yes, but the directive only concerns life weapons modified to fire blanks and made unable to use life ammo. These weapons for collecting purposes must be registered now like real firearms. Who cares? Nobody modifies his weapon for loads of money to make it useless, except for some heir collections I guess. I don´t bother too much, as long as they don´t touch my right to own handguns and semiauto rifles.

This is a .223/.243/.308 magazine-fed rifle you can take anywhere (including Canada) that won't get you the hassle you'd have with an AR-style rifle with a 20" barrel that will let you hunt anything in N.A. Gotta love Henry making rifles America loves!
I can see the future for this Rifle, and its good. This is the first lever action rifle I have been excited about in a Long time. Good job Henry !! If the inevitable starts to happen, with synthetic furniture, picatinny rails for red dots and flash lights, and higher cap mags, I get a 223, but for now, the 308 looks right.
I have a two custom Browning BLR’s, one in the pistol calibre 45 Win Mag using Dessert Eagle 44 magazines, and a fluted bull barrel .233 BLR using Mini 14 magazines. They have such wonderfully good triggers once worked on.
Scott Beto yes!! You are right, Scott! The traditional lever guns don't lock up as tights as a bolt! But, Winchester 1895, BLR and Long Ranger locks up as tight as a bolt gun! Modern day made lever guns are just as great as a bolt gun!
I want this in 223 or a mini 14 ...funny you mentioned it cause that's what I'm telling a dealer near me ....whatever rifle they can get me first I'll take home !
I have a Savage Model 99 takedown in 300 Savage 1937 vintage and a Marlin Model 36 ADL small c serial number so 1947 and they both are vintage great shooting machines. Get over the attitude and the Henry Long Ranger is the next thing in great shooting machines in a real action which makes this Henry Long Ranger the best thing to real shooters. Sorry that Buds did not pay you enough to promote this great shooter.
Savage 99C is the other box mag fed lever gun that is available in multiple flavors and lever actions have great accuracy as I have a savage 99c in .243 win.
A bolt is a bolt. Lever bolt, or bolt bolt. LOL I bet it shoot as good as a traditional bolt gun. The light weight is great if you like walking out in the deep outdoors. I think it's a great design.
ISN`T This a ABSOLUTE Cool Rifle or not ? !! Yessir it IS ! :-D, As a German "boy" of 54 years the American Rifles where ALWAYS on top , same goes to the "Winchester/Henry" Systems and you have SO much Knowledge about Firearms .. I Fascinated about your Channel totally ..
It's a good option if you live in a country like oz where semi autos are all but banned, and you want something big enough for pigs etc that can cycle faster than a bolt repeater.
ANOTHER NEW HENRY 22LR !! Henry also now offers it's 22LR Frontier as a LONG BARREL. It's the standard Frontier (octagon barrel, lever action) but it has a lengthy 24" barrel. The long sight radius helps with accuracy. Nicely balanced and fun. Please consider a video on it. ...Also...the National Education Association should give you a grant for all of your lessons that every American should be learning. Then again, considering the elaborate pageantry of your videos...perhaps a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.... Love your work!!!
I love mine! Got the one with irons on it (I bought it at a LGS, it was labeled the Henry Wisconsin Long Ranger?) Anyway, nice scout scope, got the irons and a diamond d cartridge holder on the stock and a leather sling. Shes pretty!
ok friend my intro to .308 was my dad's savage 99c lever action, clip magazine, as a lefty this would suit me fine as a hunting gun (.308 has taken every large game in u.s) and dont have to reach across the top of the gun to work a bolt i'm looking for one now!
I almost bought one of these but went for the Browning BLR tracker in the end. I was worried about the trigger as I heard bad things - however on the new ones the trigger isn't bad at all. They must have come under some pressure to tweak the design a bit due to this long ranger.
Its only an aberration for guys who take a bench rifle up in a tree stand with them. If you have the luxury of hunting thick hardwoods and you still hunt from the ground its invaluable. Even hunting out of a stand if you like to take hard angle shots is tough with a bench gun. You ever swung your big heavy bolt gun to your weak side and tried to hold it on that big buck for several mins till you can get a good shot? I switched to lever guns years ago because of this. The Marlin .336 did okay but was a little sketchy in areas with longer shots. I can't tell you how many times I put a shot on a big buck from the stand, waited 10 mins and started stalking towards where they dropped only to see them moving slow... its then the lever gun came in handy because its short and light and you can shoot off hand so easily with it and finish the hunt. Then I found out about the Savage model 99 (in .308), the BLR and now this. For you guys that wanna take 10-12 pound bench rifle into the hunting woods... so be it. For me I'll stick with a good lever gun and shave off about 4 pounds.
Hickock has a nice way of saying “I don’t like it, its inaccurate, its over priced, it doesn’t come with a sight, it jams, its not a traditional lever gun, it has limited capacity, I’m not a big Henry fan, but it might be good for someone shooting 50 yards or maybe longer range”. This was about the nicest review Henry could have gotten after jamming and not hitting a 2 liter bottle multiple times at 50 yards with a scope.
This rifle your shooting sir killed my first 4 point in 2004. I was 9 years old, originally shooting a .243. I was in the tree with my father, and he took this rifle along. I had a Weatherby .243. This buck was coming across the bean field about 200 yards from me hot on a doe. I got over excited and missed with the Weatherby. As my dad was getting another cartridge ready for me, I grabbed the Henry in front of me, but the cross on the white of his chest, and dropped him in his track.
Looks like a nice rifle , but my personal choice is the model 99 Savage with the box magazine , great shooter , l have even seen you shooting some Savages . NOW if someone would start re-making those , in 308, 7mm/08, & 243 , l believe they would be an instant success
+ Bear Ted E Your highly mistaken when you call a rifle a sniper rifle without knowing the ways the owner will use the rifle your labeling the rifle. The owner might not be shooting long distances with it. No rifle is sniper rifle its a rifle the owner would be a sniper. Calling a rifle a sniper rifle is one of the noobest things you can do in the firearm world (No Offence).
I only just now discovered this rifle. Been really thinking about a lever action elk gun. Been wanting it with a scope. I have an old Winchester 95 in 303 but has too much family sentimental value and history that I don’t want to take it out into the mountains much. My problem has been that I want a fairly common cartridge bigger than a 30-30 but not with the kick, scarcity, or cost of a 45-70. A 308 sounds great. Plus it has a bit of traditional lever action appearance. Not sure how I feel about not having a half cock hammer safety like the winchesters.
Jakuzure Nonon they are offering them with iron sights now like Shawn said below. Skinner sights is also making a rear peep sight for them too, if your interested.
My Dad surely fed our family by using his pre-64 Winchester .308. Deer meat was a staple on the kitchen table, not a luxury. Taught us kids well! Deer meat is a staple in my home also.
Capacity is dictated by caliber…I think the 223 version holds 5 rounds. It’s not a tactical rifle it’s a hunting rifle…last time I checked 4 rounds when deer hunting is more than adequate. That said spare mags aren’t that expensive and increase capacity with a quick reload.
I have a Long Ranger in 223/556. Absolutely love it. All the guys at the range also love it. I agree that I wish that a safety would be a great addition.
Farty McGee I have a 7600 carbine. I've had mine 14 years. I recently had to replace the o-ring that keeps the front end from rattling. Other than that it's been solid as a rock. One thing to note on the 7600 magazines is that they hold 5 rounds but will only latch on a closed bolt with 4. This allows you to completely top up the rifle to its 4+1 capacity just by loading a 5 round mag on an open bolt. Close the action and you're ready to go.
If I'm not mistaken the original Henry rifle did not have a loading port on the side of the breech. It was always my assumption that that was the reason there wasn't one on the newer models. A tip of the hat to the OG. I have a Big Boy .44 and never gave it no mind. Love that rifle.

The 243 is a great mid caliber round, great choice as well. As Hickok would say, a little more pleasant to shoot!
I am a huge fan of the 308. A huge fan of lever guns. I'm in heaven.
I love everything about this rifle, classic looks and modern everything else.
The 1895 and 1899 Savage rifles also had box magazines to shoot spitzer bullets too, sir.
I have a two custom Browning BLR’s, one in the pistol calibre 45 Win Mag using Dessert Eagle 44 magazines, and a fluted bull barrel .233 BLR using Mini 14 magazines. They have such wonderfully good triggers once worked on.
Been waiting for a good review on the Long Ranger. Thanks Hickok.
Different levers? How about the winchester model 88? The savage 99? My dad took several deer out west with his 88 in .308.
I have owned a BLR for many years. A lever action is just as accurate as a bolt. They lock in to the same tolerances.
Scott Beto yes!! You are right, Scott! The traditional lever guns don't lock up as tights as a bolt! But, Winchester 1895, BLR and Long Ranger locks up as tight as a bolt gun! Modern day made lever guns are just as great as a bolt gun!
I used to think Henry was gimmicky, now when I pick up one of there guns in a store I can't believe the quality.
call me stupid, call me uninformed, but i gasped when he pulled the magazine out. officialy in love.
My favorite Hickock vids are the ones where he's not in love with a particular firearm.
i just got one of these in .223/ 5.56 it’s the most fun gun i’ve shot next to my mini 14
Hickok, ur videos always put a smile on my face.
"It's got no muffler on it, and neither does he." haha!
That's 4 for you folks in Kentucky!!! 😂🤣😜 I love this man!!
This is REALLY going to need a Chapter 2 video!
Yeah. Id love to see him shoot this gun in iron sights, since they make them now.
Now THAT is a beautiful rifle!
Savage 99C is the other box mag fed lever gun that is available in multiple flavors and lever actions have great accuracy as I have a savage 99c in .243 win.
It's nice the Henry made a .223 version. Good to share your AR's ammo stockpile.
there is simply nothing classier than a wood furnished lever gun.
As a German "boy" of 54 years the American Rifles where ALWAYS on top , same goes to the "Winchester/Henry" Systems and you have SO much Knowledge about Firearms ..
I Fascinated about your Channel totally ..
Browning BLR was its precursor🤙🏼
It's a good option if you live in a country like oz where semi autos are all but banned, and you want something big enough for pigs etc that can cycle faster than a bolt repeater.
germany loves you hickok45
For the record and for those from Tennessee, four fingers is a common measure of Bourbon.
No muffler and neither does he lol. I was waiting for it.
".......and neither does he" As soon as he mentioned it the noise stops. I think Hickok45 is the Gun God!
im eating a steak and poutine fries while watching this.perfect!
I like lever action being left handed.
Same that's why I have a a few I got a Browning BLR years ago
Hickok for PRESIDENT😊😊😊
Would love to see Henry make one that accepts AR mags
Looks like a nice rifle , but my personal choice is the model 99 Savage with the box magazine , great shooter , l have even seen you shooting some Savages . NOW if someone would start re-making those , in 308, 7mm/08, & 243 , l believe they would be an instant success
Nice rifle.
So essentially its a lever action sniper rifle, cool.
By 19th century standards it would easily qualify as a sniper rifle, I would say with that scope it can easily hit a man sized target from 6-700yards.
Cool story...
Sniper Rifles do exist, its not just the user.

get off call of duty
I only just now discovered this rifle. Been really thinking about a lever action elk gun. Been wanting it with a scope. I have an old Winchester 95 in 303 but has too much family sentimental value and history that I don’t want to take it out into the mountains much. My problem has been that I want a fairly common cartridge bigger than a 30-30 but not with the kick, scarcity, or cost of a 45-70. A 308 sounds great. Plus it has a bit of traditional lever action appearance. Not sure how I feel about not having a half cock hammer safety like the winchesters.
I would prefer it with metallic sights, just because I think that lever guns look goofy with scopes.
Logan Waltz or by the long ranger with irons since they're available with them now
Logan Waltz or by the long ranger with irons since they're available with them now
That one will be called Iron Ranger.
I think you look goofy with your existence.
Jakuzure Nonon they are offering them with iron sights now like Shawn said below. Skinner sights is also making a rear peep sight for them too, if your interested.
I’d love for them to make a long action Long Ranger model that shoots 30-06, 7mm 08, 300 Win Mag. That sort of thing.
great video I had not heard of these. very interesting I love my lever guns. especially in 45-70
WHO_TEE_WHO I love your vids!!!
My Dad surely fed our family by using his pre-64 Winchester .308. Deer meat was a staple on the kitchen table, not a luxury. Taught us kids well! Deer meat is a staple in my home also.
My question about that rife mag combo is, do they make a mag that will hold more then 4 rounds?
SuperGoldnut yea, I like the regular rifles, I just wish the 308 in that rifle would have atleast a 10 round mag
The magazine would get in the way of the lever. The number is great for what it is meant to do.
There is an aftermarket however any extended mag would have to curve like an ak mag to keep from interfering with the lever@@tbpc1
Such a nice looking rifle and vortex optic as well, can't go wrong 👍 Cheers from Australia
Thanks for sharing Mr. Hickok... I appreciate what y'all do...
i would like one with iron sights. Yup yup. and then also one of the quick attach/remove scopes i think
That's interesting, never seen a 308 lever gun that takes a mag. Very cool hickok thanks for sharing
Savage made one. This looks like a clone.
@@dwightehowell8179 didn't know that, thanks for the info.
Have a Marlin 30-30 levergun. Looking to get this to add to my hunting rifle options.
I've had a Browning BLR, which is similar to this, for years and love it!
It would be nice to see this compared with Remington 7600 pump in 308. Both are geared for short to mid range deer hunting and come with iron sights.
Sir, I love the fact that you post it all even the mishaps and jams, Great video thanks.. I definitely want one of these chambered in . 223
@hickok45 How about a Browning BLR video?
If I'm not mistaken the original Henry rifle did not have a loading port on the side of the breech. It was always my assumption that that was the reason there wasn't one on the newer models. A tip of the hat to the OG. I have a Big Boy .44 and never gave it no mind. Love that rifle.
