    American Locks are a lot of fun. I got a good deal on 10 of them on Ebay but the only caveat was the did not come with any keys. Here is the process I went through to get them all open in the least amount of time exerting the least effort. This are really nice looking locks, and I really did not want to pick any of them because I wanted to keep them in the new condition, scuff free.

    great job. it's good that they didn't come master keyed, I've got quite a few Americans that are master keyed and it kind of kills the fun of picking them. I need get around to pulling the wafers out and either file down or have new keys cut for them, I just need to look up the bitting chart and get the calipers out and make them better locks. thanks for the video.

      Potti314 thanks, I am glad I could save the time. I wanted to try to keep these as new and scuff free as possible so with the key I won't get any of those TOK marks.
      American Locks are a lot of fun to pick but I am happy I got to take this little shortcut.
      Thanks for checking it out :)

      Lock Noob it was actually funny when I went to the locksmith I walked in and it was a pretty green guy and I told him I needed an AM3 8-4-1-3-5 cut and it took them a couple minutes to figure out what I wanted

    Hey, I just went through your entire lock picking basics series and I honestly learned so much. I've ordered my first set and purchasing a few cheap master locks. Is it wise to purchase a large pack that come in those 12 packs with the matching key for all of them? Or should I purchase a bunch separately for different key bitting?

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would rather them be keyed differently so you could get used to some different bitting. What would be really cheap is if you bought a Kwikset and a repining kit and changed the pins around yourself. Congrats on the success!

      HelpfulLockPicker That's a great idea. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Very interesting. When you measured the pins and stated the cut number how do you know the number. Is higher number longer pin?

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peter Platten there is a key bitting chart where each length corresponds to a keypin. The longer the keypin the larger the number.
      You should figure out the code to your house lock so if you ever get locked out you can get a key made on the spot. You can also do the same by measuring the key depths.

    Great video again, what pick tool brand do you use? I just started and got the sparrows night school kit and a southord MPXS-32 and some crap one from china for $14.

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use mostly Peterson picks. My most used pick is the Peterson Hook 1 Reach (it is the hook 1 just longer) in 0.025" and the Peterson Gem in 0.018" which was used in this video. These two picks will get you far.
      For top of the keyway I would get the flat bar set and heavy bar set from Sparrow, it is cheaper and you get the 0.040" and 0.050" thickness which are the most common used.

    • @BMWguns
      @BMWguns 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      cool, I got both top of the key way wrench sets from Sparrows, I will check out the Peterson's pick, I found the Gem slim Euro, do have a part number for the Hook 1 Reach? Thank you

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just do not buy the one with the rubber handle, it is not worth the cost and takes away from feedback.
      Their $3 "spring steel" picks are not bad either if you want to save a little bit. With them, you are going to pay like $8 for shipping so try to make it worth it, lol.

    • @BMWguns
      @BMWguns 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I was planing on getting the plastic handles, I was checking them out on lockpicks.com 1 dollar cheaper shipping. What is the difference between the GOVT steel and the regular on?

    I'm a beginner and confused why you actually wanted these to be keyed alike. I search eBay for locks to buy so I can practice picking. If you have 10 locks all keyed alike, where is the fun in learning to pick them since you now effectively have 1 lock instead of 10.

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would have to watch the video again but I think they came that way? I just go with what is cheapest and rekey as needed
