      @@zazuch there are legitimately people who don't understand that locks can be picked with $10 tools by even children in 3 seconds. They see lockpicking as something career spies and career criminals spend years learning and only use against high value targets they can't break into. Destructive opening is also more obvious to bystanders as you have to carry larger tools, and even the smallest lock has that challenge. But as the guy above you stated, with this kind of shitty lock design to bystanders and even the police it just looks like you're using a regular old key.

      here's my guide for locks picked by LPL:
      0-3 seconds: absolute trash, probably zipped it or used some other dumb attack
      4-10 seconds: adequate for locking a cookie jar or something equally low value
      11-30 seconds: a decent lock, you can lock your bike with it
      31-60 seconds: a good lock to use on something high value, like a box of jewellery
      61 seconds- 2 minutes: a bloody good lock to use on something extremely high value (like your front door)
      2 minutes+: these locks are more of a 'game' than an actual lock and were designed for people like LPL to pick them, rather than actually secure something.
      Note that video length is not a good indication. LPL might spend 2 seconds picking the lock and then 2 minutes bashing the company that made it, or 10 seconds saying hi, 1:40 picking and 10 saying bye.
      to my knowledge, there's no lock that LPL couldn't pick

A shitty padlock functions as a sign that say "please don't touch this", so most people won't touch it, even if said padlock could be picked by vigorously shaking a hairpin inside it. And a padlock that costs 50 cents to produce and sells for 5 bucks is much more profitable than a padlock that sells for 5 bucks and costs 4.50 to produce.

    I think why the LockPickingLawyer's channel is so great is it bucks the trend of other TH-cam videos of adding fluff to hit the 10 minute mark. It's insanely frustrating to see videos that are 10:02, 11:34, 12:06, when they could have easily been 2-3 minutes long. And I get it, ad revenue is a thing and those channels want to make money. But, I now actively avoid those channels/videos because I know for 7-8 minutes, I'll be waiting for them to get to the actual content. That's not the case of the LockPickingLawyer, and I wish more channels took note. Thanks LockPickingLawyer!

    • @randoprior4130
      @randoprior4130 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a difference between talking in circles to hit the 10 minute sweet spot, and uploading 10 minute long videos. Don't avoid clicking on a video just because it's 10 minutes long. Click on it, and if the creator is rambling or buying time, then pass your judgments. But TH-cam has a speed up option, as well as a skip 10,20,30,40, etc by tapping on the screen or using arrow keys. Really no excuse to avoid those videos entirely, just speed through the parts you don't need to hear.

    • @hackmonkeydotnet
      @hackmonkeydotnet 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@randoprior4130 Oh, I agree. There's quality content that's longer than 10 minutes and I happily watch it. But, it's a shame to see channels that use to pump out quality content in 5-7 minutes suddenly shifting to 10-12 minutes. I don't have time to scrub through the video and get past the 30% fluff ("LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE! AND BE SURE TO HIT THAT BELL!") only to realize the video should have been 3 minutes top. I'm just one person, so my non-view won't mean much, but I like to think that I'm sending a message some how to TH-cam to move away from mandating 10+ minute videos as "quality content".

      He sort of had that. He picked open one of Public Storage's locks. Public Storage contacted him saying that is an old version and that they don't use that design anymore for that reason. They also sent him the new version which he said was a much more secure lock, then promptly picked it open.

      The short answer would be no. Best you can hope for are very very difficult to pick. So long as it takes significant time to pick a lock, no one would risk getting caught doing it.

    • @johannes8522
      @johannes8522 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      No, but the more time and skill it takes to open a lock, the less likely a successful attempt will be.

      That's theoretically impossible, however many locks are so hard to pick (or whatever method is employed) that it becomes impractical to try. For most applications it's not needed anyway as slowing the attacker down is already enough.

    Sometimes I forget there's a dusty little pouch in my kit with comb picks in it. I used to see how many locks they would actually open. If you could get the things IN th keyway at all... that was a success in itself. However; IF they fit, and IF that lock is able to be over-lifted, BANG you're in just like a key.
