    I own 3 Buck 110 knives, the oldest I've had for over 40 years. I've never had the blade snap down on me.

      The first one I bought...also about 40 years ago...did bite me. And that was the last one to do so. Kudos on you avoiding it!

    • @thermalreboot
      @thermalreboot 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnnyl321 Really? The closest I got was with my daily carry 55, I opened it to cut open a box and the lock didn't snap in properly, turned out some pocket lint got into the notch. I cleared it and it's been fine since. I love my Buck knives, but they don't profile the edge like on my oldest one, the edge is rounded as opposed to a strict V. I never sharpen it, once in a while I'll take a find stone to strop it and it stays razor sharp.

Pretty new to it, about two years but I never thought about hand engraving befor, but it makes sense. I love the old ways myself! And live that knife too. I had one just like it when I was growing up, but seen as I'm from Ireland I'm sure it was some crappy imitation.. U earned my subscription today. Thank you, I have people speak of patience but the only time I'm impatient is when I'm doing something I don't want to do, in the case of this knife and other projects like it, I'm doing something I want to do so I don't specifically want to be done..............but I can't say that about everything I do, trust me, I get impatient.

    I like the no music decision. The project turned out pretty.
    I like how you show your process and include video of your body position and movements whereas so many engraving channels are hyperfocused in close-up.
    Why not cut a slot in the curved (front) side of your pine clamping block to house the back of the closed blade?

    • @thehomesteadcraftsman8975
      @thehomesteadcraftsman8975  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You could do the slot thing, but it's nice to have the blade open. It helps you see the lines of the knife. which makes a difference of the angle you place the medallion. It's not in line with the blade or the handle, it's kind of in between. The reason all the other engraving videos are so close is most are engraving with pneumatic engravers and microscopes. The cameras are filming through the microscope and the engraver is sitting down not doing much in the way of movement. The vice is set on a turn table, the engraver does a combo of turning the vice and controlling the cut with the other hand. There's nothing wrong with it, just no where near as romantic as engraving with a hammer and chisel. It also has a much easier learning curve vs. Hammer and chisel. But what people are able to achieve is amazing. The extreme magnification combined with the advanced sharpening system makes for the ability to do some VERY detailed work. All possible with hammer and chisel but harder and time consuming.

    I much prefer the sound of the tools vs music and just like you said "if you prefer music then turn some on". I've got one of these old buck 110 that's been converted to a switch blade, you can push the button (oval piece of brass used as a lever lock) and it will open or you can open it like you would any other buck 110, I've always thought about having it engraved, or at the very least have my last name engraved on the button to take away from the randomness of the blank piece of brass on the wood scales, then I can pass it down to my son or grandson

      The black is flat black spray paint. There are other things that work as well, but the paint works well and holds up. Flat is good so it does not reflect. It's thin so it gets into detail.
