- In this video I am showing how I made a simple hand engraved hammer without a forge or fancy tools. For the Hammerhead I have used a 25mm by 25mm steel bar (1” x 1”) and cherry wood for the handle, cherry is not ideal for hammer handles but it is beautiful and this hammer will get very light abuse, ideally hickory or ash wood is used.

How to make an engraved hammer:
Be a master engraver.
Proceed to engrave a hammer.
Done and done.

Good tips Theophilus. Also, it looked like the wood used was pine which is fine for a show piece but consider using hickory next time. An alternative to boiled linseed oil (on the shaft of the handle at least... stick to linseed for split top) would be pure tung oil. While it is slightly more expensive, requires (much) longer to dry, and sanding between coats, it does have a higher sheen, is better at water proofing, and no or only slight yellowing when compared to linseed.
I am curious on the soaking of the wedge however? Most wedges I've seen have been metal and while I guess there is a case to be made for penetrating the split with the oil from the wedge, would you only do this for wooden wedges (as a treatment for the wedge) or would you also do this for metal wedges? Is there not a higher risk of flammability with the chemical reaction from the drying by doing this? Would it even cure properly with such a tight seal?
NickGreyden whether hickory, pine or oak it is important to heat dry and then hot insert the handle whether you use boiled linseed oil (my all purpose preservative for maintaining wood), steam swelling or another oil preservative is all a matter of choice. But it will take the shrinking then swelling with some liquid that will swell the wood to achieve the desired result.

Even if you hadn't won my respect with your tool making and artistic skills, you would absolutely have earned my respect just for hand-engraving that hammer without use of power tools. I just finished engraving a sword I'm making, but I used a Dremel with diamond bits, and it took me hours to hand etch it. I can only imagine how much time and effort you spent doing it with a hammer and chisel.
I'm truly impressed by your skill and efforts in this video.

Shocking skill I have to say! Here’s an interesting little trick I heard on transferring a design from paper to steel. If you make a design on your computer, mirror it, and print it out onto paper, you can lay the inked side down on the steel, and spray acetone on the back of the paper the design on the paper will neatly transfer the design from the paper to the serface of the steel. I’m sure I could’ve explained that better. Regardless, excellent work!
CarbideSyndicate great tip! I will definitely try it out, however I do prefer drawing the design by hand but maybe I'll trace it out on the computer.
@1234 yes, that's true. by tracing I meant scanning the drawing and then trace out the lines just to make them more refined and visible in the transferring process.

You can also use polyacrylic in the same way as the acetone but it is a lot less toxic. I found out about this a couple of days ago by watching this video: th-cam.com/video/xHOWUR8vTvo/w-d-xo.html He is showing the method on wood, but it will work on metal as well. You have some awesome engraving skills Uri. Beautiful hammer.
If you’re going to try that, it needs to be printed with a laserjet printer.
It’s the carbon from the toner that transfers, not the ink from an inkjet printer.

He takes the 'engineering' approach to his projects. I made some very simple shelving he did a video about. Simple and REALLY strong. He did a "marble machine" series that was really something else. Heirloom stuff I'd say. There's a bunch of "top shelf" (IMHO) artisans out there. All well worthy of looking into. What amazes me most I think is how generous they are with the knowledge they've gained, most likely by graduating the School of Hard Knocks.
He's at 47k as of now. He better hurry up if he's to reach 100k by the new year.

@@kamalmx2269 I can't tell if you're trolling or serious. Assuming you're serious, I would guess that's exactly why they do it. For the work. If you've never made anything with your own hands, I would highly recommend it. Regardless of what it is. You'll gain a sense of pride (a good kind). You'll gain a better appreciation of the value of making things like this. You'll learn more about yourself. Even if what you make is intangible, you'll get the feeling of having accomplished and created something. Maybe you already do. Do you code any? Art? Music? Looking at your channel, it seems like you enjoy working out. That's similar. You have to work hard to get good results, right? :)
Just because there may be an easier way to do something, it doesn't necessarily mean that you should do it the easy way. Kinda like why the phrase "taking the easy way out" is negative. :)
Plus, if you have kids or ever do or even nieces or nephews, you can teach them how to do the same. It's a very good lesson to learn. One that doesn't seem to be taught very much anymore unfortunately. Also, learning it younger can make a greater impact on the child. They'll grow up knowing they can accomplish something themselves. Learning the value of things.
I don't mean that you should seek out the hardest way possible though, unless you want a challenge.
There are probably more reasons and better reasons but my brain has decided to stop working.

That's simply amazing engraving skills right there! It's so nice to see this level of detailed metalwork done with nothing but hand tools.
One thought though. As a blacksmith, I just can't imagine making a hammer without hardening the steel.. Though I guess there's a difference depending on what you use it for.
i think, as long as this hammer isnt purely decorative it should definetly be hardened. as soon as he strikes a nail, the hammer would be dented

When drilling such large holes or any holes use a thin oil for cooling and lubrication. I will often use oil on saw blades as well stopping to add oil every 10-15 seconds or so for both applications.
A sharp tool doesn't want friction to cut and oil keeps your tools sharp and hard to cut.
Your chisels and files don't move fast enough to get the benefits but saws and drills do. Although chalk is used to lubricate files under heavy use.
hand engraving takes a lot of time and patience and muscle power while filming it...super great!

Obviously the hammer head is amazing. But I also love the simplicity of the handle. It is a unique handle that completes the hammer without taking away from the head. Beautiful job!

@@anonymousbosch9265 Something fairly easy that you can do to make knives look more decorative is file work. It works well on back springs on lock knives and on the tang of sheath knives/fixed blades.
Search for Laguoile knives to see some beautiful file work.

well done buddy looked awesome . have you ever thought about gun bluing . there is a home made cold process thats safe . with hydrogen peroxide and vinegar . basically you let it rust then boil it in hot water to stop the rusting . after wards it leaves a nice blueish look to the metal . you might have to do this a few times to get the color you want . but there is also chemical cold bluing you can use as well . might work better then paint buddy . any way good luck god bless

how the heck do you make such straight lines? even with a pattern.... engraving is damn hard.
Practice. Also, the straightness of a line is a lie, and smaller gaps are more forgiving than longer ones. I have done a lot of work that looks nice, until you looks at exact angles. As they say, an artist sees all their own flaws. Can't be too critical if yourself.

The wood tools are just basic files, chisels, handsaws, and a planer. The engraving tools are equally basic.
There's no secrets here at all, just very very basic tools that it would take less than a minute to learn about by doing a google search or by watching a tutorial video.
It would be way more beneficial to actually watch or read a tutorial on it. You aren't going to learn anything by just knowing what tools he used, and if he were to explain each one's use he'd basically be writing an entire tutorial - which would take a lot of time to do.
It would be a major waste of his time, and not to mention this video is two months old.
If you're serious about woodworking or engraving, or even not serious about it and just want to dabble, go watch some videos explaining the basics. There's hundreds out there. Good luck.

2. You're basically asking him to write a tutorial on basic woodworking and engraving tools when you could just look up tutorial videos, which would be infinitely more helpful
3. Again, him telling you what tools he uses (they are very basic tools) are not going to be helpful to you unless he explains what each tool is used for and how to use it - so a waste of his time and yours
And really, it's not his job to answer questions at all - especially on old videos asking for info that can be found by doing basic research and learning for yourself.
Don't act so entitled, go read a book or watch a video explaining what tools you need to use - and then if you want to know what specific models or brands he uses, then you can ask him.
